Godot is the strongest engine to evaluate first for many solo developers starting a 2D game, particularly if commercial use, open licensing and predictable costs matter. Unity is a credible alternative if you already know it or want its broad ecosystem and established 2D toolset. GameMaker is worth considering when you prefer a specialized 2D workflow, but check its current official licensing and export terms before committing. No engine is best for every project: your experience, game scope and target platforms should decide.

Which engine should you use for a first 2D game?

Start by asking which option lets you make and test the smallest playable version of your game with the least friction. A familiar workflow can be more valuable than a feature you may never use; likewise, an engine that looks inexpensive at the start can become a poor fit if its commercial or platform terms conflict with your release plan.

For a new solo project without a strong preference, evaluate Godot first. Its official license page describes Godot as free and open source under the permissive MIT license, and its current 4.6 FAQ confirms that commercial use is permitted. Unity is a reasonable choice if you already work in it or specifically want its documented 2D workflows. GameMaker belongs on a focused 2D shortlist, but its current terms need to be checked directly before you rely on a particular price or platform export.

These are practical starting recommendations, not results from a controlled comparison. There is no measured development-time or performance ranking here that would establish one engine as universally faster or better.

How the three options differ

Engine Why a solo 2D developer might choose it Important decision point
Godot Commercial use is permitted under its MIT license; an open-source option for developers who value licensing and budget predictability. If you redistribute the engine, include the required Godot copyright and license notice. Confirm current export pathways for your target platforms.
Unity Its official documentation covers sprites, tilemaps, 2D physics and 2D lighting. It may suit developers already familiar with Unity or seeking its broader ecosystem. Unity Personal has eligibility conditions. Pro is listed from $2,310 per year on Unity’s plans page accessed in 2026. Closed-console development has additional requirements.
GameMaker A candidate for developers who prefer a specialized 2D workflow. Check GameMaker’s current official commercial licensing and export eligibility for your intended platforms; specific current terms are not established here.

This comparison is deliberately focused on decision points the engine makers’ materials establish. It does not rank editor speed, runtime performance, community size, learning curves or the number of available add-ons. Those qualities can matter, but they should be tested or verified for your own project rather than inferred from a label such as “2D-focused” or “broad ecosystem.”

Godot: the best default to evaluate first

Licensing and commercial use

Godot’s official license page says: “Godot Engine is free and open source software released under the permissive MIT license (also named Expat license).” Its 4.6 FAQ confirms commercial use is allowed. That makes it a strong first option if you want to sell your game without choosing an engine because of a revenue-based eligibility tier.

There is an attribution obligation when redistributing the engine: include the Godot copyright and license notice. That requirement concerns redistribution of the engine, not a reason to assume that you cannot commercially release a game made with it. Review the license page for the exact notice and any details applicable to your distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When it fits

  • You are beginning a 2D project and want to evaluate an engine with commercially usable, open licensing.
  • You value clearer budget predictability over a plan whose eligibility depends on business revenue or funding.
  • You are willing to confirm the export route for each platform you intend to support rather than assuming all targets have identical requirements.

Godot is a recommendation to try first, not a claim that it has the best workflow for every developer. If you already know another engine well, that experience may make it the more practical choice for your specific project.

Unity: capable for 2D, with terms to factor into the plan

What its 2D documentation establishes

Unity’s official 2D documentation lists workflows for sprites, tilemaps, 2D physics and 2D lighting. Those are meaningful building blocks for a 2D game, but their presence does not establish that Unity is superior to Godot for solo development. Your choice should depend on whether the tools and workflow fit the game you plan to make and the skills you already have.

Personal eligibility and the listed Pro price

Unity Personal is free only for eligible users under the revenue and funding threshold stated by Unity. The threshold is a condition, not a price, and eligibility should be checked against Unity’s current terms before you start or continue a commercial project. Unity’s plans page, accessed in 2026, lists Pro “from $2,310.00 /yr.” Treat that as a vendor-listed annual starting price that may change, not as a universal quote or as the eligibility threshold itself. The same page says Pro is required for businesses above the threshold.

Budget for the plan that will actually apply to you, not just the one you can begin with. If your business may cross Unity’s eligibility threshold, check the current terms and costs before relying on Personal for the full life of the project.

Closed-console releases need additional planning

Unity says that building for closed consoles requires an active Pro subscription or a platform-holder license key, as well as approval from the platform holder. Unity Personal alone does not provide the ordinary closed-console build pathway described by those requirements. A console release therefore involves both engine access requirements and platform-holder approval; do not treat an engine choice as a guarantee that you can publish on a particular console.

