Road 96 is the closest released game to AfterZero: The Last Drive if you want travel shaped by choices, changing encounters and a road-trip structure. Firewatch is the better alternative for environmental discovery, radio dialogue, isolation and a tightly directed mystery. Neither is a complete substitute for AfterZero: Road 96 has no vehicle-upgrade, scavenging or survivor-base loop, while Firewatch has no driving at all.
That distinction matters because AfterZero is not available yet. Italian studio 3DClouds has announced it for 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, with the Epic Games listing specifying a Q1 2027 target. The recommendations below therefore compare finished games with an announced design rather than with a released product.

What makes AfterZero different?
AfterZero: The Last Drive is planned as a single-player, story-driven driving-survival adventure set in an apparently endless winter. You drive an upgradable off-road vehicle through a post-industrial wasteland, search for resources, improve the vehicle’s tools, help other survivors and attempt to reach safety.

The announced gameplay loop
The official game description places the vehicle at the center of every expedition. You take the Old Grizzly through abandoned cities, frozen lakes and mountain forests, then return to the Firewall survivor camp. Between trips, the announced activities include crafting equipment, repairing an old train and investigating an old artificial intelligence that controls machines in the wasteland.
#1 Best Overall
- Moments of action, exploration, contemplative melancholy, human encounters and wacky situations.
- Set against a backdrop of authoritarian rule and oppression.
- A stunning visual style and soundtrack filled with 90s hits
- Thousands of routes through the game combined so each player can create their own unique stories.
Examples of planned vehicle or expedition equipment include grappling hooks, ice tires and nitrogen guns. These details suggest that driving is not merely a way to move between story scenes: the car is intended to be a tool for traversal, problem solving and survival. Resource gathering, upgrades and camp work are equally important parts of the announced structure.
What is confirmed, and what is not
3DClouds CEO Francesco Bruschi described the mix as “exploration, puzzle solving, upgradeable car and base elements and frozen peril.” That is a useful summary of the intended identity, but it is not a hands-on assessment of the finished game.
SteamDB currently lists descriptive tags such as exploration, driving, action-adventure, third-person, post-apocalyptic, base-building, choices-matter, story-rich, linear, narrative, open-world, snow, management, science-fiction and crafting. These are prerelease metadata, so they indicate the announced direction rather than guaranteeing that every tag will represent a final feature in the shipped version.

3DClouds has announced a 2027 release for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. The Epic Games listing gives the more specific target of Q1 2027. Until launch, platform availability, final systems, performance, price and the exact scope of the world can change. Treat AfterZero as a wishlist or watch-list game for now, not as a game you can buy and play today.
The two strongest current comparisons
The available evidence points to two different kinds of similarity rather than a long list of interchangeable games. Road 96 matches the travel-and-choice side of the concept. Firewatch matches the atmosphere-and-discovery side. Looking at the comparison axes separately gives a more useful answer than calling either one a direct replacement.
| Comparison axis | AfterZero: The Last Drive | Road 96 | Firewatch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driving centrality | The announced primary expedition tool is an upgradable off-road vehicle. | Travel is the narrative frame, but the game is a hitchhiking road trip rather than vehicle-centered survival. | No driving system; exploration takes place on foot. |
| World structure | Announced as a frozen, post-industrial wasteland with open-world and linear narrative tags in prerelease metadata. | Thousands of possible roads and procedural variation shape repeated journeys. | A curated Wyoming wilderness built around a directed mystery. |
| Survival and systems | Scavenging, crafting, vehicle tools, weather danger, survivor assistance and camp or train work are announced elements. | Its emphasis is encounters, conversations and decisions during travel. | Its emphasis is exploration, dialogue, environmental discovery and relationship development. |
| Narrative agency | “Choices-matter” appears in prerelease metadata, but the final effect of choices is not yet established. | Choices explicitly affect the journey and the people encountered. | Progression is directed, with discovery and conversation revealing the story. |
| Availability | Unreleased; announced for 2027, with Q1 2027 listed by Epic. | Released August 16, 2021. | Released on Windows, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. |
Road 96: the best match for choice-driven road travel
If your main reason for searching for games like AfterZero is the idea of a journey where every stop can change what happens next, start with Road 96. Its official Steam description presents a story-driven adventure in which you hitchhike toward freedom, meet interconnected characters, make choices on every mile and travel across thousands of possible roads.
