Bully: Scholarship Edition is still the closest match for open-world school-life gameplay. It makes the school the actual game world, combining classes, cliques, pranks, romance, authority figures, free roaming and real-time third-person brawling. If you want a different game, choose Persona 5 Royal for the strongest school-year routine and relationship systems, Life is Strange: True Colors for social drama, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition for open-world martial-arts combat, or Hogwarts Legacy for school-centered fantasy exploration.

This guide separates games that genuinely recreate school life from games that only share one or two of Bully’s traits. That distinction matters: a title can offer classes and friendships without offering a sandbox, or offer excellent combat while having no school setting at all.

What makes Bully difficult to replace

Most games like Bully match only part of its appeal. Bully is unusual because its systems reinforce one another inside the same setting. Bullworth Academy is not simply a location visited between missions; the schoolyard, classrooms, cliques and authority figures form the structure around which the entire experience is organized.

Rockstar’s official product description frames the game as a schoolyard version of its irreverent open-world formula. Its distinctive combination includes:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • A school that functions as the main world: classes and campus routines are central rather than decorative.
  • Free roaming: you can move through the school environment and surrounding areas instead of following only a linear sequence of scenes.
  • Social groups: cliques affect the way the world is organized and give the setting more structure than a generic open-world map.
  • Pranks and rule breaking: mischief is part of the gameplay loop, not just background humor.
  • Real-time third-person brawling: physical confrontations happen directly in the world rather than through menu-driven combat.
  • Relationships and romance: social interactions sit alongside exploration and action.
  • Authority figures: the school setting creates consequences and friction that would not exist in an ordinary city sandbox.

That combination is why a recommendation list needs clear trade-offs. The closest alternative is not necessarily the game with the most fighting, the largest map or the most detailed dialogue. It is the one that matches the parts of school life you value most.

Quick comparison: the strongest Bully alternatives

Game Best for School-life depth Roaming/sandbox Combat style Main trade-off
Bully: Scholarship Edition The closest overall match High High Real-time third-person brawling Older game and availability varies by storefront
Persona 5 Royal Calendar-based school routine and relationships High Medium Turn-based RPG combat Less free-form physical sandbox action
Life is Strange: True Colors Social drama and exploration Low to medium Medium Narrative exploration rather than brawling Not a school simulator
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition Open-world fighting and city exploration None High Real-time martial-arts combat Crime setting replaces school life
Hogwarts Legacy School-themed fantasy exploration Medium High Action RPG combat Magical academy rather than realistic school life

1. Bully: Scholarship Edition — the closest overall match

If your priority is a game where school is the main setting, start here. Scholarship Edition preserves the formula that makes Bully distinctive: a student navigating Bullworth Academy while attending classes, dealing with cliques, pulling pranks, fighting, forming relationships and avoiding authority figures.

Why it matches

  • The school environment is central to progression and everyday play.
  • Roaming and mischief occur in the same space as lessons and social encounters.
  • Combat is real-time and third-person, so physical confrontations feel immediate rather than abstract.
  • Cliques and authority figures give the school world recognizable social pressure.
  • The tone mixes humor with a deliberately irreverent view of school life.

Who should choose it

Choose Scholarship Edition if you want the complete combination: classes, cliques, pranks, romance, free roaming and brawling in one game. It is also the right choice when “open-world school game” means that the school itself must be the primary sandbox rather than a backdrop for a separate adventure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The compromise

It is an older game, and availability varies by storefront. Check the current listing for your region and preferred platform before buying; prices and stock can change. Those practical limitations do not alter its design fit, but they can determine whether it is the easiest option to play today.

2. Persona 5 Royal — the best school-life routine alternative

Persona 5 Royal is the strongest alternative when the part you remember most is the rhythm of a school year. Its calendar structure, friendships and after-class activities make school life a major organizing system rather than a cosmetic theme.

