Downloading a song for free is easy. Downloading one you are actually allowed to use is the harder part. A free file may still be protected by copyright, limited to personal listening, or subject to attribution and noncommercial-use conditions.
The sites below provide legitimate ways to find and download music, but they do not all work the same way. Some are designed for video creators, some focus on public-domain recordings, and others host music uploaded by independent artists. Always check the license attached to the specific track before using it in a video, podcast, game, advertisement, livestream, or other published project.
What “free legal music” really means
There are two separate questions:
- Can you download the file?
- What are you allowed to do with it after downloading?
A download button answers only the first question. The second depends on the track’s copyright status and license. For example, a song may be free to download for personal listening but require permission for a commercial video.
Common Creative Commons licenses include:

Save the track page, creator name, license, and download date. If attribution is required, record the track title, creator, license type, and source-page URL before you publish anything.

1. YouTube Audio Library
YouTube Audio Library is the safest first stop for creators working on YouTube videos. It is built into YouTube Studio and includes both music and sound effects.
How to download a track
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Audio library from the left menu, or visit youtube.com/audiolibrary.
- Use the Music tab and filter by title, genre, mood, artist, attribution requirement, or duration.
- Hover over the track’s date and click DOWNLOAD.
The download is an MP3. To find music that needs credit, open the filter bar and select Attribution required. For tracks without that requirement, select Attribution not required. For Creative Commons tracks, click the Creative Commons icon in the License type column and use Copy to copy YouTube’s suggested attribution text.
YouTube says Audio Library music and sound effects are copyright-safe, may be used in monetized videos by YouTube Partner Program members, and are not claimed through Content ID by a rights holder. That assurance applies to the Audio Library itself—not to music found on random YouTube channels or videos labeled “royalty-free.”

2. Musopen
Musopen focuses on classical music recordings and sheet music. Its music browser is useful when you want to search by composer, instrument, or historical period rather than by modern genre.
Open Music and use More filters, Search…, All composers, All instruments, or All periods. Musopen’s collection is intended for listening to or downloading recordings, and the site describes its hosted music as royalty- and copyright-free.
Do not assume that every classical recording has identical rights. A public-domain composition can still have separate rights in a modern performance, arrangement, or recording. Check the license icon on the individual recording page before using it outside personal listening.

Best for: Classical background music, educational projects, documentaries, and historical or cultural presentations.
3. Free Music Archive
Free Music Archive organizes music with license information attached to individual items. Tracks commonly provide a Download control or a direct file link, but the license—not the button—determines how the music may be used.
Before downloading, open the track page and look for its Creative Commons or other rights information. Check these points:

- Is attribution required?
- Does the license allow commercial use?
- Are remixes or other derivative works allowed?
- Does a share-alike condition apply?
A downloadable file can still be restricted by a noncommercial or share-alike condition. This makes Free Music Archive useful for discovery, but it requires more license checking than YouTube Audio Library.

4. Jamendo
Jamendo offers music from independent artists and separates ordinary listening or free-download options from licenses intended for broader reuse.
A practical workflow is:
- Search for a track or artist.
- Open the release or track page rather than relying only on search results.
- Read the usage and license notes.
- Use the download option provided under the applicable free terms.
- If you need the music in a commercial video, advertisement, game, or other monetized production, check whether Jamendo requires a separate synchronization or commercial license.
“Free to download” does not automatically mean “cleared for commercial video.” Jamendo’s licensing options can be valuable for professional use, but the permission must match your intended project.
Best for: Independent music, mood-based selections, and creators looking for music beyond standard stock-library sounds.
5. Internet Archive
Internet Archive contains a large range of audio collections, including live recordings, historical material, and community-uploaded files. Items can offer several formats, such as MP3, OGG, or FLAC.
To download responsibly:
- Open the individual item page.
- Read the Rights or usage statement.
- Review any collection-specific restrictions.
- Select the desired format in the download area.
The presence of downloadable files does not prove that a recording is public domain or approved for commercial reuse. Rights vary by item, and an uploader’s description may not grant every permission you need. If the rights statement is missing or unclear, choose another source.
Best for: Archive research, live recordings, public-domain material, and listeners who want format choices such as FLAC.
6. SoundCloud
SoundCloud is primarily a streaming platform, not an all-free-download catalog. A creator must enable downloads for a track before a download control appears.

