If you want something to play while you wait for Angelfall, start with Hades for the closest combination of repeatable runs, permanent upgrades, fast melee combat and story. Choose Vampire Survivors for short, low-input sessions built around destroying enormous enemy waves, or Diablo IV for a much larger dark-fantasy action RPG with loot, classes and online cooperation.

Angelfall is still listed as “Coming soon” on Steam. The upcoming game from The3rd.One Games puts you in control of an Archdemon who kills humans and holy warriors, harvests Souls and develops a build through Corruption, abilities, rerolls and Hellforge-altered runes. The recommendations below are games you can play now, not evidence that Angelfall has released.

What makes a game “like Angelfall”?

The most useful way to compare alternatives is to separate Angelfall’s premise from its structure. Its premise is unusual: you are the monster, not a hero defending humanity. Its advertised structure is a roguelike action loop in which each run offers choices, synergies and bosses, while Souls and other systems help you become stronger. It also advertises single-player and online/LAN co-op.

That combination creates several different reasons someone might search for an alternative. You may want repeated attempts with permanent progress, a game that throws huge numbers of enemies at you, a dark supernatural setting, deep build planning, or a cooperative action RPG. No available game reproduces every part of the pitch, so the best choice depends on which element matters most.

#1 Best Overall
Hades - Nintendo Switch
  • Battle out of hell in Hades, recipient of more than 50 Game of the Year awards
  • Includes a download code for the Hades Original Soundtrack, by composer Darren Korb, best known for his work on developer Supergiant's past titles like Transistor and Bastion.
  • Also includes a full-color 32-page character compendium booklet, featuring beautiful artwork of the game's colorful cast of gods, ghosts, and monsters, all by Supergiant's art director Jen Zee.
  • Defy the god of the dead as you hack and slash out of the Underworld in this rogue-like dungeon crawler from the creators of Bastion and Transistor.
  • As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, you'll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself.

Angelfall’s current status

The Steam store currently gives Angelfall a “Coming soon” release status. That means there is no released version to use as a benchmark for balance, performance, final content or the quality of its co-op. Descriptions of Corruption, runes, the Hellforge, bosses and build combinations describe the announced design rather than a finished player experience.

The announced design in brief

  • You play a powerful Archdemon and fight humans and holy warriors.
  • Souls are harvested as part of the power-growth fantasy.
  • A branching passive tree called Corruption, skills, abilities, rerolls and Hellforge-modified runes support different builds.
  • Runs include bosses and are designed for single-player or online/LAN co-op.

The three games below cover those ingredients from different angles. Hades is the closest structural substitute, Vampire Survivors is the clearest horde-and-snowball substitute, and Diablo IV is the closest large-scale dark-fantasy loot RPG.

Quick comparison

Game Progression shape Combat and enemy density Build customization Narrative focus Co-op How it differs from Angelfall
Hades Repeated escape attempts with permanent upgrades and new run combinations Fast hack-and-slash encounters; room-by-room runs Run-specific combinations plus permanent upgrades Strong character relationships and fully voiced story events Single-player Mythological setting, heroic protagonist and no co-op
Vampire Survivors Short survival runs with choices that snowball power Very high enemy counts; simple controls and automatic attacks Weapon and upgrade choices drive each run Light compared with a story-led action RPG Single-player, online co-op and local co-op Pixel-art presentation and auto-attacks rather than advertised 3D isometric action
Diablo IV Persistent character development, campaign progression, loot and seasonal content Isometric action RPG combat against demons and other enemies Class, gear and character-customization systems Campaign-scale dark-fantasy world Online co-op Persistent service-style progression instead of compact roguelike runs

Availability is listed separately from similarity here because Angelfall is unreleased. The information supplied for all three recommendations comes from their Steam listings; no additional console, edition or regional availability should be inferred from this comparison.

Hades: the best overall substitute for runs plus story

Hades is the strongest first recommendation if what attracts you to Angelfall is the rhythm of entering a run, assembling a build, dying or escaping, and carrying progress into the next attempt. Each escape attempt through the Underworld presents new build combinations, while permanent upgrades ensure that a failed run still contributes to future progress. That gives it the same important emotional cadence promised by Angelfall: make decisions under pressure, see how a combination performs, then return with more options.

Rank #2
Hades II - Nintendo Switch™ 2 Edition
  • Battle beyond the Underworld using dark sorcery to take on the Titan of Time in this bewitching sequel to the award-winning rogue-like dungeon crawler.

Why its structure matches

Hades treats a run as both a combat challenge and a set of meaningful choices. You are not simply repeating an identical level with higher statistics. The appeal comes from adapting to what the current attempt offers and learning which combinations suit your preferred approach. Permanent improvements then widen the choices available in later attempts. This is the closest match in the list for readers who specifically want a roguelike loop rather than a conventional campaign.

