Patapon 1+2 Replay is the closest game to Ratatan. Both turn short rhythmic commands into battlefield decisions: you keep a beat, direct a group of units, collect resources, and improve the force for the next encounter. It is available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, and launched on 11 July 2025.

Choose Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda if you want rhythm combat wrapped in exploration, Crypt of the NecroDancer if precise beat execution and roguelike difficulty matter most, or Rift of the NecroDancer if you prefer newer lane-based rhythm challenges over commanding a squad.

What makes Ratatan different from an ordinary rhythm game?

Ratatan sits at the intersection of three genres. Its official Steam description calls it “a rhythm roguelike action game that combines rhythm games and side-scrolling action, with online co-op gameplay supporting up to 4 players.” That combination matters: the beat is not decoration or a score multiplier. It is the timing system for movement, attacks, defensive actions, and the decisions you make about a small army.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ratatan is also presented as a spiritual successor to Patapon. A run therefore asks two questions at once: can you execute the next command on time, and is that command appropriate for the situation? A strong player can still lose by choosing an unsuitable formation, attacking into a bad matchup, or spending a resource at the wrong moment. Conversely, a sensible tactical plan can fail if the rhythm slips.

When looking for games like Ratatan, compare four things rather than relying on the word “rhythm” alone:

  • Command style: drum sequences, movement on every beat, or timed inputs in lanes.
  • Strategic layer: unit composition and equipment, individual positioning, or mostly personal execution.
  • Run structure: a persistent campaign, repeatable roguelike runs, or discrete stages.
  • Multiplayer: online co-op, local co-op, or a solo design.

The recommendations below are ordered by how much of Ratatan’s particular mix they preserve, not by review score or sales.

Quick comparison: games like Ratatan at a glance

Game Command style Strategic emphasis Structure Platform and multiplayer information
Ratatan Rhythmic commands combined with side-scrolling action Directing a party during combat Roguelike runs Steam listing; online co-op for up to four players
Patapon 1+2 Replay Four drum rhythms issue commands Classes, materials, squad improvement, and battlefield choices Campaign progression PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam; one-player offline, plus local co-op on Nintendo Switch
Cadence of Hyrule Move and fight in time with the music Exploration, combat positioning, and adventure objectives Adventure with roguelike elements Nintendo release; the official description does not identify a co-op mode
Crypt of the NecroDancer Move and attack on every beat Route planning, enemy patterns, and personal execution Roguelike runs Platform availability and multiplayer details vary by edition; confirm the store listing for your system
Rift of the NecroDancer Timed inputs in lane-based rhythm encounters Accuracy, reaction speed, and pattern recognition Stage-based progression Multiplayer and platform details are not stated in the official information summarized here

The table shows why no single alternative is a perfect substitute. Patapon preserves Ratatan’s command-and-squad relationship, while the NecroDancer games preserve the pressure of acting on the beat. Cadence of Hyrule is the middle ground for players who want rhythm combat but also expect a conventional adventure world.

1. Patapon 1+2 Replay: the closest match to Ratatan

Pick Patapon 1+2 Replay first if what you want is the feeling of conducting a force rather than controlling one hero. Bandai Namco describes the Patapon as “a delicate and mysterious species of creatures like an eyeball” guided by the rhythm of four drums. The drum pattern is the interface between you and the army: you learn the commands, perform them consistently, and watch the units carry them out.

Why the command systems line up

Ratatan and Patapon both make rhythm an instruction language. Instead of selecting an attack from a conventional menu and waiting for an animation, you communicate through a sequence. The sequence has to be recognized, remembered, and delivered with a steady cadence. That makes every encounter partly a music task and partly a tactical one.

Patapon 1+2 Replay keeps the four-drum structure that defined the original games. Each rhythm corresponds to a battlefield instruction, so the useful skill is not merely tapping quickly. You must know which command advances the group, which one attacks, and which one protects or changes the party’s behavior, then switch at the right time.

Where Patapon adds more management

Between commands, you shape the force itself. Different classes have different combat roles, and materials gathered during play can be used to build stronger squads. That creates a preparation layer that Ratatan players will recognize: a run or mission is easier when the army is assembled for the threats ahead rather than treated as a fixed collection of interchangeable units.

The two games still differ in pacing. Patapon 1+2 Replay is built around campaign progression, so your decisions accumulate over a longer sequence of missions. Ratatan’s identity is tied to roguelike runs, where a failed attempt sends you back into a new run structure and asks you to adapt again. Choose Patapon when you want persistent development and a clear sequence of objectives; choose Ratatan when restarting and improvising are part of the appeal.

