If you want another game that makes its own rules, story, or interface part of the experience, start with Inscryption or The Hex. Both come from Pony Island creator Daniel Mullins. Inscryption is the closer choice for horror and puzzles; The Hex is the better fit for a story about video-game characters and genre conventions. Doki Doki Literature Club is worth considering for boundary-blurring horror, but it is a thematic match rather than a puzzle-game equivalent.
What makes Pony Island hard to replace?
Pony Island is more than an arcade game with a strange story. Its Steam description calls it “a suspense puzzle game in disguise”: the player is trapped in limbo inside a malevolent, malfunctioning arcade machine, repairing the fictional game’s broken code, playing the devil’s pony game, and exploring the cryptic software system behind it. The appeal comes from that overlap between puzzles, arcade play, and the idea that the software itself is part of the fiction.
That mix is a useful way to choose a follow-up. Decide whether you most want the same creator, psychological horror and puzzle-solving, or a story that unsettles the line between the game and the person playing it. No single recommendation duplicates Pony Island‘s code-repair structure and tone.
Which game should you try first?
| Game | Best match for | What carries over | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inscryption | Horror, puzzles, and the same creator | Psychological horror and escape-room-style puzzles, from Daniel Mullins | Deckbuilding and roguelike structure are central; it does not use Pony Island‘s arcade-code repair setup. |
| The Hex | Meta storytelling and the same creator | A mystery built around video-game characters and game conventions | Its focus is a murder plot and shifting game genres, not a recreation of Pony Island‘s puzzle mechanics. |
| Doki Doki Literature Club | Horror that blurs fiction and reality | A metanarrative approach that can unsettle the player’s sense of the story’s boundaries | The established comparison is thematic, not a close match in puzzle mechanics. |
Inscryption: the strongest pick for horror and puzzles
Inscryption is the clearest choice if what you want from Pony Island is a combination of unsettling atmosphere and puzzles, while keeping the creator connection. Its official description combines deckbuilding, roguelike structure, escape-room-style puzzles, and psychological horror, and identifies it as a game from the creator of Pony Island and The Hex.
#1 Best Overall
Go in expecting cards to be the core interaction, rather than code or arcade-machine repairs. That difference matters: Inscryption shares the broader blend of horror and puzzle play, but its moment-to-moment structure is distinct.
The Hex: a creator-linked meta story
The Hex is a natural next choice if the appeal of Pony Island was its self-aware treatment of games. Steam describes six video-game protagonists as suspects in a murder plot, and the listing includes psychological horror and puzzle tags. The premise makes the game’s characters and genre conventions central to the story.

- Four playable pony characters
- Create a photo album in your photo studio
- Play multiplayer games and exchange accessories with friends
Choose it for the mystery and its meta-fictional angle, not because it promises the same code puzzles or arcade structure. The listing’s tags indicate elements of horror and puzzle, but the strongest supported point of connection is its creator and its story about video-game characters.
Doki Doki Literature Club: for boundary-blurring horror
Doki Doki Literature Club fits if you are looking for horror that plays with the boundary between a fictional story and the player’s experience. A 2024 article in the Journal of Games Criticism analyzes it alongside Pony Island, arguing that “Both games use metaleptic intrusions as a narrative device to elicit horror and uncertainty.”

That is a narrative and tonal connection, not evidence that it offers a comparable puzzle structure. Consider it for the unsettling meta-horror theme; choose Inscryption if puzzles are essential to your next game.
