Unreal Engine 5 is the strongest default for a high-fidelity, console-focused Soulslike action RPG. Its integrated 3D physics, animation, gameplay framework, ability system, networking, profiling, and source access fit the genre’s demanding combat and boss encounters. Unity 6 is the better alternative for teams that prioritize C# productivity, broad platform deployment, a large asset ecosystem, or managed multiplayer services. Godot 4 is a credible choice for teams that value open-source control and minimal licensing cost, provided they validate console support and high-end production requirements early.

The right choice depends less on a feature checklist than on your target visual quality, combat-animation workflow, platforms, team skills, multiplayer needs, and tolerance for royalties or seat fees.

Quick verdict: which engine should you choose?

Engine Best fit Main strengths for a Soulslike Important qualification
Unreal Engine 5 High-fidelity PC and console action RPGs Integrated gameplay framework, Chaos Physics, animation tooling, Gameplay Ability System, networking, profiling, and source access Free below $1 million in lifetime gross product revenue, then a 5% royalty on qualifying revenue under Epic’s stated terms
Unity 6 Multiplatform projects and C#-focused teams 20-plus platform targets, C# workflow, large asset ecosystem, animation and performance tools, Multiplayer Center, and managed multiplayer services Commercial thresholds and seat pricing change; the Runtime Fee was removed and current terms use Personal, Pro, and Enterprise tiers
Godot 4 Indie teams seeking open-source control and low tool cost MIT licensing, 3D character and ragdoll physics, navigation meshes, dynamic obstacle avoidance, ENet/RPC multiplayer, and desktop, mobile, and web exports Console support is not covered by the general stable feature list and must be verified for your target hardware and publishing route

A 2025 Big Game Engines Report from VG Insights and InvestGame estimated the 2024 unit-sold mix of Souls-like games at approximately 67% Unreal, 10% Unity, 0% Godot, and 23% other engines. That is market context, not proof that one engine produces better combat or sales.

What a Soulslike engine must handle

A Soulslike is unusually sensitive to timing and systemic consistency. The engine has to keep player input, animation, collision, stamina, damage, hit reactions, invulnerability windows, sound, camera movement, and visual effects synchronized. A small frame-pacing hitch during a parry or dodge can feel like a design flaw even when the underlying logic is correct.

Animation state machines and root motion

Attacks, dodges, guard breaks, hit reactions, executions, climbing, and boss phases all require explicit animation states and transitions. Decide early whether locomotion and attacks use root motion, in-place animation with code-driven movement, or a hybrid. Root motion can make weapon arcs and evasive movement visually precise, while code-driven movement simplifies network reconciliation and gameplay tuning. Whichever approach you choose, the engine should let designers inspect transition conditions, blend timing, animation notifies, and interrupt rules without rewriting the combat controller.

Reliable hit detection and responsiveness

Soulslike combat commonly uses weapon traces, hurt volumes, contact events, or a combination. You need deterministic rules for when a hitbox activates, how many times a target can be struck, which layers block or parry, and how invulnerability frames interact with damage. The engine’s physics and profiling tools matter because a generous-looking animation is useless if collision queries happen late or on inconsistent frames.

Enemy navigation and boss logic

Regular enemies need navigation around corners, doorways, stairs, moving obstacles, and combat arenas. Bosses add phase transitions, telegraphs, arena constraints, target selection, and attacks that may temporarily override ordinary navigation. Navigation meshes, dynamic obstacle avoidance, behavior tools, animation events, and a clear gameplay state model are more valuable than a long list of visual effects.

Streaming, frame pacing, and profiling

Large areas often combine connected zones, shortcuts, elevators, hidden rooms, and boss arenas. Streaming must avoid visible stalls while preserving enemy state and quest logic. Profile CPU, GPU, memory, animation evaluation, physics, and shader compilation on the weakest target hardware; an editor frame rate is not evidence of console performance.

