Valheim is the closest overall alternative to Enshrouded if your group wants the same shared rhythm of exploring, gathering resources, crafting equipment, building a home and defeating bosses. It supports one to 10 players in a procedurally generated Viking world, whereas Enshrouded offers a handcrafted fantasy world and groups of up to 16. Choose another game when your group values a specific twist more: creature collection and automation in Palworld, castle management in V Rising, deeper construction in Conan Exiles, an approachable story in Grounded, horror in Sons of the Forest, or realm-hopping fantasy in Nightingale.

What Enshrouded does that alternatives need to match

Enshrouded is described by Keen Games as “a cooperative survival crafting action RPG.” Its core loop combines exploration, resource gathering, equipment crafting, base construction, character builds and boss progression rather than treating survival or building as a separate mode. You can shape the terrain around a homestead, construct large halls with voxel-based building, hunt, farm, fish and scavenge, then use a broad skill tree and varied equipment to prepare for skill-based combat.

The world is handcrafted and fully terraformable. That distinction matters when comparing it with games built around procedural maps: locations, routes and set-piece discoveries can feel authored in Enshrouded, while a procedural game emphasizes replayable world generation. Enshrouded can be played solo and offline or online with up to 16 players. Its Steam listing specifies Windows, 16 GB of RAM, 60 GB of storage and a broadband connection. Steam’s live metric on October 18, 2026, showed 87% positive English reviews from 50,558 reviews; that percentage can change as new reviews arrive.

Steam currently presents Enshrouded as an Early Access product. Keen Games has said Steam Early Access came first and that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S were planned after completion, so check the current platform listing before buying for a console group.

Quick comparison: which Enshrouded alternative fits your group?

Game Best fit What overlaps with Enshrouded Main trade-off
Valheim Closest all-round match Co-op survival, crafting, construction, exploration, biomes and boss progression Viking identity and a procedural world replace Enshrouded’s authored fantasy setting; one to 10 players
Palworld Creature collection and automation Co-op survival-crafting sandbox with bases and resource progression Creature and automation systems are farther from Enshrouded’s action-RPG building loop
V Rising Combat-first progression and castle management Online or LAN co-op, progression and player-owned bases A more focused vampire combat and management loop
Conan Exiles Construction depth Open-world survival, crafting and building, with single-player or co-op saves Harsher survival identity; the PC and console versions differ
Grounded Approachable, story-led co-op Authored exploration, crafting and building Playful backyard scale rather than dark-fantasy grandeur
Sons of the Forest Survival horror Exploration, construction and cooperative survival Fear, scarcity and danger dominate more than character-building breadth
Nightingale Overt fantasy exploration Realm travel, survival crafting and cooperative bases Realm structure feels less like one continuous map

No authoritative cross-game benchmark or independent test fairly ranks every option. The recommendations below are feature-fit judgments based on each game’s stated design and the way its loop compares with Enshrouded’s.

1. Valheim: the closest overall match

Why it is the default recommendation

Valheim lines up with the largest number of Enshrouded systems at once: a cooperative survival loop, resource gathering, crafting, construction, exploration across distinct biomes and bosses that gate progression. A group can divide work naturally—one player gathers, another improves the settlement, and others scout or prepare for a fight—without abandoning the shared campaign.

The differences your group will notice

Valheim uses a procedurally generated world and a Viking-inspired identity. Enshrouded instead uses a handcrafted fantasy world that can be reshaped with terraforming. The procedural structure makes a new seed feel different, but it also means landmarks and routes are not authored in the same way. Valheim supports one to 10 players, a smaller ceiling than Enshrouded’s 16. For a small party, that limit is usually irrelevant; for a large community server, it is decisive.

Who should choose it

  • Choose Valheim when your group wants the most familiar gather-build-explore-boss rhythm.
  • Choose Enshrouded when terrain sculpting, a curated fantasy map and a larger 16-player party matter more than procedural replayability.
  • Choose neither solely on review percentage: the games pursue different world structures, so a higher or lower live score does not measure your group’s preferred style.

2. Palworld: choose it for creatures and automation

Where it overlaps

Palworld is a cooperative survival-crafting sandbox with base development and resource progression. It can satisfy a group that enjoys collecting useful creatures while expanding a shared settlement and automating routine work. Those systems give the party long-term goals beyond simply finding the next weapon.

Why it is not a direct replacement

Its creature and automation focus changes the center of play. Enshrouded’s appeal is an action-RPG loop built around equipment, skills, exploration and construction in a dark-fantasy world. Palworld puts more attention on the relationship between creatures, production and the base. If your group’s favorite Enshrouded moments are sculpting a fortress, exploring authored ruins or tuning a combat build, the match is less exact than Valheim.

Best group profile

Pick Palworld when at least one player is excited by collecting and assigning creatures, and the rest are happy for the base to function as an evolving production hub. Pick Enshrouded when the party wants its characters, not its creatures, to remain the main progression engine.

