Lively Wallpaper is the best free first choice for most Windows users who want both an animated desktop and a real Windows screensaver without buying a Steam app. It is free, open source, supports multiple monitors, accepts video, GIF, webpage and application wallpapers, and can use any of those wallpapers as a Windows screensaver.
One clarification matters: Steam does not provide a general-purpose built-in screensaver. The product most people mean is Wallpaper Engine, a one-time-purchase Windows application distributed through Steam. The free tools below can reproduce much of its visual effect, but they do not all provide the same screensaver integration, content library or polish.
Quick comparison
| App | Best for | Actual Windows screensaver | Content and media | Multiple monitors | License and cost | Windows requirements or maintenance notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lively Wallpaper | A full free replacement for animated wallpaper and screensaver use | Yes; its project documentation says any wallpaper can be used as a screensaver | Video, GIF, webpage, Unity and Godot application wallpapers; drag-and-drop import | Supported | Free and open source under GPL-v3 | Microsoft Store package requires Windows 10 version 1809 or later; installer requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later. Hardware-accelerated playback uses mpv or VLC. |
| ScreenPlay | Cross-platform video wallpapers and widgets | Verify current screensaver behavior before treating it as a direct replacement | Video wallpaper and widgets | Not stated in the available listing | Free and open source | Windows and macOS are listed; current release and Windows-version support should be checked on the official project page. |
| Sucrose Wallpaper Engine | Windows-focused interactive wallpapers | Current screensaver behavior should be verified in its documentation | Interactive wallpapers | Not stated in the available listing | Free and open source | Windows-focused; exact supported versions and current release status are not stated in the available listing. |
| WinDynamicDesktop | Automatic time-of-day ambience | Not presented as a direct video-screensaver replacement | Sixteen Mojave wallpaper images rotated according to local sunrise and sunset | Not stated in the available listing | Free and open source | Windows app; exact supported versions and current release status are not stated in the available listing. |
| Dynamic Theme | Automatically refreshed still images | Not presented as an animated screensaver replacement | Bing pictures, Windows Spotlight pictures, one selected image or personal pictures | Not stated in the available listing | Free Windows app | Exact supported versions and current release status are not stated in the available listing. |
If your requirement is specifically “a video or interactive scene that appears when Windows is idle,” start with Lively. If you only want a changing desktop image, WinDynamicDesktop or Dynamic Theme is simpler and avoids the overhead of continuous animation.
What counts as a screensaver replacement?
An animated wallpaper runs behind desktop icons while you work. A Windows screensaver is an idle-session feature that starts after the configured inactivity period, normally takes over the display, and can be dismissed when you move the mouse or press a key. The two functions overlap visually but are not interchangeable.

A program can therefore look like a screensaver while only animating the desktop. Before installing an alternative, check four separate capabilities:
- Windows screensaver registration: the application can be selected from Windows’ Screen Saver Settings rather than merely running at startup.
- Media support: whether it accepts videos, GIFs, webpages, shader scenes or complete applications.
- Display control: how it handles several monitors, different resolutions and mixed orientations.
- Pause behavior: whether it stops playback during games, maximized applications, battery operation or remote-desktop sessions.
Lively is the only option in this comparison whose project description explicitly covers all of those screensaver-related points. The other projects may be excellent wallpaper tools, but their current screensaver behavior should be confirmed in their own documentation before you depend on them for an idle-display setup.
Why Lively Wallpaper is the strongest free choice
It supports a real Windows screensaver
Lively’s official project description says it provides animated desktop wallpapers and screensavers powered by WinUI 3, and that any wallpaper can be used as a Windows screensaver. That makes it a closer functional substitute for Wallpaper Engine than tools limited to desktop backgrounds.
The Tool Desk

You can import local media by dragging it into the application. Supported wallpaper types listed by the project include video, GIF, webpage and application wallpapers built with Unity or Godot. This range covers ordinary MP4-style loops, animated images, browser-based scenes and interactive demonstrations rather than a single fixed format.
It is designed for more than one monitor
Multiple-monitor support is explicitly listed. That matters if you want one scene stretched across displays, separate scenes on each monitor or a consistent idle experience on a workstation with mixed resolutions. Exact layout behavior can vary with the chosen wallpaper, so test the arrangement after importing content.
Playback uses hardware acceleration
Lively documents hardware-accelerated playback through mpv or VLC. Hardware acceleration can reduce the amount of work done by the CPU, but it is not a guarantee that every video, webpage or application wallpaper will be light on your system. Resolution, frame rate, codec, browser content and graphics drivers still affect power use.
Pause controls protect games and mobile use
The project says Lively pauses automatically when a fullscreen application or game runs. It can also pause on battery power and during remote-desktop sessions. Those rules are especially useful on laptops: the desktop can remain animated while plugged in, then stop drawing frames when unplugged.

