There are not five currently verified, genuinely free P2P VPNs. The strongest provisional candidate is PrivadoVPN Free: its official plan page lists 10 GB of uncapped-speed data per month, while independent 2026 comparisons report that its free locations permit torrenting. However, the provider’s own page does not expressly confirm P2P permission, so verify that policy before relying on it.

Windscribe Free and Proton VPN Free do not qualify for torrenting on the evidence available: Windscribe says P2P is disabled on its free servers, and Proton lists BitTorrent as a paid feature. Hotspot Shield Basic is reported to allow P2P, but current provider confirmation was not established. NordVPN is a paid service with a reported refund period, not an ongoing free VPN. That distinction matters because a “free VPN” and a “free P2P VPN” are different products.

The honest answer: only one free option is provisionally suitable

A VPN belongs on a torrenting shortlist only when all of these conditions apply to the exact plan and server you will use:

  • The plan is an ongoing free tier, not a paid subscription that can be refunded.
  • The provider expressly permits P2P, or current, credible evidence confirms that P2P works on the free tier.
  • The allowance is large enough for both downloading and uploading.
  • The client has a kill switch or firewall that can stop traffic if the VPN disconnects.

Against that test, the 2026 evidence supports one cautious recommendation rather than a list of five. PrivadoVPN Free is worth investigating first, but its P2P permission needs confirmation from the provider. The other named services either block P2P on their free plans, have unresolved eligibility, or are paid services presented with a refund period.

2026 comparison of the five named services

The table separates ongoing free access from paid access and identifies who supports each P2P claim. The figures attributed to Gizmodo come from its September 4, 2026 comparison; they are not independent tests performed for this article.

Service Free access status P2P evidence for the free tier Published allowance or restriction How to treat it
PrivadoVPN Free Ongoing free plan Gizmodo and Tom’s Guide report that free locations support torrenting; the official free-plan page does not expressly confirm P2P. 10 GB per month at uncapped speed, then Lite Mode; Gizmodo reports one device at a time. Best provisional candidate, subject to current provider confirmation.
Windscribe Free Ongoing free plan Windscribe’s help article says P2P is disabled on free servers. 2 GB per month by default, or 10 GB after email confirmation. Useful for ordinary VPN activity, not free-tier torrenting.
Hotspot Shield Basic Reported as ongoing free by Gizmodo Gizmodo reports P2P capability, but current official confirmation was not established. 500 MB per day at full speed, then 2 Mbps; US-only servers, according to Gizmodo. Do not rely on it for P2P until the provider confirms eligibility.
Proton VPN Free Ongoing free plan Proton lists BitTorrent as a paid feature; free servers therefore do not qualify as a free P2P plan. Unlimited time, speed and data on the free plan. Excellent for unrestricted general VPN use, not free torrenting.
NordVPN No ongoing free tier established Gizmodo reports P2P support on its paid network. Gizmodo describes a 30-day refund period. Paid VPN with a refund policy, not a free VPN.

PrivadoVPN Free: the provisional first choice

PrivadoVPN’s official free-plan material establishes a monthly allowance of 10 GB at uncapped speed. After that allowance, the plan continues in Lite Mode. That is materially different from a hard cutoff, but a slower mode may make large torrents impractical. Confirm whether Lite Mode permits P2P before treating the remaining service as usable torrenting bandwidth.

Gizmodo’s September 2026 comparison and Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison say PrivadoVPN’s free locations support torrenting. The provider’s own plan page, however, does not expressly make that promise. Because P2P permission is the central eligibility question, ask support or check the current acceptable-use and server documentation immediately before downloading. Do not infer permission merely because the paid network supports P2P.

What 10 GB means in practice

Every byte downloaded counts toward a finite allowance, and uploading while seeding consumes traffic too. A 4 GB download can therefore use at least 4 GB before any seeding; continued seeding can consume several additional gigabytes. Repeated large transfers will exhaust 10 GB quickly. Schedule only the material you can complete within the monthly allowance, and watch the client’s upload as well as download total.

Gizmodo reports one device at a time for the free plan. If that remains the current limit, connecting a second device can either displace the torrenting connection or make the plan unsuitable for a household. Confirm the device rule when you verify P2P access.

Logging and privacy qualification

PrivadoVPN’s own page describes a zero-logs policy. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 review said that policy had not been independently audited at the time of its review. Treat “no logs” and “zero logs” as provider policy claims, not as proof of anonymity. A VPN changes the network path and the IP address visible to peers, but it does not make the user anonymous or remove the need for safe torrent-client settings.