GameMaker: consider the workflow, verify the terms

GameMaker is a reasonable option to evaluate if you want a dedicated 2D-oriented workflow. That positioning can make it appealing to someone whose project and preferences are squarely focused on 2D, but it does not settle whether it is the right choice for your game.

Before selecting it, consult GameMaker’s own current pricing, commercial licensing and platform-export information. In particular, confirm that your intended release platform is supported under the terms available to you. Current specific pricing and platform eligibility have not been established here, so third-party price claims should not substitute for the official terms that apply to your project.

Choose by project, skills, budget and release platform

1. Account for what you already know

If you have built projects in one of these engines, that familiarity can reduce setup and learning friction. This is a decision principle, not a measured promise that a familiar engine will shorten development by a particular amount. If you are starting from zero, compare each candidate by making the same small prototype rather than trying to predict your productivity from feature lists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Work out the commercial terms before committing

  • Godot: commercial use is permitted under the MIT license; include its copyright and license notice when redistributing the engine.
  • Unity: confirm whether you qualify for Personal under Unity’s current revenue and funding conditions. If not, account for the applicable paid plan; the 2026 plans page lists Pro from $2,310 per year.
  • GameMaker: verify current official terms for your commercial use and platforms rather than assuming a price or export entitlement from a third-party comparison.

Make the cost comparison over the project’s likely life, not just the day you install an engine. For Unity, that means understanding whether your use qualifies for Personal and what plan would apply if it does not; the listed Pro starting price is $2,310 per year, subject to change. For Godot, the stated MIT license and permission for commercial use make the licensing picture more predictable, while still leaving the redistribution notice to handle. For GameMaker, get the current commercial terms directly before treating its cost as known.

3. Name your release targets now

Write down whether you intend to ship on desktop, web, mobile, or a closed console. Platform availability, export tools, plan requirements and approval processes can affect the decision as much as 2D authoring features. The specific closed-console requirements established for Unity are Pro or a platform-holder license key plus platform-holder approval. Do not infer equivalent requirements—or an absence of requirements—for Godot or GameMaker without checking their current official information.

Separate “the engine can make a build” from “I am eligible to publish on the platform.” Unity’s console information illustrates why: access to the build pathway involves Pro or a platform-holder key, while platform-holder approval is an additional requirement. That makes a console ambition a planning question to resolve early, not a box to check after the game is finished. For Godot and GameMaker, verify the actual current route with their official platform and licensing information; this comparison does not establish their equivalent console terms.

4. Match the workflow to the game

For a project that depends on tilemaps, sprites, 2D physics or lighting, Unity’s documentation confirms that it has workflows for those areas. If your priority is an open-source engine with commercially usable licensing, Godot is a natural first evaluation. If you specifically want a 2D-focused tool, put GameMaker in your prototype comparison, then validate its terms and exports. None of these facts determines which engine will feel easiest for your particular game.

Translate your game idea into a short requirements list before opening an editor. A tile-based level, for example, makes tilemap construction a relevant thing to evaluate; a design that depends on lighting or physics gives those workflows a reason to be part of your test. If you do not expect to use a capability, do not let its presence in a feature list outweigh the basics you will touch throughout development. The goal is not to collect the most features; it is to establish that the workflow supports your essential interactions and that the license and release route fit.

A practical way to compare them before committing

Use a small prototype to test the parts of your game that create the most uncertainty. Keep the scope identical across engines so you are comparing the workflow rather than three different versions of the project.

  1. Define a tiny playable slice. Choose one representative screen or level, one player action, one interaction, and the most important visual or physics behavior. Keep the exercise small enough that you can reach a playable result.
  2. Use the same requirements in each candidate. For example, if your game needs tile-based levels, test level construction; if it relies on lighting or physics, test those specific needs. Unity’s official docs establish that it offers 2D workflows for sprites, tilemaps, physics and lighting, but you should assess their fit in your own prototype.
  3. Note friction rather than guessing at future speed. Record where you get stuck, which parts are clear, and what you would need to learn next. Do not treat a short experiment as a benchmark of long-term development time or engine performance.
  4. Check commercial and export terms against your actual release plan. Confirm the applicable license or subscription, target-platform availability, and any approval or platform-holder requirements. For a Unity closed-console release, resolve its Pro-or-key and approval requirements before committing.
  5. Choose the option that clears both tests. The engine should let you build the game’s essential 2D interactions and fit your budget and intended distribution. If a platform or licensing question is unresolved, settle it before making that engine your production dependency.

To make the comparison fair, write down the same test tasks before trying the first engine. A useful small slice might ask you to create a representative screen, arrange the relevant objects, implement one interaction, and test the visual or physics behavior most central to your concept. If your proposed game needs a tilemap, include one; if it does not, a tilemap test will tell you little about the daily workflow you actually need.

