Start with Immortals Fenyx Rising if you want the closest combination of modern controls, colorful free-roaming exploration and puzzle landmarks. Choose Okami HD for the nearest non-Zelda version of Ocarina of Time’s directed 3D adventure structure, or TUNIC if secrets, environmental puzzles and deciphering a game world matter more than a third-person camera.
Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West are broader alternatives. They offer large-scale discovery, but their combat systems, tone and progression differ substantially from Zelda. No game reproduces every part of Ocarina of Time, so the right choice depends on whether you value dungeons, open-world freedom, puzzle density, combat difficulty or the feeling of uncovering hidden information.

What “like Ocarina of Time” means in a modern game
Ocarina of Time is remembered as one experience, but its appeal comes from several systems working together. A replacement can match one of them closely while departing from the others. Separating those qualities makes the recommendations more useful than simply listing games with swords and puzzles.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore the much-loved world of Horizon and come face-to-face with the game’s awe-inspiring machines – all faithfully recreated in LEGO bricks.
- Experience thrilling online and couch co-op action with friends and family (Online play may require a paid online subscription).
- Enjoy an exciting mix of action, exploration, customization, and laugh-out-loud LEGO humour.
- Engage in explosive combat with spectacular weapons, power-ups, and gadgets.
- Soak up stunning cinematic visuals, built with life-like LEGO bricks.
Free movement and readable spaces
The original 3D Zelda established a strong relationship between movement and discovery. You could see a landmark, travel toward it and learn that the route itself contained a clue, obstacle or reward. An open-world successor should make exploration purposeful rather than merely large. Immortals Fenyx Rising is the clearest fit because its world is explicitly built around free roaming across themed regions and puzzle sites.
Dungeons, keys and ability-gated progress
Ocarina’s dungeons are structured problem-solving spaces. New equipment or abilities change which rooms are reachable and how familiar rooms should be read. Okami HD most closely follows this directed journey pattern, with dungeons, combat, exploration and powers earned during the adventure. The other recommendations are less traditional: TUNIC turns the whole world into a secret, while Elden Ring emphasizes optional routes and combat mastery rather than conventional Zelda-style dungeon pacing.
Controls that do not fight the camera
“Modern controls” should mean more than a newer release date. Look for responsive movement, an independently controllable camera where the game uses a third-person view, reliable target selection, clear action prompts and menus that do not interrupt every small interaction. A game can feel modern while retaining deliberate combat; it does not need to be fast or easy.
A world that withholds information fairly
Ocarina of Time often lets players infer the solution from architecture, dialogue, sound or item placement. TUNIC makes this principle central: its manual pages and environmental details gradually reveal how the world works. Elden Ring also relies on mystery, but its clues are less likely to lead to a conventional puzzle solution and more likely to point toward an optional encounter or dangerous route.
Immortals Fenyx Rising: the strongest open-world Zelda-style match
Why it is the first recommendation
Choose Immortals Fenyx Rising when your priority is leaving a central path, climbing toward a visible landmark and solving a puzzle on the way. Nintendo’s product description calls it “a stylized open world across seven unique regions, each inspired by the gods.” That combination of themed areas, free roaming and puzzle solving makes it the most direct answer to the question, “What feels like Zelda in a bigger open world?”
The game treats exploration as a sequence of ability checks and environmental problems rather than as a scenery tour. You can approach landmarks from different directions, identify a puzzle’s rule and use the character’s growing abilities to reach places that were previously impractical. The result is closer to a collection of large outdoor puzzle spaces than to a single traditional dungeon.
How the controls and progression differ from Ocarina
Its modern presentation is built around contemporary third-person movement and a camera designed for free-roaming spaces. The design is more systems-driven than Ocarina of Time: abilities, traversal and puzzle interactions are used repeatedly across the world, and the tone is openly humorous. That makes the experience more accessible for players who want experimentation and movement, but less suitable for anyone seeking Ocarina’s solemn mythology or tightly authored dungeon sequence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Progression is also less linear. Instead of waiting for one dungeon item to define the next chapter, you can spend time exploring, improving abilities and tackling optional puzzle landmarks. This supports wandering, but it means the game does not deliver the same carefully staged escalation from one major dungeon to the next.
Who should play it
- Players who want a colorful world with visible landmarks and frequent environmental puzzles.
- Players who prefer modern free-roaming controls to a fixed route through a quest.
- Players who enjoy experimenting with abilities and solving several variations of a puzzle concept.
- Players who are comfortable with a lighter, more comedic tone.
The Nintendo Switch edition is the platform specifically evidenced for this recommendation. Check the current regional store listing before buying, since edition availability and included content can change.

