If you want a turn-based RPG built around collecting and raising a monster team, start with Digimon Story: Time Stranger or Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition. DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince is a stronger match for scouting and combining monsters, while Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is an adjacent pick for a darker demon-collecting adventure. These recommendations are based on features described by the publishers, not hands-on comparisons.
Which game should you choose?
- For a new, story-led Digimon adventure: Digimon Story: Time Stranger combines Digimon collecting and raising with explicitly described turn-based battles. Its story spans the human world and Digital World.
- For two Digimon stories and a large roster: Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition includes both Cyber Sleuth games and features more than 300 Digimon to collect, raise, and Digivolve.
- For breeding-style team building: DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince centers on scouting monsters and using synthesis to create stronger offspring.
- For a darker change of tone: Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance lets players battle or befriend demons in a post-apocalyptic setting. The cited official description does not explicitly label its combat turn-based, so treat it as an adjacent option rather than a confirmed close match.
Games like Monster Hunter Stories
Digimon Story: Time Stranger
Bandai Namco describes Time Stranger as an RPG with monster-taming elements, Digimon collecting and raising, and turn-based battles. Its official feature description lists more than 450 Digimon. The adventure moves between the human world and Digital World, making it the clearest pick here if you want a current, story-led monster-collecting RPG. Bandai Namco’s product page lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch; check your regional store for edition and release details. The publisher’s English page also shows a physical-edition option.
DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince
In Square Enix’s monster-RPG, Psaro scouts monsters and builds a team. Its signature mechanic is synthesis: combining two monsters to produce a stronger offspring. That makes it the best fit in this list if the appeal of Monster Hunter Stories is developing a roster through creature-raising mechanics. The fantasy setting includes changing seasons. Square Enix lists Nintendo Switch, Steam, and mobile versions on its official game page; Nintendo also confirms a Switch version in its store listing.
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition
This edition packages both Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory. Bandai Namco describes classic turn-based battles and more than 300 Digimon to collect, raise, and Digivolve. Choose it if you want a substantial Digimon roster and two included stories rather than the newer setting of Time Stranger. The official Bandai Namco page lists Nintendo Switch and Steam.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Atlus’s RPG offers a more severe atmosphere: a demon-overrun, decimated Tokyo, where players can encounter demons to battle or befriend. The publisher describes an improved battle system and expanded areas and demons, but the cited page does not use the same explicit turn-based wording found on the two Digimon Story pages. Pick it if the darker setting and recruiting demons matter more to you than a documented turn-based match. Atlus lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Windows, Steam, and Nintendo Switch on its official game page.