Where Hades is better for story-driven players

Steam describes an Underworld escape story with permanent upgrades, new combinations and story events delivered by a fully voiced cast. Character relationships and dialogue continue to develop around your attempts, so failure is part of the narrative rhythm instead of a reset that erases context. If you want a reason to care about the next run beyond a stronger build, Hades provides considerably more character focus than the other two recommendations.

Important differences

Hades is mythological rather than demonic, and you play a hero trying to escape rather than an Archdemon invading the human world. Its combat is built around focused encounters instead of the “slaughter hordes of humans and holy warriors” fantasy advertised for Angelfall. It is also single-player, so it cannot stand in for the announced online/LAN co-op.

Who should choose it

  • Choose Hades when repeatable runs and permanent progression are more important than playing a villain.
  • Choose it when a fully voiced narrative and recurring characters matter as much as combat.
  • Choose it when you want a demanding action loop with enough build variety to make repeated attempts feel different.
  • Do not choose it as your first substitute if co-op or screen-filling enemy hordes are your main requirements.

Steam lists Hades as released on 17 September 2020. At the time of the 2026 check, its Steam page showed 98% positive English reviews from 143,041 reviews. That percentage and count are a snapshot and can change as new reviews arrive.

Hades Limited Edition (Nintendo Switch)
  • As the immortal Prince of the Underworld, you'll wield the powers and mythic weapons of Olympus to break free from the clutches of the god of the dead himself, while growing stronger and unravelling more of the story with each unique escape attempt.
  • The Olympians have your back! Meet Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, and many more, and choose from their dozens of powerful Boons that enhance your abilities. There are thousands of viable character builds to discover as you go.
  • A fully-voiced cast of colourful, larger-than-life characters is waiting to meet you! Grow your relationships with them, and experience thousands of unique story events as you learn about what's really at stake for this big, dysfunctional family.
  • New surprises await each time you delve into the ever-shifting Underworld, whose guardian bosses will remember you. Use the powerful Mirror of Night to grow permanently stronger and give yourself a leg up the next time you run away from home.
  • Permanent upgrades mean you don't have to be a god yourself to experience the exciting combat and gripping story. Though, if you happen to be one, crank up the challenge and get ready for some white-knuckle action that will put your well-practiced skills to the test.

Vampire Survivors: the best choice for hordes and short runs

Vampire Survivors is the most direct answer to the fantasy of overwhelming masses of enemies and watching a build snowball. Steam describes it as a gothic-horror casual game with roguelite elements: survive until dawn, make upgrade choices and become powerful enough to face hundreds of monsters. The game’s central pleasure is escalation. A modest beginning can turn into a screen full of attacks and enemies, with each choice pushing the run toward a different combination.

Why it matches the horde fantasy

If your question is “Is there a game where I can fight hordes and keep getting stronger?”, this is the clearest pick. The enemy density is the point, not an occasional set piece. Its Dark Fantasy, Bullet Hell, Action Roguelike and RPG tags describe the overlap with Angelfall’s advertised dark action and run-based growth more accurately than a traditional campaign RPG would.

The trade-off: simplicity over character action

Vampire Survivors uses a much simpler control model than the 3D isometric action described for Angelfall. Steam presents it around automatic attacks and straightforward movement, so the challenge is positioning, timing and choosing upgrades rather than manually chaining a broad set of attacks. That makes it easy to start and well suited to short sessions, but it will not satisfy someone looking for deliberate, character-centred melee combat.

Co-op and session length

Unlike Hades, Vampire Survivors supports single-player, online co-op and local co-op. That makes it the most practical current option if you want to play with others while waiting for Angelfall and do not need a persistent shared world. Its run format also works well when you have a limited amount of time: you can focus on surviving the current attempt rather than committing to a long campaign session.

Hades II - Nintendo Switch™ 2 Edition (European Version)
  • Battle beyond the Underworld to vanquish the Titan of Time as the Princess of the Dead in this bewitching sequel to the original rogue-like dungeon crawler. Hades II lets players explore a bigger, deeper mythic world with the full might of Olympus at their call in a story that reacts to their every setback and accomplishment.

Who should choose it

  • Choose Vampire Survivors for the fastest route to giant enemy waves and a dramatic power curve.
  • Choose it for low-input play, short sessions and either online or couch co-op.
  • Choose it if the build-snowball feeling matters more than dialogue, cinematic presentation or a controllable hero with many manual abilities.
  • Look elsewhere if you specifically want the villain perspective, fully voiced character drama or detailed isometric action combat.

Steam lists Vampire Survivors as released on 20 October 2022. Its Steam page showed 98% positive English reviews from 128,308 reviews when checked in 2026; that figure is a changing snapshot rather than a permanent score.