3. V Rising: combat-first progression with a castle

What feels familiar

V Rising supports online or LAN co-op, character progression and player-owned bases. The shared objective is easy to understand: develop a stronger vampire, improve a castle and coordinate the next expedition or fight. Groups that enjoy planning roles and returning to a visibly upgraded home can move between the two games comfortably.

How the emphasis shifts

V Rising is a more focused vampire combat and management experience. Its identity is built around combat progression and running a castle rather than Enshrouded’s broad survival-crafting toolkit, terrain shaping and authored fantasy expedition. The narrower focus can be a strength for groups that want clearer combat objectives, but it is a poor fit if fishing, farming, terraforming and large-scale building are the reasons you stayed in Enshrouded.

When to pick it

  • Pick V Rising for a party that wants combat mastery and a strongly themed headquarters.
  • Stay with Enshrouded for a wider mix of gathering, building, survival activities and skill-tree experimentation.

4. Conan Exiles: the construction specialist

Why builders consider it

Conan Exiles offers an open-world survival game with crafting and extensive building, and it supports both single-player and cooperative saves. It is the strongest alternative here when the group’s priority is constructing and expanding a settlement rather than following a tightly authored adventure. A team can treat the base as the long-term project and let exploration supply the materials and reasons to enlarge it.

Survival pressure and platform split

Its survival identity is harsher than Enshrouded’s action-RPG presentation. Expect the basic act of staying established in the world to carry more weight in the overall experience. Platform version also matters: the developer describes the Enhanced Unreal Engine 5 update as a free update for PC Steam, while Xbox and PlayStation remain on the Unreal Engine 4 version and their official console servers. Do not assume that a PC player’s feature set, visuals or server behavior will match a console player’s.

Choose it when

Choose Conan Exiles when construction freedom and a demanding survival setting outrank a curated fantasy campaign. Choose Enshrouded when you want building integrated with a more explicit character-build, exploration and boss-progression arc.

5. Grounded: approachable, authored co-op

What makes it accessible

Grounded combines an authored world with crafting, building and cooperative exploration. Its backyard setting gives the group an immediately readable scale: ordinary objects become landmarks, and the environment supplies a clear story-led context for moving from one discovery to the next. That authored structure resembles Enshrouded more than a fully procedural game does.

The trade-off

The tone and scale are deliberately playful. A backyard adventure does not deliver Enshrouded’s dark-fantasy grandeur, ruined settlements or large halls carved into a dangerous fantasy landscape. The crafting and construction loop remains useful, but the emotional register is lighter and the threats are framed around that setting.

Best use case

Grounded is a good handoff for a mixed-experience group, especially when some players find severe survival systems intimidating. Choose it when story-led exploration and an approachable setting matter more than grim atmosphere or high-fantasy architecture.

6. Sons of the Forest: survival horror for a group that wants danger

Shared foundations

Sons of the Forest gives a co-op party exploration, construction and survival systems. The group still gathers what it needs, builds shelter and ventures farther as it learns the environment. Those foundations can appeal to Enshrouded players who enjoy preparing a base and then taking a risky expedition.

  • Valheim Boar Loves You quote. A perfect design for fans of the best selling Viking game.
  • An amazing and unique design which is also perfect as a gift.
  • Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem

Why the mood changes the game

Fear, scarcity and danger dominate the experience. In Enshrouded, combat builds, equipment choices, bosses and a broad skill tree provide much of the forward momentum. Sons of the Forest instead makes uncertainty and vulnerability central. The result is not a neutral substitute: it is a deliberate move toward survival horror.

Choose it for the right party

Pick it when everyone wants tension and is comfortable with a game that can make routine travel feel threatening. If one player wants relaxed building sessions or a systematic RPG progression path, Grounded or Valheim is likely to be a better compromise.

7. Nightingale: fantasy through connected realms

What carries over

Nightingale offers overt fantasy exploration, survival crafting and cooperative bases. It therefore speaks to the same broad desire as Enshrouded: travel through a dangerous fantasy setting, improve a shared home and make the party stronger through crafting and exploration.

Its structural difference

Nightingale is organized around realm travel. That structure is less like Enshrouded’s continuous, handcrafted map, where the settlement and surrounding routes form one persistent geographic relationship. If your group enjoys moving between distinct realms and treating each as a new stage, the difference is a feature. If you want one world to learn deeply and terraform extensively, Enshrouded remains the closer fit.

Who should pick it

Choose Nightingale when realm-based fantasy travel is the hook that keeps your group interested. Choose Valheim or Enshrouded when a single continuous world and conventional biome-to-boss progression are more important.

Valheim or Enshrouded for a group?