Release, solo play, and local multiplayer

Patapon 1+2 Replay launched worldwide on 11 July 2025 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Its official page lists one-player offline play. The Nintendo Switch version also lists local co-op, which makes it the most practical choice here for playing beside someone on the same system. That is a different proposition from Ratatan’s online co-op for up to four players.

Who should choose it?

  • Choose it if drum-command strategy is the feature you want to preserve above all else.
  • Choose it if class roles, materials, and building a stronger squad sound more appealing than controlling a single character.
  • Choose it if you prefer a campaign that remembers your progress rather than a sequence of independent runs.
  • Choose the Switch edition when local co-op is a deciding requirement.

Patapon 1+2 Replay is not simply a historical curiosity. It is the direct answer to the “games like Patapon” and “games like Ratatan” searches because it explains the design lineage in playable form.

2. Cadence of Hyrule: rhythm combat with a real adventure to explore

Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda is the strongest alternative for players who want rhythm rules but do not want every decision framed as squad management. Nintendo describes it as a rhythmic action-adventure that applies Crypt of the NecroDancer’s gameplay to The Legend of Zelda setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How its rhythm works

You move, attack, and respond to enemies in time with the soundtrack. The beat provides a shared clock: your character, opponents, and many environmental interactions are synchronized to it. Missing the timing is not just a lower score; it can leave you out of position when an enemy’s turn arrives.

That produces a similar concentration to Ratatan. You listen, anticipate the next beat, and make a decision before the window closes. The difference is what the decision controls. Ratatan asks how a group should act. Cadence of Hyrule asks where your character should stand, which enemy to engage, and how to move through the next section of the map.

Why Zelda fans may prefer it

The adventure framework gives you recognizable exploration goals, a broad overworld, and the expectation that discovery is part of progress. If the appeal of Ratatan’s side-scrolling missions is the sensation of advancing through a larger world, Cadence of Hyrule offers that sensation in a more traditional action-adventure form.

It is also a useful fit for players who enjoy rhythm systems but are uneasy about managing several unit types. You can concentrate on movement, enemy patterns, equipment choices, and route planning without maintaining a full roster of troops.

Trade-offs for Ratatan players

  • Less army direction: the strategic subject is your controlled character and route, not a group receiving drum-style commands.
  • Different progression rhythm: exploration and adventure objectives replace Ratatan’s emphasis on a dedicated squad loop.
  • Setting matters: the Zelda presentation is central, so players seeking an abstract or creature-led army fantasy may find it less direct.

Choose Cadence of Hyrule when “rhythm plus exploration” describes your ideal game more accurately than “rhythm plus unit composition.”

3. Crypt of the NecroDancer: the purest test of beat execution

Crypt of the NecroDancer is the recommendation for players who want the strictest relationship between timing and survival. Its defining rule is simple to describe and demanding to master: move and attack on the beat. Every step is part of the music, and every enemy pattern must be read through that same timing grid.

What it shares with Ratatan

Both games make rhythm functional. You cannot treat the soundtrack as background while playing normally; the beat is the information that tells you when an action is valid. Both also use roguelike pressure, so a failed attempt is part of learning routes, enemy behavior, and better decisions for the next run.

Players who enjoy Ratatan’s moment-to-moment urgency will recognize the mental loop: hear the pulse, identify the threat, choose an action, and commit before the next beat. As your confidence improves, you stop reacting to individual notes and begin planning several beats ahead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it does not replicate

Crypt of the NecroDancer offers less squad-management strategy. You are primarily improving your own movement, reading rooms, selecting useful items, and exploiting enemy patterns. There is no equivalent emphasis on assembling several combat classes and issuing a coordinated group command.

That makes it a better fit for a player who describes Ratatan as “a rhythm roguelike” rather than “a strategy game with drums.” If your favorite moments are perfectly timed dodges and attacks, Crypt is likely to be more satisfying than a deeper roster system. If your favorite moments are choosing which units should perform the next action, Patapon 1+2 Replay is closer.

Learning curve and accessibility

The game’s clarity is also its challenge. Because actions are tied to the pulse, hesitation is expensive. New players often need time to internalize that waiting for the next beat is an active decision, not lost time. Practice should focus on a consistent tempo and safe positioning rather than trying to move as fast as possible.

Before buying, check the current store listing for your platform and edition. Platform availability and multiplayer features are not uniform enough to assume from the name alone.

4. Rift of the NecroDancer: a lane-based rhythm alternative

Rift of the NecroDancer is aimed at players who want a newer rhythm format built around timed inputs in lanes. It is less directly comparable to Ratatan because it does not center on commanding a party through side-scrolling battles. Its core question is whether you can recognize a pattern and place the correct input in the correct lane at the correct moment.