What it does better than most alternatives

  • Structured time: the school calendar gives days and activities a deliberate rhythm.
  • Relationships: friendships and social development are core decisions, not optional flavor text.
  • After-class life: the game treats time outside lessons as part of the same overall routine.
  • Seasonal events: the year changes through scheduled events, giving the setting a sense of progression.

Where it differs from Bully

Persona 5 Royal is a turn-based RPG, not a free-form third-person brawler. You do not choose it for schoolyard fights, prank-based sandbox play or the physical immediacy of Bully’s combat. Its roaming is more structured, and its school-life systems are built around planning time and relationships rather than improvising around a campus.

Best fit

Pick Persona 5 Royal if your ideal “game like Bully” has a school calendar, recurring routines and meaningful relationships. It is the best match for players who want to feel that each day has consequences and that social choices shape the broader adventure.

3. Life is Strange: True Colors — for social drama and exploration

Life is Strange: True Colors fits readers who want character-focused storytelling, social tension and exploration more than a school simulator. It is a social-drama choice rather than a direct recreation of Bully’s school sandbox.

What carries over

  • Social focus: personal relationships and emotional situations drive the experience.
  • Exploration: the setting rewards examining places and following character-driven story threads.
  • Coming-of-age tone: its concerns are closer to interpersonal drama than to action-first open-world design.

What does not carry over

There is no equivalent of Bullworth’s school-centered routine, clique hierarchy, prank system or real-time brawling loop. Its roaming is in service of narrative discovery, not a school-life simulation. Calling it a school game without qualification would set the wrong expectation.

Best fit

Choose it when the words “games like Bully” really mean believable young characters, social conflict and a place you can explore at your own pace. If your priority is classes, campus rules and fighting, select another title from this list.

4. Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition — the combat-and-city substitute

Sleeping Dogs is the strongest partial match for players who mainly want open-world movement and satisfying real-time fighting. It replaces the school setting with a crime story and a city environment, so it should be treated as a combat substitute rather than a school-life alternative.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why action-focused players may prefer it

  • High roaming freedom: the city provides a larger-style sandbox than a school campus.
  • Real-time martial-arts combat: fights are direct, physical and integrated into exploration.
  • Action-first pacing: the world is built around movement, confrontations and urban activity.

Why it is not a school game

It has no school-life simulation, classes, cliques or academy routine. The crime setting changes the tone and the stakes completely. If you want the feeling of being a student navigating rules and rival groups, Sleeping Dogs will not provide it.

Best fit

Pick Sleeping Dogs when your checklist is “open-world fighting and exploration” and the school requirement is optional. It is a strong replacement for Bully’s physical sandbox, but not for its social setting.

5. Hogwarts Legacy — school-centered fantasy exploration

Hogwarts Legacy offers a school-themed open-world experience, but its academy is magical rather than realistic. That makes it a thematic match for readers who want lessons, campus identity and exploration in a school setting, even if they do not need ordinary modern school life.

What matches Bully’s structure

  • School-centered identity: the academy is an important part of the game’s premise.
  • Exploration: the world supports roaming beyond a single classroom or linear route.
  • Action RPG combat: encounters are real-time and built around active abilities.

What changes the experience

The setting is a fantasy academy, so its conflicts, activities and combat do not reproduce Bullworth’s realistic schoolyard tone. It also lacks the specific combination of pranks, modern cliques and student misbehavior that defines Bully.

Best fit

Choose Hogwarts Legacy if “school-life gameplay” means living in and exploring an academy. Choose Bully or Persona 5 Royal instead if you specifically want realistic school routines, contemporary social groups or a calendar-driven student life.

Which game matches the feature you care about?

Use the following breakdown when the phrase “like Bully” describes one specific feature rather than the whole package.

If school must be the main setting

Start with Bully: Scholarship Edition. Persona 5 Royal is the next strongest choice if you prefer a structured school year over free-form action. Hogwarts Legacy works when a fantasy academy is acceptable.

If you want classes, routines and relationships

Persona 5 Royal offers the clearest calendar-based routine, friendships, after-class activities and seasonal events. Bully provides a more physical, sandbox-oriented version of student life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want real-time fighting

Bully supplies third-person brawling, while Sleeping Dogs offers a stronger city-scale martial-arts substitute. Hogwarts Legacy adds real-time action RPG combat but changes the setting to fantasy.

