Valheim is the closest overall alternative to Enshrouded. It combines cooperative survival, substantial base construction, crafting, sailing, distinct biomes and boss-led progression in a procedurally generated world for 1–10 players. Choose another game only when a specific priority matters more: Palworld for creatures and automation, V Rising for combat and castle management, Conan Exiles for construction depth, Grounded for approachable story-led co-op, Sons of the Forest for survival horror, or Nightingale for overtly fantastical exploration.
Why Enshrouded is a demanding comparison target
“Games like Enshrouded” can mean several different things. Some players want the freedom to build a permanent home while they explore a large map. Others mainly want a fantasy setting, cooperative progression, action-RPG combat, or a world that can keep a group busy for dozens of sessions. The best substitute depends on which part of the loop you are trying to preserve.
The current Steam listing presents Enshrouded as an open-world survival, base-building, multiplayer, online co-op, crafting, exploration and action-RPG game. That listing shows a 15 October 2026 release date and, at the time those figures were recorded, 50,341 English reviews with 87% positive. Storefront labels, review totals and percentages change, so check the live listing when you buy.
For a useful comparison, judge every candidate on five axes:
#1 Best Overall
- Building depth: Is construction a central creative activity, a practical shelter system, or a way to manage a fortified base?
- Exploration structure: Is the world procedurally generated, authored around a story, or divided into realms or regions?
- Combat and progression: Does advancement come mainly from bosses, equipment, quests, character powers or survival technology?
- Co-op scale and persistence: How many people can play together, and how well does a shared world support repeated sessions?
- Tone: Does the game feel like high fantasy, dark survival, horror, comedy or a story-focused adventure?
Quick comparison
| Game | Best match for | World and exploration | Building emphasis | Co-op information in the official material | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Valheim | Closest all-round Enshrouded alternative | Procedurally generated Viking-inspired afterlife with biomes, sailing and regional bosses | From small shelters to villages and mountain fortresses | 1–10 players | Its Norse survival identity is stronger than Enshrouded’s fantasy-RPG presentation |
| Palworld | Creature collecting, mounts, farming and automation | Open-world survival setting built around discovering and using creatures | Supports a base loop alongside creature work and automation | Online co-op for up to 4; dedicated servers for up to 32 | Building shares attention with creature management and production systems |
| V Rising | Combat-first progression and castle ownership | Open world with blood-hunting targets and environmental danger from sunlight | Castle construction and management are central | Online and LAN co-op are supported; a player cap is not stated in the supplied official material | Its action and vampire-management loop is more focused than Enshrouded’s broad sandbox |
| Conan Exiles | Construction depth as the deciding factor | Open-world survival exploration | Base building is a primary attraction | Current cap and cross-play details should be checked on the live listing | Its harsher survival identity may not suit players seeking a lighter fantasy adventure |
| Grounded | Approachable, story-led co-op | An authored backyard world rather than a conventional fantasy continent | Crafting and building support the adventure | Current cap and platform support should be verified before purchase | Its smaller, playful setting is very different from Enshrouded’s dark fantasy scale |
| Sons of the Forest | Exploration and construction under horror pressure | Survival-horror wilderness exploration | Building is a way to create safety and support survival | Current cap and cross-play details should be verified | Fear, scarcity and danger dominate more than relaxed creative building |
| Nightingale | Fantastical survival crafting and co-op bases | Exploration across a more overtly fantastical, realm-oriented setting | Base construction supports travel and survival | Current cap and platform support should be verified | Its realm-based fantasy structure is less directly comparable to one continuous Enshrouded map |
Valheim: the closest overall match
Why it overlaps so well
The official description calls Valheim “a collaborative exploration and survival game for 1-10 players, set in a procedurally generated afterlife inspired by Viking culture.” That sentence captures the strongest overlap with Enshrouded: a group can explore, gather resources, craft equipment, establish a home and move into increasingly dangerous regions together.
Construction is not merely a place to store items. The official page describes building “a small shelter, an entire village or a mountain-side fortress,” while also presenting bases as places of reprieve from the dangers ahead. That range makes Valheim suitable for both practical groups that want a defensible staging point and builders who treat the settlement as a long-term creative project.
