Demonologist is the closest overall alternative to Phasmophobia if your group wants cooperative investigation built around identifying supernatural evidence. Choose FOREWARNED for the biggest setting change without abandoning the hunt, Ghost Exile or Ghost Watchers for more direct ghost-hunting variations, Lethal Company for frantic extraction and comedy, and R.E.P.O. when your party has more than four players.
This guide compares the games on investigation fidelity, tone, setting, party size and progression so you can pick the right Phasmo-like ghost game instead of simply choosing the one with the most similar title.
Quick comparison: which Phasmophobia alternative fits your group?
| Game | Best match for | Player count stated in the available sources | Setting and tone | Investigation or progression emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Demonologist | The closest evidence-focused substitute | One to four players (Steam listing) | Direct co-op supernatural horror | Closest to Phasmophobia’s evidence-and-identification loop |
| FOREWARNED | Players who want investigation in a fresh mythology | Not stated in the available sources | Haunted Egyptian tomb expeditions | Investigate Mejai and recover lore |
| Ghost Exile | A direct ghost-hunting branch | Up to four players | Co-op ghost-hunting horror | Investigation-first structure |
| Ghost Watchers | Players seeking another direct ghost-hunting variation | Not stated in the available sources | Co-op ghost-hunting horror | Investigation premise rather than extraction |
| Lethal Company | Groups that prefer chaos, jokes and a quota | One to four players | Haunted, abandoned spaceships | Collect scrap and survive a run-based extraction loop |
| R.E.P.O. | Larger parties and high-disorder co-op | Up to six players | Co-op horror with an extraction focus | Group survival, retrieval and comedy over formal ghost identification |
The player-count figures above come from the cited Steam listing and a 2026 comparison by Gamelikey; where that material does not give a number, the table says “not stated” rather than guessing.

Demonologist: the closest Phasmophobia-like investigation game
Why it is the default recommendation
Demonologist is the strongest first stop for a Phasmophobia group because it preserves the central reason people search for “games like Phasmophobia”: entering a dangerous location together, gathering clues and working toward a supernatural identification. The available Steam description classifies it as one-to-four-player cooperative horror, matching the small-team format that makes evidence gathering manageable without turning every investigation into a solo task.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That similarity matters more than surface details such as map art or monster names. A useful substitute has to preserve the conversation between players: one person checks a clue, another watches the environment, and the team decides whether it has enough evidence to commit. Demonologist is the option in this list described most directly as an evidence-focused substitute, so it is the least disruptive switch for a group that already understands Phasmophobia’s rhythm.
Who should choose it
- Choose it when your group wants investigation to remain the main activity rather than a pretext for an extraction run.
- Choose it when a party of up to four is the normal size and you want a game presented explicitly for that format.
- Choose it when you want the shortest learning curve from Phasmophobia’s style of co-op horror.
What to expect before buying
Demonologist is a close fit, not an identical game. The evidence describes its role in the comparison, but does not establish identical maps, equipment, progression systems or content volume. Treat “closest” as a statement about the investigation loop and group format, not a promise that every rule transfers one-for-one.
FOREWARNED: Egyptian tomb expeditions with a familiar hunt structure
The defining change
FOREWARNED keeps cooperative investigation but replaces the usual haunted-house framing with expeditions into Egyptian tombs. Your team investigates Mejai and recovers lore, making the setting change much more substantial than a simple new collection of ghost types. If your group enjoys the methodical part of Phasmophobia but wants a different mythology, this is the clearest recommendation.

A tomb expedition changes the questions your team asks while it plays. Instead of treating every location as another variation on a modern haunting, players are encouraged to read the environment as an archaeological site and connect discoveries to the Mejai. That gives the investigation a stronger sense of place and makes lore collection part of the reason to return.
Best fit and trade-offs
- Best for: groups that want co-op horror with evidence gathering but are tired of conventional haunted-building scenarios.
- Progression appeal: recovering lore gives investigations a purpose beyond simply naming the entity and leaving.
- Trade-off: the mythology and expedition framing are deliberately different, so players looking for a near-clone should start with Demonologist instead.
The available material does not state FOREWARNED’s party limit, platform details or pricing. Check the current store listing for those practical requirements before organizing a session.

