Sifu is the closest match if you want Chinese kung-fu texture, parries, dodges and close-range flow. Choose Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for demanding deflect timing, Black Myth: Wukong for Chinese action-RPG spectacle, and Devil May Cry 5 for the deepest stylish-combo expression.
Phantom Blade Zero is being presented as a fusion of classic wuxia storytelling and fast, cinematic action. Its publisher and platform descriptions emphasize motion-captured martial arts, choreographed kung-fu, weapon flow and dramatic battles. Those are intended design goals rather than independently verified hands-on findings, so the games below are organized by the parts of that promise they already deliver.
What makes a game feel like Phantom Blade Zero?
The useful comparison is not simply “games with swords.” Phantom Blade Zero’s advertised identity combines several distinct qualities:
- Chinese martial-arts influence: wuxia storytelling, kung-fu movement and a stylized cinematic presentation.
- Fast defensive exchanges: parries, dodges and attack-reading rather than slow, purely positional swordplay.
- Weapon and move-set expression: a sense that fights flow through different attacks, tools or weapons instead of one repeated strike.
- Set-piece presentation: memorable opponents, finishers and battles staged for spectacle.
- Substantial adventure structure: Phantom Blade Zero is being positioned as more than a compact arena brawler, with an action-game scale that sits closer to an action RPG.
No single substitute reproduces every one of those elements. Sifu is strongest on hand-to-hand kung fu, Sekiro on deflect rhythm, Wukong on Chinese action-RPG spectacle and Devil May Cry 5 on expressive combos. The right choice depends on which part of the formula matters most to you.

| Game | Best for | Combat structure | Defensive rhythm | Identity and scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sifu | Close-range Chinese kung-fu flow | Focused third-person brawler with replay and mastery pressure | Parries and dodges integrated with strikes and environmental positioning | Chinese martial-arts setting; concentrated combat scenarios |
| Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | Precise deflects and demanding bosses | Stealth-action adventure with vertical traversal and prosthetic tools | Defense-timing-centric; attacks are answered with accurate deflects | Late-1500s Sengoku Japan; larger traversal and exploration spaces |

1. Sifu: the closest hand-to-hand kung-fu match
Sifu is the clearest recommendation when your priority is the physical texture of Chinese martial arts. Its combat is built around dodging, parrying, striking, combos and using the environment to control a fight. That combination creates the close-range flow many readers are seeking when they describe Phantom Blade Zero as cinematic kung-fu rather than a conventional sword game.
Why Sifu matches
- Its third-person brawler design keeps the camera close to the action, making every parry, sidestep and counter easy to read.
- Attacks, defensive responses and environmental positioning are part of one system rather than separate minigames.
- The revenge hunt for the assassins responsible for the protagonist’s family gives encounters a direct dramatic purpose.
- Replay and mastery pressure encourage you to revisit stages, refine routes and improve execution instead of simply finishing once.
Where it differs
Sifu is a focused brawler, not a large action-RPG presentation. Its compact, replayable combat scenarios put pressure on mastery and consistency. If you want broad exploration, a substantial weapon collection or a long-form adventure structure, another game on this list will fit better.
Choose Sifu if…
You want Chinese martial-arts movement first, a tight parry-and-dodge loop second, and you are comfortable repeating encounters until your technique improves. It is the best starting point for someone asking specifically for “kung-fu combat like Phantom Blade Zero,” provided they understand that its scale is more concentrated.
2. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: the best deflect-rhythm substitute
Sekiro is the strongest choice when the word “parry” is doing most of the work in your request. You play a one-armed wolf pursuing revenge in late-1500s Sengoku Japan. Its fights revolve around reading an opponent’s attack, answering at the correct instant and maintaining pressure through demanding boss encounters.