If you want social drama

Life is Strange: True Colors is the most appropriate choice. Its emphasis is character exploration and emotional storytelling rather than combat or school simulation.

If you want the most freedom to roam

Bully, Sleeping Dogs and Hogwarts Legacy are the high-roaming options in this group. Persona 5 Royal provides a more structured form of movement, and Life is Strange: True Colors uses exploration primarily to support its narrative.

School-life depth versus sandbox freedom

These games sit on different sides of an important design trade-off. A detailed school routine usually requires structure: calendars, scheduled activities, relationships and story timing. A large sandbox emphasizes freedom: wandering, combat and optional encounters. Bully is unusual because it combines both at a relatively high level.

If your priority is… Choose first Why
The complete schoolyard sandbox Bully: Scholarship Edition It combines classes, cliques, pranks, relationships, authority figures, roaming and brawling.
A planned student routine Persona 5 Royal Its calendar, friendships, after-class activities and seasonal events organize the experience.
Emotional and social storytelling Life is Strange: True Colors It prioritizes social drama and exploration over fighting.
Open-world combat Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition It offers city exploration and real-time martial-arts action without school systems.
Fantasy academy exploration Hogwarts Legacy It places exploration and action RPG combat in a magical school setting.

How to choose without buying the wrong kind of game

  1. Decide whether school is mandatory. If the game must revolve around classes, cliques and student rules, narrow your list to Bully, Persona 5 Royal or Hogwarts Legacy.
  2. Choose your combat format. Select Bully or Sleeping Dogs for direct real-time fighting. Select Persona 5 Royal for turn-based RPG combat. Select Life is Strange: True Colors if combat is not part of the requirement.
  3. Choose structure or improvisation. Persona 5 Royal emphasizes a calendar and planned activities. Bully and Sleeping Dogs favor roaming and spontaneous encounters. Hogwarts Legacy combines academy identity with broad exploration.
  4. Decide how realistic the setting should be. Bully is the realistic schoolyard option. Hogwarts Legacy is explicitly fantastical. Sleeping Dogs replaces school with crime, and Life is Strange: True Colors focuses on social drama rather than school simulation.
  5. Check current availability. Retail listings, prices and platform availability can change. This is especially important for the older Scholarship Edition, whose storefront availability varies.

Common recommendation mistakes

Calling every coming-of-age game a school sandbox

A game can feature young characters and social conflict without simulating school life. Life is Strange: True Colors is valuable for social drama, but it does not reproduce Bully’s classes, cliques or brawling structure.

Confusing any combat with Bully-style combat

Turn-based RPG battles and action RPG encounters are mechanically different from third-person schoolyard brawling. Persona 5 Royal and Hogwarts Legacy can both satisfy an action preference in different ways, but neither is a direct replacement for Bully’s physical sandbox combat.

Ignoring the setting trade-off

Sleeping Dogs may be the best combat substitute, yet its crime setting removes every school-life system. Hogwarts Legacy may be the best academy substitute, yet its magical world changes the tone and the kinds of activities you will perform.

Assuming a larger map means a better match

Map size alone does not create school-life gameplay. The defining question is whether classes, social groups, routines and authority figures shape what you do. That is why Bully can remain the closest match even when another game offers a broader city or fantasy world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendation by player type

  • Want the closest possible overall experience: Bully: Scholarship Edition.
  • Want the richest school-year schedule and relationships: Persona 5 Royal.
  • Want character drama and exploration instead of fighting: Life is Strange: True Colors.
  • Want open-world martial-arts combat: Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition.
  • Want a school-themed fantasy adventure: Hogwarts Legacy.

No authoritative, directly comparable sales, player-count or review-score figures establish one of these games as objectively superior. The practical choice depends on which Bully feature you are trying to preserve: school systems, roaming, relationships, tone or real-time combat.