Windscribe Free: a clear P2P exclusion

Windscribe’s help article, byline “Winder S.” and dated October 23, 2025, states: “P2P is disabled on our free servers at this time.” That direct provider statement resolves the conflicting claim in Gizmodo’s 2026 comparison. Windscribe Free should not be presented as a VPN that allows P2P, even though its paid network may have P2P-capable locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The free allowance is 2 GB per month by default or 10 GB after email confirmation. Those limits can be useful for ordinary browsing on public Wi-Fi, but the allowance does not turn a P2P-blocked server into a torrenting service. Do not try to bypass the restriction by selecting another free location; the provider’s statement applies to its free servers.

Windscribe’s marketing also describes a no-identifying-logs policy. That is a provider assertion rather than independent verification. Keep the distinction clear when comparing privacy claims.

Hotspot Shield Basic: reported P2P, but not verified enough to recommend

Gizmodo reports Hotspot Shield Basic as an ongoing free option with P2P capability. Its comparison gives the plan a daily allowance of 500 MB at full speed, followed by 2 Mbps, and says the free service uses US-only servers. This is a particularly restrictive setup for torrenting: 500 MB can be consumed by a small download, and 2 Mbps is slow for both downloading and seeding.

The current provider terms or support documentation confirming P2P eligibility were not established. Until that confirmation is available, treat the plan as an unverified lead rather than one of the best free P2P VPNs. A third-party table cannot substitute for permission on the exact Basic servers you will connect to.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proton VPN Free: unlimited data, no free BitTorrent

Proton’s free plan is attractive for conventional VPN use because the company states: “We don’t impose any time, speed, or data limits if you’re on the Proton VPN Free plan.” Unlimited bandwidth does not make it a torrenting plan, though. Proton’s plan comparison lists BitTorrent as a paid feature and directs P2P use to paid P2P-optimized servers.

That means Proton VPN Free fails the most important test for this article even though it has the most generous data allowance. A paid Proton plan may support P2P, but calling it free because a refund window may exist would mislead readers. Confirm current paid-plan terms independently before considering that route.

NordVPN: a refund route is not a free VPN

Gizmodo reports P2P support on NordVPN’s paid network and describes a 30-day refund period. A refund period lets a customer test a paid subscription under stated conditions; it does not create an ongoing free tier. The exact current refund conditions and price should be checked before purchase.

Include NordVPN only in a paid-service comparison, not in a list of five free P2P VPNs. The same rule applies to any provider whose only “free” access is a temporary refund or trial.

How to decide whether a free plan is genuinely suitable

1. Check the exact free-server P2P rule

Look for wording that applies to the free tier and its free locations. “P2P supported on our network” can refer only to paid servers. If the provider says P2P is disabled on free servers, stop there; no amount of bandwidth or privacy marketing changes the result.

2. Calculate the allowance for both directions

Download and upload are both network traffic. A plan advertised as 10 GB per month is not a 10 GB download allowance if you continue seeding. Daily caps can be even more restrictive because a client may remain connected after the high-speed quota is gone.

3. Check speed after the allowance

PrivadoVPN’s Lite Mode and Hotspot Shield Basic’s 2 Mbps post-quota speed may keep the connection technically active, but a torrent can become impractical. Ask whether P2P remains allowed after the high-speed allowance and whether the provider throttles uploads as well as downloads.

4. Check server geography

Hotspot Shield Basic is reported as US-only. That may affect latency, the availability of nearby peers, and the legal environment applicable to the connection. A free plan with only distant servers can perform worse than its headline speed suggests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check device and client controls

Gizmodo reports one device at a time for PrivadoVPN Free. Also check whether the app offers a kill switch or firewall, whether it supports IPv6 and DNS leak protection, and whether your torrent client can bind to the VPN adapter. These controls reduce accidental exposure but do not guarantee anonymity.

6. Treat privacy language precisely

“No logs,” “zero logs” and “no identifying logs” are policy descriptions unless backed by a relevant independent audit or other primary evidence. Compare what the provider says it collects, how long it retains information and whether the claim covers the free plan. Do not convert a marketing statement into a guarantee.