Why Sekiro matches
- Deflects are the central defensive answer, giving battles a clear back-and-forth rhythm.
- Bosses demand repeated practice, pattern recognition and precise timing rather than passive blocking.
- Stealth, vertical traversal and prosthetic tools add options before and during combat.
- The adventure structure supplies larger traversal and exploration spaces than a compact brawler.
Where it differs
Sekiro’s cultural identity is Japanese, not Chinese wuxia. Its combat is also more defense-timing-centric than Phantom Blade Zero’s advertised broader weapon-switching and kungfupunk flow. You will not get the same wuxia setting or martial-arts vocabulary, but you will get an exceptionally clear lesson in how a cinematic sword fight can be built around deflect timing.
Choose Sekiro if…
Your ideal fight is a tense exchange in which every incoming strike must be read and answered. It is particularly suitable if you value demanding bosses and are willing to practice the same encounter repeatedly. It is less suitable if visual and cultural fidelity to Chinese kung-fu matters more than mechanical precision.
3. Black Myth: Wukong: the best Chinese action-RPG spectacle
Black Myth: Wukong is the broadest thematic and scale match. Preview coverage has described it as a close parallel to Phantom Blade Zero in direction and size, with large boss fights, a substantial weapon collection and a steel-on-steel rhythm. Its Chinese mythic setting gives it a cultural and visual connection that games set in Japan or contemporary fantasy cannot provide.

Why Wukong matches
- Chinese mythic references supply the strongest shared regional and visual context.
- Large, varied bosses support the sense of a premium single-player action adventure.
- A broader action-RPG progression frame makes it a better fit for players who want more than isolated combat scenarios.
- Its scale and presentation are closer to the kind of cinematic spectacle implied by Phantom Blade Zero’s promotion.
Where it differs
Wukong should not be treated as a one-to-one control match. Its combat emphasis and progression are distinct from Phantom Blade Zero’s advertised kungfupunk weapon flow. A thematic connection, Chinese setting and action-RPG scope do not guarantee identical parry timing, weapon switching or finisher behavior.

Choose Wukong if…
You want Chinese-inspired spectacle, varied bosses and a larger single-player action-RPG structure. It is the sensible pick for readers who care about atmosphere and scale as much as they care about the exact feel of a parry.
4. Devil May Cry 5: the best expressive-combo alternative
Devil May Cry 5 is the least direct martial-arts match, but it covers the “cinematic action with a very high expression ceiling” part of the request better than the other choices. It is a character-action spectacle fighter built around stylish, improvisational offense, multiple playable characters and missions designed to showcase combat performance.
Why Devil May Cry 5 matches
- Combos can be extended, varied and improvised, rewarding execution and creativity.
- Multiple playable characters provide different offensive tool sets and movement styles.
- The spectacle ceiling is high: skilled play turns ordinary encounters into choreographed action sequences.
- Its mission-based structure keeps the focus on authored combat scenarios and performance.
Where it differs
The setting is contemporary gothic fantasy rather than Chinese wuxia, and defense is not the defining rhythm. The game primarily rewards offensive control, launchers, cancels and style maintenance. If your requirement is authentic martial-arts texture or a parry-led duel, Sifu or Sekiro is a better fit.
Choose Devil May Cry 5 if…
You want the freedom to improvise spectacular strings and judge yourself by execution and style. It is the right substitute for the cinematic-action ambition, not for Phantom Blade Zero’s cultural identity.

Which game should you play first?
Use the following decision path to avoid choosing by setting alone.
- Put Chinese kung-fu movement first? Start with Sifu. It most directly supplies close-range martial-arts texture, parries, dodges and environmental positioning.
- Want every fight to revolve around deflect timing? Choose Sekiro. Its identity is built around reading attacks and answering precisely.
- Want Chinese spectacle plus a larger action-RPG adventure? Choose Black Myth: Wukong. Expect a different combat emphasis, not a replica of Phantom Blade Zero.
- Want maximum combo creativity and stylish offense? Choose Devil May Cry 5. It is the strongest expression-focused alternative even though its setting is unrelated.
Defense rhythm: parries, dodges or offense?
Defensive timing is one of the easiest ways to distinguish these games.
| Priority | Best fit | What you will practice |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced close-range defense | Sifu | Mixing parries and dodges with strikes, combos and environmental positioning |
| Strict deflect timing | Sekiro | Reading attack animations and maintaining pressure through precise answers |
| Action-RPG combat variety | Black Myth: Wukong | Managing a broader progression and varied boss encounters rather than copying one fixed rhythm |
| Offensive expression | Devil May Cry 5 | Controlling combos, switching options and preserving style through aggressive play |
That distinction matters because “fast combat” can mean two different things. In Sifu and Sekiro, speed comes from reacting correctly inside an exchange. In Devil May Cry 5, speed is largely the result of keeping an offensive sequence moving. Wukong occupies the action-RPG middle ground, where progression and boss variety shape the pace as much as a single defensive mechanic.

