Build your free-to-play account around Arthur and Marlena. Arthur is the first tank to develop because the squad model loses its strongest remaining lineup when he is removed. Marlena is the safest long-term carry because development goals provide 920 shards and approximately 940 guaranteed free shards in total. Add a second tank, one support, and an accessible damage dealer rather than spreading resources across every recruit.
The short answer: who should F2P players build?
The most reliable free-to-play progression core is Arthur, Marlena, Daskal, Harper, and an obtainable damage dealer such as Zoya. Use Arthur and Daskal in front, with Marlena, Zoya, and Harper behind them. If Daskal, Zoya, or Harper are not yet developed on your account, keep the same jobs—tank, carry, support, and flexible damage—and use the strongest heroes you can actually star up.
| Priority | Hero or role | Why it earns resources | What to invest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arthur | Early Tavern Warrior tank and frontline anchor. The squad-builder analysis rates the best remaining squad at only 64/100 without him. | Best Antitoxin, defensive gear, and tank Skill Badges. |
| 2 | Marlena | Warrior carry with boss-oriented energy burst; development goals guarantee 920 shards and about 940 free shards overall. | Omni shards, carry Skill Badges, offensive gear, and levels. |
| 3 | Daskal | Second Warrior tank; the hero guide identifies him as a server-day-29 shield and damage-absorption specialist. | Survival gear after Arthur, then enough levels to hold the second frontline slot. |
| 4 | Harper or Bell | Support keeps the core alive and improves its damage. Harper is the named starter support; Bell is the alternative in the Rat Swarm core. | Support skills and survivability before chasing rarity. |
| 5 | Zoya, Cynthia, Annie, or another accessible DPS | Fills the final damage slot. Zoya is the natural alternative when her shards are available; Cynthia can suit Ranger-focused accounts. | Only invest heavily when shards and stars are sustainable. |
This order is about account value, not a universal power ranking. A hero with realistic shards, stars, skills, and gear is usually more useful today than a higher-tier hero that remains unbuilt.

He solves the earliest failure condition
Arthur is an early Tavern Warrior tank designed to stand in front while the back row deals damage. New accounts most often fail because the frontline collapses before a carry can use a second rotation of skills. Arthur’s health, mitigation, and defensive skill investment buy the time Marlena needs to finish waves.
#1 Best Overall
The squad analysis gives him unusual replacement value
The Last Asylum Wiki squad analysis evaluates five-hero survivability and damage over a 30-second fight. Removing Arthur drops the best remaining squad to 64/100, making him the most expensive core member to replace in the recommended free lineup. That score is a model result, not a guarantee for every stage, but it identifies the account-wide value of a dependable first tank.
How to build him
- Put your best available Antitoxin into Arthur before spending it on bench heroes.
- Use your strongest defensive gear and tank-oriented badges on him, even if another hero has a higher theoretical tier.
- Level his survival skills before upgrading marginal damage on a secondary recruit.
- Keep him in the frontline until another tank has enough stars, gear, and skills to survive the same content.
Why Marlena is the best free carry
Her shard path is unusually dependable
Development goals guarantee 920 Marlena shards and approximately 940 free shards in total according to the 2026 Last Asylum Wiki data. The source describes her as the only UR who accumulates for free. That reliability matters more to a free account than a higher theoretical ceiling that depends on paid pulls or a low-probability event.
She converts survival into boss damage
Marlena is a Warrior carry whose energy burst is suited to boss pressure and PvE damage. Arthur’s job is to keep enemies occupied; Marlena’s job is to turn the resulting time into concentrated damage. Her value is therefore highest when the team survives long enough to cycle her burst rather than when she is judged in isolation.
Where her resources go
- Reserve omni shards for Marlena unless a replacement has a clearly better, sustainable star path.
- Give her carry-focused Skill Badges after Arthur’s essential survival skills are covered.
- Prioritize offensive equipment and upgrades that improve burst frequency or damage.
- Do not split the same shard and badge pool among several DPS heroes simply because their tier-list labels look higher.
The rest of the free-to-play core
Daskal: the second frontline slot
Daskal is a Warrior tank described in the hero guide as a server-day-29 shield and damage-absorption specialist. Once he becomes available, he lets Arthur stop carrying every hit alone and makes the five-hero model’s survivability assumptions more realistic. Build him when your account reaches him and when the content is actually killing the frontline; do not delay campaign progress waiting for a perfect second tank.
If Daskal is unavailable or under-starred, use the strongest tank already on your account. A lower-tier tank with equipment and defensive skills is preferable to an empty frontline slot.