Safe setup: a practical sequence for any permitted P2P plan

  1. Verify permission first. Read the current free-plan and acceptable-use terms for the exact server group. If the terms are ambiguous, ask provider support and save the answer.
  2. Install the official VPN client. Avoid modified clients and browser-only extensions. A browser extension does not route a separate torrent application through the VPN.
  3. Enable the strongest traffic-blocking control. Turn on the app’s kill switch or firewall before launching the torrent client. Prefer a setting that blocks traffic whenever the VPN tunnel is down, not only when the application closes normally.
  4. Connect to a permitted location. Wait for the VPN client to report a live connection and verify that the selected location is allowed for P2P. Do this before starting the torrent client.
  5. Bind the torrent client to the VPN adapter where supported. Interface binding can prevent the client from using another network interface, but adapter names or addresses can change after reconnecting. Treat binding as a secondary safeguard, not a replacement for the VPN firewall.
  6. Test with non-sensitive material. Confirm that the torrent client stops when the VPN is disconnected and resumes only after the tunnel is restored. Check the public address shown to peers with a reputable test method before transferring anything sensitive.
  7. Monitor the allowance. Record download and upload totals. Stop or pause seeding before a small free quota becomes an unexpected overage or a permanently throttled connection.
  8. Exit in the safe order. Stop the torrent client before disconnecting the VPN. This is especially important when the client is not reliably bound to the VPN adapter.

Windscribe’s Windows uTorrent Classic procedure

Windscribe’s July 30, 2026 setup guide is specifically for uTorrent Classic on Windows. Its instructions should not be generalized to every VPN, operating system or torrent client, and they do not override the fact that Windscribe free servers disable P2P.

  1. Open Windscribe and enable its Firewall in Always On mode.
  2. Connect to a location marked as P2P capable.
  3. Start uTorrent Classic only after the VPN connection is established.
  4. If you use interface binding, select the current VPN adapter in uTorrent. Recheck the selection after reconnecting because adapter details can change.
  5. Exit uTorrent before disconnecting Windscribe.

The guide describes interface binding as a secondary safeguard and says: “A VPN protects your privacy; it does not alter copyright law.” Those instructions are useful for understanding failure prevention, but they do not make Windscribe’s free servers P2P-capable.

Common failure modes and what to do

The torrent never starts

First confirm that P2P is permitted on the exact free plan and location. A blocked free server will not be fixed by changing ports or torrent settings. If permission is confirmed, reconnect to an approved location, restart the client after the tunnel is live, and check that the client is not bound to an old VPN adapter.

The download works, then becomes unusably slow

Check whether you exhausted the monthly or daily high-speed allowance. PrivadoVPN Free moves to Lite Mode after 10 GB, while Hotspot Shield Basic is reported to move from 500 MB per day at full speed to 2 Mbps. Pause nonessential transfers and account for upload traffic from seeding.

Peers see the ordinary network connection

Stop the torrent immediately. Re-enable the VPN firewall or kill switch, verify the client’s interface binding, reconnect the VPN and repeat a controlled test. Binding can fail after an adapter change, so inspect it after every major reconnect or client update.

The VPN disconnects while the client remains open

The kill switch or firewall should block the torrent client until the tunnel returns. If traffic continues, close the client, confirm the blocking mode is enabled, and do not resume until a controlled test shows that disconnection stops transfers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A free plan asks for an upgrade

That may indicate a quota or feature boundary rather than a technical fault. Proton’s free plan, for example, has unlimited data but reserves BitTorrent for paid plans. An upgrade prompt does not mean the free plan supports P2P.

Legal and privacy limits

Torrent technology has lawful uses, including distributing open-source software and public-domain material, but a VPN does not grant permission to copy copyrighted works. Follow the law where you live and the terms of the material’s rights holder. Windscribe’s own guide makes the point directly: a VPN protects privacy; it does not alter copyright law.

A VPN also cannot protect a torrent client that bypasses the tunnel after a disconnect, nor can it prevent a service from enforcing its terms. Use a kill switch or firewall, bind the client where possible, and verify the result before handling sensitive transfers. Avoid describing any free VPN as anonymous or as a guarantee against identification.

Bottom-line choices for 2026

  • If you insist on an ongoing free plan for torrenting: investigate PrivadoVPN Free first, but obtain current confirmation that P2P is allowed on its free locations. Plan around 10 GB of uncapped-speed data per month and the subsequent Lite Mode.
  • If you need a free VPN for ordinary browsing: Windscribe Free offers 2 GB by default or 10 GB after email confirmation, while Proton VPN Free offers unlimited time, speed and data. Neither is a free torrenting solution on the cited provider evidence.
  • If you are considering Hotspot Shield Basic: treat the reported P2P support, 500 MB daily full-speed allowance, 2 Mbps fallback and US-only locations as information requiring direct provider verification.
  • If you are considering NordVPN or a paid Proton plan: classify it as paid access, even if a refund period is available. Verify the current price, eligibility and refund conditions before subscribing.

The practical conclusion is narrower than the headline: current evidence does not establish five free P2P VPNs. One free tier is a provisional candidate, two explicitly fail the P2P test, one remains unverified, and one is paid. That is the distinction to make before installing a torrent client or trusting a free VPN with a transfer.