Rank #2
- Road 96 is a crazy, beautiful road-trip. The discovery of exciting places, and unusual people on your own personal journey to freedom.
- An ever-evolving story-driven adventure inspired by Tarantino, The Coen Brothers, and Bong Joon-ho. Made by the award-winning creators of Valiant Hearts and Memories Retold.
- Moments of action, exploration, contemplative melancholy, human encounters and wacky situations. Set against a backdrop of authoritarian rule and oppression.
- A stunning visual style, a soundtrack filled with 90s hits, and thousands routes through the game combine so each player can create their own unique stories on Road 96.
Why it fits AfterZero
- Travel is the organizing principle. Movement through a dangerous or uncertain landscape is not background transportation; it is how the story delivers encounters.
- Decisions are central. The journey is shaped by choices and by the people met along the way, making narrative agency a primary attraction.
- Repeat journeys have variation. The possible roads and encounter combinations give the road-trip format more replay variety than a single fixed route.
- The tone supports discovery. You learn about the world through places, conversations and events encountered while trying to reach a destination.
Where Road 96 is not a substitute
Road 96 is a procedural hitchhiking road trip, not a driving-survival simulation. You should not expect the announced AfterZero systems of an upgradable off-road vehicle, resource scavenging, craftable grappling hooks, ice tires, nitrogen guns, a survivor camp or an old train to repair. Its design priority is the changing social and narrative journey, whereas AfterZero’s announced identity combines travel with vehicle progression and frozen-wasteland survival.
Who should choose it
Choose Road 96 if your priority order is branching choices, character encounters, replayable travel and the feeling that each leg of a trip can produce a different story. It is also the practical recommendation for someone who wants to play a finished game now while waiting to see whether AfterZero delivers on its announced systems.
Firewatch: the strongest story-and-exploration alternative
Firewatch is the better choice when the phrase “like AfterZero” means isolation, environmental clues, radio conversations and a mystery that unfolds as you explore. Campo Santo’s official FAQ describes a single-player first-person game in which Henry works as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. His main human connection is his supervisor, Delilah, reached through a handheld radio.
Why it fits AfterZero
- Isolation is mechanical and emotional. Exploration takes place in a remote wilderness, while radio communication supplies the principal ongoing relationship.
- The environment carries information. Places, routes and discoveries gradually reveal what is happening, making observation as important as movement.
- The story is deliberately focused. Campo Santo calls it “incredibly story driven,” with the relationship between Henry and Delilah and a tense mystery providing the forward momentum.
- It is a finished, established release. The FAQ lists Windows, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions.
Where Firewatch is not a substitute
There is no driving, vehicle upgrading, scavenging economy, crafting, survivor-camp management or announced frozen-weather survival loop. Firewatch is a directed exploration and dialogue experience rather than an open-world driving adventure. Its similarity is strongest in mood, discovery and communication, not in mechanics.
Who should choose it
Choose Firewatch if you care most about atmosphere, character relationships, environmental storytelling and a compact mystery. It is especially suitable when driving is optional to you and the emotional or investigative side of AfterZero is the part that interests you.

If driving itself is non-negotiable
AfterZero is the only title here with an announced vehicle as the main expedition instrument. Road 96 involves travel but is built around hitchhiking rather than maintaining and upgrading a car. Firewatch has no driving. If you need a game to test the exact combination of off-road movement, vehicle tools and frozen hazards, neither released comparison can confirm that experience yet.
Rank #3
- An ever-evolving story-driven adventure inspired by tarantino, the coen Brothers, and bong joon-ho. Made by the award-winning creators of valiant hearts and memories retold.
- Moments of action, exploration, contemplative melancholy, human encounters and wacky situations. Set against a backdrop of authoritarian rule and oppression.
- A stunning visual style, a soundtrack filled with 90S hits, and thousands routes through the game combine so each player can create their own unique stories on road 96.
