There is no single best PUBG alternative. Choose Call of Duty: Warzone if you want a familiar, firearm-first squad shooter with several battle-royale rule sets; choose Apex Legends if character abilities and coordinated team roles matter most; choose NARAKA: BLADEPOINT if you want a genuine break from gun-dominated combat through melee duels, parkour, grappling and hero skills. All three are described by their official pages as free to play, but platform access, storage requirements, seasonal content and regional availability can change.
The quickest way to choose
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is built around firearm handling, looting, positioning, squad communication and the pressure of a shrinking play area. The alternatives below preserve different parts of that loop rather than copying it exactly. The table shows the meaningful change you will feel after switching.

What to compare before leaving PUBG
Combat emphasis
Ask whether you want to preserve PUBG’s firearm-first identity or replace it. Warzone remains closest on the weapon-and-loot axis. Apex still uses guns, but movement and abilities change how every engagement starts and ends. NARAKA makes close-range spacing, parries, counters and attack timing the main skill test, with ranged weapons supporting rather than defining the fight.

Abilities and team roles
PUBG generally asks teammates to create roles through equipment, positioning and communication. Apex makes those roles explicit through Legends with powerful abilities. Warzone’s Operators provide character presentation and a large roster, but its official description does not frame the game as a hero-based role system. NARAKA combines hero skills with a combat system in which a player’s mechanical decisions remain highly visible.
Comebacks
Traditional battle royale elimination can make an early mistake costly. Warzone’s Resurgence directly addresses that frustration by allowing fallen teammates to redeploy under its mode rules. Black Ops Royale deliberately removes loadouts, the Gulag and Buy Stations, creating a harsher scavenging-focused variant. Apex and NARAKA also organize their experiences around mode-specific rules, so read the current mode description rather than assuming every playlist has the same revival system.
Platform and local access
A free-to-play label does not guarantee that a game is listed in every country, on every storefront or with identical content. Confirm the platform, account requirement, language support, age rating, download size and payment restrictions for your region. Console storefronts can also show different edition names or installation requirements than PC stores.
Call of Duty: Warzone: the closest structural change
What the official description promises
Activision describes Warzone as “the ultimate free to play combat experience,” built around massive battlegrounds, a deep cast of Operators and an expanding arsenal of weapons. That makes it the most natural first stop for a PUBG player who wants to retain squad looting, firearm mastery and a large battlefield while gaining more playlist variety.
Battle Royale
Warzone’s Battle Royale uses squad looting and a shrinking gas field. The familiar rhythm is intact: land, gather equipment, rotate toward safety, win fights or avoid them, and survive the final collapse. The important difference is that Warzone’s broader Call of Duty combat language can feel faster and more aggressive than PUBG’s deliberate pacing. Treat the mode as the baseline if you want a conventional last-team-standing test without committing to a different genre of combat.

Resurgence
Resurgence changes the cost of an early death. Fallen teammates can redeploy, subject to the playlist’s current rules, so a squad can continue playing after losing one member. This is the best option here for players who enjoy PUBG’s map movement and looting but dislike watching the rest of a match after one bad fight. Because the mode’s redeployment conditions can change, read the in-game rules each season.
Black Ops Royale
Black Ops Royale is intentionally less dependent on the systems that make many modern shooters forgiving. Activision’s description says it removes loadouts, the Gulag and Buy Stations, then emphasizes scavenging and weapon upgrades. Expect more importance on what you find during the match and fewer opportunities to recover through purchased equipment or a separate duel. Choose it when you want Warzone’s scale with a stripped-back ruleset.

Who should choose Warzone?
- You want firearms, squad looting and a shrinking-zone structure to remain the center of the experience.
- You want to switch between a standard Battle Royale, a redeploy-friendly Resurgence match and a scavenging-focused Black Ops Royale playlist.
- You prefer learning one broad shooter ecosystem rather than mastering a hero roster or melee-combat vocabulary.
What may disappoint a PUBG veteran
- Mode rules are not interchangeable; a tactic that works in Battle Royale may be poor in Resurgence or Black Ops Royale.
- Seasonal maps and playlists can rotate, so a mode you see described today may be changed or unavailable later.
- The free-to-play entry point does not mean every cosmetic, pass or optional item is included.
Apex Legends: the ability-driven squad alternative
How Apex changes the team conversation
EA describes Apex as a free-to-play battle royale shooter where legendary characters with powerful abilities team up to compete for fame and fortune. In practical terms, you do not choose only a weapon loadout and landing route; you choose a Legend whose abilities affect scouting, movement, defense, healing or engagement timing. Team composition therefore becomes part of the plan before the first shot.
Classic 60-person Battle Royale
EA identifies classic Battle Royale matches as 60-person games. That gives the format a clear scale while leaving room for other playlists, limited-time modes and takeovers. If you want a recognizable battle-royale match but with more structured squad identity, start with the classic playlist before experimenting with temporary formats.
Abilities are not a replacement for gun skill
Apex remains a shooter. Abilities create openings, information and escape routes, but a team still has to aim, manage ammunition, choose angles and finish fights. The change from PUBG is that the same piece of terrain can be attacked differently depending on the Legends present. A coordinated squad can combine abilities to initiate, deny space or disengage instead of relying only on smoke, cover and raw positioning.