Harper or Bell: the support decision
Harper is a Warrior support whose listed strengths include team attack, energy-damage assistance, and help for allies at low health. Bell is the alternative support named in the Rat Swarm core. Pick the one with the better star level and shard access, not automatically the one with the rarer label. Support value comes from keeping Arthur and Marlena active and amplifying their damage.
Zoya, Cynthia, Annie, or another obtainable damage dealer
The Rat Swarm guide lists Zoya, Annie, Red Lady, and Cynthia as main DPS options. Zoya is the most natural substitute when her shards are available, while Cynthia can be a strong Ranger option for an account already developing that faction. Do not replace a heavily invested Marlena with a higher-tier name unless the newcomer has both a realistic shard route and enough stars to overtake her.
Recommended formations
Early free-to-play formation
Use Arthur and Daskal in front; Marlena, Zoya, and Harper in back. This is the cited starter formation and covers two frontline jobs, one primary carry, one additional damage slot, and one support slot.
| Frontline | Backline | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| Arthur + Daskal | Marlena + Zoya + Harper | You have the complete starter core and need balanced campaign survivability. |
| Arthur + strongest available tank | Marlena + accessible DPS + Harper or Bell | Daskal or the named DPS is not yet obtainable or lacks stars. |
| One durable tank | Marlena + support + strongest DPS | Your roster is thin. Add a second tank only after these three roles function. |
Rat Swarm adaptation
Start with Arthur or Daskal, Marlena or Zoya, and Harper or Bell, then fill the remaining positions according to the failure you observe. Add a second tank when the frontline collapses before the boss phase. Add another DPS when the team survives but cannot finish within the damage window. Annie, Red Lady, and Cynthia are named alternatives for the damage slots.
Positioning logic
- Put the tank most likely to be focused in the safer frontline position and the sturdier tank where incoming pressure is highest.
- Keep Marlena protected until her energy burst is ready; moving her forward for a small damage gain is rarely worth losing the carry.
- Place support where its area effects reach the core rather than where it can deal incidental damage.
- Change one position at a time so you can identify whether a failure came from targeting, survival, or damage.
How to choose between two investment candidates
1. Check free shard reliability
Count the shards you can obtain repeatedly or through guaranteed development goals. Marlena’s 920-goal payout and approximately 940 total free shards are a stronger foundation than a lottery-based or paid-only route. A hero you cannot star up will eventually lose to a less glamorous hero you can build.
Rank #3
2. Fill the missing role
Ask what ended the attempt. If the frontline died first, a second tank or tank investment has priority. If the team survived but missed the damage check, improve Marlena or add an accessible DPS. If both damage and survival fluctuate, a support may deliver more value than another attacker.
3. Use faction synergy as a tiebreaker
Same-faction bonuses and counter relationships matter when two heroes have similar star levels and investment. They should not justify discarding a substantially more developed hero for a theoretical bonus. Compare the actual stars, skills, gear, and shard route on your account.
4. Separate ceiling from current performance
The tier list ranks heroes by maximum Might. That is a fully upgraded ceiling, not a promise about an unbuilt account. A lower-tier hero with stars, skills, and gear can outperform an S-tier hero at low investment. Treat the list as a long-term target map and your roster’s current development as the immediate decision.
5. Match the mode
Rat Swarm and boss waves reward survival plus concentrated burst. Arena and faction-specific modes can favor different counters or lineups. Keep the main campaign core intact and make small mode-specific substitutions instead of maintaining several equally expensive teams.
Resource plan for a genuinely free account
Concentrate the first build
The beginner guide’s central advice is to upgrade one core hero at a time rather than flattening the entire roster. In practice, finish essential Arthur survival upgrades, then push Marlena’s carry package, then bring the second tank and support up to the level required by the content. Five half-built heroes usually underperform one durable tank, one strong DPS, and one support.

