Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the closest overall match for Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse: it combines gothic atmosphere, side-scrolling exploration, combat, equipment variety, and RPG-style character building. Choose Hollow Knight if precise slash-and-dash combat and a huge interconnected map matter most. Choose Ori and the Will of the Wisps if agile movement, platforming, puzzles, and emotional storytelling are your priority.

Those recommendations reflect what Belmont’s Curse establishes as its core loop: 2D action, ability-gated exploration, fast combat, boss rewards, and a dark fantasy setting. The sections below explain exactly where each recommendation matches, where it diverges, and which game fits your preferred way to play.

What defines the Belmont’s Curse experience?

Konami describes Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse as a 2D action-exploration game set in 1499 Paris, 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Trevor Belmont enters a burning Paris with his daughter Rose, who becomes involved in a conspiracy beneath the castle. The publisher lists the release date as 15 October 2026.

Rose’s adventure is built around more than simply moving from one room to the next. The game’s documented systems establish a particular blend of classic Castlevania combat and modern Metroidvania progression:

  • Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
  • Whip-based traversal and fast combat: the whip is both a weapon and a movement tool, so positioning and momentum matter.
  • Boss-driven progression: encounters include Death, Medusa, Carmilla, and Joan of Arc.
  • Arcana rewards: defeated bosses become tarot-card Arcana that grant spells and special actions.
  • Seven weapon categories: Rose can change her battle style rather than relying on one attack pattern.
  • Relics: equipment affects offense and defense, adding a build-customization layer.
  • Classic-inspired maps: the environments draw on familiar Castlevania exploration while supporting ability-based route finding.

That combination is the standard used in this guide. A game does not need vampires or a whip to qualify; it needs to reproduce the parts that make Belmont’s Curse appealing: readable 2D combat, meaningful exploration, gated abilities, discoverable upgrades, and a strong atmosphere.

Quick comparison

Game Combat feel Traversal and map structure Progression systems Tone Best match for
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Side-scrolling action with a broad equipment and ability set Exploration-focused world with Metroidvania-style route unlocking Weapons, equipment, and RPG progression Gothic dark fantasy The closest overall structural successor
Hollow Knight Deliberate slash, dodge, and dash combat requiring precise timing Vast interconnected world with ability-gated paths and mapping tools Abilities, charms, map tools, enemy discoveries, and boss progression Melancholic insect fantasy Precision combat and world exploration
Ori and the Will of the Wisps Platforming-led action built around movement and mobility Large world with challenging traversal and puzzle routes Movement abilities and upgrades supporting exploration Luminous, emotional fantasy Fluid movement, puzzles, and story

All three games have official PC listings, while console editions and physical inventory vary by region and should be checked for the hardware you use. The comparison is about documented design overlap, not a claim that any title plays identically to Belmont’s Curse.

1. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night — the closest structural match

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the first game to try if you want Belmont’s Curse’s full package rather than only one of its ingredients. Its official Steam description calls it an exploration-focused side-scroller action RPG and tags it Metroidvania, gothic, dark fantasy, exploration, action, and RPG. Those labels line up directly with Rose’s castle routes, combat encounters, equipment choices, and supernatural setting.

Why it matches Belmont’s Curse

  • Exploration is central: the game is organized around discovering an interconnected environment and opening routes as your capabilities expand.
  • Combat and character building coexist: you are not limited to a single fixed weapon pattern; the action-RPG structure supports experimentation with equipment and abilities.
  • The atmosphere is familiar: gothic and dark-fantasy presentation makes the transition from a cursed castle to another supernatural stronghold feel natural.
  • Return visits have a purpose: new abilities and equipment give you reasons to revisit previously seen areas instead of treating the map as a one-way sequence.

Where the match is not exact

Bloodstained is an action RPG, so its progression has a broader equipment-and-build emphasis than a narrowly focused whip adventure. The games should be treated as relatives, not duplicates: Belmont’s Curse is specifically built around Rose’s whip mechanics, Arcana earned from bosses, seven weapon categories, and relic effects. Bloodstained supplies a comparable exploration-and-customization loop, but it does not establish that same Rose-specific system.

