Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 are the closest games to Drova in structure. They share the crucial loop of starting powerless, earning training, committing to a faction and advancing through chapters while quests change the world around you. Choose Outward instead if the part you loved most was dangerous, preparation-heavy exploration. Choose ELEX or Risen for that same faction-driven lineage in a fully 3D setting.
This guide treats “Drova II: Torn Lands” as a reference to Drova – Forsaken Kin, the pixel-art action RPG released on October 15, 2024. Steam’s current listing records 4,868 English reviews and 93% positive sentiment as of October 18, 2026. The recommendations below separate close structural matches from games that share only the combat, atmosphere or exploration.
What makes Drova difficult to replace?
Drova – Forsaken Kin presents a handcrafted open world inspired by grim dark fantasy and Celtic mythology. You begin as an insignificant survivor, learn how the setting works through play rather than constant explanation, and become entangled in a society divided over control of spirits that govern nature. Factions, training and choices are not decorative systems: they determine what opportunities remain available and how the world reacts.

A game may have pixel art but no faction commitment, or difficult combat but no consequence-heavy quest structure. The shortlist below evaluates five separate qualities:
#1 Best Overall
- 192-page full color hardcover packed with tools and guidance to help gamemasters run immersive campaigns.
- Includes expert advice for new and experienced GMs tailored to the Warhammer The Old World roleplaying system.
- Features campaign-building tools like Grim Portents, Contacts, and Dark Threads to create dynamic narratives.
- Expanded setting details for Talagaad with guidance for adapting adventures to other regions and stories.
- Contains bestiary, magic items, downtime events, and corruption paths to enrich gameplay and surprise players.
- Progression: whether a weak character gains status through teachers, choices and staged story advancement.
- Faction identity: whether joining one group changes quests, skills or access rather than merely changing dialogue.
- World discovery: whether exploration reveals routes and rules instead of placing every objective on a checklist.
- Combat pressure: whether preparation and learning matter more than numerical level alone.
- Atmosphere: whether the setting sustains a dark, strange or morally uncertain tone.
A Eurogamer quote displayed on Drova’s Steam page describes the pleasure as “Gradually discovering how this realm works,” while a displayed Try Hard quote calls it a game in which you “struggle to survive, thrive, and find more to live for.” Those two ideas—discovery and earned survival—are the standard used here.
Best games like Drova at a glance
| Game | Closest overlap | Main difference | Best choice for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gothic 1 | Faction lock-in, trainers, compact world and chapter progression | Older presentation and interface | The closest overall structural match |
| Gothic 2 | The same earned-status progression with a broader continuation | Still an older 3D RPG rather than pixel art | Players who want more of Gothic’s formula |
| Outward | Underpowered travel, preparation and punishing exploration | Looser faction and chapter structure; survival systems are more prominent | Exploration and survival pressure |
| ELEX | Faction politics, training and reactive quests | Fully 3D, larger-feeling and rougher in places | Drova’s social progression in a 3D world |
| Risen | Piranha Bytes-style factions, training and consequence-heavy quests | Older 3D presentation and different setting | A compact 3D alternative with Gothic lineage |
| Dread Delusion | Indie dark fantasy, exploration and unusual world design | Less of Drova’s faction-led framework and a different presentation | Surreal discovery and atmosphere |
| Death Trash | Dark, systems-driven RPG design and harsh tone | More CRPG-oriented, grotesque and visually distinct | Stranger, more experimental role-playing |
1. Gothic 1 and Gothic 2: the closest overall match
Why Gothic matches Drova’s progression
Gothic is the strongest recommendation because it matches the structure underneath Drova’s pixel-art presentation. You start weak, gain competence through trainers and skill investment, choose between major factions, and move through a chapter-based story. A Steam comparison of Drova specifically highlights trainers who teach in exchange for points, two major exclusive factions and chapter progression—features associated with Gothic’s identity rather than generic action-RPG conventions.
The important similarity is social as much as mechanical. Training is earned, faction membership has a cost, and progression changes how the world treats you. Quests are not simply a queue of interchangeable activities: your decisions can close or open paths. The compact world also rewards learning geography, shortcuts and safe approaches, producing the same sense that knowledge is a form of power.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Gothic 1 or Gothic 2?