Okami HD: the closest classic 3D adventure structure
Why it resembles a traditional Zelda journey
Okami HD is the best choice when what you miss is not simply an open map, but the rhythm of a directed 3D adventure: visit communities, meet characters, enter dungeons, fight through them, earn a new power and use that power to understand the world differently. It has the towns, dungeons, combat, exploration and NPC-driven journey that define the older Zelda pattern.
Its central visual and mechanical idea is brush-based. Instead of presenting every interaction through conventional equipment, the game uses a brush system as a way to affect the environment and solve problems. This gives exploration a distinctly authored feel: the world is full of situations that ask you to recognize what can be changed and which power applies.

The HD edition is the practical way to experience the game on current consoles, but its design remains rooted in the earlier 3D action-adventure era. Expect deliberate movement, a camera that sometimes requires active management and combat built around identifying an enemy’s opening rather than simply attacking as quickly as possible. The controls are more contemporary than playing an original release, yet the game’s pacing and interaction model are intentionally old-school.
That distinction matters. If “modern controls” means a familiar third-person layout and a remastered presentation, Okami HD qualifies. If it means the most fluid camera and the least friction in every interaction, Immortals Fenyx Rising is a safer choice.
Who should play it
- Players who want dungeons and a clearly authored sequence of powers.
- Players who enjoy character-focused towns and a journey shaped by NPCs.
- Players who want a distinctive art direction rather than realistic visuals.
- Players who can accept brush-based combat and environmental interaction.
The HD release is evidenced on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Confirm the specific store edition and language options for your region before purchase.
TUNIC: the best game for secrets and deciphering a world
What it captures from Zelda
TUNIC is a top-down isometric action-adventure game inspired by the original Legend of Zelda. Its strongest connection to Ocarina of Time is the feeling that the world contains information you have not yet learned to read. Items, symbols, routes and manual pages become clues. Progress often comes from understanding a rule or noticing a connection rather than from following a quest marker.
The game combines hidden information, environmental puzzles, bosses and a world-as-puzzle design. A page found in one area may explain a symbol seen somewhere else. A path that looked decorative can become meaningful after you understand an instruction. This creates the same satisfying shift Ocarina achieves when a newly acquired item changes how you interpret familiar rooms.
The isometric trade-off
The camera is not third-person. You view the action from an isometric angle, so it cannot reproduce Ocarina’s lock-on duels, horseback perspective or cinematic room reveals. The compact scale is deliberate: rather than offering a huge landscape, TUNIC concentrates secrets into a world where short distances can hide substantial discoveries.
Combat is active and bosses can be demanding, but the central challenge is comprehension. You are expected to test ideas, consult the information you have collected and accept that some solutions may remain opaque until a later realization. Players who want immediate map clarity may find this frustrating; players who enjoy reconstructing a game’s language often consider it the main attraction.

