Hades is the best first choice for most Dead Cells fans. It matches the rapid dodge-and-strike combat, run-based structure, build decisions and permanent progress between deaths, although it uses a top-down view instead of side-scrolling platforming. Choose Hollow Knight if handcrafted exploration matters more than randomized runs, Rogue Legacy 2 for classes and inheritance, or The Rogue Prince of Persia for acrobatic movement and traversal.
Dead Cells is difficult to replace because it combines several systems that are usually separated: fast 2D combat, changing layouts, metroidvania-style ability progression, meaningful builds and a death-and-retry loop. The recommendations below are organized around the part of that formula you want to preserve.
What makes Dead Cells distinctive?
Motion Twin describes Dead Cells as a "rogue-lite, Castlevania-inspired action-platformer" set in a sprawling, ever-changing castle. Its combat is described as 2D "souls-lite" action with the threat of permadeath. Steam’s tags add roguelite, metroidvania-inspired action-platformer, procedural generation, replay value, platforming, hack-and-slash and souls-like elements.
That combination creates six useful comparison points:

- Fast, responsive movement: dodges, jumps and attacks need to respond immediately.
- Immediate combat: close-range weapons and quick reactions matter more than slow turn-based planning.
- Changing or replayable environments: layouts, rooms or encounters vary enough to make another run worthwhile.
- Run builds: weapons, abilities, upgrades or modifiers change how a particular attempt plays.
- Permanent progression: some unlocks survive death, giving failed runs lasting value.
- A death-and-retry loop: dying sends you back into another attempt rather than ending the game permanently.
Few games reproduce all six. Hades is structurally closest, while Hollow Knight is closer to Dead Cells’ exploration and ability-gated map design. The right alternative depends on which part of the formula keeps you playing.
Quick guide: which Dead Cells alternative fits you?
| Game | Best for | View and structure | What carries over | Main difference from Dead Cells |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hades | Closest overall match | Top-down action roguelike with repeated runs | Permanent upgrades and story content | No side-scrolling platforming |
| Hollow Knight | Exploration and discovery | Handcrafted interconnected metroidvania | Exploration progress and abilities | Randomized runs are not the main structure |
| Rogue Legacy 2 | Classes, traits and inheritance | 2D platforming roguelite | Generational upgrades and unlocks | Comedic tone and character inheritance define the build |
| The Rogue Prince of Persia | Movement and traversal | Side-scrolling roguelike with acrobatics and traps | Roguelike progression | Movement flow is the primary attraction |
| Skul: The Hero Slayer | Changing playable identities | 2D action roguelite | Run upgrades | Swapping skulls changes the moveset |
| Have a Nice Death | Lighter workplace satire | Side-scrolling action roguelite | Run progression | Office-comedy setting |
| Blasphemous | Grim atmosphere and weighty combat | Exploration-focused 2D metroidvania | World and ability progress | Slower, heavier attacks and less emphasis on repeated randomized runs |
| Enter the Gungeon | Ranged bullet-hell combat | Top-down room-based roguelite | Unlocks and run knowledge | Firearms and projectile dodging replace side-scrolling melee |
Platform support and release status can change, especially for newer games. Check the current store listing for your system before buying; the evidence available for this guide does not establish a complete, permanent platform matrix.
1. Hades: the closest overall structure
Start with Hades if what you miss most is the feeling that every attempt teaches you something and leaves you stronger. It uses fast dodge-and-strike melee combat, sends you back to the beginning after death, and awards permanent upgrades and additional content between attempts. Build choices made during a run alter your attacks and encourage experimentation, giving each escape attempt a distinct shape.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The key trade-off is viewpoint. Hades is a top-down action roguelike, not a side-scrolling platformer. You are reading enemy patterns and arena geometry from above rather than timing jumps through a horizontal castle. Movement is still immediate, and dodging is central, but platforming and metroidvania backtracking are not its focus.
Choose Hades when
- You want the strongest combination of fast combat, build variety and permanent progression.
- You enjoy starting a new run immediately after a death.
- You are comfortable exchanging side-scrolling movement for a top-down battlefield.
Look elsewhere when
Choose Hollow Knight or Blasphemous if discovering a connected map is more important than randomized runs. Choose Rogue Legacy 2 if you specifically want a platforming game where each attempt is tied to a new generation and class.

2. Hollow Knight: best for handcrafted exploration
Hollow Knight is the best Dead Cells alternative for players who value a world they can learn, map and revisit. Its interconnected environment is handcrafted rather than assembled into a new run layout each time. Discoveries, shortcuts and ability-gated routes make backtracking meaningful, and platforming remains central.
Its combat is deliberate rather than as relentlessly quick as Dead Cells. You learn enemy rhythms, position carefully and treat each new area as part of a larger journey instead of a disposable stage. Death matters, but the primary structure is metroidvania exploration, not a sequence of self-contained randomized attempts.

Choose Hollow Knight when
- You want secrets, map knowledge and a coherent world more than procedural variety.
- You prefer exploration progress to reset less dramatically between attempts.
- You enjoy deliberate combat alongside platforming and discovery.
Know the trade-off
Hollow Knight does not reproduce Dead Cells’ one-more-run rhythm. It is the exploration match, not the closest roguelite match.
3. Rogue Legacy 2: best for inheritance and permanent upgrades
Rogue Legacy 2 keeps 2D platforming and makes the family line itself part of the build system. Each run features a new heir, class choices and trait modifiers, while permanent upgrades improve future generations. The result is a roguelite where failure changes who you play rather than simply discarding the previous character.
Classes provide broad changes to how a run feels, and traits add variation that can alter your priorities. The inheritance structure gives every death a clear purpose: invest in the estate, select a different class or accept a strange trait and see how far that combination goes. Its comedic tone also separates it from Dead Cells’ darker presentation.