Choose Bloodstained if…

  • You want the nearest combination of gothic presentation, side-scrolling exploration, combat, and RPG progression.
  • You enjoy comparing equipment choices and adjusting a build as new areas open.
  • You prefer a game that treats the map and character growth as equally important.

2. Hollow Knight — the precision-combat and interconnected-world choice

The official Steam listing describes Hollow Knight as a classically styled 2D action adventure set across a vast interconnected world. Its documented features include tightly tuned controls, dodge, dash, and slash combat, ability growth, charms, extensive mapping tools, more than 130 enemies, and 30 bosses. For players who remember Belmont’s Curse primarily as a demanding action game with secrets behind locked routes, Hollow Knight is the strongest alternative.

Why its combat appeals to Castlevania players

Hollow Knight makes spacing and timing the center of every encounter. The basic slash is direct, while dodges and dashes let you evade attacks and reposition. That creates a more deliberate rhythm than a rapid chain of weapon swaps: success comes from learning an enemy’s pattern, choosing a safe opening, and moving cleanly through the arena.

The result is a combat system that rewards control rather than button volume. If you like the idea of studying a boss, recognizing its tells, and improving through repeated attempts, Hollow Knight provides that challenge without relying on a gothic castle aesthetic.

Why its world supports repeated exploration

The game’s map is explicitly vast and interconnected. New abilities open routes that were previously unreachable, and mapping tools help turn a confusing first visit into a navigable network of shortcuts and discoveries. That structure matches Belmont’s Curse’s ability-gated exploration at the level of player behavior: explore, find a barrier, gain a capability, and return with a new route available.

Progression through charms and abilities

Hollow Knight’s charms let you adjust how your character behaves, while ability growth changes which parts of the world you can reach. This is analogous to Belmont’s Curse’s Arcana, weapons, and relics because both games ask you to connect exploration rewards with a preferred combat style. The systems are not interchangeable, however. Charms and movement abilities produce a distinct build-and-traversal language rather than reproducing Rose’s tarot-card spells or seven weapon categories.

The important trade-off

Hollow Knight’s setting is an insect kingdom with a melancholic fantasy identity, not a vampire-gothic Paris. Its tone is quieter and more mournful, and its visual language is deliberately different. Choose it for combat precision, map scale, and boss variety; do not choose it expecting the same supernatural-horror presentation.

3. Ori and the Will of the Wisps — the movement, puzzle, and story choice

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is listed as a Metroidvania that combines a vast world, challenging puzzles, tightly crafted platforming action, and emotional storytelling. It belongs on this list because Belmont’s Curse is also an exploration game in which movement abilities change how you read the environment. Ori simply places more weight on agility, platforming flow, and narrative feeling than on gothic combat or equipment management.

What makes traversal the star

Ori is the best option when the joy of movement matters as much as defeating enemies. Routes are designed around platforming challenges and puzzles, so the question is often not only whether you can reach a location, but whether you can chain movement options accurately enough to get there. That emphasis suits players who enjoy learning a route’s geometry and then executing it smoothly.

How its progression differs

Ori’s upgrades support mobility and access through the world. This creates the familiar Metroidvania cycle of discovering a blocked path, gaining a new capability, and returning to explore it. It is less equipment-driven than Belmont’s Curse and Bloodstained: the documented description does not present a comparable seven-category weapon system, relic framework, or boss-to-Arcana conversion.

Tone and presentation

The game’s fantasy world is luminous and emotionally focused rather than gothic. Its storytelling and hand-painted presentation aim for wonder and feeling, while Belmont’s Curse builds its identity around curses, castles, and supernatural danger. Pick Ori for platforming, puzzles, and an emotional journey; pick another recommendation if dark atmosphere and build experimentation are essential.