Start with Gothic 1 if you want the purest version of the formula: a tightly bounded world, stark faction choice and a pronounced zero-to-hero arc. Its age is visible in the interface and presentation, but those rough edges are attached to the exact progression model Drova echoes.
Choose Gothic 2 if you want to continue with a broader version of that design after understanding the original. It retains the trainer-led growth, faction identity and chapter structure while giving you another long-form setting to master. Playing both is the best route for readers asking, “What feels like Gothic but newer?”—with the qualification that neither is new, and neither uses Drova’s pixel-art format.
Who should choose Gothic?
- Choose it when faction commitment and trainer-based advancement matter more than modern controls.
- Choose it when you want quests whose consequences are part of the progression rather than an end-of-game score.
- Skip it as your first alternative if you mainly want co-op, highly technical combat or a forgiving introduction.
2. Outward: the best match for survival and exploration
What it shares with Drova
Outward is the right answer when your favorite Drova moments involved leaving safety underprepared, learning a dangerous route and returning stronger because you understood the world better. Community comparisons place both games in a Gothic-like role-playing tradition, but Outward puts more weight on combat preparation and survival friction.
Rank #2
- ADORABLE & ACCESSIBLE RPG: Dungeons & Kittens is a charming tabletop roleplaying game where brave kittens and powerful meowgic explore a whimsical fantasy world filled with adventure and discovery.
- COMPLETE CORE RULEBOOK: This 288-page hardcover includes everything needed to play—core rules, world lore, character creation, magic systems, and guidance for both new and experienced players.
- CREATE YOUR OWN KITTEN HERO: Features a simple, fun character creation system that builds each kitten’s abilities and personality from their quirky childhood background and experiences.
- MASTER THE ART OF MEOWGIC: Learn intuitive spellcasting rules and expert advice that make magic easy to understand, creative to use, and delightful at the table.
- READY-TO-PLAY CONTENT INCLUDED: Comes with pre-generated characters and four complete adventures, perfectly designed to help storytellers and players jump straight into their first epic tales.
Travel is an activity you plan rather than a transition between quest markers. The threat of an expedition gives food, equipment, route choice and timing practical importance. You are often underpowered, so success comes from reading encounters, preparing for conditions and deciding when to retreat. That creates the same earned-security feeling as Drova, even though the surrounding narrative structure is less tightly chapter-led.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhere Outward diverges
Outward is a looser structural match than Gothic or Drova. Its survival systems and travel demands occupy more attention, while faction progression and story chapters do not define every stage in the same way. The game also supports co-op, which changes the rhythm of danger and preparation if you play with another person.
That difference is useful rather than a flaw. If you want every journey to feel like a logistical decision, Outward may serve you better than a closer narrative imitation. If you want a compact faction drama in which joining a group is the central turning point, Gothic remains the better choice.
Who should choose Outward?
- Choose it for survival pressure, difficult travel and exploration that resists hand-holding.
- Choose it if co-op availability is important.
- Do not choose it expecting Drova’s exact 2D faction-and-chapter structure.
3. ELEX and Risen: Drova’s lineage in 3D
Why these games belong on the list
ELEX and Risen are useful bridges between Drova and the broader Piranha Bytes tradition associated with Gothic. Steam community recommendations repeatedly group them with Gothic and Drova because they emphasize faction identity, training, quest reactivity and worlds that expect you to learn their rules.
They answer a specific question: “Is there a 3D game with Drova’s social progression?” In both cases, the appeal is not pixel art. It is the feeling that your character’s place in the world must be earned, that factions represent different ways of living, and that quests become more meaningful when your allegiance limits some options while opening others.
ELEX
ELEX is the pick for readers who want a larger-feeling 3D world and are comfortable with a rougher interface or uneven presentation. Its faction politics and progression make it a natural follow-up for someone who enjoyed deciding which group deserved loyalty in Drova. The scale and vertical exploration change the experience: you are navigating a more expansive space rather than a compact pixel-art map.

