Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is the closest game you can play now to DarkSwarm’s top-down alien combat, class-based teamwork and tactical co-op—and it is free. Risk of Rain 2 is the better choice if your priority is extreme movement speed, escalating hordes and repeatable build-focused runs, although its camera and mission structure are very different.

DarkSwarm itself is still unreleased. Steam lists it as an upcoming game with no announced release date, so the recommendations below focus on the parts of its current description that players can experience immediately: twin-stick-style aiming, alien swarms, operator roles, cooperative objectives and pressure that forces a squad to keep moving.

What DarkSwarm promises, and what a substitute needs to match

DarkSwarm is described by Bitfire Games and Ghost Ship Publishing as a top-down tactical co-op shooter for one to four players. Its premise is a squad entering alien-overrun colonies, recovering data and resources, completing objectives and reaching extraction. Steam’s listing identifies solo play, online co-op, procedurally generated levels, four classes and Xbox-controller support. The official game description names the roles Assault, Engineer, Support and Infiltrator.

That combination matters because “games like DarkSwarm” can mean several different things. A game may have a top-down camera but no class teamwork, or it may have frantic hordes but no extraction objective. The useful comparisons are therefore based on separate traits rather than a single similarity score.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Camera and aiming: DarkSwarm is presented as a top-down shooter built around directional aiming and movement. Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop follows that format; Risk of Rain 2 uses a third-person camera.
  • Squad structure: DarkSwarm has four named operator roles and supports one to four players. Reactive Drop is class-based and supports larger tactical groups. Risk of Rain 2 uses survivors and item combinations instead of a four-role operator team.
  • Mission shape: DarkSwarm centers on deployments, objectives and extraction. Reactive Drop offers campaigns and challenge missions. Risk of Rain 2 is organized around runs through randomized stages that can end at a final boss or continue indefinitely.
  • Pressure: DarkSwarm emphasizes fast, adaptive enemies and alien-overrun locations. Reactive Drop focuses on tactical alien swarms. Risk of Rain 2 continually scales player and enemy power during a run.
  • Replayability: Procedural deployments are one of DarkSwarm’s stated hooks. Reactive Drop adds Workshop content and extra campaigns, while Risk of Rain 2 randomizes stages, enemies and items.

No currently available recommendation reproduces every one of those elements. The right pick depends on whether the camera, the aliens, the class roles, the extraction loop or the high-speed run structure is the part you most want to preserve.

At a glance: the two strongest alternatives

Game Camera Players Core structure Why it fits Main difference
DarkSwarm Top-down tactical shooter 1–4 Procedural deployments, objectives, recovery and extraction Four roles, alien colonies, adaptive enemies and controller support Not released; Steam lists the date as to be announced
Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop Top-down shooter Up to 8-player tactical co-op Campaigns, challenge modes, PvP and community content Free, alien-focused, class-based and tactical Older volunteer-maintained game; extraction is not its defining presentation
Risk of Rain 2 Third-person Solo or up to 3 friends online Randomized stages and repeatable runs Very fast combat, hordes, item builds and escalating difficulty No top-down view or four-operator extraction structure

Player counts are the formats stated on the respective store descriptions. Prices, downloadable-content availability and platform support can change by region and date, so verify those details before buying. Reactive Drop is listed as free and released on 20 April 2017. DarkSwarm’s release status remains upcoming.

1. Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is the closest structural match

If your question is “What is most like DarkSwarm right now?”, start here. Reactive Drop preserves the combination that is hardest to find together: a top-down view, directional shooting, alien enemies, tactical co-op and class-based team roles. Steam tags it as Twin Stick Shooter, PvE, Co-op, Top-Down Shooter, Class-Based, Aliens, Hacking and Tactical.

Why it matches DarkSwarm

The perspective and combat language are the closest match in this shortlist. You manage movement and aim from an overhead view while coordinating a squad against alien swarms. The class-based structure gives each player a job instead of reducing the team to four interchangeable damage dealers. That makes communication, positioning and the choice of who handles a particular task central to a mission.

Reactive Drop is also a practical answer for players who want to try the format without waiting for DarkSwarm. It is listed as free, so there is no purchase decision before you can find out whether top-down squad shooting suits you. Its support for up to eight players is larger than DarkSwarm’s stated four-player limit, which can be useful for an established group but changes the feel of coordination. A compact DarkSwarm-sized squad and an eight-player Reactive Drop lobby should not be treated as equivalent experiences.