How the three recommendations compare by player priority

If you want classic castle exploration

Start with Bloodstained. Its official description places exploration at the center and identifies it with the Metroidvania and gothic tags. Hollow Knight is the next choice if you are comfortable exchanging castle imagery for a larger, stranger interconnected world. Ori works when exploration means navigating demanding platforming routes rather than searching rooms for equipment.

If combat is your deciding factor

Choose Bloodstained for the broadest action-RPG toolkit, including equipment-centered progression. Choose Hollow Knight for precision slash, dodge, and dash timing. Choose Ori when combat is most enjoyable as part of a movement sequence or platforming challenge.

If you want abilities to reshape the map

Hollow Knight offers the clearest documented combination of ability growth, extensive mapping tools, and a vast interconnected world. Bloodstained is the closest structural alternative because its identity is explicitly exploration-focused and Metroidvania-tagged. Ori uses the same broad progression idea but channels it into platforming and puzzles.

If atmosphere matters most

Bloodstained is the strongest tonal match because its official tags include gothic and dark fantasy. Hollow Knight offers melancholic fantasy with a distinct insect-world identity. Ori’s luminous emotional fantasy is intentionally farther from Belmont’s Curse, but it may be the right choice if you want contrast rather than imitation.

What to expect when moving from Belmont’s Curse

Expect the same broad loop, not the same controls

In each recommendation, exploration and combat reinforce one another: fighting helps you survive or gain progress, while exploration reveals routes, abilities, or rewards that alter later encounters. The input logic and pacing still differ. Rose’s whip mechanics are a defining feature of Belmont’s Curse, so no recommendation should be described as a one-for-one replacement for whip traversal.

Expect different meanings of “build”

Belmont’s Curse documents seven weapon categories, relics, and boss-earned Arcana. Bloodstained is the closest match when you want equipment and RPG-style growth. Hollow Knight expresses customization through charms and abilities. Ori is primarily about movement capabilities and access, with less emphasis on equipment-driven loadouts.

Expect different kinds of challenge

Hollow Knight’s challenge is strongly tied to reading attacks and executing precise dodges and strikes. Ori’s difficulty often appears in platforming sequences and puzzles. Bloodstained’s action-RPG structure makes experimentation with equipment part of the solution. Decide whether you want your next obstacle to test combat timing, movement execution, or build selection.

A practical decision path

  1. Start with your non-negotiable feature. If it is gothic exploration with character building, select Bloodstained. If it is precision combat and a huge connected map, select Hollow Knight. If it is movement, puzzles, and emotional storytelling, select Ori.
  2. Decide how much tonal similarity you need. Bloodstained stays closest to dark fantasy and gothic presentation. Hollow Knight is a deliberate tonal departure. Ori is the largest visual and emotional departure.
  3. Choose your progression preference. Select Bloodstained for equipment variety, Hollow Knight for charms and movement abilities, or Ori for mobility-focused upgrades.
  4. Check your edition before buying. The cited listings document PC releases; console versions, physical stock, pricing, and regional availability can change. Verify the exact platform and edition at the time of purchase.
  5. Use your first session as a fit test. In Bloodstained, see whether equipment choices and exploration feel rewarding. In Hollow Knight, test whether deliberate dodge-and-slash timing is satisfying. In Ori, test whether platforming flow and puzzles hold your attention.

Bottom-line recommendation by use case

  • Closest overall: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
  • Best for exacting combat and interconnected exploration: Hollow Knight.
  • Best for movement, puzzles, and emotional storytelling: Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

For most players specifically asking for games like Belmont’s Curse, begin with Bloodstained. It shares the most important structural pillars: a 2D exploration-focused action format, gothic dark-fantasy atmosphere, and progression that invites experimentation. Move to Hollow Knight when combat precision and map interconnection outrank setting. Choose Ori when the most important part of the formula is the feeling of moving fluidly through a beautiful world.
