For most Windows users, start with the built-in Clock app. It combines recurring alarms, one-off timers and Focus sessions in one place. If you need custom Pomodoro sequences, Pomro is a focused third-party alternative. If the real problem is that your PC sleeps before a timer can notify you, PowerToys Awake can help keep the session running—but it is a power-management utility, not an alarm app.
The important distinction is what each tool actually does: an alarm fires at a scheduled clock time, a timer counts down a bounded task, and a focus session combines a work interval with interruption controls. The recommendations below are based on documented features, not a controlled reliability, accessibility, battery-use or productivity test.
Quick recommendations
| What you need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Alarms, timers and focus in one Windows app | Windows Clock | Built in, supports alarms and timers, and adds Focus sessions with Do Not Disturb and optional task or audio integrations. |
| Customizable Pomodoro work-and-break cycles | Pomro | Its publisher describes saved sequences, three presets, local storage, offline operation and no ads. |
| To prevent the PC from sleeping during a session | PowerToys Awake | Keeps Windows awake for a chosen duration or until an expiration time; it does not replace an alarm or focus timer. |
Use the first row unless you have a specific reason to add another utility. A third-party timer cannot compensate for a sleeping or muted computer, and Awake cannot make an alarm appear on a locked screen.

Alarm: a scheduled event
An alarm is tied to a time of day, such as 7:00 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. Use one when the event matters more than the length of the preceding task: waking up, taking a break, joining a meeting or starting an evening shutdown routine. Repeating schedules make an alarm useful for daily or weekday habits.

Timer: a bounded countdown
A timer starts from a duration you choose, such as 15 minutes for email or 50 minutes for writing. It is better than an alarm when you are beginning now and only need a signal when the interval ends. Windows Clock lets you use presets or create a timer.
Focus session: a work block plus interruption controls
A Focus session is designed for a sustained work period. You choose a session length and whether to include breaks. The timer remains visible, Do Not Disturb turns on automatically, and Clock can hide taskbar badges and app flashing. You can optionally select a task from Microsoft To Do and connect an audio service for music, playlists or podcasts. These features control the session environment; the documentation does not establish that they improve productivity.
Windows Clock: the best first stop
Microsoft documents Clock alarms and timers for Windows 11 and Windows 10. The app can continue to run alarms and timers while its window is closed or the device is locked, but notifications require the computer itself to remain awake. A sleeping laptop is not equivalent to a locked laptop.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Set an alarm
- Open Clock from the Windows Start menu.
- Open the Alarm section.
- Choose an existing preset or create a new alarm.
- Set the time, repeat days and sound options shown by your installation, then save and enable the alarm.
- Keep the PC awake at the expected alert time, leave notification permissions enabled and set the system volume high enough to hear the sound.
For a repeatable routine, create separate alarms for distinct transitions—for example, start work, take lunch and begin shutdown—rather than using one alarm as a reminder for every task.
Set a one-off or recurring timer
- In Clock, open Timer.
- Select a preset or choose the option to create a timer.
- Enter the duration and start it when the task begins.
- Pause, resume or reset it from the timer controls as needed.
A timer is useful for short administrative blocks, exercise intervals or a defined “stop working” boundary. It does not create a calendar appointment and should not be treated as one.
Start a Focus session
- Open Clock and go to Focus sessions.
- Choose the session duration and decide whether breaks are included.
- Review the Focus settings for showing the timer in Clock, hiding taskbar badges and suppressing taskbar flashing.
- Optionally connect Microsoft To Do and select a task before starting.
- Optionally connect an audio service for music, playlists or podcasts, then start the session.
Do Not Disturb is enabled automatically for a Focus session. Integration requirements are separate: an audio connection requires the relevant service account, and Microsoft notes that syncing requires a Microsoft account. Feature availability can vary by region.

