Start with Inscryption if you want the closest match for eerie atmosphere and replayable card runs. Choose Roguebook if your priority is route planning, persistent unlocks, and combining two heroes’ decks. Hungry Horrors is unusual even among deckbuilders: instead of simply reducing enemy hit points, you cook dishes, chain flavor effects, and satisfy the cravings of folklore creatures before they eat you.

Quick picks: which game should you play?

Game Best for What carries over from Hungry Horrors What changes
Inscryption Horror atmosphere and experimental card runs A card system embedded in a strongly authored, unsettling world; roguelike replayability Surreal horror and direct combat replace cooking, ingredients, and flavor matching
Roguebook Map exploration, team building, and persistent progression Run-based deck construction, route decisions, and unlocks across playthroughs You combine two heroes’ combat decks in a fantasy book-world rather than feeding folklore creatures
Hungry Horrors Folklore, food, and a story-driven campaign The distinctive culinary interaction model It is the reference point here, not a substitute for either combat-focused game

There is no single replacement for every part of Hungry Horrors. Inscryption is the stronger follow-up for mood and card experimentation, while Roguebook is the stronger follow-up for exploration and long-term run planning.

What makes Hungry Horrors different?

A deckbuilder built around hunger instead of hit points

Steam describes Hungry Horrors as “a story-driven deckbuilder set in the folklore of the British Isles.” Its central problem is culinary: you collect ingredients, make recipes, season cards, equip cookware, and use potions and familiars while trying to match each Horror’s cravings across five flavors. The goal is to feed legendary creatures before they feed on you.

That changes what a turn means. In a conventional combat deckbuilder, a card usually attacks, blocks, applies a status effect, or improves your engine. In Hungry Horrors, your choices are framed as solving a hunger and flavor puzzle. A useful card is not merely one with high damage; it may be the ingredient, seasoning, recipe, or support item that lets several flavors work together. The result is a system closer to assembling a meal under pressure than trading blows with an enemy.

Campaign progression and harder runs

The game includes a story campaign with persistent progression, plus harder run modifiers. Progress therefore exists on two levels: decisions made during an individual run and improvements that remain available as you continue the campaign. The harder modifiers give experienced players a way to revisit the run structure with additional constraints rather than treating the first completion as the end of the game.

Folkloric travel and tone

Hungry Horrors travels through regions inspired by the folklore of the British Isles. Its presentation is cozy-creepy and colorful rather than relentlessly bleak. Mythical characters, traditional dishes, and comic danger sit beside the threat that a failed encounter leaves you as the meal. That combination is important when choosing a follow-up: readers looking for the exact cooking premise will not find it in the alternatives below, but readers looking for authored worlds, unusual card rules, or repeatable runs will.

Inscryption: the best match for horror atmosphere and card experimentation

Why it fits Hungry Horrors players

Both games make the card system the center of a strongly authored world. You are not selecting cards from an abstract menu and then returning to a neutral battle screen; the rules, setting, and presentation continually reinforce one another. That shared design priority makes Inscryption the most natural recommendation when what you loved was the feeling that every card choice belonged to a strange story.

The difference is emotional register. Inscryption is darker, more surreal, and more oppressive. Hungry Horrors uses British and Irish folklore, food, and a colorful comic sensibility. If you want an unsettling game that can make the act of drawing a card feel threatening, Inscryption is the stronger choice. If you want a lighter folkloric adventure where the tension comes from satisfying cravings and building flavor chains, Hungry Horrors remains the better fit.

How its run structure differs

Inscryption is organized around roguelike acts and includes an endlessly replayable mode called Kaycee’s Mod. Its runs focus on direct card combat, with map choices and encounters that support the larger mystery. It also mixes deckbuilding with escape-room-style discovery, so progression is not limited to improving a combat deck.

That structure rewards experimentation, but it does not reproduce Hungry Horrors’ culinary puzzle. You will not be matching five flavors, collecting ingredients for traditional dishes, or choosing cookware to solve a creature’s appetite. The transferable skill is evaluating risk, adapting a deck to the next encounter, and recognizing when a strange rule is part of the game’s wider design.

Choose Inscryption when…

  • You want the most intense horror presentation among these games.
  • You prefer direct card combat to feeding and flavor management.
  • You enjoy discovering rules through puzzles and unusual presentation.
  • You want a replayable mode after experiencing the main acts.
  • You care more about atmosphere and card experimentation than map-scale team composition.

Skip it when…

  • You are specifically looking for British or Irish folklore.
  • You prefer colorful, cozy-creepy presentation to analog-horror tension.
  • You want a two-character party with separate decks.

Roguebook: the best match for exploration and dual-deck strategy

What it is

Roguebook is a 2021 roguelike deck-building game in which you explore a book-shaped overworld, combine the decks of two characters, enhance cards, and unlock new characters and cards across playthroughs.

Why it fits Hungry Horrors players

The strongest overlap is structural rather than thematic. Both games ask you to make meaningful choices during a run while building toward a stronger overall account of the game. You plan a route, decide which opportunities are worth the risk, and shape a deck around the resources and encounters you expect to face. Persistent unlocks give later runs more possibilities instead of simply repeating the first attempt.

Roguebook also makes party composition part of deck construction. Because two characters contribute to one team, you are not only asking whether a card is powerful; you are asking how one hero’s cards support the other hero’s plan. That is a useful alternative for players who enjoyed combining ingredients, cookware, potions, and familiars in Hungry Horrors but want the interactions to happen in a combat party.

