For most people, the best free screen-mirroring option is the feature already built into a compatible phone and TV—not a new app. Start with Samsung Smart View or SmartThings for a Galaxy phone and compatible Samsung TV, AirPlay for compatible Apple devices and TVs, or the mirroring option supported by your Roku model. If you only want to play a video, casting that video may be simpler than duplicating your whole screen.
Choose by device and what you want to show
There is no single free app that works best with every phone, television, and streaming device. Compatibility depends on the exact models, and “mirror” can mean either duplicating everything on your phone or sending a supported video to the TV. Check your built-in options first; consider a third-party app only if those do not meet your needs.

Know whether you need mirroring or casting
Screen mirroring duplicates the phone’s display on the TV, so the TV shows what is on the phone. Casting sends supported media—such as a video—to play on the TV, while the phone can act more like a controller. Samsung explains both distinctions in its support guidance: Samsung US: use Smart View to connect your phone to a TV and Samsung UK support. If you only want to watch a supported video, look for the app’s cast option before installing a full-screen mirroring app.

Samsung Galaxy phone to Samsung TV
Smart View is built into Galaxy phones; it is not an app you need to download. On the phone, open Quick Settings and select Smart View, then choose the TV and approve the connection if prompted. Samsung also describes connecting through SmartThings. Most Samsung TVs manufactured from 2016 onward can be detected by SmartThings, while Smart View may be worth trying with earlier TVs. Apple device to Samsung TV
For a Samsung TV made after 2019 that supports AirPlay, use the Apple device’s screen-mirroring controls and select the TV. Samsung says both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Confirm support for the exact television model rather than relying on the brand alone. Samsung UK support.
Phone or computer to Roku
Roku documents Smart View from Samsung Android phones, wireless display connections from Windows 10 and 11, and AirPlay from Apple devices to compatible Roku devices. Roku says most current-generation streaming players and Roku TV models support screen mirroring, but it lists model exceptions. Its general guidance says Android 10 or later is likely to support mirroring, with an exception for Google-branded devices running OS 6.0 or later. Treat that as Roku’s guidance, not a guarantee for every phone or Roku model; consult its compatibility and setup instructions. Roku Support.

When a third-party app may help
A third-party app may be worth considering when your phone and TV lack a shared built-in method. Verify the app’s current free-tier limits and whether its advertised connection method matches your devices before depending on it. Free access can be limited, and some features may require payment.

- LocalCast: Its Google Play listing, updated September 12, 2026, describes screen mirroring with Chromecast, Roku, Fire TV, and DLNA TVs, and says some features are part of a paid Pro subscription. These are the listing’s claims, not independent compatibility or performance tests. LocalCast on Google Play.
- PigeonCast: Its Google Play listing, updated September 30, 2026, claims support for AirPlay, Google Cast, and numerous smart-TV brands. The listing includes a user review describing a subscription prompt interrupting mirroring. That is one user’s report, not evidence of typical behavior; check the current free-tier terms before relying on the app. PigeonCast on Google Play.
- iMirror: This open-source project describes an AirPlay receiver APK for Android TV, intended to make the TV appear in an Apple device’s native screen-mirroring menu. It is a specialized project for technically comfortable users, not a broadly tested recommendation. iMirror project on GitHub.
App-store descriptions explain what developers say their apps support; they do not prove reliable operation on a particular phone-TV combination. No independent side-by-side testing establishes one universally best free app or the most dependable free experience for every setup.

Fix the common reasons a TV does not appear
- Confirm compatibility. Check that your phone, TV, and streaming device support the same method; support varies by model.
- Check the network. For Samsung’s wireless methods, put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Follow your TV or Roku instructions for the applicable method.
- Enable and approve mirroring. Check the TV or streaming device’s mirroring settings and accept any connection prompt on the TV.
- Restart and reconnect if using Roku. Roku’s troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the Roku and router, then reconnecting the devices to the same network. Roku Support.
Use HDMI if wireless mirroring is unsuitable
Samsung documents connecting a compatible USB-C device to a TV with an HDMI adapter. Before buying one, confirm that your exact phone supports video output over its port and that the adapter works with that model. Samsung warns that it cannot guarantee the performance of third-party adapters. Samsung UK: connect a mobile device to a TV using an HDMI cable.