- ANIMAL FANTASY ROLEPLAYING GAME: Enter a post-apocalyptic medieval world where cats, dogs, and other animals wield "meowgic" and ancient tech to survive and thrive.
- COMPLETE RPG STARTER SET: Includes everything you need to start your adventure—rulebook, adventure guide, character sheets, dice, and more, all beginner-friendly.
- PLAY AS ADVENTUROUS KITTENS: Explore a whimsical world through the eyes of brave, magical kittens with unique personalities, abilities, and heroic destinies.
- FAMILY-FRIENDLY STORYTELLING: Perfect for kids, teens, and adults, Dungeons and Kittens offers wholesome fun, creativity, and cooperation in a safe, enchanting fantasy setting.
- PERFECT INTRO TO TABLETOP RPGs: Easy-to-learn rules and step-by-step instructions make this an ideal gateway into the world of tabletop roleplaying games, especially for animal lovers.
Choose ELEX when world reactivity and faction identity outrank polish. The transition is easiest if you accept that early vulnerability and awkward encounters are part of the intended climb rather than evidence that you chose the wrong build.
Risen
Risen is a strong alternative when you want a more compact 3D experience with the same broad lineage. It emphasizes faction choice, training and consequences without trying to reproduce Drova’s mythology or visual language. Its age shows, but that is also why it works for readers seeking the design philosophy behind Drova rather than a modern graphical equivalent.
Choose Risen if you prefer a focused world and a clear faction decision. Choose ELEX if you want a broader setting and are willing to tolerate more interface and presentation roughness.

ELEX or Risen?
| Priority | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Broader world and more vertical exploration | ELEX | Its 3D scale makes discovery and movement a larger part of the experience. |
| More compact, focused 3D progression | Risen | It keeps the faction-and-training lineage in a tighter setting. |
| Pixel-art presentation | Neither | Both are fully 3D; Drova remains the distinct choice for pixel art. |
4. Dread Delusion: indie dark-fantasy exploration
Dread Delusion is one of the strongest alternatives when atmosphere and discovery matter more than reproducing Drova’s exact faction framework. A Steam-tag similarity index gives it an 81% match to Drova, with Dark Fantasy and Souls-like overlap among the shared tags. That is meaningful evidence of a similar audience, but it is not a claim that the two games play identically.
The attraction is its unusual indie world: exploration density, surreal design and narrative ambiguity take priority. You investigate a setting whose rules and history are not delivered as a constant tutorial. That makes it a good companion for the part of Drova captured by “gradually discovering how this realm works.”
The trade-off is structural. Dread Delusion does not reproduce Drova’s specific combination of faction-led advancement, trainer progression and chapter organization. Combat complexity and presentation also differ. Select it when you want an eccentric dark-fantasy journey and can accept a looser match on social progression.
5. Death Trash: a harsher CRPG edge
Death Trash also appears as an 81% Steam-tag match to Drova, with CRPG and Souls-like overlap. It is aimed at readers who want the darker, stranger and more systems-driven edge of the concept rather than a direct Gothic-style recreation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its value as a recommendation comes from build experimentation, a harsher tone and a willingness to make the world grotesque. The game belongs in a different visual and tonal lane, so it should not be sold as “Drova in another skin.” Instead, think of it as a choice for players who enjoyed Drova’s refusal to make the world comfortable and want more overtly unconventional role-playing systems.
Choose Death Trash if you are comfortable with grotesque content, CRPG-style decision making and a combat tempo that does not mirror Drova’s action-RPG feel. If your priority is faction lock-in and trainer-led growth, move back up the list to Gothic.

Dark Souls, ELDEN RING and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen are credible recommendations only when you define “like Drova” narrowly. A Steam similarity list places them among related games, but they do not reproduce Drova’s complete 2D faction-and-trainer structure.
Dark Souls
Dark Souls matches methodical combat, oppressive atmosphere and the satisfaction of learning hostile spaces. It is a good choice if the key memory you want to recreate is surviving encounters that initially seem impossible. It is not the choice for faction-led quest progression or a compact, trainer-centered zero-to-hero story.
