For Frosthaven on PC, keep your monitor’s native resolution and use the largest comfortable UI/text scale first; those choices preserve card and menu clarity. Start with the Default or High preset, then reduce shadows, ambient occlusion, effects and post-processing in that order if frame pacing is uneven. If an upscaler or render-scale control is available, use Quality before Balanced, and cap the frame rate to a level your system can hold consistently.
That approach fits Frosthaven’s card-heavy, turn-based interface better than lowering output resolution immediately. The game’s official 1.0 PC launch is scheduled for October 15, 2026, and the developers say the release includes UI improvements and optimization work intended to make it run smoother. No official benchmark publishes FPS gains for individual settings, so the exact result depends on your hardware, display and scene.
What the official 1.0 release means for performance
Frosthaven is a PC digital adaptation of the board game, presented by its official product page as a cooperative, turn-based tactical RPG with card-based action selection. The full 1.0 PC release is announced for October 15, 2026. The 1.0 announcement describes improved UI displays and optimization work, while the official Steam 1.0 notes say that “We made a number of optimizations that help the game run smoother.”

Those statements establish the direction of the release, not a guaranteed frame rate for a particular graphics card. The published material does not provide a Frosthaven-specific FPS chart, GPU-tier table or measured performance delta for each setting. Treat the profiles below as a disciplined starting point rather than a promise of a particular number.

Recommended starting profile
Apply this profile before chasing individual options. It protects the information you need to read while leaving the largest performance reductions for settings that usually affect lighting and effects rather than text.
| Setting | Starting choice | Why it is the starting choice |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | Monitor native resolution | Keeps card text, tooltips and interface edges sharp. |
| UI or text scale | Largest comfortable value | Readable cards and menus matter more than small visual gains from a lower scale. |
| Quality preset | Default or High | Provides a sensible baseline before targeted reductions. |
| Shadows | Reduce first when frame pacing is poor | Usually lowers lighting workload without changing the words on cards. |
| Ambient occlusion | Reduce after shadows | Trims depth shading while preserving the game’s core interface. |
| Effects | Reduce after ambient occlusion | Can help during animated attacks and other busy moments. |
| Post-processing | Reduce after effects | May improve consistency, but inspect small text after changing it. |
| Upscaler or render scale | Quality, if the option exists | Attempts to reduce GPU load while retaining more detail than Balanced. |
| Frame-rate limit | 60 FPS on a 60 Hz display, or a lower sustainable cap | A stable frame time feels better than an uncapped rate that repeatedly falls. |
Why resolution and UI scale come before visual quality
Frosthaven asks you to read cards, inspect tooltips and navigate menus repeatedly. Lowering the output resolution forces the game to draw the entire interface on a smaller pixel grid, so type and thin borders can become soft even when the average FPS rises. Native resolution keeps those elements aligned with the monitor’s physical pixels.
UI or text scale solves a different problem. A larger scale increases the size of interface elements without asking the GPU to render the whole scene at a lower output resolution. Use the largest setting that lets you read card text at your normal seating distance. If the game separates HUD scale, card scale and text scale, enlarge the text-related controls first and avoid shrinking cards merely to fit more of the board on screen.
When a lower resolution is unavoidable—for example, if the system cannot sustain a chosen frame cap even after targeted reductions—test the result in card inspection and outpost screens, not only in a quiet board view. A setting that looks acceptable during movement can make rules text and tooltips uncomfortable to read.
Step-by-step setup procedure
- Open Frosthaven’s video or graphics menu. Record the current values or take a screenshot so you can undo a change.
- Select the monitor’s native resolution. Do not begin by lowering output resolution. Confirm that the game is using the intended display and refresh rate.
- Set UI or text scale to the largest comfortable value. Check a card and a tooltip immediately; a scale that fits the board but requires squinting is too small.
- Choose Default or High quality. Start from a known baseline instead of mixing several unknown values at once.
- Set a frame-rate cap. Use 60 FPS for a 60 Hz display. If your system cannot hold 60 consistently, choose the lower cap it can sustain without repeated drops.
- Play a representative scenario. Check a zoomed board view, inspect several cards, open tooltips and visit the outpost UI. Note both smoothness and text clarity.
- Lower shadows one step. Repeat the same scenario and compare frame-time consistency, not only the highest FPS shown by a counter.
- Lower ambient occlusion if needed. Retest the same locations and menus.
- Lower effects, then post-processing. Change only one option between tests so you know which trade-off helped.
- If an upscaler or render-scale control is available, select Quality. Recheck small card type and menu labels. Move to Balanced only when Quality cannot hold your target cap and the text remains acceptable.
- Keep the best readable profile. Restore the previous value if a change improves an FPS counter but makes cards or tooltips visibly blurry.
How each setting trades clarity for performance
The useful question is not simply “Which option gives the most FPS?” It is “Which option reduces GPU work without damaging information I must read?” The table summarizes the expected trade-offs. Frosthaven-specific measured gains are not published, so the performance column describes the direction of the trade rather than a numeric promise.

