For most Windows 11 users with games in several stores, Playnite Fullscreen is the best alternative to Xbox mode. It combines Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox PC and other libraries in one controller-friendly interface. Steam Big Picture is the simpler choice for a mostly-Steam library, GOG GALAXY fits GOG-first users, and LaunchBox/Big Box is the specialist option for retro and emulation collections.
None of these applications is a perfect operating-system replacement for Xbox mode. They are launchers that can open full screen, start with Windows and work well from a sofa, while the underlying storefront clients may still be required to authenticate and start a game.
What Xbox mode does on Windows 11
Microsoft describes Xbox mode as a Windows feature that starts a gaming home app as a launcher and runs games and apps full screen. It is not simply a larger Xbox app window: the feature is intended to make a controller-led, console-style entry point part of the Windows experience.
Microsoft’s current documentation says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. Both the version requirement and market rollout can change, so check Microsoft’s Windows Gaming documentation on the PC you are configuring rather than assuming that every Windows 11 installation has the feature.

Third-party launchers can reproduce the useful parts—one library, full-screen navigation, controller operation and automatic startup—but they do not change Windows’ licensing, account or storefront rules. A game bought through Steam may still need Steam running; an Xbox PC title may still need the Xbox app or Microsoft services; and a game protected by another publisher’s launcher can still call that launcher at launch.

1. Playnite Fullscreen: the best all-round replacement
Playnite is the strongest default recommendation because it treats your collection as one library instead of making you choose a storefront before you can browse. Its official feature description lists integrations for Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox PC and more. The application is free and open source, and its fullscreen view is designed for gamepad navigation from a couch or television.
Why it works well for mixed libraries
- One searchable collection: games from different accounts can be browsed together, with artwork, metadata, categories and play status in one place.
- Controller-first fullscreen mode: Playnite Fullscreen removes the desktop-style window from the normal browsing path and presents a console-like grid and detail view.
- Flexible organization: filters, tags and custom categories are useful when the same library includes modern PC releases, older games and emulated titles.
- No software purchase: Playnite itself is free and open source, although the stores and games it launches can have their own costs and account requirements.
Set up Playnite as an Xbox-mode alternative
- Install Playnite on the Windows 11 account that will use the gaming PC. Keep the storefront clients already used by your games installed and signed in.
- Open Playnite’s library or integration settings and enable the stores you use. Sign in only when an integration requests it, and allow the import to finish before changing filters or categories.
- Review the imported list. Remove duplicate entries, hide installers or tools you do not want in the couch interface, and correct artwork or platform labels for games that were detected incorrectly.
- Switch to Playnite’s fullscreen view from its main interface. Use a keyboard or mouse for the initial configuration, then test navigation, game launch, returning to the library and shutting down the PC with the controller you intend to use.
- Configure Playnite to start with Windows if you want a console-like boot flow. Leave a desktop shortcut or a keyboard-accessible way back to the normal Windows desktop so maintenance and account sign-ins remain possible.
Important limitations
Playnite is a library manager, not a replacement for every publisher client. An imported game can still open Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Xbox app or another required service. If a store changes its sign-in flow or API, its integration may need updating or reauthentication. Treat the fullscreen screen as the front door to your collection, not as proof that the underlying stores have been removed.

2. Steam Big Picture: the easiest Steam-only choice
Valve describes Big Picture as a Steam mode designed for a television and game controller. It is the most straightforward option when nearly all of your games are in Steam because your library, downloads, controller settings and account are already in the same ecosystem. Valve documents support for Windows 10 or newer and official Microsoft Xbox controllers, so it runs on supported Windows 11 installations.