If choices and replayability matter most
Road 96 is the clearest fit. Its description explicitly connects choices with the journey and the characters encountered, and its thousands of possible roads support variation between runs. AfterZero is tagged “choices-matter,” but that claim comes from prerelease metadata; the extent of its branching structure is not established. Firewatch offers discovery-driven progression rather than a replayable branching-road format.
If atmosphere and mystery matter most
Firewatch is the focused recommendation. Its remote setting, handheld-radio relationship and unfolding mystery put conversation and observation ahead of systems management. AfterZero’s announced wasteland, old AI and survivor community suggest a broader survival mystery, but the final pacing and narrative structure are not yet known.
If you want survival systems
AfterZero is the only one of the three announced with scavenging, crafting, vehicle tools, weather pressure and survivor-base upkeep. Road 96 and Firewatch should be approached as narrative adventures, not as substitutes for resource management or equipment progression.
If you need something playable now
Both Road 96 and Firewatch are released games. AfterZero has only a future target: 2027 overall, with Q1 2027 shown on Epic. Store listings, editions, prices and regional availability can change, so check the relevant platform store at the time you plan to buy.
A practical decision guide
- Start with your must-have feature. Pick Road 96 for branching travel, Firewatch for atmospheric exploration, or wait for AfterZero if the vehicle-survival combination is the reason you are interested.
- Decide whether a fixed story is acceptable. Firewatch is curated and directed. Road 96 is designed around changing routes and encounters. AfterZero’s final balance between linear narrative and open-world systems remains unconfirmed.
- Decide how much management you want. AfterZero’s announced loop includes resources, crafting, upgrades and camp work. The two released comparisons focus much more on narrative delivery than on maintaining equipment or a base.
- Check platform timing. Firewatch’s listed versions are Windows, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. AfterZero is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch in 2027. Road 96 is already released, but the current store page should be checked for the platform and edition you use.
- Set expectations for the unreleased game. Use the announced features as a target description, not as proof of final quality, performance or scope.
Why there are not more direct matches yet
The combination in AfterZero is unusually specific: a story-led single-player adventure, an upgradable off-road vehicle, frozen post-industrial exploration, resource scavenging, crafting, a survivor base, choices and a mystery involving an artificial intelligence. Most games that share one of those traits do not necessarily share the others.
Road 96 overlaps most strongly with the road-trip and decision structure. Firewatch overlaps most strongly with isolation, radio communication and environmental mystery. Calling either one a complete replacement would erase the differences that matter to a buyer. A useful shortlist can therefore be short when each entry answers a different interpretation of the same request.
Rank #4
- Moments of action, exploration, contemplative melancholy, human encounters and wacky situations.
- Set against a backdrop of authoritarian rule and oppression.
- A stunning visual style and soundtrack filled with 90s hits
- Thousands of routes through the game combined so each player can create their own unique stories.
What to monitor before AfterZero launches
Because the game is still announced rather than released, prospective players should watch for concrete updates in five areas:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Vehicle depth: whether the Old Grizzly has meaningful handling, damage, fuel or tool decisions, or mainly functions as a travel device.
- Survival pressure: how scavenging, frozen weather and resource scarcity affect route planning and moment-to-moment play.
- Camp progression: whether the Firewall is a light story hub or a substantial management system, and how the train-repair project fits into progression.
- Choice consequences: whether decisions alter missions, relationships, routes or endings, rather than only changing dialogue.
- World structure: how the announced open-world and linear-narrative descriptors coexist in the final campaign.
These are the details that will determine whether AfterZero is primarily a driving adventure with survival layers, a narrative game connected by vehicle travel, or a broader systems-driven expedition. Until launch information answers them, comparisons should remain feature-based rather than score-based.
Bottom line for different readers
- Best current overall match for a road-trip structure: Road 96.
- Best current match for story, atmosphere and exploration: Firewatch.
- Best match for vehicle upgrades, scavenging and frozen survival: AfterZero itself, but only as an announced 2027 game.
Road 96 is the practical first recommendation because it is released and shares the strongest structural idea: a dangerous journey shaped by encounters and decisions. Firewatch is the better second recommendation when the appeal is solitude, radio dialogue and mystery. Neither removes the need to wait for AfterZero if the defining attraction is driving an upgradeable vehicle through a frozen wasteland while supporting a survivor community.