ELDEN RING
ELDEN RING matches dark-fantasy mood and exploratory freedom on a much larger scale. Its open-ended discovery can appeal to Drova players who dislike constant hand-holding, but its structure, scale and combat emphasis are substantially different. Pick it for atmosphere and exploration, not as a one-to-one replacement.
Best Value
- Live another life, in another world: Play any type of character you can imagine, and do whatever you want; the freedom of choice, storytelling, and adventure of the elder scrolls comes to life in one legendary experience from all three official add-ons.
- Dawnguard: The Vampire Lord Harkon has returned to power. By using the elder scrolls, he seeks to do the unthinkable - to end the sun itself. Will you join the ancient order of the Dawnguard and stop him Or will you become a Vampire Lord
- Hearthfire: Purchase land and build your own home from the ground up - from a simple one-room cottage to a sprawling compound complete with an armory, alchemy laboratory, and more
- Dragonborn: Journey off the coast of Morrowind, to the vast island of Solstheim. Traverse the ash wastes and glacial valleys of this new land as you become more powerful with shouts that bend the will of your enemies and even tame dragons
- Steam account and Internet connection required to activate the game
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is the best of these three for action-RPG character building and adventurous exploration. It offers a different kind of party and combat experience, so it fits readers who want active fighting and build development more than faction politics or chapter consequences.
| Game | What carries over from Drova | What does not |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Souls | Methodical combat and dark atmosphere | Drova’s faction-and-trainer progression |
| ELDEN RING | Dark fantasy and open-ended discovery | Drova’s compact 2D structure and social progression |
| Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen | Action-RPG exploration and character building | Drova’s faction-led world reactivity |
Choose your next game by the part of Drova you miss
If you want factions, trainers and zero-to-hero progression
Start with Gothic 1, then Gothic 2. They are the closest matches because all three priorities reinforce one another: teachers provide a visible path upward, faction commitment gives choices weight, and chapter progression makes advancement feel earned. Risen is the next option if you want a 3D alternative in a tighter setting; ELEX follows if you prefer greater scale.
If you want dangerous expeditions
Choose Outward. Its survival pressure makes preparation part of the adventure rather than a menu between quests. Expect a looser narrative structure and embrace the possibility that retreat is a successful decision.
If you want discovery without constant explanation
Choose Dread Delusion for surreal indie exploration, or ELDEN RING for a much larger dark-fantasy world. Dread Delusion is closer in indie strangeness; ELDEN RING is closer in broad freedom and combat challenge.
If you want harsher systems and stranger tone
Choose Death Trash. Its CRPG emphasis and grotesque atmosphere make it a deliberate departure from Drova’s presentation, but a useful fit for players who want morally uncomfortable, systems-driven role-playing.
If you mainly want combat
Choose Dark Souls for deliberate encounter learning, ELDEN RING for open-ended dark-fantasy combat and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen for action-RPG exploration and character building. Treat these as selective matches, not replacements for Drova’s faction structure.
How to set expectations before you switch
- Identify your favorite system. Write down whether it was faction choice, trainer progression, exploration, survival preparation, combat or atmosphere. The best alternative depends on that answer.
- Decide how much age you can tolerate. Gothic, Risen and ELEX deliberately preserve older interface and presentation conventions. Their structural similarity is stronger than their modern convenience.
- Separate world scale from world density. ELEX and ELDEN RING offer broader 3D spaces, while Drova, Gothic and Risen deliver more compact environments where learning routes and relationships has greater concentration.
- Check whether survival friction is welcome. Outward makes preparation and risk central. If you want to focus on faction quests without extensive travel logistics, choose Gothic instead.
- Use atmosphere as a tie-breaker. Dread Delusion favors surreal discovery, Death Trash favors grotesque experimentation, and the Souls games favor oppressive combat-focused dark fantasy.
No single game duplicates every element. Gothic is the closest structural answer; Outward is the strongest exploration-and-survival answer; ELEX and Risen translate the lineage into 3D; Dread Delusion and Death Trash cover the indie dark-fantasy edge; and Dark Souls, ELDEN RING and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen cover selected combat or mood preferences.