Use Big Picture as your main interface
- Install or update Steam and sign in to the account containing the games you want to play.
- Open Steam’s View menu and choose Big Picture Mode. The exact wording can move as Steam’s desktop client changes, but the mode is launched from Steam’s main navigation.
- Pair or connect the controller, then open Steam’s controller settings to confirm that button presses are detected and that the preferred layout is active.
- In Steam’s interface settings, enable the option that starts Steam in Big Picture mode if you want it to open directly into the couch interface.
- For games from another store, add a non-Steam shortcut only when that improves your workflow. The shortcut does not transfer ownership or remove the other store’s launcher; it simply gives you a tile in Steam.
Where Big Picture stops short
Big Picture is not a complete cross-store aggregator. It can display manually added shortcuts, but it does not provide Playnite’s broad, integration-based view of Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net and Xbox PC libraries. Choose it when consistency inside Steam matters more than having every storefront in one catalog.
3. GOG GALAXY: best for a GOG-centered collection
GOG GALAXY is a Windows launcher built around GOG games and account services. GOG says users can add games through official and community-created integrations, which makes GALAXY a possible secondary aggregator for some users. Integration coverage is not permanent: a community connector can stop working when a storefront changes its authentication or data access, so verify the specific stores you need before rebuilding your setup around it.
What GOG users retain
For GOG games, GOG says features such as automatic updates, cloud saves, cross-play and rollbacks remain available. Those features are tied to GOG titles and services; importing a game from another storefront does not automatically give it GOG’s distribution or support features.

- Install GALAXY, sign in to your GOG account and allow your owned GOG games to synchronize.
- Open the application’s integrations area and inspect the available official or community connections. Enable only the accounts you intend to use, then complete each sign-in flow.
- Wait for synchronization before judging the result. If a game is missing, check the account used for that storefront and whether its integration is currently supported.
- Use GALAXY’s controller or full-screen options if they meet your television setup; otherwise, launch GALAXY from Playnite and let Playnite provide the common couch interface.
4. LaunchBox and Big Box: the retro and emulation specialist
LaunchBox is best considered a retro-game and emulation library manager rather than the default modern PC-store replacement. Comparison documentation describes strong metadata tools and Big Box theme support, which are valuable when a collection contains hundreds or thousands of ROMs, arcade titles and older computer games that need custom artwork, platform names and emulator associations.

When LaunchBox makes sense
- You want platform-specific views for arcade, console and computer systems.
- You care about detailed metadata, box art, videos and themed navigation more than automatic modern-store integration.
- You are prepared to configure emulators, ROM folders, controller mappings and launch parameters.
- You want Big Box’s presentation for a dedicated retro cabinet or television PC.
What to verify before committing
Current pricing and the division between standard LaunchBox features and paid Big Box capabilities can change. Check the developer’s current licensing page before buying. Also confirm that the emulators and game files you plan to use are legally obtained and that each emulator supports your controller and display resolution.

How to get a Steam Deck-like launcher experience on Windows 11
A console-style experience depends on more than a fullscreen application. Configure the whole startup path deliberately so you can recover when a store asks for a password or an update interrupts the normal flow.
Choose the display and input hardware
- Use a television or monitor at the resolution and refresh rate your games can sustain. Set Windows scaling so text in occasional desktop dialogs remains readable from your seating position.
- Use an XInput-compatible PC game controller for the broadest compatibility with Windows games. A wired connection simplifies first-time setup; Bluetooth or a wireless adapter is more convenient after pairing is confirmed.
- Keep a keyboard and mouse available. You may need them for two-factor authentication, anti-cheat prompts, driver installation and storefront dialogs that do not accept gamepad input.
Set the startup order
- Install and sign in to the storefront clients that own your games.
- Set Playnite to start with Windows, or set Steam to open directly in Big Picture if you selected the Steam-only route.
- Restart the PC and observe the complete sequence. Note whether Windows shows a password prompt, a store update, a notification or a desktop window before the launcher appears.
- Resolve those interruptions before enabling any more aggressive automation. A stable desktop that opens the launcher is preferable to a shell that leaves you locked out when one client fails.
Decide whether to replace the Windows shell
Launching a game interface at sign-in is different from replacing Windows Explorer as the shell. Startup shortcuts and scheduled tasks are easier to undo and are safer for a general-purpose PC. A full shell replacement can hide the taskbar and desktop, but it also complicates updates, troubleshooting and access to recovery tools. Use it only on a dedicated machine, document how to restore Explorer, and keep a separate administrator account for maintenance.
Controller setup and common input problems
Controller is not detected
- Connect the controller before opening the launcher, then restart the launcher so it rescans devices.
- Test it in Windows’ game-controller panel. If Windows cannot see it, the issue is pairing, cable, battery or driver related rather than a launcher setting.
- For Steam, enable the appropriate controller support in Steam’s controller settings and check the per-game layout.
- For Playnite, test navigation in fullscreen and then test an actual game. Some titles accept XInput only after their own controller option is enabled.
Buttons work in menus but not in a game
The launcher and the game can use different input APIs. Close other remapping utilities, test the controller through the owning storefront, and check whether the game has separate keyboard, DirectInput and XInput choices. Avoid stacking multiple remappers unless a specific older game requires one.

