If you want a game like Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, start with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night for the closest mix of 2D exploration, weapon variety, and supernatural action; choose Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the genre’s classic castle-exploration formula; or try Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown if acrobatic movement and route-finding matter most. These are preference-based matches, not a definitive ranking: official information about Belmont’s Curse describes its own features, not a verified head-to-head comparison with every alternative.

The key to choosing is to decide which part of the new game appeals to you. Is it the promise of searching a sprawling castle, using a whip to swing into hidden areas, changing combat approaches with different weapons and abilities, or exploring a gothic version of 15th-century Paris? Each recommendation below matches a different part of that mix.

What makes a game feel like Belmont’s Curse?

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a 2D action-exploration game set in Paris in 1499. Rose Belmont, Trevor Belmont’s daughter, uses the Vampire Killer whip both to fight and to swing through areas, reach otherwise inaccessible places, and uncover hidden rooms. Konami also describes weapons, spells, secrets, puzzles, and traps. The official PlayStation listing adds seven weapon categories, Relics, and Arcana: tarot cards containing defeated bosses that grant spells and special actions.

That combination matters because it is more specific than “a game with a map and monsters.” Exploration is not only about moving from one fight to the next: the whip is also a route-finding tool. Combat, in turn, is not presented as a single-weapon affair. Along with the whip, the announced weapon categories, Relics, spells, and Arcana suggest several ways to shape encounters. The exact behavior of each item and ability is not established by the announced feature list, so it is sensible to treat those as customization options without assuming details about their effects.

#1 Best Overall
Castlevania Anniversary Collection - Limited Run #405 - PlayStation 4
  • Classics that defined the Castlevania series.
  • Includes the "History of Castlevania - Book of the Crescent Moon" ebook.
  • This includes eight classic Castlevania games preserved on one disc with a full-color manual.
  • The Castlevania Anniversary Collection on physical disc for the PlayStation 4. Also works on PlayStation 5. Region-free.

The setting adds another layer. The Paris of 1499 gives the adventure a historical place and period, while the series’ supernatural premise supplies its gothic atmosphere. If you want another game like it, consider whether setting is essential or whether you are mainly looking for connected exploration, 2D combat, or movement tools that open new paths.

Those details point to several different kinds of “similar.” A game might share a sprawling map without matching the combat, or deliver excellent action-platforming without much equipment customization. The picks below are grouped by the overlap that matters most, rather than presented as a universal best-to-worst list.

  • Exploration: You revisit connected areas, find hidden routes, or unlock places that were out of reach.
  • Action: Fighting and platforming are central, whether the pace is measured or fast.
  • Traversal: Movement abilities help you navigate as well as fight, or give you new ways to approach a route.
  • Build variety: Weapons, spells, or other abilities let you change how encounters play.
  • Atmosphere: Gothic settings and supernatural threats may matter as much as the map and combat.

Konami’s February 12, 2026 announcement and the official PlayStation listing establish those features for Belmont’s Curse. Tommy Williams, Konami’s head of communications for the Americas, told PC Gamer that players can freely explore its maps and that it is “not a roguelike or roguelite game.” That distinction is useful when choosing an alternative: a game can have action and discovery but still feel quite different if each run resets or its levels are generated around repeated runs. If you want the same kind of continuous exploration Williams described, prioritize a game built around searching a broad environment rather than repeating short runs.

Best close matches for exploration and combat

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night — for weapon and ability variety

Try Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night if you want the broadest overlap in the combination of side-scrolling exploration, supernatural enemies, and equipment choices. Its castle-and-monster setting makes it a natural choice for players drawn to the gothic side of Belmont’s Curse, while its weapon and ability options make experimenting with combat part of the appeal.

The match is not exact: Belmont’s Curse puts Rose’s whip at the center of both combat and traversal, whereas Bloodstained is a different protagonist’s adventure with its own equipment and progression systems. Choose it for a substantial action-exploration game with room to vary your approach, not because its movement or story is a direct continuation of Rose’s.

This is the pick to make if your main question is, “Can I explore a supernatural setting while also changing how I fight?” It is less suitable if the feature you most want is specifically a weapon that doubles as a grappling or swinging tool. That distinction keeps the recommendation useful: similar atmosphere and equipment-driven action do not automatically mean identical traversal.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night — for castle exploration and series lineage

Symphony of the Night is the clearest choice if you want to explore a large, interconnected Castlevania castle. It established a durable template for searching rooms, uncovering routes, gaining abilities, and returning to parts of the castle that were inaccessible before. Its gothic setting and supernatural combat also make it an obvious tonal fit.