What you can do in Reactive Drop

  • Play tactical co-op missions against alien enemies.
  • Use class-based team composition rather than a single universal character.
  • Play with improved single-player bots when human teammates are unavailable.
  • Use additional weapons and extra campaigns.
  • Try challenge modes, player-versus-player content and Workshop-supported community material.

The Workshop and extra campaigns are particularly important for replay value. They give the game more ways to extend beyond its original mission set, although community content can vary in scope and maintenance. The game is older and volunteer-maintained, so it should be approached as a durable free platform rather than as a newly launched service with a guaranteed development roadmap.

Where the match stops

Reactive Drop should not be sold as DarkSwarm before DarkSwarm exists. The recommendation is structural, not a claim that the games have identical missions. DarkSwarm’s stated identity is built around entering procedurally generated colonies, recovering data and resources, adapting to aggressive enemies and making extraction. Reactive Drop’s store description instead emphasizes campaigns, challenge modes, PvP, bots, weapons and Workshop support. Its mission presentation does not reproduce DarkSwarm’s extraction-first premise exactly.

Who should choose it

Choose Reactive Drop when your priorities, in order, are free access, top-down aiming, alien swarms and cooperative classes. It is also the best fit for a group that wants tactical PvE without limiting itself to four players. Choose something else if the essential feature is an extraction contract with procedurally generated deployments, because that is part of DarkSwarm’s announced design rather than a confirmed Reactive Drop equivalent.

2. Risk of Rain 2 is the best alternative for speed and repeatable runs

Risk of Rain 2 is a looser match, but it is the strongest recommendation for players who mainly want fast movement, dense enemy pressure and a run that changes every time. It is third-person rather than top-down, so it does not reproduce DarkSwarm’s twin-stick presentation. Its value is in the pace and replay loop.

Why its combat appeals to DarkSwarm players

Its stages, enemies and items are randomized, and Steam describes more than 110 items and eleven survivors. Those combinations make each run a series of tactical decisions rather than a fixed campaign route. You are constantly weighing movement, positioning and the build you are assembling while the threat level rises. That escalating pressure fits the appetite for aggressive enemies and rapid repositioning that DarkSwarm’s description suggests.

Runs can end at a final boss or continue indefinitely. Player and enemy power scale during a run, so staying alive is not simply a matter of clearing one room at a time; the longer a run continues, the more important the relationship between route, timing and build becomes. This is a different kind of tension from reaching an extraction point, but it delivers the same broad desire for a high-pressure session in which the situation can deteriorate quickly.

What changes compared with DarkSwarm

  • Viewpoint: The third-person camera changes how you read space and aim. It is not a top-down twin-stick substitute.
  • Characters: Risk of Rain 2 has eleven survivors rather than four named operator roles of Assault, Engineer, Support and Infiltrator.
  • Progression: Survivor and item combinations replace class-based extraction loadouts.
  • Group size: The listed format is solo or online co-op with up to three friends, which is a four-player maximum but is described differently from DarkSwarm’s one-to-four-player squad.
  • Mission shape: You move through randomized stages and decide whether to finish at the final boss or continue, rather than carrying out a stated data-and-resource recovery extraction contract.

Who should choose it

Pick Risk of Rain 2 when speed, build experimentation and run-to-run variety matter more than camera angle or alien-specific fiction. It is the better partial match for someone who says “I want frantic hordes and a run that never feels identical.” It is not the right answer if top-down aiming and class-defined squad jobs are non-negotiable.

Which game fits your exact preference?

Choose Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop if you want the closest playable format

Select it when the essential checklist is top-down shooting, aliens, tactical co-op, class-based roles and no purchase price. Its eight-player ceiling is useful for larger groups, and bots, extra weapons, campaigns and Workshop content give solo or returning players more options. Accept that its age and volunteer-maintained status are part of the package.

Choose Risk of Rain 2 if you want the fastest long-term loop

Select it when you care most about movement, escalating hordes, randomized stages and item-driven builds. It supports solo play and groups of up to three friends. Accept the third-person camera and the fact that its survivors and items do not map directly to DarkSwarm’s four operator roles.

Wait for DarkSwarm if extraction is the deciding feature

If your must-have list is procedural colony deployments, recovering data and resources, adaptive alien enemies and reaching extraction with a four-person team, neither current alternative confirms that complete combination. DarkSwarm is still listed as upcoming with no release date, so there is no confirmed launch timing, price, playtest access or broader platform schedule to plan around. Recheck the Steam listing and official announcements before treating any date or feature as final.