| Option | Text and UI sharpness | Frame-time stability | GPU-load effect | Most visible in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native resolution | Best | Neutral to demanding | Higher than a lower output resolution | Everything, especially cards and menus |
| UI/text scale | Larger is easier to read; it does not substitute for native output resolution | Usually neutral | Usually small compared with scene rendering | Cards, tooltips and menus |
| Shadows | Normally unchanged | Often improves when lighting is a bottleneck | Reduces shadow-map and lighting work | Board scenery and character areas |
| Ambient occlusion | Normally unchanged | Can improve in scenes with many shaded surfaces | Reduces contact-shadow calculations | Board geometry and objects near characters |
| Effects | Card text is normally unchanged | Most helpful during animated attacks or other bursts | Reduces particles and animated visual work | Combat effects and ability animations |
| Post-processing | Can soften edges or small details at lower values | May reduce spikes caused by screen-space effects | Reduces screen-space and finishing passes | Whole scene, especially during transitions and effects |
| Upscaler: Quality | Usually the clearest scaled mode | Can improve consistency if the GPU is the limit | Renders internally below output resolution | Board detail, card edges and fine type |
| Upscaler: Balanced | More risk of soft small type | Can provide additional headroom | Lower internal resolution than Quality | Fine details and distant scenery |
| Output resolution reduction | Lowest clarity of the listed approaches | Can help substantially when resolution is the bottleneck | Reduces all rendered pixels | Entire image, including interface |
Shadows
Shadows are the first targeted reduction because they can consume considerable rendering work while leaving card wording and menu labels intact. Lower them one step rather than jumping straight to the minimum. If the board still feels uneven, continue with ambient occlusion before sacrificing resolution.
Ambient occlusion
Ambient occlusion adds small contact-darkening effects around objects and surfaces. Reducing it usually changes depth cues on the board rather than the interface. It is a logical second cut when shadows alone do not produce stable frame times.
Effects
Effects settings matter most during animated attacks, ability use and other moments with many particles or visual bursts. A lower value can make those moments more consistent while leaving static card text intact. Judge it in an active encounter, not while the camera is idle.
Post-processing
Post-processing can include screen-space and image-finishing effects. Lowering it may remove frame-time spikes, but it can also make edges or fine details look less defined. After changing it, open a card and a tooltip at your normal zoom level; restore the previous value if type becomes harder to parse.
Upscaling and render scale
Some PC releases expose an upscaler or a render-scale slider; use these controls only if Frosthaven provides them in your build. Quality is the appropriate first mode when readable text is a priority. Balanced can be a fallback when the system cannot hold its target cap, but inspect card text after every change because aggressive internal scaling can soften small lettering.