Diablo IV: the best full-scale dark-fantasy action RPG

Diablo IV is the right substitute when “like Angelfall” means demons, a dark-fantasy setting, isometric combat, character customization, loot and cooperative play more than it means roguelike runs. Steam lists demons, dark fantasy, isometric action RPG combat, loot, character customization, single-player, online co-op and seasonal content.

Why its world and combat are relevant

Diablo IV supplies the most conventional dark-fantasy action RPG experience in this group. The focus is a larger campaign and an ongoing character rather than a self-contained run. You fight through a world built around demons and loot, tune a character over time and can bring other players into online co-op. For a reader who wants a substantial setting to inhabit while waiting for Angelfall, that scale is an advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The progression difference matters

Diablo IV’s progression is persistent and service-style, with seasonal content, rather than a sequence of compact attempts that reset most of the immediate build. You spend longer developing a character, collecting equipment and refining a class-based setup. The result can be deep and absorbing, but it does not reproduce the tension of making a temporary run build and risking it in a single session.

Good Smile Company Hades II: Melinoë Nendoroid Action Figure
  • A Good Smile Company import
  • From the popular video game
  • Includes two face plates; brooding and smiling expressions
  • Includes her signature weapons, the dagger "Lim" and the sickle "Oros"
  • Enjoy recreating all kinds of poses

Co-op and customization

Its online co-op and character-customization emphasis make Diablo IV the strongest fit for readers who want to plan a character with friends over a longer period. The trade-off is commitment: the game’s value comes from campaign and ongoing progression, so it is less suitable if you only want quick, self-contained runs.

Who should choose it

  • Choose Diablo IV for a broad dark-fantasy world, demons, loot and long-term character development.
  • Choose it when online co-op is essential and you want a persistent shared experience.
  • Choose it when “action RPG” is more important to you than the roguelike reset-and-retry structure.
  • Do not choose it expecting the same run-by-run format, temporary build risk or villain perspective announced for Angelfall.

Steam lists Diablo IV as released on 17 October 2023. At the time of the 2026 check, its Steam page showed 73% positive English reviews from 22,253 reviews. As with the other review figures, this is a time-stamped snapshot that may change.

Choose by the part of Angelfall you want to replace

Use the following decision path rather than treating one game as a complete substitute for every announced feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start with the progression loop. If you want runs, resets and permanent improvements, pick Hades. If you want a persistent character and a longer campaign, pick Diablo IV. If you want very short survival attempts, pick Vampire Survivors.
  2. Decide how much control you want in combat. Hades is the most focused manual action game in this list. Vampire Survivors simplifies attacks so that positioning and upgrade choices dominate. Diablo IV sits between those extremes as a full action RPG built around classes and gear.
  3. Decide whether the story is a primary requirement. Hades makes character relationships and fully voiced events central. Diablo IV offers campaign-scale dark fantasy. Vampire Survivors prioritizes the survival loop over an extensive character narrative.
  4. Decide whether you need co-op today. Vampire Survivors supports online and local co-op. Diablo IV supports online co-op. Hades is single-player. None of those facts confirms how Angelfall’s announced online/LAN co-op will work in its final release.
  5. Decide whether the protagonist matters. None of these games duplicates the advertised Archdemon viewpoint. Hades makes you a mythological escapee, Vampire Survivors focuses on survival rather than a villain narrative, and Diablo IV places you in a dark-fantasy RPG world rather than specifically asking you to play the invading monster.

What each game can and cannot prepare you for

If you want to practise or experience… Best current choice Reason
Run planning, adaptation and permanent upgrades Hades Its escape attempts combine temporary build choices with lasting progression and continuing story events.
Large enemy waves and rapid power snowballing Vampire Survivors Surviving against hundreds of monsters and making upgrade choices are its central loop.
Dark-fantasy demons, loot and a long-term character Diablo IV It combines isometric action RPG combat, customization, loot and seasonal content.
Playing with friends immediately Vampire Survivors or Diablo IV Both list co-op support, with Vampire Survivors offering online and local options and Diablo IV listing online co-op.
A fully voiced, character-led progression between attempts Hades Steam specifically describes story events with a fully voiced cast.

How to set expectations while Angelfall is unreleased

It is reasonable to use these games as substitutes for particular moods or systems, but not to treat them as proof of what the finished Angelfall will feel like. The announced game combines a reverse-horror premise, a branching Corruption tree, abilities, rerolls, Hellforge rune changes, bosses and co-op. The current Steam status does not establish its final release date, performance, monetization, balance or whether every announced feature will ship unchanged.

For that reason, choose according to the experience you can play now. Hades is the safest bet for a polished run-based action loop with narrative continuity. Vampire Survivors is the most efficient way to get immediate horde survival and cooperative sessions. Diablo IV is the broadest option for dark-fantasy action RPG progression, loot and online play. When Angelfall launches, those distinctions will help you judge it on its actual systems rather than on the promise of its store description.
