Subnautica: Below Zero is the closest game to Subnautica 2 because it keeps the series’ first-person alien-ocean exploration, habitat construction, crafting and survival loop. Play the original Subnautica if you have not experienced the series yet, choose Raft for cooperative ocean survival, No Man’s Sky for a far larger exploration sandbox with underwater bases, and The Planet Crafter for calmer crafting and terraforming on land.

Subnautica 2 is described by Unknown Worlds Entertainment as “an underwater survival adventure set on an all-new alien world.” It offers solo play and co-op for up to four players, so the best alternative depends on whether you want the same underwater structure, a shared survival journey, a galaxy-scale sandbox or a gentler progression system.

At a glance: which Subnautica 2 alternative fits you?

Game Best for Environment Building focus Exploration shape Co-op information
Subnautica: Below Zero The closest direct match Frozen alien ocean, with areas above and below the surface Underwater habitats and crafted equipment Biome progression and connected series lore Not stated in the cited material
Subnautica The foundational experience Alien ocean with reefs, volcanoes and deep caves Habitats, equipment and submarines Guided discovery through increasingly dangerous areas Not stated in the cited material
Raft Co-op ocean survival Open water, islands and underwater resource sites Modular floating-raft expansion Travel between islands while collecting drifting resources Described as a multiplayer survival game; player limit is not stated here
No Man’s Sky Large-scale exploration and bases A galaxy of environments, including underwater regions Planetary and underwater bases Highly open exploration with optional story objectives Multiplayer is supported; a player limit is not stated here
The Planet Crafter Calm crafting and terraforming Land-based hostile world Crafting and terraforming infrastructure Progression through environmental transformation Not stated in the cited material

If “like Subnautica 2” means first-person underwater survival with a mystery to uncover, start with Below Zero. If it means “survive and build with friends on the ocean,” start with Raft. If it means “explore an enormous universe and build anywhere,” choose No Man’s Sky.

There is no single replacement for every part of the formula. The two Subnautica games concentrate on one alien ocean, Raft turns the ocean into a route between islands, No Man’s Sky makes underwater discovery one part of a galaxy, and The Planet Crafter moves the entire loop onto land. Use the environment and progression columns as a quick filter before you decide.

What Subnautica 2 promises

Subnautica 2 is set on a new alien world rather than Planet 4546B, the setting associated with the previous games. The official description identifies underwater survival, exploration, custom base building, crafting tools and hidden mysteries as its core activities. Steam lists it as an Early Access survival game with underwater exploration, horror, open-world, base-building and co-op tags.

The confirmed group-play figure is up to four players. That matters when selecting an alternative: some readers are looking for the series’ solitary atmosphere, while others mainly want a shared expedition. Because Subnautica 2 is in Early Access, features, balance and available content can change; compare alternatives by their established design identity rather than assuming they duplicate every planned feature.

Unknown Worlds’ official site also says the Subnautica series has sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. The page does not provide a publication year for that figure, so it is best treated as an undated series milestone rather than a current sales count. It nevertheless explains why the underwater-survival format has become a reference point for players looking for exploration, crafting and base building together.

The setting change is important. Subnautica 2 is not advertised as another visit to the original game’s map; official support material specifically says it is on an all-new alien world, not Planet 4546B. Players should therefore expect a new place to learn rather than a simple remaster or map expansion.

1. Subnautica: Below Zero — the closest direct match

Below Zero is the safest recommendation for anyone who wants the same overall structure as Subnautica 2. The official series description places it on Planet 4546B in a freezing underwater adventure. Its documented loop combines survival in icy biomes above and below the surface, habitat construction, tool crafting and progressively deeper dives.

Why it feels most like Subnautica 2

  • It is a first-person alien-world survival game centered on underwater travel.
  • Habitat building is part of progression rather than a separate creative mode.
  • Crafted tools expand where and how you can explore.
  • The setting connects directly to the earlier game’s lore and world.
  • Its blend of submerged and surface areas previews the kind of environmental contrast that can make an alien world feel larger than one biome.

The freezing setting changes the tone without abandoning the series’ identity. You move between submerged spaces and icy surface areas, so it is not simply a repeat of the original ocean. That mix makes it useful for players who want recognizable systems with a different environmental emphasis. It also gives returning players a familiar vocabulary—habitats, tools, deeper routes—without requiring Subnautica 2 to revisit the same location.

Who should choose it

Choose Below Zero when your priority order is underwater exploration first, survival and crafting second, and story-linked discovery third. It is also the logical next game after the original Subnautica because the controls, vocabulary and habitat-building concepts remain familiar.

It is not the right choice if your main requirement is a confirmed four-player campaign. The official descriptions used here do not state a co-op player limit for Below Zero, so do not infer multiplayer parity from Subnautica 2’s four-player announcement. Verify the current store listing and platform support if co-op is essential.

2. Subnautica — the foundational experience

The original Subnautica remains the reference point for this entire category. Its official description centers on an alien underwater adventure where you craft equipment, pilot submarines and explore coral reefs, volcanoes and deep cave systems while trying to survive.