Spend Antitoxin deliberately
- Arthur receives the first meaningful Antitoxin allocation because his survival determines whether the rest of the squad can act.
- Marlena receives the next major allocation when additional damage shortens boss phases or prevents waves from overwhelming the tank.
- Daskal receives Antitoxin after he is available and actually needed for the second frontline slot.
- Do not spend scarce Antitoxin on heroes waiting on shards or on temporary recruits you expect to replace.
Protect Skill Badges
Keep badges for the active squad. Arthur’s survival skills and Marlena’s burst skills are the first priorities. Support badges come next when Harper or Bell is already part of the functioning lineup. A badge placed on a bench hero is effectively locked resource until that hero becomes a real replacement.
Use omni shards with a replacement rule
Before moving omni shards from Marlena to another DPS, require two conditions: the new hero must have a sustainable shard source, and its current stars must be high enough to overtake Marlena after equivalent gear and skills. Without both, the switch slows the whole account.

Early campaign
Build Arthur as the clear frontline anchor and begin Marlena’s shard and level path. Use any competent damage dealer and support that can be starred. The objective is not a perfect faction bonus; it is a stable three-role core that clears stages consistently.
After Daskal becomes available
The hero guide identifies Daskal at server day 29. At that point, compare his stars and defensive skills with your current second tank. Promote him when he can survive the content, then redistribute excess defensive gear only after Arthur remains secure.

Boss and Rat Swarm checks
Run the same formation for several attempts and record the first failure: tank death, support death, or damage timeout. Change one variable—tank, support, or DPS—rather than replacing the entire team. This reveals whether the account needs durability or burst and prevents random resource spending.

Long-term roster review
Reassess whenever a candidate has both a sustainable shard route and enough stars to exceed the current role holder. The tier source is marked current for version 1.0.87 and was verified in August 2026; hero availability, server-day unlocks, shard guarantees, and rankings can change with patches. Recheck in-game requirements after an update before committing a large resource reserve.
Common mistakes and fixes
Chasing a tier label
Symptom: an S-tier recruit dies immediately or contributes less than a lower-tier veteran. Fix: compare stars, skill levels, gear, and shard access. The tier list measures maximum Might, while your account needs current performance.
Building five damage dealers
Symptom: enemies reach the back row before Marlena’s burst. Fix: restore a durable frontline with Arthur, add Daskal or another built tank, and keep one support before adding more DPS.

Spreading Antitoxin and badges evenly
Symptom: every hero is playable but none survives difficult content. Fix: concentrate upgrades on Arthur and Marlena, then bring the remaining roles up only as the mode requires.
Replacing Marlena too early
Symptom: a new DPS looks stronger on paper but stalls at low stars. Fix: keep Marlena until the replacement has a sustainable shard path and enough stars to surpass her after comparable investment.
Waiting for an ideal roster
Symptom: campaign progress stops while you save for Daskal, Zoya, or another named hero. Fix: use the strongest obtainable hero in the missing role now. Progress generates more resources than an empty slot.
Quick Recap
Practical free-to-play checklist
- Raise Arthur first as the primary tank and give him the best defensive resources.
- Claim every development-goal reward that advances Marlena toward the guaranteed 920-shard path and approximately 940 free total.
- Build one support—Harper or Bell—according to stars and shard access.
- Add Daskal around his server-day-29 availability when a second frontline is needed.
- Choose Zoya, Cynthia, Annie, Red Lady, or another obtainable DPS based on your actual shard route.
- Run a five-hero formation only after the tank, carry, and support roles are stable.
- Diagnose failures by asking whether the team dies, times out, or lacks support before changing heroes.
- Reevaluate a replacement only when it has both sustainable shards and enough stars to overtake the current hero.