Frame-rate caps and frame pacing
A frame-rate cap prevents the GPU from rendering as fast as possible when that extra output is not useful to the display. For a 60 Hz monitor, 60 FPS is the straightforward target. If the game repeatedly dips below 60, a lower cap that remains steady can feel smoother than an uncapped result that oscillates between high and low values.
Choose the cap from observed consistency in a representative scenario. A menu may run easily while a busy encounter stresses the system. If Frosthaven offers separate display-mode choices, use the mode that behaves reliably on your monitor and avoids unexpected resolution switching. Do not claim that a specific cap is universally optimal: refresh rate, synchronization settings and hardware all change the result.
How to test a profile properly
Use the same sequence after every meaningful change. Consistent testing is more useful than a single peak number.
- Zoomed board view: verify that terrain, character outlines and small labels remain clear.
- Card inspection: read ability names, action text and icons at the scale you normally use.
- Tooltip checks: open rules and status explanations; these often reveal softness sooner than large headings.
- Active animation: trigger or observe a combat action with effects on screen to expose frame-time spikes.
- Outpost UI: move through the outpost interface and confirm that menus remain responsive and legible.
- Repeatability: run the same route or scenario segment after each one-setting change. Record whether the result is smoother, blurrier, or unchanged.
Watch for consistent frame delivery rather than trusting an isolated average. Frosthaven is turn-based, so a very high peak FPS is less valuable than avoiding distracting pauses while selecting cards, resolving actions or opening an information panel.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game feels uneven even though the FPS number is high
Use a frame-rate cap at a level the system can sustain, then retest an active encounter. Reduce shadows, ambient occlusion, effects and post-processing one at a time. An uncapped counter can hide repeated frame-time spikes; stability is the goal.

Card text is blurry after changing performance settings
Restore native output resolution first. If an upscaler is enabled, return to Quality or disable it temporarily to identify whether internal scaling caused the softness. Keep the larger UI/text scale, and check card inspection and tooltips rather than judging only the board.
Menus are readable, but combat effects cause slowdowns
Lower Effects before changing resolution. If spikes remain, reduce post-processing and retest the same animation-heavy action. This targets transient visual workload while preserving the interface.
The board looks acceptable, but tooltips are too small
Increase the UI or text scale. Do not compensate by lowering output resolution; that makes every interface element softer. If the largest scale does not fit comfortably, adjust your viewing distance or display scaling outside the game only after confirming that Frosthaven’s own text controls are at their maximum.
Lowering several options made the game look flat without fixing stutter
Undo the changes and isolate the bottleneck. Restore one setting at a time, keep the native resolution, and test shadows first, followed by ambient occlusion, effects and post-processing. If none of those changes affects the problem, the limitation may not be a graphics-quality setting; use a conservative frame cap and check for background workloads or display-mode issues.

Stable play matters more than visual detail
Keep native resolution and text scale, set a sustainable cap, then lower shadows, ambient occlusion and effects. Use Balanced upscaling only if Quality cannot maintain the chosen cap and card text remains readable in direct inspection.
The system is clearly GPU-limited
Prioritize reductions that lower rendered scene work: shadows, ambient occlusion, effects and post-processing. Quality upscaling can provide additional headroom. Lower output resolution is the last major clarity trade-off, and it should be accepted only after checking cards, tooltips and menus.
The system is already smooth but text is uncomfortable
Leave graphics quality alone and increase UI/text scale. Native resolution and a readable interface are more valuable here than pursuing an uncapped frame rate that Frosthaven’s turn-based structure does not require.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Lowering resolution first: this sacrifices every pixel of the interface before you know whether lighting or effects are the actual bottleneck.
- Changing multiple options together: you cannot tell which trade-off helped, making it harder to recover a clear profile.
- Testing only in menus: menus do not reproduce the load of an animated encounter.
- Judging only by average FPS: uneven frame times can feel worse than a lower but steady cap.
- Assuming an upscaler is free clarity: Quality and Balanced can look materially different on small type.
- Using a tiny UI to show more board area: card-heavy play depends on readable action text and tooltips.
- Treating published optimization notes as a benchmark: the 1.0 notes report smoother operation in general, not a guaranteed FPS increase for a particular setting or GPU.
A practical decision order
When Frosthaven is smooth and readable, stop tuning. If it is readable but not smooth, keep native resolution and text scale, cap the frame rate, then reduce shadows, ambient occlusion, effects and post-processing in that order. If it is smooth but blurry, restore native resolution or a higher-quality upscaler and increase the UI/text scale. If neither profile is acceptable, choose the clearest sustainable combination and recognize that no official Frosthaven-specific benchmark establishes a more exact universal answer.