What makes the original essential

The game presents the ocean as a connected sequence of spaces rather than a collection of unrelated levels. Surface reefs, volcanic areas and deep caves each create different exploration decisions, while crafted equipment and submarines let you reach places that were previously inaccessible. The result is a clear relationship between gathering, construction and discovery: exploring reveals materials and information, and new equipment turns that information into access to deeper areas.

This structure is why the original is often a better preparation for Subnautica 2 than a generic survival game. It teaches the series’ rhythm of scouting, returning to a safe habitat, improving equipment and making another descent. The world itself supplies the sense of progression, so a new player can understand the appeal without relying on a separate competitive or combat loop.

Why play it before Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2 uses a new alien world, so it is not a direct continuation of the same location. Playing the original first gives you the strongest baseline for understanding the series’ approach to atmosphere, environmental storytelling, vehicles and habitat construction. It also lets you decide whether the deliberate solo-survival rhythm suits you before moving to a newer game built around optional four-player co-op.

Select the original if you want the most concentrated version of the formula: ocean biomes, equipment crafting, submarine piloting and deep-cave exploration. It is a better fit than a broader sandbox when you want a directed mystery rather than an almost unlimited map. New players should also expect the game to ask them to learn the environment gradually; the attraction is discovery and preparation, not a checklist of instantly visible objectives.

3. Raft — best for co-op ocean survival

Raft shifts the fantasy from living beneath an alien sea to surviving on top of an open ocean. GamesRadar describes its central loop as expanding a floating raft, collecting resources that drift past, reaching islands and sometimes diving underwater for valuable supplies.

How its structure differs

Your raft is the persistent home and the main construction project. Instead of establishing a fixed underwater habitat network, you continually improve a mobile platform and use it to reach new locations. Islands interrupt the open-water journey and provide destinations, while underwater dives add risk and resource collection without turning the whole world into a submerged biome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction affects how you plan. In Subnautica, the question is often how far to descend from a habitat. In Raft, it is how to keep the floating base useful while traveling toward the next island. Resources drifting by, raft expansion and destination choices form a travel loop rather than a descent through connected alien biomes.

Why it works for groups

Raft is the strongest choice here when the social activity matters as much as the setting. Resource collection, raft expansion and island travel naturally create jobs for a group, even though the available material does not specify a maximum party size. The cooperative emphasis changes the emotional texture: planning and building together replace some of the isolation that defines a solo underwater expedition.

Choose Raft if…

  • You want an ocean setting but prefer a floating home to an underwater base.
  • You want a survival journey designed around shared construction.
  • You enjoy moving between destinations instead of following a concentrated alien-ocean mystery.
  • Underwater diving is welcome, but it does not need to dominate every minute.
  • You want the journey and the base to be the same project, rather than building a permanent habitat network.

Do not choose Raft expecting a full substitute for Subnautica’s seabed exploration. Its defining space is the surface, with islands and the raft providing the structure. Check the current platform listing before buying if your group needs a particular console or PC version, since the information here does not establish platform availability or a party-size ceiling.

4. No Man’s Sky — best for broad exploration and bases

No Man’s Sky is the outlier in scale. GamesRadar characterizes it as much broader and less structured than Subnautica: you can explore an entire galaxy, follow optional story objectives, build bases, play multiplayer and construct bases underwater.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where it matches

Base construction and discovery are the strongest points of overlap. Underwater bases let you recreate part of the submerged-building fantasy, while multiplayer supports shared exploration. The large procedural universe also rewards players who want to keep discovering new places after completing a particular objective.

It can therefore satisfy two different Subnautica players: the builder who wants to design a home below the surface and the explorer who wants an effectively unending supply of locations. Those benefits come from breadth, not from reproducing Subnautica’s tightly focused ocean.

Where it diverges

The game spans many environments, so the ocean is one destination among several rather than the central identity. Its optional objectives and open-ended structure provide more freedom but less of the tightly guided progression associated with a concentrated underwater mystery. Survival pressure, resource rules and environmental threats are not detailed in the official descriptions used here, so do not assume they mirror Subnautica’s specific systems.

Choose No Man’s Sky if…

  • You value scale over a single coherent biome.
  • You want both planetary and underwater construction.
  • You prefer optional goals and self-directed travel.
  • You want multiplayer in a broader exploration sandbox.
  • You want to keep building and exploring after a focused story has ended.

It is the best adjacent choice for a player who says, “I want Subnautica’s discovery and bases, but I do not want to stay underwater.” It is a weaker fit if the horror, isolation and deliberate descent of an ocean-only world are the features you value most.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. The Planet Crafter — best for calm crafting and terraforming

The Planet Crafter is not an underwater game. It belongs on this list because it serves a neighboring motivation: gathering resources, crafting equipment and transforming a hostile world at a slower pace.

Its core appeal

Instead of descending through ocean biomes, you develop a land-based environment through terraforming. Progress is expressed through environmental change and the infrastructure that enables it. That makes the game a good substitute for readers who enjoy the constructive side of Subnautica more than its fear of deep water or its emphasis on marine exploration.