Keep a simple scorecard with three categories: workflow fit (could you make the essential slice?), friction (what was confusing or required extra learning?), and release fit (are cost, licensing and platform requirements clear?). You do not need to assign artificial numerical scores. Short notes make differences visible without pretending that a brief trial predicts the entire project or provides a performance benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a stopping point for the prototype as well. The goal is to answer specific uncertainties, not to build three versions of the full game. Once an engine can support the core 2D interactions and the terms for your likely release are understood, further switching may add work without resolving an important question. Conversely, if a key target platform or commercial condition remains unclear, do not confuse a successful desktop prototype with confirmation that the intended release plan is viable.

Common selection mistakes

  • Choosing by reputation alone. A broad ecosystem or a 2D-focused label does not prove that a specific workflow is right for your game.
  • Assuming “free” means unconditional. Godot’s MIT licensing permits commercial use but has a notice requirement when redistributing the engine. Unity Personal is free only for eligible users under Unity’s stated conditions.
  • Planning a console release as if it were a standard export. Unity’s closed-console pathway includes a subscription or platform-holder key and approval. Check the specific process for any other engine and target rather than assuming it matches.
  • Relying on stale pricing or export claims. Terms and prices change. Use the engine maker’s current official pages for the region, plan and platform you need, especially before a commercial release.
  • Reading comparison recommendations as measured evidence. The recommendation to try Godot first is editorial guidance based on the stated licensing and workflow considerations, not the outcome of controlled side-by-side development tests.
  • Choosing before naming the release platform. A desktop prototype may not resolve whether the eventual web, mobile or console plan is covered by the terms you need. Put your likely targets on the checklist early and verify each one.
  • Confusing an engine capability with a fit. Documentation that lists sprites, tilemaps, physics and lighting establishes that Unity has those workflows; it does not say that each is necessary for your game or that they make Unity the best choice for you.

What to verify before release

Engine terms, prices, versions and platform export requirements can change. Before you commit money or prepare a release, review the applicable official license and pricing pages, confirm your commercial eligibility, and check the current export and approval pathway for each target platform. This is especially important for Unity plans and closed-console development, and for current GameMaker and Godot platform-specific terms.

For Unity, distinguish the Personal eligibility conditions from the paid-plan price, and remember that the $2,310-per-year Pro figure is the starting price listed on its plans page accessed in 2026, not a guaranteed future quote. For Godot, review the MIT license and keep the required copyright and license notice in mind if redistributing the engine. For GameMaker, do not rely on a third-party summary where its own current commercial and export terms can settle the question. Check again when you are preparing the actual release, since pricing and platform requirements can change during a project.

Can I sell a game made with Godot?

Yes. Godot’s official license information and 4.6 FAQ say commercial use is permitted. If you redistribute the engine, include the required Godot copyright and license notice. Consult the current license page for the precise notice and the details that apply to your distribution.

Is Unity Personal free for every solo developer?

No. Unity Personal is free only for eligible users under the revenue and funding conditions stated by Unity. Check the current eligibility terms for your circumstances. If you are not eligible, or your business exceeds the stated threshold, plan for the applicable paid option; Unity’s plans page accessed in 2026 lists Pro from $2,310 per year.

Can I use Unity Personal to build for a closed console?

Unity says a closed-console build requires an active Pro subscription or a platform-holder license key, plus platform-holder approval. Unity Personal alone does not provide the ordinary pathway described by those requirements. Confirm the current details with Unity and the relevant platform holder before making a console release part of your plan.

Should I choose Unity, Godot or GameMaker—and which language should I use?

Choose the engine by balancing your existing familiarity, the 2D workflow your project needs, commercial terms and target platforms. The facts established here do not settle a language comparison or specify which language is best for each engine, so do not choose based on an unsupported language ranking. Check each engine’s current official documentation for its supported development workflow, then try a small representative prototype.

Is GameMaker cheaper or better for 2D?

The available current evidence does not establish a specific GameMaker price, commercial entitlement or platform-export eligibility, so it would be misleading to declare it cheaper. It is a candidate if you prefer its specialized 2D workflow. Check GameMaker’s official pricing, licensing and export information for your intended use and platforms before deciding.

Which engine is fastest for making a solo 2D game?

There is no controlled side-by-side development-time or performance comparison here that supports a universal ranking. Your own familiarity and the particular tasks in your game matter. A small, identical prototype in each candidate can reveal workflow friction, but it should not be treated as a long-term speed benchmark.