Multiplayer and platform access

If you plan co-op, invasions, or asynchronous features, replication must be designed alongside combat rather than added after the single-player prototype. Console development also depends on access to platform SDKs, certification requirements, input standards, crash reporting, and an approved publishing path. An engine can support a feature technically while your team still lacks the required platform agreements.

Unreal Engine 5: the best default for high-end Soulslikes

Unreal Engine 5 is the most complete choice when your goal is a visually ambitious, console-oriented action RPG and you can staff an Unreal workflow. Epic’s documented stack covers Chaos Physics, animation workflows, gameplay frameworks, Gameplay Ability System, networking, multiplayer systems, and access to engine source code.

Why its systems map well to the genre

Chaos Physics provides rigid-body dynamics, collision responses, constraints, networked physics, and destruction. Those capabilities can support weapon and character collision, breakable arena objects, ragdolls, physics-driven hit reactions, and synchronized world interactions. You still need to choose carefully which interactions are simulated: using full physical simulation for every attack can make combat unpredictable, whereas scripted traces with selective physics often preserve the intentional feel expected from a Soulslike.

Unreal’s Gameplay Framework supplies Actors, Controllers, Game Mode, input, timers, user interfaces, and cameras. These are natural places to separate player input, character state, encounter rules, checkpoint logic, and camera behavior. The Gameplay Ability System is designed for abilities and attributes, making it a useful foundation for stamina, health, poise, buffs, debuffs, weapon states, cooldowns, and replicated attacks. It is not a finished Soulslike combat system; your team must still author the timing windows, animation events, hit reactions, and balance rules.

Animation and combat implementation

Use animation state machines for locomotion and reaction states, then isolate attack and ability decisions so they can be interrupted or queued according to your design. Root-motion attacks can keep a greatsword swing or lunge aligned with authored animation. For networked play, test reconciliation, late packets, and authority rules before creating a large move set. Build a small slice with one weapon, one dodge, one parry, one ordinary enemy, and one boss phase, then measure input-to-impact latency and animation transition behavior on target hardware.

World scale and performance

Unreal is suited to dense environments with dynamic lighting, physics props, and streaming zones, but high-end features can consume memory and GPU time quickly. Establish a frame-time budget per platform, compile and cache shaders in continuous integration, and profile packaged builds rather than relying on editor statistics. Streaming boundaries should be tested while sprinting, dying, respawning, and returning through a shortcut, because those transitions often expose hidden loading work.

Licensing and revenue threshold

Epic’s licensing page states that game developers can use Unreal without an engine royalty below $1 million in lifetime gross product revenue. Under the stated terms, “all lifetime gross revenue above $1M that is directly attributable to the UE product” is subject to a 5% royalty. The same page notes that revenue from the Epic Games Store is royalty-free under those terms. Confirm the current agreement for your product, distribution channels, and any custom arrangements before release; the threshold is lifetime gross product revenue, not annual profit.

When Unreal is the wrong choice

  • Your team has no C++ or Unreal gameplay experience and cannot budget time for a vertical-slice learning period.
  • Your target is primarily low-end mobile or web and the project’s visual requirements do not justify a heavyweight 3D stack.
  • You need an unusually small, source-light toolchain and are prepared to build or integrate more systems yourself.

Unity 6: the strongest alternative for C# and multiplatform teams

Unity 6 is a compelling choice when deployment breadth, C# productivity, and a mature asset ecosystem matter more than using an integrated high-end stack out of the box. Unity describes support for 2D and 3D development across more than 20 platforms, with animation, physics, performance tooling, and multiplayer workflows.

Combat and animation workflow

Unity’s component-based architecture makes it straightforward to keep player input, stamina, equipment, hit volumes, and status effects in separate systems. Animation state machines, blend trees, animation events, and root-motion controls can support the same locomotion and attack patterns required by the genre. The trade-off is architectural responsibility: your team must define conventions for gameplay state, physics queries, animation authority, and data ownership so a large project does not become a collection of tightly coupled components.