Focused replay: Sifu
Sifu concentrates on replayable combat scenarios and mastery pressure. That makes it efficient for practicing a specific defensive skill, but it is not the choice for players who need extensive traversal or a large exploration loop.
Traversal-led adventure: Sekiro
Sekiro combines stealth, vertical movement, prosthetic tools and combat. Exploration is not decoration; it changes how you approach encounters and supplies an alternative to walking directly into every fight.
Action-RPG scale: Black Myth: Wukong
Wukong is the appropriate option when progression, boss variety and a premium single-player action-RPG frame are part of the appeal. Its broader structure gives the spectacle more room, even though its controls should not be assumed to match Phantom Blade Zero.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAuthored missions: Devil May Cry 5
Devil May Cry 5 keeps attention on designed missions and combat performance. Exploration is secondary to learning character-specific tools and expressing them through stylish encounters.
Difficulty and mastery expectations
These games reward different kinds of persistence.
- Sifu: repeated runs and refinement are central. Improvement comes from learning enemy behavior, cleaning up defensive decisions and reaching later scenarios more consistently.
- Sekiro: repeated boss attempts are part of the intended learning curve. Progress depends on recognizing attacks and committing to accurate deflects instead of relying on a broad defensive safety net.
- Black Myth: Wukong: the action-RPG framework gives progression and varied encounters a larger role, so mastery is distributed across a broader adventure rather than concentrated entirely on one duel rhythm.
- Devil May Cry 5: execution and style are the challenge. The game rewards players who experiment with moves, characters and combo routes, then turn that knowledge into controlled spectacle.
If you dislike repeating a stage, Sifu may feel demanding even when its individual fights are readable. If you dislike learning a boss through failure, Sekiro is the least forgiving recommendation. If you prefer progression to reset your options between difficult encounters, Wukong’s action-RPG structure is the better direction. If you want difficulty to mean “how stylish and varied can I play?” choose Devil May Cry 5.
How to choose a game while waiting for Phantom Blade Zero
- Identify your non-negotiable. Write down one priority: Chinese martial arts, deflect timing, action-RPG scale or combo freedom.
- Accept the setting trade-off. Sifu and Wukong provide Chinese context; Sekiro is Sengoku Japanese; Devil May Cry 5 is contemporary gothic fantasy.
- Pick the matching combat loop. Select parry-and-dodge flow for Sifu, deflect duels for Sekiro, progression and boss variety for Wukong, or offensive combo expression for Devil May Cry 5.
- Match the expected scope. Choose Sifu for concentrated replay, Sekiro or Wukong for traversal and exploration, and Devil May Cry 5 for authored missions built around combat performance.
- Set expectations about Phantom Blade Zero. Its wuxia, cinematic and fast-paced descriptions come from official positioning. These recommendations demonstrate individual parts of that target; none proves how the unreleased game will ultimately control or how closely it will resemble any one of them.
Final ranking by player type
| If you are looking for… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese kung-fu texture and close-range flow | Sifu | Its brawler combat directly combines parries, dodges, strikes, combos and environmental positioning. |
| Parry-heavy, high-precision duels | Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | Deflect timing and demanding bosses define the experience. |
| Chinese spectacle in a larger action RPG | Black Myth: Wukong | It pairs Chinese mythic presentation with varied bosses and broader progression. |
| Stylish, improvisational combat | Devil May Cry 5 | Multiple characters and expressive combo systems deliver the highest offensive spectacle. |
For most readers, the practical order is Sifu first, Sekiro second, Black Myth: Wukong third and Devil May Cry 5 fourth. Change that order when your priority changes: Wukong moves to the top for Chinese action-RPG scale, Sekiro for deflect mastery, and Devil May Cry 5 for combo expression. Phantom Blade Zero’s eventual appeal will depend on how successfully it combines those qualities; these games let you experience each major piece now.