How its progression feels
Valheim ties exploration to distinct biomes and regional bosses. Reaching a new area is therefore more than a change of scenery: it introduces a new survival problem, new materials and a new progression goal. Sailing adds a travel and logistics layer that Enshrouded players may enjoy if they want the journey between bases and regions to matter.
Who should choose it
- Choose Valheim if you want the broadest combination of exploration, crafting, construction and cooperative progression.
- Choose it if a procedurally generated world matters more than a tightly authored story route.
- Choose it if your group enjoys setting its own building goals, from a functional shelter to an elaborate settlement.
Valheim is not a one-to-one replacement for every Enshrouded feature. Its Norse-afterlife setting and survival presentation define the experience, so players seeking a specifically dark-fantasy action-RPG atmosphere may prefer one of the more specialized alternatives below.
Palworld: choose creatures and automation over a pure building focus
What changes from the Enshrouded formula
Palworld shifts the center of gravity toward creature collecting, mounts, farming and automation. Building remains part of the survival loop, but your base is also a place where captured creatures and production systems contribute to daily progress. This makes it a strong choice for a group that enjoys assigning jobs, improving output and using creatures to change how it travels through the world.
Co-op scale
The official page states that online co-op supports up to four players. It also states that a dedicated server can allow up to 32 players together. Those are different use cases: a four-person online session suits a regular friend group, while a dedicated server is relevant to a larger community that can organize access and administration.

- USE YOUR POWERS OF PRECOGNITION TO SAVE HUMANITY: In a post-apocalyptic world the Ymunes, mutants with the power of precognition, decide to save what remains of humanity. To save the Humans you take in while working your way downstream, you will need Food, Doctors to treat them and Protectors to fight the Banes you’ll encounter.
- UNIQUE DUAL SELECT DRAFTING SYSTEM: Each turn a player will receive 2 cards from another player and 2 from their deck. They must keep 1 of the 2 cards they received from the player and return the other. Then of the 3 cards they have they select 1 to play and pass the 2 remaining cards to the next player to consider for their turn.
- STRATEGY BOARD GAME: Cards will be used to power machines that will generate resources and maintain the humans you have on board. Balancing between gathering resources, gaining humans, and preparing for negative events is vital.
- HIGHLY ENGAGING AND VARIABLE: Precognition offers a tight interplay between resource management and drafting where players can use their knowledge of cards in play to help build towards future turns. The unique drafting system allows players to track what cards are in play and help them build to either avoid negative cards or build synergies with other cards in the future.
- NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This thrilling post-apocalyptic survival game is designed for 2 to 4 players and is suitable for ages 10 and older. Average playtime is approximately 50 minutes.
Best fit and trade-off
Pick Palworld when collecting and caring for creatures is as important to you as constructing a home. If your group wants every major activity to reinforce architectural creativity and fantasy exploration, Valheim or Conan Exiles is a closer fit. If you enjoy a base that behaves like a working operation, Palworld offers the more distinctive alternative.
V Rising: a darker combat-and-castle alternative
The core loop
V Rising’s official description begins: “Awaken as a Vampire. Hunt for blood in nearby settlements to regain your strength and evade the scorching sun to survive.” It then frames the objective as raising a castle and thriving in an ever-changing open world full of mystery. That premise makes combat, target selection and environmental timing more prominent than in a general-purpose building sandbox.
Why builders may still like it
Castle construction gives your group a strong shared project, while blood hunting supplies a reason to leave the walls and seek stronger targets. The contrast between a carefully managed stronghold and dangerous excursions creates a clear session rhythm: prepare, hunt, return and expand.
Who should skip it
V Rising is a poor fit if what you want is a relaxed, low-pressure construction game in which exploration can continue at your own pace. Sunlight management and the vampire premise make survival conditions part of the identity. It is better for players who want their co-op building game to be organized around action and character power.