Who should choose Apex?
- You want teammates to have clearly differentiated jobs rather than identical soldiers with different equipment.
- You enjoy learning a roster and adapting tactics to ability cooldowns.
- You prefer a battle royale that supports tactical squad play beyond voice-call coordination.
Platforms and storage
EA’s download page lists the EA app, Steam, Epic Games, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The same product information currently states a 75 GB hard-drive requirement for Windows. Treat that number as a current listing, not a permanent specification: updates and regional installation packages can alter the space needed. Leave additional free storage for patches before beginning a large download.
What may disappoint a PUBG veteran
- The ability system adds a learning layer that is absent from a purely equipment-driven squad.
- Temporary modes and takeovers can change the available rules, so tutorials or guides for an earlier season may no longer match the live game.
- Knowing a Legend’s ability is not enough; effective play still depends on timing it with teammates and weapon control.
NARAKA: BLADEPOINT: the most radical departure
A battle royale built around melee
Steam describes NARAKA: BLADEPOINT as a fast-paced melee battle royale in which players team up for a different kind of experience. The listing highlights heroes with unique skills, combos, parries, counters, wall-running, parkour and grappling hooks, alongside both melee and ranged weapons. This is not PUBG with swords added as a novelty; the core decision-making changes from holding a firing lane to reading an opponent’s attack and controlling distance.
Movement is part of combat
Wall-running, parkour and grappling let players approach or escape through vertical routes. Position still matters, but the question is not only which cover is safest. You must also ask whether an enemy can climb, swing or traverse around that cover. Mobility creates opportunities for ambushes and retreats that a conventional firearm-only battle royale does not provide.
Parries, counters and combos
In a gunfight, reaction time usually means aiming and taking cover. NARAKA adds attack-state recognition: a player has to identify when to commit, block, parry or counter, then convert the opening into a combo. Ranged weapons remain available, so the game is not a pure arena fighter, but melee exchanges are prominent enough to determine whether the title feels exciting or unfamiliar.
Heroes without the same shooter assumptions
Hero skills give each character a distinct tactical identity, yet the surrounding combat is still governed by movement and timing rather than only ability cooldowns. Choose NARAKA if you want abilities to complement a substantially different fighting system, not if you are looking for another conventional assault-rifle-and-cover loop.

Who should choose NARAKA?
- You want the largest possible change from firearm-first battle royale play.
- You enjoy practice-based combat systems involving parries, counters, combos and spacing.
- You want vertical traversal and grappling to be meaningful parts of a match.
- You are comfortable learning a new vocabulary of attacks instead of transferring PUBG muscle memory directly.

Steam lists NARAKA: BLADEPOINT as free to play, with 24 Entertainment as developer and NetEase Games as publisher. Confirm the current regional Steam listing and installation requirements before downloading; the free-to-play status and available content can be revised by the publisher.

“Keep the gunplay, but give me more ways to play”
Pick Warzone. Its three described rule sets offer the clearest spread: traditional Battle Royale, Resurgence with redeploys, and Black Ops Royale without loadouts, Gulag or Buy Stations. You can move between familiar and experimental rules without leaving the same shooter ecosystem.
“Make my squad’s abilities matter”
Pick Apex Legends. Its defining pitch is characters with powerful abilities working together, and EA explicitly emphasizes tactical squad play. Expect a bigger up-front learning commitment because choosing and coordinating Legends is part of winning.
“I want to stop playing a conventional shooter”
Pick NARAKA: BLADEPOINT. Melee, parries, counters, parkour and grappling make it the strongest recommendation for a deliberate genre shift. Its ranged weapons preserve some battle-royale familiarity, but the deciding skill is often close-range timing.

“I need a game that runs on my platform”
Apex has the most explicit platform list in the available product information: EA app, Steam, Epic Games, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Warzone’s official page links PC storefronts and consoles without a stable platform list in the description summarized here. NARAKA’s cited access point is Steam. Verify the local store rather than inferring availability from a global announcement.
Free-to-play does not mean identical access
Warzone, Apex Legends and NARAKA: BLADEPOINT are each characterized as free to play by their official description or storefront. That tells you the initial game license is not a conventional full-price purchase; it does not establish that every cosmetic, seasonal item, platform service or regional payment option is free. Before installing, check:
- Whether your country’s storefront lists the game and supports downloads.
- Whether console multiplayer requires a separate online-service subscription.
- The current installation size and available disk space, including room for updates.
- Which modes, maps and events are live now rather than shown in an archived announcement.
- Whether parental controls, age ratings or account linking affect access.
A practical switching plan
- Choose the axis you want to change. Select Warzone for mode variety, Apex for explicit character roles, or NARAKA for melee and mobility.
- Install from the platform’s current store. Use the official listing for your region and record the stated storage requirement before starting the download.

Common mistakes when choosing a PUBG alternative
Judging every game only by gunplay
That test favors Warzone before you have considered the reason for switching. If your real complaint is repetitive squad roles, Apex addresses it more directly. If your complaint is that battle royale shooters feel too similar, NARAKA changes the combat foundation.

Assuming a mode name guarantees the same rules
Battle Royale, Resurgence and Black Ops Royale are not cosmetic labels in Warzone. Redeployment, loadouts, the Gulag and Buy Stations differ by mode. Likewise, Apex’s limited-time modes and takeovers can alter the standard experience.
Installing without checking space
Large live-service downloads need room for updates as well as the initial package. Apex’s current Windows listing says 75 GB; reserve more than the headline figure when possible, and check the store listing for the other games immediately before installation.
Treating free-to-play as a permanent promise
Free entry is a useful filter, not a guarantee that regional access, platform services or future content will remain unchanged. Verify the local storefront on the day you install.