Elden Ring: choose it for mystery and hard combat
Where the comparison works
Elden Ring belongs on this list as a broader comparison, not as a one-to-one Ocarina replacement. Its large connected world rewards curiosity, detours and observation. You can see distant structures, discover routes that bypass an obvious objective and uncover optional content without a constant sequence of instructions. That sense of being trusted to investigate is familiar to Zelda players.
The world’s mystery is also compatible with the “what is over there?” impulse that drives open-world exploration. Locations, enemies and story fragments are often discovered in an order determined by the player rather than by a strict dungeon itinerary.
Why it feels very different
Combat is substantially harsher. Timing, stamina management, enemy patterns and build choices matter, and failure is part of learning the game. The pacing is less conventional than Ocarina’s steady movement from one dungeon to the next. Progress may come from surviving a difficult encounter, changing equipment or finding a safer route rather than earning a clearly signposted tool that solves the next environmental puzzle.
For that reason, select Elden Ring only if difficult combat is welcome. If you mainly want cheerful puzzle solving, a readable quest structure and a forgiving adventure, the first three recommendations are better fits.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Horizon Forbidden West: choose it for traversal in a science-fiction world
What Zelda fans may enjoy
Horizon Forbidden West is another broad comparison option. Its appeal lies in large-scale discovery, environmental movement and the pleasure of reaching places that first appeared distant or inaccessible. Exploration is framed through a science-fiction landscape rather than fantasy ruins, but it still asks you to read terrain, identify routes and decide which landmark deserves attention next.
The game’s world supports a strong sense of travel. Movement through varied environments is not merely a way to connect missions; it is part of the attraction. Players who associate Ocarina with leaving a safe area and finding a dramatically different region may appreciate that contrast.
Why it is not a conventional Zelda substitute
Machine combat is the defining system. Encounters focus on identifying mechanical weaknesses, managing ranged and close-range options and preparing for large opponents. The science-fiction setting, mission structure and combat priorities make it a different kind of adventure from Ocarina’s item-based dungeon progression.

Platform and edition caution
Platform availability depends on the edition and current storefront. Confirm the exact version, supported hardware and any cross-generation differences before buying.
Comparison by the qualities players usually miss
| Priority | Best fit | Why | Compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Largest Zelda-style roaming space | Immortals Fenyx Rising | Seven themed regions, free roaming and recurring puzzle landmarks | More humorous and systems-driven than Ocarina |
| Traditional dungeon-and-power journey | Okami HD | Dungeons, combat, exploration, NPCs and powers earned through the adventure | Brush-based art and combat change the feel |
| Secrets and “read the world” discovery | TUNIC | Manual pages, hidden information, puzzles and bosses | Isometric camera and compact scope |
| Unpredictable exploration with demanding fights | Elden Ring | Large connected world and discovery-led progression | Much higher combat difficulty and less Zelda-like pacing |
| Environmental traversal in a different setting | Horizon Forbidden West | Large-scale exploration and movement through a science-fiction world | Machine combat replaces fantasy dungeon combat |
How to judge “modern controls” before you buy
Store descriptions rarely quantify control quality, and there is no authoritative cross-game latency test in the available material. Use practical questions instead of assuming that a remaster or a recent release automatically feels modern.
Camera and movement
- Can the camera be moved independently when the game uses a third-person view?
- Does the game keep important objects visible during combat and climbing?
- Are movement, dodge or jump actions consistent enough to learn?
Combat interaction
- Is target selection dependable, or does it frequently choose the wrong enemy?
- Can you understand why an attack missed or why a guard failed?
- Does the game let you pause, change equipment or review abilities without burying the relevant information?
Exploration feedback
- Are landmarks visually distinct?
- Do puzzles communicate their rule without requiring random experimentation?
- Can you return to an area after gaining a new ability?
These checks explain the recommendations: Immortals Fenyx Rising is the safest all-round modern-control choice, Okami HD preserves a classic structure with some older design habits, and TUNIC intentionally makes information discovery part of the challenge.

Which game should you play first?
If you want one recommendation
Play Immortals Fenyx Rising. It is the clearest overlap between modern third-person controls, a colorful open world, ability-driven exploration and frequent puzzles.
If you want Ocarina’s structure more than its scale
Play Okami HD. Its dungeons, powers, combat, towns and NPC-led journey deliver the most recognizable classic 3D adventure rhythm, even though the brush system and art direction are different.
If your favorite moments were secrets and hidden clues
Play TUNIC. Its isometric camera is the major departure, but its manual pages and environmental discoveries most directly reproduce the feeling of learning a world’s private language.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you want a challenge first
Play Elden Ring, provided you are comfortable with punishing combat and a less conventional progression structure.
If exploration should feel unlike fantasy
Play Horizon Forbidden West. It offers traversal and large-scale discovery in a science-fiction setting, with machine combat as the central system.
In short, there is no single modern game that duplicates every part of Ocarina of Time. Immortals Fenyx Rising is the best open-world answer, Okami HD is the best structural match, and TUNIC is the best discovery-focused alternative. Treat Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West as intentional genre shifts rather than replacements.