Make Clock alerts dependable
- Prevent sleep: Open Windows power settings and choose a sleep configuration that keeps the computer awake through the alarm or timer. Microsoft specifically advises changing sleep settings when Clock warns that notifications only appear while the device is awake.
- Check power: Keep a laptop plugged in for long sessions or overnight alarms.
- Check sound: Raise system volume, verify the selected output device and make sure mute or a headset disconnect will not hide the alert.
- Check notifications: Ensure Clock notifications and Do Not Disturb rules permit the alert you expect.
- Distinguish lock from sleep: Clock may notify while the device is locked, but the documented requirement that the computer remain awake still applies.
Pomro: for configurable Pomodoro routines
Pomro is a conditional recommendation for readers who want more control over repeated focus-and-break cycles than a basic timer provides. Its publisher describes it as a free Pomodoro focus timer for Windows 10 and 11 that links sessions to activities and keeps a compact timer above other work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Published presets and custom sequences
| Preset | Focus interval | Break interval |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced | 25 minutes | 5 minutes |
| Deep work | 50 minutes | 10 minutes |
| Sprint | 15 minutes | 3 minutes |
The publisher says you can create and save your own sequences, which is the main reason to choose Pomro over a fixed timer. For example, you could build a sequence with two short work blocks, a longer recovery break and a final review block instead of manually restarting a timer.
Offline and storage claims
According to the publisher, Pomro works offline without an account, stores settings, activities and focus history locally, and contains no ads. Those are publisher statements rather than independently verified test results. Confirm the current Microsoft Store listing, Windows requirements and feature availability before installing, because listings and integrations can change.
Who should choose it
- Choose Pomro when repeatable, adjustable work/break patterns are the priority.
- Stay with Clock when you also need clock-time alarms, general-purpose timers or built-in Windows Focus controls.
- Do not assume Pomro supplies the same Do Not Disturb, taskbar or notification behavior as Clock unless the current listing explicitly says so.
PowerToys Awake: solve the sleep problem, not the alarm problem
PowerToys Awake keeps a computer awake indefinitely, for a selected time interval or until a chosen expiration time. The display can still turn off by default; a separate setting keeps the display on when that is necessary for a task.
Important lock-screen limitation
Awake runs in the user session and does not work while the lock screen is displayed. Therefore, it cannot guarantee that a locked PC remains awake for an alarm. For a machine that must remain awake while locked, Microsoft directs users to configure the Windows power plan instead.
Supported systems and installation
Microsoft’s developer documentation says PowerToys runs on Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 or later on x64 and Arm64 PCs. Installation options include the Microsoft Store, WinGet and GitHub. Microsoft described PowerToys in 2026 as containing “30+ tools in one free app”; that rounded-down figure describes the suite’s breadth, not alarm quality or routine effectiveness.

When to add Awake
- Add Awake when a long focus session, download or presentation must continue while the user session remains active.
- Do not add it merely to obtain alarms; Clock still supplies the alarm or timer.
- Do not use it as a lock-screen workaround; adjust the power plan for that case.
Cost, accounts and installation choices
All three recommendations can be used without a purchase: Clock is included with Windows, Pomro is described by its publisher as free, and PowerToys is a free Microsoft utility. “Free” does not mean every connected service is included. Spotify remains a separate service with its own account, and Microsoft says Clock syncing requires a Microsoft account. Region-dependent features may not appear on every installation.
Clock needs no separate download when it is present on your Windows installation. Pomro’s current Microsoft Store listing is the appropriate place to check supported versions and permissions. PowerToys can be installed through the Microsoft Store, WinGet or GitHub. Installation channel, account prompts and feature names can change, so read the current listing rather than relying on an old screenshot or tutorial.
Pomro’s publisher says its settings, activities and history stay local and that it works offline without an account. Clock’s comparable data-storage behavior is not specified in the product instructions summarized here. If local-only storage is important, treat Pomro’s statement as a claim to verify against its current privacy information, not as an independently audited guarantee.

How to choose by job, not by feature count
Start with the event you are trying to control. A meeting or medication reminder is a clock-time problem, so use an alarm. A 20-minute inbox clean-up is a duration problem, so use a timer. A writing block with planned breaks is a focus-session problem. Choosing the wrong category creates avoidable friction: repeatedly restarting a timer for a daily meeting is cumbersome, while using a fixed-time alarm for a task that starts late gives you the wrong endpoint.
Next, decide whether interruption control matters. If you want Do Not Disturb, hidden taskbar badges and reduced flashing, Clock’s Focus session is the documented fit. If the defining requirement is a sequence such as 25 minutes of work, 5 minutes of rest, then a longer break, Pomro’s saved-sequence claim is more relevant. If neither requirement matters, the built-in timer is the simplest and least complicated choice.
Finally, check the machine state. A perfect schedule is useless if the laptop sleeps, loses power or sends sound to disconnected headphones. PowerToys Awake addresses active-session sleep; it does not address a locked screen. This power-state check belongs in your selection process, not as an afterthought.