Choose by party size

Group situation Better starting point Reason
Two players Either; lean Valheim for the closest loop, Enshrouded for authored fantasy and terraforming Both support a small co-op party; the meaningful difference is world structure and tone rather than headcount
Three to 10 players Valheim if procedural replayability is welcome This fits Valheim’s stated one-to-10-player range while preserving its full co-op loop
11 to 16 players Enshrouded Its official description supports groups of up to 16; Valheim’s stated range ends at 10
Solo or offline Enshrouded or Valheim, based on world preference Enshrouded explicitly supports solo and offline play; both games can serve a solo builder, but their authored-versus-procedural structures differ

Choose by world structure

  • Handcrafted and terraformable: Enshrouded. The map and terrain are designed to be shaped by the player.
  • Procedurally generated: Valheim. New worlds emphasize replayability and discovery across generated landscapes.
  • Realm-based: Nightingale. Travel between realms is part of the game’s organizing idea.
  • Authored but playful: Grounded. Its backyard setting provides a story-led route through exploration.

Choose by progression

Enshrouded places equipment, a large skill tree and skill-based combat at the center of character development. Valheim is the closest alternative when the group wants bosses tied to exploration and preparation. V Rising is the better fit for combat-first progression and castle management. Palworld shifts progression toward creatures and automation, while Conan Exiles emphasizes survival and construction. Decide which of those systems your group wants to discuss between sessions; that is usually more important than a small difference in graphics or review scores.

Which game has the best building?

“Best” depends on what building freedom means to your group.

If you mean… Start with… Why
Terraforming and shaping the land itself Enshrouded The world is fully terraformable and its construction is voxel-based
A long-term settlement as the main project Conan Exiles Construction depth is its defining advantage in this group of alternatives
A home tied to bosses and biome travel Valheim Building is integrated with exploration, crafting and boss progression
A themed headquarters managed around combat V Rising The castle is part of its vampire progression and management loop
A friendly base for story-led exploration Grounded Building supports an authored, approachable backyard adventure

Do not treat these labels as a universal ranking. A builder who wants to sculpt hills will likely prefer Enshrouded, while a group that spends most of its time expanding a fortified settlement may find Conan Exiles more satisfying.

Platform, version and setup checks before you buy

Check Enshrouded’s current availability

  1. Confirm the current Steam listing and Early Access status for the Windows edition.
  2. Compare your PC with the listed 16 GB RAM and 60 GB storage requirements, and make sure broadband connectivity is available.
  3. If your group is on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, verify the live store listing rather than relying on the announced post-completion plan.
  4. Decide whether the host will run a persistent shared world or whether players will take turns hosting; agree on that before creating characters and building a permanent base.

Check alternatives by the same axes

  • Confirm the current player cap for the edition and server type you will use; Valheim’s stated one-to-10 range and Enshrouded’s official 16-player ceiling are listed above, but not a universal cap for every other game listed here.
  • Check whether your group’s platforms share the same version. Conan Exiles is the clearest warning: PC Steam receives the UE5 Enhanced update, while Xbox and PlayStation remain on UE4 and official console servers.
  • Check whether co-op means online, LAN, a shared save, or a server-backed world for the specific edition. V Rising explicitly offers online or LAN co-op; other games may organize sessions differently.
  • Review storage, memory and network requirements on the live store page before purchase, because requirements and platform support can change during development.

A practical decision framework for your next co-op game

Step 1: name the activity that keeps everyone playing

Ask each player to choose one priority: building, exploration, combat, survival tension, creatures and automation, or story. If building wins, compare Enshrouded with Conan Exiles and Valheim. If combat wins, compare Enshrouded with V Rising. If the group wants creatures, start with Palworld. If fear is the attraction, choose Sons of the Forest.

Step 2: settle the world-shape question

Choose a handcrafted map when your group values authored landmarks and a shared sense of place. Choose procedural generation when replaying new seeds is part of the appeal. Choose realm travel when the party wants distinct fantasy stages rather than one continuous territory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: set the acceptable pressure level

Enshrouded sits between a pure builder and a severe horror-survival game: it combines survival activities with RPG equipment, skills and boss fights. Conan Exiles and Sons of the Forest push harder toward survival pressure. Grounded is the gentler story-led option. Make this decision together; a single player who dislikes scarcity or horror can turn a technically good co-op choice into a failed group purchase.

Step 4: verify the practical constraints

Confirm platform, edition, player count, network model and current system requirements. A game that matches your preferred loop but splits your party across incompatible versions is not a workable recommendation.

Bottom line

Start with Valheim if you want the nearest overall replacement for Enshrouded’s co-op survival, crafting, construction, exploration and boss rhythm. Stay with Enshrouded when a handcrafted, terraformable fantasy world, a broad skill tree or a 16-player ceiling is the deciding factor. Choose Palworld for creatures and automation, V Rising for vampire combat and castle management, Conan Exiles for construction depth, Grounded for approachable story-led co-op, Sons of the Forest for horror, and Nightingale for realm-based fantasy travel.