It is an older game, and its rhythm and presentation reflect its era. It does not reproduce the specific promise of Rose using a whip as a swinging traversal tool, nor does it have the same announced seven-category weapon and Arcana setup. Pick it for the castle, exploration loop, and series history; look elsewhere if your priority is a newer-feeling action platformer or traversal built around a whip.

For a player who has never tried the classic formula, its main appeal is the idea of making a castle feel like a place to investigate rather than a simple sequence of stages. That is the closest conceptual overlap with Belmont’s Curse’s promise that searching the castle rewards curiosity. It is not a substitute for every new feature in Rose’s adventure, but it is a natural choice when map discovery and Castlevania lineage outrank novelty.

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse | Night One Edition - Nintendo Switch
  • Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse | Night One Edition includes: Main Game, Alucard Style Costume, Digital Sound & Art Gallery, Trevor Style Costume, Sypha Style Costume, and Family's Grace (Relic).
  • Medieval Paris, Where the Tolling Bells Herald the End - 1499: Paris is engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures suddenly emerge from the shadows. Armed with the legendary holy whip, the Vampire Killer, Trevor Belmont’s successor ventures into the burning streets and the looming castle to hunt down the beasts. Can they save the city from the brink of destruction?
  • Satisfying Whip Action - The iconic whip of the series is now more important than ever! Crack your whip to move around freely like a trapeze artist! Master the whip mechanics and be creative to pounce on your prey like a wolf in fast-paced combats!
  • A Large Selection of Weapons and Abilities - The whip is not the only tool at your disposal. You will need to strategically plan your next move in combat and make full use of all the weapons and abilities to stand a chance!
  • Environment Hazards That Will make you grit your teeth - Biomes are packed with secrets, traps and puzzles. It is not just about muscles, it's about brains too!

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow — for compact exploration and changing combat options

Aria of Sorrow offers another 2D Castlevania route through a connected, hostile environment, with exploration and combat closely tied together. Its distinctive ability-collection system gives players reasons to try different approaches as they progress. That makes it a good fit if the idea of finding new powers and adjusting your fighting style appeals more than matching the exact equipment systems in Belmont’s Curse.

It is a handheld-era game, so its scale and presentation are not the same as a newly released console game. Consider it for a focused, classic exploration-and-action experience rather than as a preview of how Rose’s movement or map design will work.

Between this and Symphony of the Night, the choice comes down to what you want from a classic. Choose Symphony if the castle itself and the series’ historical template are the draw; choose Aria if you are more interested in a compact adventure whose collectible powers give combat an evolving feel. Neither should be treated as confirmation of how Belmont’s Curse’s seven weapon categories or Arcana will work.

Best if movement and route-finding matter most

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown — for agile traversal

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a strong option if you are most interested in making movement part of exploration. Its 2D action-platforming emphasizes acrobatic traversal, combat, and finding routes through a large environment. It is a better fit for players who want to move quickly and treat navigation as a skill than for those looking primarily for a classic gothic castle.

Its atmosphere and combat identity differ from Castlevania’s, and its movement is not built around a Belmont whip. Choose it for fluid platforming and exploration that rewards learning how to navigate, not for a close match in setting or weapon design.

The connection to Belmont’s Curse is about the role of movement, not a claim that the two games handle traversal in the same way. Konami specifically says Rose can use her whip to swing across areas and reach places she could not access before. If that use of movement is what caught your attention, The Lost Crown is a useful alternative to try for a more acrobatic take on route-finding.

Hollow Knight — for secrets, interconnected areas, and a dark mood

Hollow Knight suits players who want a moody world to investigate, with connected areas, concealed paths, and new abilities that help open routes. Its action is precise and its atmosphere is somber, making it a compelling alternative if discovery and a distinctive dark-fantasy setting matter more than a roster of weapons.

It is not a direct match for Belmont’s Curse’s weapon variety or whip-based movement. The appeal is the exploration loop and the way the world’s layout encourages curiosity. Choose it if you are happy with a different visual style and a more focused combat toolkit.

That makes it a strong fit for a particular kind of player: someone who would rather wonder what lies beyond the next passage than compare a large set of weapons. Belmont’s Curse appears to combine curiosity with multiple combat options, but the announced details do not establish how often players will switch among them. Choose Hollow Knight for its exploration and mood, not as a promise of the same equipment breadth.

Best for gothic action and a heavier combat feel

Blasphemous 2 — for grim religious fantasy and deliberate fights

Blasphemous 2 is worth considering if the dark, macabre side of Castlevania is what draws you in. It combines 2D action with exploration in a grotesque religious-fantasy setting, and its combat has a more deliberate feel than a movement-first platformer. It is a fit for players who want a bleak world and weightier encounters.