Who will enjoy the change of setting

Choose it if you want a calmer pace, visible long-term transformation and a crafting loop without needing a literal ocean. It is a poor match if your must-have feature is first-person diving, underwater habitats or marine mystery. Treat it as an adjacent survival-crafting option, not a direct replacement.

The key expectation to set is one of mood and objective. The Planet Crafter’s appeal is watching a hostile land-based setting change as your infrastructure grows, whereas Subnautica’s strongest payoff comes from reaching a new depth or uncovering another part of an alien sea. Pick the former only when transformation is more important to you than underwater atmosphere.

How the five games compare

Underwater focus

Below Zero and Subnautica are ocean-centered from the ground up. Raft is ocean-surface centered, with underwater dives supporting its resource loop. No Man’s Sky includes underwater regions but covers many other environments. The Planet Crafter is land-based.

This is the most useful first filter. If “underwater” is non-negotiable, limit your shortlist to Subnautica and Below Zero. If “ocean” is enough, Raft adds a strong co-op option. If you only need the ability to build underwater occasionally, No Man’s Sky offers that within a much larger setting. The Planet Crafter should be considered only when the setting can change completely.

Survival pressure

The official descriptions establish Subnautica’s survival framing and Below Zero’s icy hazards, while Raft is described as open-water survival. Comparable details for food, water, oxygen, temperature and other environmental systems in every title are not stated in the official descriptions used here, so those mechanics should not be treated as identical across games.

For that reason, compare the games by the pressure they clearly advertise rather than by assumed feature checklists. Subnautica and Below Zero foreground environmental exposure and deeper exploration; Raft foregrounds maintaining a mobile ocean base; No Man’s Sky foregrounds broad discovery; The Planet Crafter foregrounds gradual transformation.

Building

Building model Game What the available descriptions establish
Fixed underwater habitats Subnautica and Below Zero Habitats support survival, crafting and exploration.
Mobile modular home Raft The raft expands as resources are collected during ocean travel.
Planetary and underwater bases No Man’s Sky Base building spans a broad galaxy and includes underwater locations.
Terraforming infrastructure The Planet Crafter Construction supports gradual environmental transformation.

Think about whether you want a base to be a refuge, a vehicle or a long-term engineering project. Subnautica habitats are tied to surviving and reaching more of the ocean. Raft’s base travels with you. No Man’s Sky lets you place bases across many kinds of worlds. The Planet Crafter uses construction to support the visible change of its planet.

Exploration structure

Subnautica and Below Zero emphasize discovering connected biomes and mysteries. Raft uses a travel loop built around a raft, drifting resources and islands. No Man’s Sky offers the widest self-directed space, with optional story objectives. The Planet Crafter ties progress to changing the environment rather than reaching deeper ocean zones.

Co-op and party requirements

Subnautica 2 explicitly supports solo play and up to four players. Raft is described as multiplayer, and No Man’s Sky supports multiplayer, but the player limits are not established here. The cited descriptions do not state a co-op limit for Subnautica or Below Zero, and The Planet Crafter’s multiplayer details are not established here either. Confirm the current store page, platform compatibility and edition for every group before purchasing.

You want to play with friends

Subnautica 2 officially supports up to four players. Among the alternatives, Raft is the clearest co-op ocean-survival match, while No Man’s Sky is the better multiplayer choice if you also want a galaxy-scale sandbox. The cited material does not provide player limits for those alternatives.

You want the biggest possible map

Choose No Man’s Sky. Its scope extends across an entire galaxy and includes many environments, so it offers more breadth than any ocean-only recommendation here.

You want a low-intensity crafting project

Choose The Planet Crafter. Its appeal is gradual terraforming and a calmer land-based progression, not underwater danger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want a focused mystery rather than a sandbox

Choose Subnautica or Below Zero. Their connected biomes and series storytelling provide a clearer route through the world than No Man’s Sky’s optional objectives or The Planet Crafter’s transformation-focused progression.

What to check before buying or installing

Availability, platform support, edition, region and current price can change. Confirm those details on the store page for your platform before purchasing. No verified price or affiliate offer is established here, so treat any displayed retailer price as something to check at the time you buy rather than as a permanent recommendation.

Subnautica 2’s Early Access status also means its content and features may evolve. Multiplayer support should be checked separately for each alternative rather than inferred from the genre label. A title tagged as survival or open-world does not automatically offer the same co-op systems, underwater access or base-building depth.

Keep the distinction between “underwater” and “ocean survival” in mind. A game can include diving without making the seabed its primary world, as Raft does. Conversely, a game can support underwater bases while still being mostly planetary or space exploration, as No Man’s Sky does. Those differences determine whether the transition from Subnautica 2 feels natural or merely adjacent.

Finally, decide whether you want a solo atmosphere or a social routine before installing. Subnautica’s identity is closely tied to solitary discovery, while Subnautica 2 advertises optional co-op. Raft’s floating home is especially suited to shared tasks, and No Man’s Sky makes multiplayer part of a much wider sandbox. The right choice depends as much on who will play as on the word “underwater” in a store description.
