The best next game depends on which part of Kingdom Hearts you want to keep. If you want another officially identified action RPG but can trade Disney worlds for serious science fiction, NieR:Automata is the clearest match. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is a nearby Square Enix choice for players interested in an action-oriented RPG and a different cast. If you have not played the series—or want to return to it—the Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] is the only option here that preserves Sora’s Disney-world journey.

Those recommendations are not interchangeable. Kingdom Hearts combines action-RPG play with a Disney collaboration, Sora’s travels, and the recurring friendship-and-darkness premise. The other games share only selected ingredients, so use the comparison below to decide which difference you are willing to accept.

What makes Kingdom Hearts a difficult game to replace?

Square Enix describes Kingdom Hearts as an action-RPG series created in collaboration with Disney. Its central setup follows Sora as he travels through Disney worlds with Donald and Goofy. That combination matters because it joins several kinds of appeal that are usually separated: real-time combat, a character-led fantasy adventure, recognizable crossover settings, and an accessible light-versus-darkness story built around friendship.

A replacement can match the combat but lose the crossover worlds. It can offer a large, emotional fantasy narrative but use a very different battle system. It can also reproduce the Disney-world structure only by being another Kingdom Hearts release. Treat “like Kingdom Hearts” as a set of priorities rather than a promise that another game will feel identical.

Quick comparison

Game What is established Best for What changes from Kingdom Hearts Availability note
NieR:Automata Square Enix identifies it as an action RPG. Its official description follows android 2B against machine lifeforms after humanity has retreated to the moon. Players who want action-RPG combat and a strong, original science-fiction setting. No Disney-world crossover, no Sora-Donald-Goofy party, and a more serious premise. Square Enix names a Game of the YoRHa Edition; current stock, physical format, and regional availability are not established here.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Square Enix identifies it as the first part of the remake trilogy and lists current platforms on its official page. Players open to an adjacent Square Enix action-oriented RPG with a different cast and setting. The available official description does not establish enough detail to call its combat especially similar to Kingdom Hearts, and it is not a Disney crossover. Platform lists can change by region and storefront; check Square Enix’s current game page.
Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] Square Enix’s catalog lists the collection and current platform availability. New players and returning fans who want the original series’ structure and characters. It is a return to Kingdom Hearts rather than an alternative series. Confirm your region, platform, edition, and retailer inventory before buying.

1. NieR:Automata — the strongest non-Disney action-RPG alternative

Why it fits

NieR:Automata is the most direct recommendation when your priority is “another action RPG” rather than “another Disney crossover.” Square Enix explicitly identifies the game as an action RPG. Its official premise places android 2B in a distant future where humanity has retreated to the moon and machine lifeforms remain on Earth. That gives you an original world and a character-focused conflict instead of licensed worlds and familiar animated characters.

The useful similarity is structural: both games put a named protagonist at the center of a fantasy (or science-fiction) journey and ask you to engage with the world through real-time action-RPG play. The difference is just as important. NieR:Automata’s setting is deliberately more serious and technological, and nothing in the cited description suggests a Donald-and-Goofy-style companion dynamic or a sequence of Disney destinations.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if responsive action-RPG play is more important to you than a cheerful crossover tone.
  • Choose it if you want an original science-fiction setting rather than adaptations of existing films.
  • Choose it if a single central android protagonist sounds more appealing than Sora’s traveling party.
  • Skip it as a first choice if your main reason for playing Kingdom Hearts is visiting Disney worlds.

Edition and purchasing checks

Square Enix names NieR:Automata Game of the YoRHa Edition on its official page. That title is useful when searching a storefront, but the edition name alone does not establish current Amazon stock, a physical release in your country, or availability on every platform. Before paying, check the official listing and your regional store for the exact platform, included content, language options, and whether the product is digital or physical.

2. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade — an adjacent Square Enix pick

What the recommendation means

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is best treated as an adjacent option, not a mechanical substitute. Square Enix identifies it as the first part of the remake trilogy and lists current platforms on its official page. That makes it relevant to a Kingdom Hearts fan who wants another large Square Enix role-playing production and is willing to learn a different setting and cast.

Final Fantasy VII REMAKE INTERGRADE & REBIRTH Twin Pack (PlayStation 5)
  • Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
  • Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
  • Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
  • Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration

The available official information does not establish enough detail to claim that its combat is especially similar to Kingdom Hearts. Do not buy it expecting a one-to-one match for Sora’s controls, party behavior, or Disney-world progression. Instead, compare official gameplay footage and the current product description for your platform, then decide whether the broader action-oriented RPG format is what you want.

When it is the right choice

  • Pick it when you want to stay with Square Enix but move to a separate story universe.
  • Pick it when “an action-oriented RPG” is sufficient and exact Kingdom Hearts mechanics are not required.
  • Pick it when you are comfortable with a remake project whose listed scope is the first part of a trilogy.

Questions to answer before purchase

  1. Open Square Enix’s current Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade page and confirm that your console or PC storefront is listed.
  2. Check the regional store page rather than relying on an old platform list, because availability can change.
  3. Watch current official gameplay footage if combat feel is your deciding factor; the cited listing does not provide a reliable Kingdom Hearts similarity score.
  4. Confirm whether the product you are viewing is the base game, an edition with additional content, or a bundle, and note the price shown for your region.

3. Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] — the choice that keeps the original formula

Why replaying the series can be the best answer

If your question is really “what should I play after—or before—I understand Kingdom Hearts?” the collection is more useful than forcing a comparison with an unrelated franchise. Square Enix’s catalog lists Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] and current platform availability. Because it is a Kingdom Hearts release, it retains the series’ defining ingredients: Sora’s journey, Disney-world travel, and the partnership with Donald and Goofy described by the publisher.

This is not a recommendation for a new universe. It is the correct option for a newcomer who wants the complete numbered arc represented by the collection, or for a returning player who wants a consolidated way to revisit the games. Check the catalog and your regional storefront for the exact contents; a catalog entry is not proof that every retailer has stock or that a physical edition exists in your market.

Who benefits most

  • New players who have never experienced the series and want its crossover premise rather than a substitute.
  • Returning fans who want to play the numbered games again on a currently supported platform.
  • Players whose favorite feature is the interaction between Sora, Donald, Goofy, and the Disney worlds.

Buying checklist

  1. Confirm the platform shown for your country in Square Enix’s current catalog.
  2. Read the regional product page to verify which games are included under the [I~III] collection label.
  3. Compare the digital listing with local retailer pages if you specifically need a disc or cartridge; the catalog does not establish physical availability.
  4. Check the edition name carefully so you do not confuse the collection with a single-game purchase.

Choose by the part of Kingdom Hearts you want more of

If fast action-RPG play comes first

Start with NieR:Automata, because Square Enix directly labels it an action RPG and supplies a distinct protagonist-and-conflict setup. Keep your expectations focused: the recommendation is about the action-RPG category, not an identical control scheme, party system, or tone. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is a second option if you are comfortable evaluating an adjacent action-oriented RPG on its own terms.

If crossover worlds are non-negotiable

Choose Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III]. The Disney collaboration is not a minor decoration in the publisher’s description; Sora’s travel through Disney worlds with Donald and Goofy is central to the series’ identity. Neither NieR:Automata nor Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade should be presented as sharing that structure.

If you want an original world without Disney

A community question often framed as “Does anyone know of a game similar to KH, but without Disney?” points to a specific preference: keep the emotional action-adventure shape while removing licensed crossover settings. NieR:Automata answers that request more directly than the other options because its world is original and science-fiction based. The trade-off is a more serious premise and a different character setup.

If the emotional fantasy adventure matters most

There is no evidence here for a precise tonal equivalent among the alternatives. Kingdom Hearts’ light-versus-darkness and friendship premise is part of its own identity. The safest approach is to decide whether you want to preserve that tone through the collection or exchange it for NieR:Automata’s distant-future conflict or the separate setting of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.

How to compare games without overpromising similarity

Action-RPG focus

Use publisher classifications where available. Square Enix identifies both Kingdom Hearts and NieR:Automata as action RPGs. That is a source-backed category match. It does not prove that their combat systems, difficulty curves, camera behavior, progression, or party controls are the same. For Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the available material supports calling it an adjacent action-oriented RPG, not declaring a close mechanical match.

Setting and tone

Kingdom Hearts uses Disney worlds and a light-versus-darkness friendship premise. NieR:Automata uses androids, machine lifeforms, and a distant-future setting after humanity’s retreat to the moon. These are meaningful differences, not a quality ranking. The correct choice depends on whether you want familiar crossover locations or a wholly original science-fiction conflict.

Crossover appeal

The Disney collaboration is directly established for Kingdom Hearts. Treat it as a unique feature of the reference series in this comparison. The other two games may appeal to fans for their own casts and settings, but the information available here does not establish a comparable licensed-world structure.

Platform and region

Platform listings are volatile. A game page or catalog entry can change as editions are retired, reissued, or limited by territory. Before buying any of these titles, open the publisher’s current page for your region, select your platform, and then verify the matching storefront listing. Do not infer retailer inventory, physical format, or worldwide availability from a general catalog entry.

A practical decision tree

  1. Do you specifically want Disney worlds and Sora’s party? Choose Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] and verify its regional contents.
  2. Do you want an action RPG but prefer an original science-fiction world? Choose NieR:Automata; review the available Game of the YoRHa Edition listing for your market.
  3. Do you want a different Square Enix RPG and can accept uncertain mechanical similarity? Investigate Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade using current official footage and platform information.
  4. Are you unsure which feature matters most? Rank these four priorities—combat category, crossover worlds, tone, and platform—and select the title that satisfies your top priority without assuming it also satisfies the others.

Common mistakes when shopping for a Kingdom Hearts-like game

Expecting every action RPG to feel the same

The label “action RPG” describes a broad category. It confirms a useful starting point for Kingdom Hearts and NieR:Automata, but not identical controls or pacing. Treat the category as one comparison axis, then inspect official gameplay material for the details that matter to you.

Assuming a collection includes every release

The catalog name Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] identifies a collection, but the entry alone is not a guarantee about every game, bonus, language, or regional edition. Read the current product description before purchase.

Confusing an edition name with guaranteed stock

Game of the YoRHa Edition is a named edition of NieR:Automata. Its presence on an official page does not verify that a retailer has it today, that a physical copy is available, or that the same edition is sold in every country.

Using an outdated platform list

Platform support and storefront listings can change. Recheck the official game page and your local store on the day you buy, especially for Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and the Kingdom Hearts collection.

Bottom line: which game should you play?

For the closest category match outside the series, start with NieR:Automata, while accepting its distant-future science-fiction setting and more serious premise. For a different Square Enix action-oriented RPG, consider Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade without assuming its combat mirrors Kingdom Hearts. If what you truly want is Sora, Disney worlds, Donald, and Goofy, choose Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III]; no alternative listed here reproduces that crossover identity.