Build a reliable daily routine
- Map the events. List clock-time commitments separately from duration-based tasks. Put meetings and wake-up times in alarms; put writing, exercise or email blocks in timers or Focus sessions.
- Choose one primary app. Use Clock for a mixed routine. Use Pomro when custom Pomodoro sequences are the defining requirement.
- Define transitions. Set an alarm for the start of the day, a timer for the first bounded task and a Focus session for the main work block. Avoid overlapping sounds that could make the schedule ambiguous.
- Configure interruptions before starting. In Clock Focus settings, decide whether taskbar badges and flashing should be hidden and whether Do Not Disturb should run automatically.
- Plan breaks explicitly. If breaks are included in a Clock Focus session, decide their length before you begin. In Pomro, select a published preset or save a sequence that reflects your actual work pattern instead of changing it mid-session.
- Protect the power state. Plug in a laptop for long or overnight schedules, review sleep settings and use Awake only when the active user session must stay awake.
- Test the whole path. Set a short timer, lock the device without putting it to sleep, confirm the sound and verify that your chosen output device is audible.
- Review after several days. Adjust durations and break patterns based on the routine you can actually follow. The available documentation does not establish a universally effective interval, so treat the presets as starting points rather than prescriptions.
Pitfalls that make a routine look broken
- Confusing closed with asleep: Closing Clock is documented as compatible with alarms and timers; sleep is the state that prevents notifications from appearing.
- Assuming locked means awake: A locked session can remain awake, but Awake itself does not operate at the lock screen. Verify the actual power behavior on your PC.
- Relying on a disconnected audio device: A muted speaker, Bluetooth headset left in another room or changed output device can make a valid alert inaudible.
- Expecting identical features across apps: Pomro’s publisher describes activities and cycles, but that does not establish Clock-style Do Not Disturb or taskbar controls.
- Treating presets as medical or productivity rules: The 25/5, 50/10 and 15/3 patterns are product presets, not evidence that one interval is best for everyone.
- Ignoring support status: A feature may run on Windows 10 even though standard Windows 10 support ended. Compatibility and security support are separate questions.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The alarm did not sound.”
- Check whether the PC entered sleep; Clock notifications require the computer to be awake.
- Confirm the laptop was powered, not in a critical-battery shutdown state.
- Raise volume and select the intended speaker or headset.
- Review Clock notification permission and Do Not Disturb settings.
“The app was closed, so I assumed the timer stopped.”
Microsoft says Clock alarms and timers can work while the Clock window is closed or the device is locked. Closing the window is different from putting Windows to sleep, so check power settings before replacing the app.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Awake did not keep the locked PC running.”
That behavior matches its documented limitation: Awake does not work while the lock screen is displayed. Configure the Windows power plan if the computer must remain awake while locked.
“Pomro’s options or availability differ from the description.”
Publisher claims and store listings can change. Check the current listing for supported Windows versions, account requirements, integrations and privacy details before relying on it for a critical routine.
Windows version and support context
Clock documentation still describes alarms and timers for Windows 10, but Microsoft ended standard Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes under standard support. A new routine setup should use a currently supported Windows version when the hardware permits it; feature compatibility alone is not the same as security support.
Which setup should you install?
Install nothing extra first: configure Windows Clock, create one alarm, one timer and one Focus session, then test them while the PC is awake and audible. Add Pomro only if its custom sequences solve a problem Clock cannot. Add PowerToys Awake only when preventing sleep during an active user session is the missing piece. This separates the routine design problem from the power-state problem and avoids expecting one utility to perform all three jobs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windows Clock free?
Clock is included with Windows, so there is no separate purchase for its documented alarms, timers and Focus sessions. Connected services such as Spotify have their own accounts and terms.

Will a Windows Clock alarm work if the app is closed?
Microsoft says alarms and timers can work while the Clock window is closed or the device is locked. The computer still has to remain awake, and notifications, power and volume settings must allow the alert.
Will an alarm sound while my laptop is asleep?
Do not assume it will. Microsoft states that the computer must remain awake for Clock notifications to appear. Adjust sleep settings and keep the laptop powered for an important schedule.
Does PowerToys Awake keep a locked PC awake?
No. Awake runs in the user session and does not work while the lock screen is displayed. Use the Windows power plan when a computer must remain awake while locked.
Recommended Free Tools
What Pomro preset should I use?
Pomro’s publisher lists Balanced at 25 minutes of focus and 5 minutes of break, Deep work at 50 and 10, and Sprint at 15 and 3. Treat these as starting points; the product information does not establish a universally best interval.
Does Pomro require an account or internet connection?
Its publisher says Pomro works offline without an account and stores settings, activities and focus history locally. Verify the current store listing and privacy information because product claims and requirements can change.
Can Windows Focus sessions play music?
Clock can connect an audio service for music, playlists or podcasts. The relevant service account is separate, and Microsoft notes that feature availability can vary by region.
Should I install a physical alarm clock or another paid product?
Not for this software setup. A physical clock, standalone timer, headphones or a routine book is optional and is not required to choose or use these Windows tools.
The Bottom Line
Start with Windows Clock. It is the only option here that combines documented clock-time alarms, countdown timers and Focus sessions with Do Not Disturb and optional task or audio integrations. Choose Pomro when saved, adjustable Pomodoro sequences are the deciding feature. Choose PowerToys Awake only to manage sleep during an active user session, and remember that it cannot keep a locked PC awake. In every case, verify power, notifications and sound before trusting the routine.