When a track is available, look for the Download button on its page. A Creative Commons filter can help locate potentially reusable music, but it does not replace checking the individual track’s license. Creative Commons licenses differ on attribution, commercial use, and whether modifications are allowed.

A track can be streamable without being downloadable. If there is no download control, do not use a stream-ripping tool to create a copy. Find an authorized download or contact the uploader for permission.
Best for: Discovering independent artists and finding tracks whose creators have explicitly enabled downloads.
7. Bandcamp
Bandcamp is a marketplace where artists and labels distribute music. Some releases are offered as free downloads, “name your price” downloads, or purchases. Availability and reuse rights are controlled by the artist or label.
Bandcamp’s Help Center states that downloaded audio files are DRM-free. That means the files do not contain software preventing ordinary playback. It does not mean that the recording is copyright-free or that you may redistribute, remix, synchronize, or commercially reuse it.
Read the artist’s release notes and license information. If those details do not grant the use you need, treat the download as music for personal listening and contact the rights holder for permission.
Best for: Supporting independent artists, obtaining DRM-free personal music files, and finding artists who separately grant reuse permissions.

How to avoid a copyright problem
- Define the use. Personal listening, a monetized YouTube video, a podcast, an advertisement, and a game may require different permissions.
- Open the individual track page. Do not rely on a site-wide statement or a search-result label.
- Read the complete license. Look specifically for attribution, commercial-use, modification, and share-alike conditions.
- Save evidence. Keep the source URL, license text or screenshot, creator name, and download date.
- Prepare attribution before publishing. Include the creator, track title, license, and source link wherever the license requires it.
- Do not confuse access with permission. A playable stream or visible download button is not proof that you may republish the recording.
When a music download fails
There is no Download button
The uploader or rights holder may have disabled downloads. Use a different track, purchase an authorized copy, or ask the creator for permission. Do not bypass the restriction with a stream-ripping service.

Redirects, cookies, bot protection, or browser extensions can cause a web page to be saved with an audio-looking filename. Open the file in a text editor or inspect its properties; an HTML document is not a valid music file. Retry from the official track page, temporarily check ad-blocking or privacy extensions, and avoid unofficial download mirrors.
The file will not play
The file may be incomplete, use an unsupported codec, or be in FLAC or OGG when your device expects MP3. Check the file size, try a current media player, and convert formats only when the license permits you to make that copy.
The license is difficult to find
If an item page does not clearly expose a License, Rights, or Usage section, consider the permission uncertain. A free download is not a substitute for clear rights information.

FAQ
What is the safest site for free legal music?
For YouTube projects, YouTube Audio Library is usually the simplest choice because it identifies attribution requirements and YouTube provides a specific copyright-safety assurance for music and effects in that library. For other uses, inspect the license for each track.
Can I use free music in a monetized video?
Sometimes. The track’s license must allow commercial use, and you must satisfy any attribution or other conditions. YouTube Audio Library tracks are specifically described by YouTube as usable in monetized videos by YouTube Partner Program members, subject to the library’s terms.
Does royalty-free mean copyright-free?
No. Royalty-free generally describes how payment is handled under a license. Copyright may still exist, and the license can impose conditions such as attribution, limits on commercial use, or restrictions on redistribution.
Does DRM-free music have no copyright?
No. DRM-free only means the file lacks software restrictions that block ordinary playback. Bandcamp’s DRM-free downloads can still be protected by copyright and restricted by the artist’s terms.