Choose Rogue Legacy 2 when
- You want permanent progress to be the central reward for repeated attempts.
- You like testing many classes instead of relying on one fixed protagonist.
- You want 2D platforming with a lighter, more playful tone.
4. The Rogue Prince of Persia: best for movement and traversal
The Rogue Prince of Persia is the movement-first recommendation. Its design emphasizes fast traversal, acrobatic combat and trap-filled environments within a roguelike framework. Route flow, wall movement and momentum are as important to the experience as selecting weapons or upgrades.
This makes it a strong choice for Dead Cells players who remember the satisfaction of moving through a level cleanly: chaining jumps, reacting to hazards and keeping forward momentum. The appeal is less about copying Dead Cells’ exact arsenal and more about making traversal itself a source of mastery.
Choose it when
- You judge an action-platformer by how smoothly you can move through danger.
- Wall movement, traps and acrobatics sound as appealing as build experimentation.
- You want a side-scrolling roguelike rather than a top-down substitute.
Because release states and platform availability for newer titles can change, verify the current listing for your device before purchase.
5. Skul: The Hero Slayer: best for swapping character identities
Skul makes the playable character itself a build component. During a run, swapping skulls changes your moveset and class-like capabilities, so choosing which identity to carry is as important as choosing a weapon in another roguelite. The 2D action structure remains familiar to Dead Cells players, but the experimentation centers on transformation.
This system suits players who want dramatic changes in attack patterns from one attempt to the next. Instead of gradually tuning one hero, you can change the hero’s role mid-run and build around the new skull’s strengths. It is a targeted recommendation rather than a universal replacement: the appeal depends on whether character swapping sounds more interesting than Dead Cells’ equipment combinations.

6. Have a Nice Death: best for a lighter office-satire setting
Have a Nice Death appears in current Dead Cells-alternative lists as another 2D action roguelite. Its side-scrolling runs and quick combat make it a natural fit for readers who want the broad format but prefer a workplace-comedy setting.
Choose it when tone is part of the decision. The office premise and lighter presentation provide a different emotional register from Dead Cells’ grim castle. It is best approached as a fast side-scrolling roguelite with its own identity, not as a one-for-one mechanical clone.
7. Blasphemous: best for grim, weighty combat
Blasphemous is aimed at players who want a darker visual and thematic direction and attacks that feel heavier and more deliberate. It is frequently grouped with exploration-focused metroidvania alternatives, so expect a world and progression structure that reward learning the environment rather than simply rushing through disposable rooms.
The trade-off is speed. Blasphemous is more oppressive and measured than Dead Cells, with weightier combat and a stronger emphasis on atmosphere. That makes it a poor choice if your priority is constant rapid movement, but an excellent one if you want punishment, bleak presentation and exploration to carry more of the experience.
Choose Blasphemous when
- You want grim art direction and a heavier mood.
- You prefer deliberate attacks and defensive timing to nonstop speed.
- You want a metroidvania-style world alongside challenging combat.
8. Enter the Gungeon: best for ranged bullet-hell action
Enter the Gungeon preserves the run-based structure while replacing side-scrolling melee with top-down rooms, firearms and bullet-hell dodging. The challenge comes from reading projectile patterns, clearing rooms and using a large range of guns rather than mastering a sword-and-roll rhythm.
Best Value
- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
It is the right recommendation when you want the restart-and-improve loop but not necessarily the platforming. The perspective changes substantially, so movement is about weaving through bullets in open arenas instead of jumping across platforms. Players who enjoy ranged builds and dense projectile patterns may find it more compelling than a closer side-scrolling imitation.

How to choose without buying the wrong kind of game
- Decide whether you need randomized runs. If starting over with a new layout is essential, prioritize Hades, Rogue Legacy 2, The Rogue Prince of Persia, Skul, Have a Nice Death, Enter the Gungeon or the other roguelite options. If discovering a persistent world matters more, start with Hollow Knight, Blasphemous or The Lost Crown.
- Choose your viewpoint. Hades and Enter the Gungeon are top-down. The others listed as 2D action-platformers or metroidvanias use a side-on perspective. This changes how dodging, spacing and movement feel even when both games are fast.
- Identify your preferred source of variety. Hades changes builds, Rogue Legacy 2 changes heirs and classes, Skul changes skulls, and Enter the Gungeon changes firearms and projectile situations. Hollow Knight creates variety through exploration and discovery instead of procedural loadouts.
- Set your tolerance for punishment. Dead Cells’ appeal includes the pressure of losing a run. Blasphemous and Nine Sols push toward deliberate precision, while Hades softens repeated failure with persistent upgrades and continuing content.
- Check current platform and release information. Availability is not fixed across every game or storefront, and newer recommendations can change status. Confirm the listing for your hardware before purchasing.
Bottom line
Buy Hades first if you want the closest overall substitute for Dead Cells’ fast combat, build decisions and death-to-new-run rhythm. Pick Hollow Knight for the strongest exploration and metroidvania match, Rogue Legacy 2 for inheritance and classes, and The Rogue Prince of Persia for movement mastery. Skul, Have a Nice Death, Blasphemous, Enter the Gungeon and the additional choices are better when you have a specific preference—character swapping, comedy, grim weight, ranged bullet hell, parries or traversal—rather than a need for an all-purpose replacement.