Ghost Exile and Ghost Watchers: direct branches of the ghost-hunting formula
Ghost Exile
Ghost Exile is identified in the 2026 comparison as a direct ghost-hunting branch and is reported there as supporting up to four players. That makes it a natural candidate for a standard small co-op group that wants the premise to stay centered on investigating a haunting rather than meeting a scrap quota or extracting valuables.
Its place in this list is about structural fit: the comparison groups it with the games that remain closest to the ghost-hunting premise. The available evidence does not establish a detailed equipment list, progression model, map count or exact evidence rules, so do not assume those systems are interchangeable with Phasmophobia’s.

Ghost Watchers
Ghost Watchers is another direct ghost-hunting option named in the same comparison. It belongs in the “stay with the premise” category: you are still looking for a co-op horror experience built around confronting and investigating ghosts, rather than pivoting to a general extraction game.
The available sources do not state a player count for Ghost Watchers. That is important when planning a session; verify the current listing instead of inferring that it has the same limit as Ghost Exile or Demonologist. The research also does not establish a feature-by-feature comparison of its evidence tools or progression, so use it as a premise match rather than a guaranteed mechanical duplicate.
When to pick one of these two
- Pick Ghost Exile if a four-player ceiling suits your regular group and you want the comparison’s explicitly reported party-size information.
- Investigate Ghost Watchers if you want another ghost-focused branch and are prepared to confirm its current multiplayer details yourself.
- Choose either before an extraction-first game when formal ghost identification is the part your group values most.
Lethal Company: choose extraction chaos over formal identification
What changes from Phasmophobia
Lethal Company is not presented as a formal ghost-identification substitute. PC Gamer describes a one-to-four-player, run-based loop in which the crew collects scrap from haunted abandoned spaceships to meet a quota. The objective therefore shifts from proving what entity is present to getting valuable material out while the run is still viable.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That shift changes the social energy. In an investigation game, discussion is usually about evidence confidence and whether to continue collecting clues. In Lethal Company, the memorable decisions are more immediate: whether the team has enough scrap, whether it can risk another room, and whether a chaotic retreat is better than a greedy one. The haunted setting supplies danger, but the quota supplies the pressure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why groups still recommend it as a Phasmophobia alternative
Phasmophobia helped spur a wider wave of co-op horror, and PC Gamer lists Lethal Company among the successors alongside R.E.P.O., Demonologist, Devour and FOREWARNED. It belongs in this guide because it delivers the same valuable ingredient—friends coordinating under supernatural pressure—while deliberately replacing evidence work with extraction and comedy.
Choose it when
- Your group prefers frantic runs and stories about mistakes over careful entity classification.
- You want a clear team objective, with scrap collection and a quota creating a measurable reason to continue.
- You are comfortable with a game that is “like Phasmophobia” in co-op horror atmosphere, not in investigation procedure.
Do not select Lethal Company expecting the closest replacement for an evidence notebook or a formal ghost-identification routine. Demonologist, Ghost Exile and Ghost Watchers are better aligned with that specific desire.
R.E.P.O.: the practical choice for a larger party
The six-player distinction
R.E.P.O. is the standout recommendation when your group is larger than the usual four-player session. Gamelikey’s 2026 comparison reports support for up to six players, compared with the four-player limits reported for Demonologist and Ghost Exile. That extra capacity can decide the purchase before any question of tone or setting: a game that cannot fit the full group creates its own failure state.
How its focus differs
The comparison places R.E.P.O. on the extraction, chaos and group-comedy side of the spectrum. In practical terms, it is a better match for players who want everyone involved in a noisy, unpredictable co-op run than for a team that wants to quietly verify a ghost type. The appeal is shared disorder and survival pressure rather than strict investigative fidelity.

Planning a session
- Start with R.E.P.O. when six people are likely to join and splitting the party would undermine the evening.
- Use it for a social session where communication, rescues and improvised plans matter more than a clean investigation.
- Move to Demonologist or another direct ghost-hunting game if the group’s main complaint is that extraction games do not provide enough evidence work.
The six-player figure is the number reported by the cited 2026 comparison. Confirm the current listing for any changes to capacity, platform availability or access requirements.