Why it belongs on this list
Conan Exiles is an open-world survival game whose main draw is construction depth. If your question is “what is like Enshrouded but gives building the highest priority?”, this is the candidate to investigate first. Its appeal comes from treating the base as a major creative and strategic undertaking rather than a temporary camp.
How to decide
- Choose it when designing, expanding and defending a large settlement is the activity your group will repeat most often.
- Choose it when you are comfortable with a tougher survival identity and do not need a strongly authored fantasy adventure.
- Look elsewhere when your priority is a lighter, story-led co-op campaign or a creature-collection system.
Because player caps, platforms and cross-play policies can change, check the current edition and server information before committing to a long-term group world.
Rank #3
- Cooperative strategy experience where players guide a herd of elephants across a perilous savanna
- Work together to reach key landmarks while avoiding roaming lions
- Innovative card orientation puzzle forces communication and shared planning every turn
- Dynamic map creation ensures each journey feels different with no fixed board
- Includes scalable difficulty, solo play, and campaign mode for long-term replayability
Grounded: approachable story-led co-op in an unusual world
What makes it different
Grounded places its co-op adventure in a backyard and combines crafting and building with a lighter, story-led presentation. The setting itself changes the meaning of exploration: familiar household spaces become oversized regions, and the group’s progress is tied to discovering what happened and how to survive the environment.
When it is the better recommendation
Recommend Grounded to friends who are curious about survival crafting but do not want an unstructured fantasy sandbox. Its authored adventure gives a group clearer reasons to move forward, while construction still provides a shared home and practical preparation.
Recommended Free Tools
It is not the right substitute for players who specifically want a vast dark-fantasy world, boss-region progression or a settlement that can grow into a mountain fortress. The appeal is approachability and story context, not scale parity with Enshrouded.
Sons of the Forest: building while survival horror pushes back
Why horror changes the building loop
Sons of the Forest combines exploration and building with survival-horror pressure. A shelter is not only an expression of creativity; it is part of how the group manages danger, uncertainty and limited safety. That gives construction a stronger defensive purpose than it has in a relaxed builder.
Choose it if your group wants
- Exploration where the next discovery can be unsettling rather than merely rewarding.
- A base that feels necessary because the surrounding wilderness is threatening.
- Co-op sessions in which tension and resource decisions matter as much as decoration.
Choose another game if your group wants to spend long sessions designing elaborate structures without constant survival-horror pressure. Sons of the Forest is the specialist pick for atmosphere and danger, not the safest all-purpose Enshrouded replacement.

Nightingale: overt fantasy and realm-oriented exploration
What it preserves
Nightingale is the strongest option here for players who want survival crafting and co-op bases in a setting that is openly fantastical. It keeps the expedition-and-home relationship: travel into strange environments, gather what is needed, and improve a base that supports future journeys.
Rank #4
- Semi Coop game where many can win, but killing the alien may endanger crew members as well.
- Death comes quickly in this game and ten minutes later, you are all jumping back in to play again
- Simple rules make for a perfect party game. Play two cards and see who's dead.
Why its structure matters
Its realm-oriented approach makes exploration feel more segmented and fantastical than a single conventional open-world map. That can be a benefit if your group enjoys variety between expeditions and wants the setting itself to feel imaginative. It can be a drawback if you are specifically seeking one continuous, organically discovered landmass.
Choose Nightingale when atmosphere and fantastical survival crafting outrank a strict match for Enshrouded’s progression structure. Verify the current co-op, platform and persistence details for the edition you intend to use.