For responsive melee, keep attack timing data separate from presentation. Store startup, active, recovery, damage, stagger, stamina cost, and invulnerability windows in data assets or equivalent configuration. Drive animation and effects from that data, then instrument the result with frame markers. This lets designers tune a weapon without duplicating numbers in scripts, clips, and networking code.

Multiplayer services in Unity 6

Unity 6 adds Multiplayer Center, Multiplayer Widgets, Multiplayer Play Mode, and dedicated-server workflows. Its service lineup includes Lobby, Relay, Matchmaker, and Multiplay Hosting. These tools can reduce the amount of account, session, and server plumbing your team writes, but they do not solve combat authority, anti-cheat, lag compensation, or persistence design. Test a co-op boss encounter with realistic latency before committing to a service architecture.

Platform reach and production workflow

Unity’s broad platform coverage is useful when the same game must ship on PC, consoles, handheld devices, mobile, or web. Asset import, package-based development, and a large third-party ecosystem can accelerate prototyping. They also introduce risks: package version conflicts, inconsistent quality, licensing changes, and long-term maintenance. Lock package versions, review dependencies, and keep a reproducible build pipeline from the first milestone.

Current commercial model

Unity’s October 2024 terms update removed the Runtime Fee. The announcement lists Unity Personal at $0–$200,000 in annual company revenue or funding, Unity Pro at $200,001–$24,999,999, and Enterprise at $25,000,000 or more. These thresholds and prices are volatile, so verify the current terms before signing a contract or budgeting a multi-year production. The relevant metric is company revenue or funding for the stated tier, not the game’s sales alone.

When Unity is the better decision

  • Your programmers are substantially faster in C# than in C++ and the project benefits from rapid iteration.
  • You need to target many platforms or maintain a common codebase across desktop, console, mobile, and web.
  • You want integrated lobby, relay, matchmaking, and hosting options and have a team ready to own the gameplay networking layer.
  • Your art pipeline depends on a broad ecosystem of packages, tools, and contractors familiar with Unity.

What Godot can cover

Godot’s character bodies and physics nodes can support player movement, dodge volumes, projectile interactions, ragdolls, and environmental hazards. Navigation meshes and dynamic obstacle avoidance provide the basic pieces for enemy pursuit and arena movement. ENet and RPC replication can underpin a co-op prototype or asynchronous feature, provided you implement authority, prediction, reconciliation, security, and persistence deliberately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For combat, keep the core rules explicit: define attack windows, hit layers, invulnerability, stagger, and resource costs in scripts or data structures; use animation signals or notifies to activate collision; and record combat events for debugging. This approach can produce a responsive game, but your team may need to build more editor tooling and reusable frameworks than it would in a larger commercial engine.

Licensing

Godot Engine is free and open-source software released under the permissive MIT license. Commercial use is allowed. When redistributing the engine, you must include the required copyright notice and license statement. The license does not remove the practical costs of art, engineering, certification, hosting, or console porting.

Console and high-end production qualification

Godot’s general feature list does not establish support for every console SDK or certification path. Confirm the exact hardware, export pipeline, middleware, performance targets, and publisher support available to your team before committing. For a PC-first or web-first project with a controlled scope, Godot can be a sensible risk-reduction choice. For a simultaneous high-end console launch, make console validation a pre-production gate rather than a late porting task.

How to choose for your team and project

Choose Unreal Engine 5 if these conditions are true

  1. Your visual target includes dense environments, advanced lighting, detailed materials, destruction, or physics-driven set pieces.
  2. The game is intended for current-generation consoles or high-end PC and you can profile on those targets throughout production.
  3. Your programmers can adopt C++ and Unreal’s gameplay architecture, or you can hire experienced Unreal developers.
  4. Combat uses many abilities, attributes, buffs, debuffs, replicated states, or boss phases that benefit from a shared gameplay framework.
  5. You accept the possibility of a 5% royalty on qualifying lifetime gross revenue above the stated threshold.