Wireless input drops out
Move the adapter or PC away from crowded USB hubs, charge the controller, remove an old Bluetooth pairing and pair it again. If the controller works reliably by cable, keep the cable available for diagnosis; changing launchers will not fix a radio or power problem.

A game appears twice
Duplicates usually come from two integrations detecting the same installation or from a store version and a manually added shortcut. Keep the entry connected to the account that owns the game, hide the duplicate and avoid deleting files until you have confirmed which entry points to the real installation.
A game is missing
- Confirm that the owning storefront client is installed and signed in to the correct account.
- Run the launcher’s library import or synchronization again.
- Check filters, hidden games, platform categories and family-sharing visibility.
- If the storefront recently changed its sign-in or API behavior, look for an integration update or use a manual shortcut temporarily.
The launcher opens, but the game does not
Start the game once from its owning client. This can complete first-run prerequisites, create configuration files and expose an account or license prompt. Then try the launcher tile again. If the game still fails, troubleshoot the owning client, graphics driver, anti-cheat system or game installation rather than repeatedly reinstalling the front-end launcher.

Check whether the launcher is losing focus to a store update, notification or credential window. Disable nonessential startup overlays, allow the required client to finish updating, and test with one game before adding more automatic tasks. Keep a keyboard shortcut or Windows security screen available so a failed fullscreen session does not become a recovery problem.

Xbox mode is unavailable
Verify that the PC is running Windows 11 24H2 or later and that the feature is supported in your market. If either condition is not met, use Playnite Fullscreen, Steam Big Picture, GOG GALAXY or Big Box instead of trying to force an unavailable Windows feature.
Costs, licensing and maintenance
- Playnite: the application is free and open source. You still need accounts and purchases for the stores whose games you launch.
- Steam Big Picture: it is included with Steam; the cost is associated with games and any required hardware, not with a separate Big Picture license.
- GOG GALAXY: the launcher is available for GOG users, while games and services follow GOG’s account and purchase rules.
- LaunchBox/Big Box: confirm current pricing and premium-feature boundaries before purchase because they can change.
Plan for maintenance whichever launcher you choose. Storefront clients, integrations, controller firmware and Windows updates can all alter startup behavior. Export or note your categories and emulator paths, keep installers or recovery access available, and test the setup after major updates rather than waiting for a game-night failure.
Final recommendation
Choose Playnite Fullscreen when your Windows 11 library crosses several stores or includes Xbox PC titles alongside traditional PC storefronts. Choose Steam Big Picture when Steam is the center of your collection and you want the fewest moving parts. Choose GOG GALAXY when GOG services and purchases dominate, and choose LaunchBox/Big Box when retro platforms, emulators and custom metadata are the priority. In every case, keep the underlying storefront clients installed, test your controller before hiding the desktop, and provide a keyboard-based recovery path.