| Your priority | Best starting point | Reason | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closest overall loop | Valheim | It combines co-op exploration, procedural survival, crafting, substantial building and boss-led regional progression. | A stronger Norse-survival identity than Enshrouded. |
| “Something like Valheim, but with more creature systems” | Palworld | Creatures, mounts, farming and automation are central alongside base construction. | Building is one part of a broader production-and-collection loop. |
| Action combat and a personal stronghold | V Rising | Blood hunting, sunlight management and castle construction create a focused co-op rhythm. | Less of a relaxed, general-purpose sandbox. |
| Maximum construction emphasis | Conan Exiles | Its open-world survival format makes base building the principal attraction. | A harsher survival tone and less emphasis on an authored fantasy adventure. |
| Friendly, story-guided group adventure | Grounded | The backyard setting and lighter story make it approachable for mixed-experience groups. | A smaller and more playful setting than Enshrouded’s dark fantasy world. |
| Fear and defensive survival | Sons of the Forest | Exploration and construction are constantly shaped by horror pressure. | Less room for unhurried creative building. |
| Fantastical survival-crafting expeditions | Nightingale | Co-op bases and exploration are framed by a more overtly fantastical, realm-oriented setting. | A less direct match for one continuous open-world structure. |
How to check co-op fit before you buy
Player-count marketing does not tell you everything about a shared world. Use this checklist with your group before purchasing:
- Count the regular players. A four-person group can use Palworld’s standard online co-op, while a larger community may need its dedicated-server option. Valheim’s official description covers 1–10 players. For the other games, confirm the current cap from the live store page or server documentation.
- Decide whether the world needs to persist. Ask who will host, whether the host must be online, and whether dedicated-server support is available for the edition you are considering. Do not assume that “multiplayer” means the same persistence model in every game.
- Check platform and cross-play support together. A game can support co-op while still limiting which hardware can join the same world. Platform policies and cross-play availability change, so verify them immediately before purchase.
- Agree on the desired tone. Valheim and Nightingale suit fantasy expeditions; V Rising is darker and combat-led; Grounded is lighter and story-focused; Sons of the Forest is explicitly survival horror. A mechanical match is not enough if the group wants a different atmosphere.
- Choose the progression style. Procedural exploration, boss-gated regions, authored story objectives and realm-based expeditions produce very different sessions. Decide whether your group wants a shared campaign or a sandbox that supplies its own goals.
- Confirm the current price and edition. Digital prices, bundles, early-access status and included content vary by region and date. Treat any old price or platform list as provisional.
Building, exploration and progression: the practical differences
If building is your main hobby
Start with Conan Exiles when construction depth is non-negotiable. Start with Valheim when you want substantial building integrated with exploration and boss progression. Choose V Rising when the structure is specifically a castle that supports a combat-focused character. Palworld is better when the base should also function as a creature, farming and automation hub.
If exploration should create the story
Valheim’s procedural world and biome progression encourage your group to make its own narrative through travel, settlement and boss preparation. Grounded offers a more authored route through a distinctive backyard. Sons of the Forest makes discovery tense and threatening. Nightingale emphasizes fantastical realm-to-realm expeditions. These are not interchangeable kinds of openness, even though all support exploration.
If progression must work for a mixed-skill group
Grounded’s story-led structure can give new players clearer objectives. Valheim suits groups that are happy to establish their own priorities and divide work between gathering, construction and expeditions. V Rising favors players who enjoy learning combat and managing a focused character build. Palworld suits groups that like assigning different friends to exploration, creature work and base production.
A simple decision path
Use this sequence if your group is undecided:
- If you want the nearest overall match, choose Valheim.
- If collecting creatures and automating a base are equally important as exploration, choose Palworld.
- If your ideal session is hunting targets, avoiding sunlight and improving a castle, choose V Rising.
- If designing and expanding a settlement is the deciding feature, investigate Conan Exiles.
- If you want a lighter, guided adventure that is easy to explain to new survival players, choose Grounded.
- If the group wants fear, danger and defensive construction, choose Sons of the Forest.
- If a more overtly fantastical, realm-oriented survival-crafting journey sounds best, choose Nightingale.
Bottom line
Valheim is the safest recommendation for most Enshrouded players because it overlaps across every major axis: cooperative exploration, meaningful construction, crafting, regional progression and a world designed to be lived in rather than merely crossed. The alternatives are better treated as targeted choices. Palworld adds creatures and automation, V Rising concentrates on vampire combat and castles, Conan Exiles prioritizes construction, Grounded delivers an approachable story, Sons of the Forest supplies horror pressure, and Nightingale leans into fantastical realm-based survival. Check live player caps, platform support, cross-play, prices and server requirements before starting a long-term group world.