Choose Unity 6 if these conditions are true

  1. C# iteration speed and existing team expertise are more valuable than an integrated high-end stack.
  2. You need a broad deployment matrix, including mobile, web, desktop, and consoles.
  3. Your production depends on third-party assets, contractors, or internal tools already built for Unity.
  4. You want Unity’s multiplayer services and dedicated-server workflows as a starting point.
  5. You can budget for the applicable seat-based tier and monitor changes to Unity’s commercial terms.

Choose Godot 4 if these conditions are true

  1. Open-source licensing, source control, and independence from a commercial vendor are strategic priorities.
  2. The project is PC-first, web-first, or otherwise has a verified export path that matches your release plan.
  3. Your team is comfortable creating custom editor tools, combat frameworks, diagnostics, and pipeline integrations.
  4. The world and visual target are scoped so that you can validate memory, streaming, and frame pacing without relying on unproven features.
  5. You are prepared to confirm console support, SDK access, and certification assistance before production expands.

A practical engine-selection test

Do not choose from screenshots or a blank project. Build the same vertical slice in each finalist, using identical design targets and a fixed time box. The slice should include one playable character, two weapons with different reach and recovery, a dodge with invulnerability, a parry or guard response, one ordinary enemy, one multi-phase boss, a checkpoint and respawn loop, a shortcut or streamed transition, and a four-player network test if multiplayer is planned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define acceptance metrics. Set maximum input-to-action latency, target frame time, memory ceiling, load-time budget, animation transition requirements, and network tolerance before implementation.
  2. Implement combat data first. Keep stamina costs, damage, poise or stagger, hit windows, recovery, and invulnerability in editable data rather than scattering values through scripts.
  3. Test failure states. Interrupt attacks, die during a boss transition, respawn while enemies are active, change equipment mid-animation, and repeat the same hit at different frame rates.
  4. Profile packaged builds. Measure on the weakest planned platform, not only on a development workstation. Record CPU, GPU, memory, animation, physics, and streaming costs.
  5. Run a production rehearsal. Import a final-format character, create a complete enemy variant, produce a boss phase, submit a console or platform build where possible, and document every manual step.
  6. Score the unglamorous work. Include build times, crash diagnosis, source control conflicts, asset reimport behavior, automated testing, team onboarding, and the cost of hiring specialists.

The winner is the engine that meets the acceptance metrics with the least irreversible custom infrastructure, not necessarily the one with the most impressive demo.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Picking by graphics alone

High-fidelity rendering cannot compensate for weak input timing, poor animation transitions, or unstable frame pacing. Prototype the combat loop before investing in environment art.

Adding multiplayer after single-player combat is finished

Late networking often forces a rewrite of authority, hit validation, animation ownership, and state replication. Decide which events are authoritative and test latency during the first boss prototype.

Leaving console validation until the end

Platform SDK access, memory limits, certification rules, controller behavior, and storefront requirements can change architecture. Confirm the route to each target console before building platform-specific assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring licensing details

Royalties, revenue or funding thresholds, seat requirements, marketplace terms, and license notices affect forecasts. Record the agreement and the date checked, then revisit it before launch and when distribution changes.

Building one giant combat script

Separate input, locomotion, attack data, collision, resources, status effects, animation presentation, audio, camera, and networking. Modular systems make balance changes and debugging safer across dozens of weapons and enemies.

Final recommendation by project profile

For a studio pursuing a high-fidelity Soulslike on PC and consoles, start with Unreal Engine 5 and validate one complete combat slice before production. Its Chaos Physics, Gameplay Framework, Gameplay Ability System, networking, and source access provide the most integrated foundation in the documented options.

For a team whose advantage is C# expertise, multiplatform delivery, or an existing Unity pipeline, Unity 6 is a sound choice. Its broad platform support and multiplayer services can shorten infrastructure work, while the team retains responsibility for combat architecture and performance discipline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an indie team making a focused PC, desktop, mobile, or web Soulslike and prioritizing open-source control, Godot 4 is viable. Treat console deployment and high-end performance as explicit validation milestones rather than assumptions. The engine can provide the core physics, navigation, and networking pieces, but the team may need to create more production tooling itself.