How the mission structures change the way you play

DarkSwarm: deployment, objective and extraction pressure

DarkSwarm’s announced loop has a clear outward shape: a squad enters an alien-overrun colony, recovers specified information or resources and reaches extraction. Procedural levels mean the route and immediate problems are intended to vary. The four roles imply that the squad must divide responsibility, while fast and adaptive enemies are designed to punish a static approach. The most important decision is therefore not only how to defeat enemies, but when to advance, regroup and leave.

Reactive Drop: mission and campaign structure

Reactive Drop presents its replay value through campaigns, challenge modes, additional weapons, PvP and Workshop material. The tactical question is how your class-based team handles the current mission and how effectively it uses the available tools. Because the game includes bots, it remains accessible when a full human squad is unavailable.

Risk of Rain 2: run length and scaling danger

Risk of Rain 2 asks you to manage a run rather than complete a single extraction contract. Randomized stages, enemies and items make route and build choices meaningful, while scaling player and enemy power changes the cost of staying longer. Continuing indefinitely is itself a decision: more time can produce a stronger build, but it also exposes the team to a harsher encounter curve.

Controller and aiming considerations

DarkSwarm’s Steam listing explicitly supports Xbox controllers. That makes an Xbox-compatible controller an optional way to handle twin-stick aiming on PC; it is not a stated requirement for the game. Check the current controller model, operating-system support and local availability before purchase, because accessory compatibility and stock change independently of the game listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the alternatives, choose your input around the game you are actually playing. A controller can be attractive when continuous movement and directional aiming are your priority, while keyboard and mouse may feel preferable for menu navigation or precise cursor control. Do not infer that DarkSwarm’s controller support guarantees identical input behavior in every alternative; the camera and control demands of a third-person game differ from those of a top-down shooter.

Co-op planning: squad size is not just a number

DarkSwarm is described for one to four players, so its role design is built around a compact squad. A four-role concept can encourage each player to cover a distinct responsibility, but the available description does not establish whether every mission requires all four roles or how solo mode fills missing positions. Those details should be confirmed when the game’s final documentation is available.

Reactive Drop supports up to eight players and offers improved single-player bots. That makes it more flexible for a large group or an individual who wants tactical missions without waiting for a lobby. It can also create a busier battlefield than a four-person DarkSwarm deployment, so a larger player count should be treated as a different coordination problem, not automatically as a better version.

Risk of Rain 2 supports solo play or online co-op with up to three friends. Its four-player maximum lines up numerically with DarkSwarm’s stated limit, but survivors and item builds mean the team is not organized around the same named roles. A group that enjoys experimenting with combinations may prefer that freedom; a group that wants explicit support, engineering or assault responsibilities may find it less direct.

Important limits before you choose

  • DarkSwarm’s schedule is unsettled: Steam currently lists the release date as to be announced. Do not base a purchase, upgrade or event plan on an assumed launch window.
  • Feature descriptions can change: Four classes, procedural levels, extraction objectives, solo play and controller support are part of the current descriptions, not a guarantee that every implementation detail is final.
  • Reactive Drop is not a new release: Its 20 April 2017 release date and volunteer-maintained status explain why its presentation and update expectations differ from an upcoming commercial title.
  • Risk of Rain 2 is not top-down: Its speed and replayability are the reason to choose it, not a matching camera or mission model.
  • Prices and platforms move: Verify the current regional price, downloadable-content terms and supported platforms on the relevant store page at the time you buy.
  • Review counts are not a durable quality measure: Store totals change, and the available descriptions do not establish a comparative performance or player-satisfaction ranking.

Bottom line: start with Reactive Drop, then decide what you are missing

For the closest immediately playable substitute, install Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop. It is free, top-down, alien-focused, class-based and tactical, with co-op for up to eight players plus bots and community content. Its main compromise is that it is an older volunteer-maintained game and does not reproduce DarkSwarm’s announced extraction-first structure.

Choose Risk of Rain 2 instead when the defining appeal is speed, escalating hordes and repeatable randomized builds. Its third-person camera, survivor roster and run-based progression make it a deliberate change rather than a direct replacement.

Keep DarkSwarm on your watch list if the combination of four operator roles, procedural deployments, alien colonies and extraction objectives is the part you cannot compromise on. It remains unreleased, with no date currently stated on Steam.