Exploration is the main attraction

The book-shaped overworld puts route planning in the foreground. You uncover and traverse an explorable map, choosing which encounters, rewards, and upgrades to pursue. This creates a different rhythm from Inscryption: Roguebook gives you more room to think about where to go, not just how to survive the next fight.

Its fantasy adventure presentation is also distinct from both alternatives. The world is illustrated and storybook-like rather than folkloric British and Irish or surreal analog horror. Choose it when the map itself is part of the fun and you want your decisions about direction, team composition, and long-term unlocks to matter as much as individual card plays.

Choose Roguebook when…

  • You want a visible overworld and frequent route decisions.
  • You enjoy building around two characters instead of one deck.
  • You value enhancements and unlocks that carry across playthroughs.
  • You prefer fantasy adventure presentation to horror.
  • You want tactical combat with more emphasis on team synergy than on a single strange premise.

Skip it when…

  • The folklore setting is the reason you are interested in Hungry Horrors.
  • You want a cooking or resource-combination system rather than combat.
  • You prefer a tightly authored horror mystery to a map-focused adventure.

Hungry Horrors vs. Inscryption vs. Roguebook

Comparison point Hungry Horrors Inscryption Roguebook
Core theme British and Irish folklore, traditional food, and legendary Horrors Surreal horror and mystery Fantasy adventure inside a book-shaped world
Primary interaction Feed creatures by matching cravings across five flavors Direct card combat combined with puzzle and adventure elements Two-hero card combat with deck enhancement
Run structure Story campaign with persistent progression and harder run modifiers Roguelike acts plus the replayable Kaycee’s Mod Runs with unlocks for characters and cards across playthroughs
Exploration Travel through folkloric regions Map choices mixed with escape-room-style discovery Explorable overworld and route planning
Presentation Colorful, cozy-creepy pixel-art sensibility Oppressive, surreal analog-horror presentation Illustrated fantasy adventure
Best reason to play A culinary deckbuilding premise that changes how encounters work Atmosphere, experimentation, and mystery Map decisions, dual-deck strategy, and persistent unlocks

This table explains why neither alternative is a one-to-one replacement. Inscryption matches the authored unease; Roguebook matches the map-and-progression framework; Hungry Horrors remains the only one of the three built around feeding folklore creatures through cooking and flavor chains.

How to choose based on what you liked

If the folklore setting mattered most

Stay with Hungry Horrors first. Its British and Irish folklore is not decorative background; it determines the creatures you meet, the dishes you prepare, and the reason flavor combinations matter. Neither Inscryption nor Roguebook offers that cultural and culinary frame. They are alternatives for adjacent interests, not replacements for the setting.

If you want a darker version of the card-run formula

Pick Inscryption. Its horror is more oppressive and surreal, and its design treats card play, puzzles, and presentation as parts of one mystery. Expect a more unsettling experience than the colorful tone of Hungry Horrors.

If you want more decisions about where to go

Pick Roguebook. Its explorable overworld makes route planning a central activity, and the two-character format adds another layer of planning to every deck choice. This is the clearest option for players who enjoy deciding which rewards and encounters to pursue during a run.

If you want progression that changes future runs

Both alternatives provide a reason to return, but in different ways. Inscryption offers replayable acts and Kaycee’s Mod, while Roguebook explicitly carries character and card unlocks across playthroughs. Hungry Horrors combines a persistent campaign with harder run modifiers, so it is the best choice when you want the story and challenge structure to grow together.

If you want cooking to remain the main puzzle

There is no substitute in this shortlist. Inscryption converts the pressure into combat and discovery; Roguebook converts it into party synergy and route planning. Choose one only if you are willing to trade the culinary premise for another kind of decision-making.

Availability and what is established about each game

Hungry Horrors

Hungry Horrors released on Steam on October 13, 2026. The Steam listing identifies demo support and single-player play, alongside the campaign, persistent progression, and harder run modifiers described above. A Steam-page snapshot in 2026 showed 98% positive from 220 all-time reviews; that is a time-specific storefront snapshot, not a universal quality score or an independent survey.

Inscryption

Inscryption originated in 2021 and is available on PC and other consoles, including Nintendo Switch. The Switch release makes it the practical choice if you want a physical-console horror deckbuilder, but edition availability and current stock can change, so check the retailer listing before buying.

Roguebook

Roguebook also originated in 2021. Its defining features for this comparison are the book-shaped overworld, two-character deck combination, card enhancement, and unlocks that persist between playthroughs. The available information does not establish a current price, discount, or platform-specific edition for every region, so treat those details as market-dependent.

A sensible play order

  1. Play Hungry Horrors first if you have not finished its campaign. Its cooking, flavor, and folklore systems are distinct enough that the other games will not spoil the central idea.
  2. Move to Inscryption when you want a darker, more experimental card game and are comfortable replacing food puzzles with direct combat and mystery.
  3. Move to Roguebook when you want a longer-term strategy project centered on map routes, two-hero synergy, and unlocks across runs.
  4. Return to Hungry Horrors with harder modifiers if you want to test the culinary system under additional constraints rather than abandoning its premise.

Bottom line

Inscryption is the best answer to “what should I play after Hungry Horrors?” when atmosphere and card experimentation come first. Roguebook is the better answer when you want an explorable map, two-deck team building, and persistent unlocks. Neither reproduces the defining pleasure of cooking for British and Irish folklore creatures, so keep playing Hungry Horrors whenever the food-and-flavor puzzle is the feature you actually want.