Investigation fidelity
If “investigation” means gathering evidence to identify a supernatural presence, Demonologist is the clearest match. Ghost Exile and Ghost Watchers remain in the direct ghost-hunting category. FOREWARNED retains cooperative investigation but expresses it through Mejai and tomb lore. Lethal Company and R.E.P.O. are better understood as co-op horror extraction games: the supernatural setting remains, but formal identification is no longer the central objective.
Tone
Demonologist, Ghost Exile and Ghost Watchers are the serious-horror choices in this set. FOREWARNED adds expedition and mythology to the tension. Lethal Company and R.E.P.O. lean toward chaos and comedy, making them suitable when the group wants to laugh at disastrous decisions as much as it wants to feel scared.
Setting
FOREWARNED offers the most pronounced setting change through Egyptian tomb expeditions. Lethal Company moves the action to abandoned spaceships. The remaining direct ghost-hunting choices keep the premise closer to the haunted-location expectation associated with Phasmophobia, although the available sources do not document each game’s specific map themes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsParty size
Use the stated limits as a scheduling tool, not as a quality ranking. A one-to-four-player game is ideal for a regular small squad; R.E.P.O.’s reported six-player capacity is more useful for a larger friend group. Where a source does not state a limit, verify the current store page before promising a full party a place.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Progression
FOREWARNED’s lore recovery gives its investigations a discovery layer. Lethal Company’s quota gives each run a concrete extraction target. The available material characterizes Demonologist, Ghost Exile and Ghost Watchers primarily by their investigation premise, and R.E.P.O. by its extraction-oriented co-op. It does not provide enough information to rank their long-term unlock trees, so do not choose on an assumed progression system.
A decision guide for your next co-op night
- Count the players. If six people need to play together, begin with R.E.P.O. If the group is four or fewer, all of the options with stated small-party support remain possible.
- Define the objective. Say whether the evening is about identifying a ghost, exploring a different mythology, or extracting valuables under pressure. This single choice removes most of the mismatch.
- Choose the tone. Select a direct ghost-hunting game for sustained horror, FOREWARNED for archaeological atmosphere, or an extraction title for comedy and panic.
- Check unstated details. Before buying, confirm the current platform listing, player limit, edition and pricing for any title whose details are not established here.
- Set expectations in the group chat. Tell friends whether they should expect evidence gathering or a quota-driven run. Misaligned expectations are more likely to spoil the first session than the difference between two horror settings.
Why there are so many games like Phasmophobia
Phasmophobia’s creator, Daniel Knight, explained to PC Gamer: “But the reason why I made the game was because nothing like it existed, and I wanted to play that game.” The same coverage credits Phasmophobia with helping spur a wave of co-op horror games, including Lethal Company, R.E.P.O., Demonologist, Devour and FOREWARNED.
That history explains why “games like Phasmophobia” is a broad search phrase rather than a precise genre label. Some successors copy the investigation tension; others copy only the cooperative fear, then build a different objective around it. Treating every title as a direct replacement leads to disappointment. The useful question is which part of the experience your group is trying to preserve.
Common selection mistakes
Choosing by monster theme alone
A ghostly setting does not guarantee an evidence-focused game. Lethal Company and R.E.P.O. demonstrate how a haunted environment can support extraction and comedy instead. Read the objective first, then the creature list.
Assuming every four-player game works for six
Party size is a hard compatibility constraint. The reported four-player limits for Demonologist and Ghost Exile cannot be stretched without leaving someone out. R.E.P.O. is the only option here with a six-player figure supplied by the comparison.
Expecting identical progression
Similarity in co-op horror does not establish identical unlocks, maps, equipment or evidence rules. The available descriptions support a fit-based recommendation, not a claim that these systems transfer unchanged.
Ignoring the source date
Player limits and store information can change. The comparison figures cited here are from 2026, and the Demonologist party size comes from its Steam listing. Recheck the live listing at the time of purchase, especially for games whose current details are not stated in the available material.
Final recommendation by player type
| If your group says… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| “We want the closest evidence-and-investigation experience.” | Demonologist | It is the clearest evidence-focused substitute and supports the familiar small-team format. |
| “We want the hunt, but not another ordinary haunted building.” | FOREWARNED | Egyptian tombs, Mejai investigations and lore recovery provide the strongest setting change. |
| “Keep it about ghosts, not loot.” | Ghost Exile or Ghost Watchers | Both are identified as direct ghost-hunting branches. |
| “Make it chaotic and funny.” | Lethal Company | Its run-based scrap quota turns haunted exploration into extraction pressure. |
| “Six of us want to play together.” | R.E.P.O. | It is the only game here reported to support up to six players. |
For most Phasmophobia players, start with Demonologist. Move to FOREWARNED when mythology and setting matter more than a near-clone, choose Ghost Exile or Ghost Watchers for another direct ghost-hunting branch, and select Lethal Company or R.E.P.O. when the group wants extraction, chaos or a larger roster.