Its tone is harsher and its setting is not a vampire-haunted Paris. It also does not share Rose’s whip-centered traversal premise. Choose it for atmosphere and combat weight, not as a one-to-one mechanical substitute.

It is also the clearest contrast in pace among these recommendations. If you want the sense of danger and dark fantasy but prefer deliberate fights over agile movement, this may be a more satisfying detour than a game selected only for map similarities. If your priority is reaching hidden areas with an expressive movement tool, look instead to The Lost Crown or another traversal-led pick.

Guacamelee! 2 — for lively action-platforming

Guacamelee! 2 is a better match if you want brisk platforming and energetic combat rather than gothic atmosphere. Its colorful presentation and emphasis on action give it a lighter feel, but it still offers an exploration-led 2D adventure with movement and combat closely linked.

It is a tonal departure from Castlevania, and its appeal is speed and playfulness rather than haunted architecture. Pick it when you want a more upbeat action-platformer and are less concerned with dark-fantasy mood.

In other words, it is a useful recommendation for the “action” half of the title’s promise, not for every aspect of the new Castlevania. If a grim setting is essential, it is easy to rule out. If you want a lively change of pace while keeping exploration and platforming in the mix, the difference in tone may be exactly the point.

Quick comparison: which kind of match do you want?

Game Strongest overlap What differs from Belmont’s Curse Choose it if
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night 2D exploration, supernatural action, equipment variety Different movement and progression systems; not Rose’s story You want the broadest overall action-exploration resemblance
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Gothic castle exploration and series lineage Older presentation; not the new game’s whip-traversal premise You want the classic interconnected-castle experience
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow 2D exploration and changing combat abilities Handheld-era scale and presentation You want a focused classic with collectible powers
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Agile 2D traversal, action, route-finding Different setting, weapon identity, and atmosphere Movement is your top priority
Hollow Knight Interconnected exploration, secrets, dark mood Different combat toolkit and visual world You care most about discovery and atmosphere
Blasphemous 2 Dark-fantasy action and deliberate combat Different setting and no Belmont-style whip traversal You want a grim tone and weightier fights
Guacamelee! 2 Action-platforming and exploration Much brighter, more playful tone You want fast, energetic action instead of gothic mood

The table is a preference guide, not a scorecard. The closest choice depends on which feature you want to prioritize: equipment variety points toward Bloodstained, series history toward Symphony of the Night, and traversal toward The Lost Crown. Atmosphere can point in different directions, too: Hollow Knight is somber, Blasphemous 2 is grim, and Guacamelee! 2 deliberately offers a brighter counterpoint.

Which one should you play while waiting for Belmont’s Curse?

  1. For the closest overall formula: Start with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. It brings together exploration, supernatural action, and equipment choice.
  2. For Castlevania’s castle-exploration roots: Choose Symphony of the Night. It is the most direct way to revisit the series’ classic exploration style.
  3. For movement-led action: Choose Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Its appeal is traversal and platforming rather than gothic similarity.
  4. For exploration and mood over weapon breadth: Choose Hollow Knight. Its interconnected world and atmosphere are the main draw.
  5. For a grimmer or lighter change of tone: Choose Blasphemous 2 for macabre intensity or Guacamelee! 2 for lively action.

If you are undecided, start by asking what you want to feel while playing. Want to search a castle and follow a long exploration loop? Try Symphony of the Night. Want combat options to be a major attraction? Try Bloodstained. Want navigation and movement to be the test? Try The Lost Crown. Prefer a world that rewards curiosity and a dark atmosphere? Try Hollow Knight. This is a more useful filter than choosing a game simply because it gets labeled a Metroidvania.

Konami says demo save transfer requires the same platform and account, retaining the save, and updating the full game. In practice, keep the demo save on the platform and account where you intend to play the full version, and check the game’s update state when the release becomes available. The transfer is not described as cross-platform: the same-platform requirement means a demo save on one system should not be assumed to move to another.

Physical editions, including a Midnight Edition, were announced for preorder. Konami lists alternate Rose costumes, a digital sound and art gallery, and an in-game relic among the Midnight Edition contents. Current retailer, region, platform, and stock availability can vary, so check the listing for the edition and system you actually want. No price or retailer-level availability is established here. The Nintendo listing also specifies Switch 2 compatibility, with behavior consistent with Switch; that is a compatibility note, not a separate Switch 2 edition announcement.

If you are choosing between playing an alternative now and trying the demo, the demo is the direct way to assess Rose’s own movement and combat. The other games can help you decide which broad qualities you enjoy, but none should be treated as a preview of the exact whip controls, weapon categories, or Arcana system. The announced details make those features sound central; playing the demo is the way to judge their feel for yourself.