Why it belongs on a Ratatan shortlist

Rift preserves the qualities many rhythm-strategy fans actually seek: a strict timing window, patterns that become more complex as stages progress, and a strong connection between accuracy and success. It is a good recommendation when the beat itself is the priority and the strategy layer can be lighter.

The lane format changes the skill profile. Ratatan asks you to combine rhythm with battlefield awareness; Rift asks you to read incoming patterns, maintain timing, and switch attention rapidly between lanes. Your decisions are more immediate and input-focused, while Ratatan gives more room for choices about group behavior and composition.

Who will enjoy the difference?

  • Players who prefer discrete stages to long campaign missions.
  • Players who enjoy visual pattern recognition and fast, repeatable attempts.
  • Players who want rhythm practice without learning a large set of army commands.

Do not buy Rift expecting a Patapon replacement. Buy it when you want the timing discipline of Ratatan in a more lane-based, stage-oriented form.

If you want Ratatan’s timing but not army management

Choose Crypt of the NecroDancer. It transfers the pressure of acting on every beat into a focused roguelike where your movement and attacks are the main strategic tools.

If you want a recognizable world and exploration

Choose Cadence of Hyrule. Its Zelda adventure setting gives the rhythm system a map, objectives, and exploration loop instead of making unit composition the center of play.

If you want a newer lane-based rhythm format

Choose Rift of the NecroDancer. It is the least similar in strategic structure, but the most appropriate when timed inputs and pattern reading are your main requirements.

If multiplayer determines the purchase

Ratatan’s official Steam listing supports online co-op for up to four players. Patapon 1+2 Replay lists one-player offline play, with local co-op on Nintendo Switch. The official descriptions summarized for Cadence of Hyrule and Rift of the NecroDancer do not establish equivalent co-op features, and Crypt of the NecroDancer’s options can vary by edition. Verify the exact store page for your platform before buying for a group.

How to evaluate a rhythm-strategy game before you buy

Genre labels are inconsistent, so use the following checklist when a store page claims to be a rhythm strategy game.

  1. Identify what the beat controls. Is it a command language, a movement grid, or a lane-input timer? This predicts the feel more accurately than the word “rhythm.”
  2. Check the strategic subject. Are you choosing unit classes and equipment, planning a route, or only improving personal execution? Ratatan fans often want at least two of these layers at once.
  3. Confirm the reset model. A campaign gives permanent mission-to-mission progress; a roguelike asks you to learn from failed runs; stage progression emphasizes repeatable challenges. Pick the model you are willing to replay.
  4. Read the multiplayer line carefully. “Co-op” can mean online play, same-screen play, or a feature limited to one platform. Ratatan’s four-player online support and Patapon’s Switch local co-op are not interchangeable.
  5. Check input accessibility. A game that requires acting on every beat can be demanding if audio cues are difficult to hear or if visual timing indicators are unclear. Look for adjustable audio, remappable controls, and practice options in the edition you plan to use.
  6. Match the failure loop to your temperament. Roguelikes reward experimentation and repeated attempts. Campaign games reward long-term planning. Lane-based stages reward focused practice and pattern memorization.

A practical starting order for new players

If you have not played any of these games, the order below minimizes the number of unfamiliar systems you learn at once.

  1. Try Patapon 1+2 Replay first if you want the direct command lineage. Learn to recognize the four drum rhythms, then experiment with classes and materials instead of trying to optimize immediately.
  2. Move to Cadence of Hyrule if you want exploration and a character-focused adventure. Concentrate on staying on the pulse while learning enemy spacing.
  3. Play Crypt of the NecroDancer when you are ready for stricter beat-to-beat execution and roguelike pressure. Treat each attempt as pattern study, not just a pass-or-fail run.
  4. Use Rift of the NecroDancer for targeted rhythm practice and lane-based challenges. It is a good change of pace when you want fast stages rather than squad planning.

Ratatan itself remains the best choice when online group play is essential or when you specifically want a rhythm roguelike with side-scrolling action. The alternatives divide those qualities among different systems, so selecting by your preferred axis is more reliable than searching for a one-to-one clone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: the short recommendation

Buy Patapon 1+2 Replay for the closest rhythm-command strategy experience. Choose Cadence of Hyrule for exploration, Crypt of the NecroDancer for uncompromising beat execution, and Rift of the NecroDancer for lane-based rhythm stages. Ratatan is still the multiplayer outlier, with online co-op for up to four players.