How to install and configure Lively safely
- Use an official distribution. Download from the Lively GitHub repository, the Microsoft Store listing or the project’s own installer link. Avoid third-party download aggregators that can repackage installers or bundle unwanted software.
- Check the Windows build. Open
Settings > System > Aboutand confirm your Windows version meets the requirement for the distribution you selected: version 1809 or later for the Store package, or version 1903 or later for the installer. - Install and launch Lively. Allow the application to finish its first-run setup before importing large media files.
- Import a wallpaper. Drag a video, GIF, webpage project or supported application wallpaper into Lively. Start with a short local video so you can verify playback before adding complex interactive content.
- Assign displays. In Lively’s monitor controls, choose whether the wallpaper should apply to one display, each display separately or the available multi-monitor layout. Confirm that the preview appears on the intended screens.
- Open the screensaver controls. Use Lively’s screensaver section to select a wallpaper for idle use. Windows also exposes the standard path
Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver; the exact label can differ by Windows release. - Set pause rules. Leave fullscreen-game pausing enabled unless you specifically want animation during a game. Enable battery and remote-desktop pausing if reduced power or bandwidth is more important than continuous motion.
- Test the complete path. Set a short idle timeout, wait for the screensaver to start, wake the PC, launch a fullscreen application, unplug a laptop if applicable and connect through Remote Desktop. Each test confirms a different pause or activation rule.
ScreenPlay: best when cross-platform coverage matters
ScreenPlay is listed as a free, open-source, cross-platform application for video wallpapers and widgets, with Windows and macOS support. It is a sensible candidate if you use both operating systems or want widgets alongside animated backgrounds.
Its available listing does not establish that it registers wallpapers as native Windows screensavers, nor does it state how it handles multiple monitors, battery suspension or remote-desktop sessions. Treat it as a wallpaper-and-widget platform first. Before replacing a conventional screensaver, open the current official documentation and verify that the release you install exposes the idle-screen behavior you need.
ScreenPlay also has a different content model from Steam Workshop. A free, open-source application can provide the player while leaving you to obtain compatible videos, scenes or widgets from its own community and supported import methods. Do not assume that Wallpaper Engine’s library or one-click subscriptions will be available.

Sucrose Wallpaper Engine: a Windows-focused interactive option
Sucrose is listed as a free, open-source Windows wallpaper engine aimed at interactive wallpapers. It is worth considering when your priority is a Windows-native interactive desktop rather than cross-platform support.
The available description does not establish current Windows-version requirements, a multi-monitor policy, pause behavior for games and fullscreen applications, or native screensaver registration. Those details should be checked in Sucrose’s own documentation for the exact release you plan to install. If the documentation describes only desktop wallpaper playback, use Sucrose for that purpose and keep a separate Windows screensaver configured.
Interactive scenes can be more demanding than a simple looping video. Check whether the project offers frame-rate limits, pause-on-focus-loss or battery controls before deploying it on a laptop or an always-on workstation.
WinDynamicDesktop: time-of-day images instead of animation
WinDynamicDesktop ports macOS Mojave’s Dynamic Desktop behavior to Windows. It uses local sunrise and sunset times and rotates through 16 Mojave wallpaper images over the day and night cycle.
This is a good fit if you want the desktop to reflect morning, afternoon and evening without rendering video or interactive graphics. It is not a direct substitute for a video screensaver: the available description does not present it as one, and it does not establish screensaver registration, media playback or multi-monitor behavior.

- PREPARE FOR A LEVELED-UP MULTIPLAYER: With Black Ops III, Treyarch premieres a new momentum-based chained-movement system, allowing players to fluidly move through the environment with finesse, using controlled thrust jumps, slides, and mantling abilities in a multitude of combinations, all while maintaining complete control over your weapon at all times.
- FIGHT THE UNDEAD IN AN ALL-NEW HORROR STORY: No Treyarch title would be complete without its signature Zombies offering - a full-game experience with its own distinct storyline right out of the box. Black Ops III Zombies is the most immersive and ambitious Call of Duty Zombies to date, with a full XP-based progression system for players that adds depth and re-playability to the engaging gameplay Zombies fans have come to expect.
Because the effect is based on still images and scheduled changes, it is usually a more predictable choice for battery-conscious systems than a continuously animated scene. Exact Windows support and current release status are not stated in the available listing, so verify those details before installation.
Dynamic Theme: automatic still-image rotation
Dynamic Theme is the narrowest option in this comparison. It can use Bing pictures, Windows Spotlight pictures, one selected picture or your own personal pictures as an automatically refreshed Windows background.
Choose it when your definition of a changing background is a new still image rather than movement. It does not replace a video or interactive screensaver according to the available description, and no multi-monitor, battery-pause or remote-desktop behavior is established there. Its simpler job also means fewer playback variables to troubleshoot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow the free options differ from Wallpaper Engine
Wallpaper Engine is a one-time purchase rather than a subscription. Its official site says wallpapers are free and obtained through free Steam Workshop subscriptions. Steam is required to download or upload wallpapers and install updates, but not to run the application’s core features after installation. Wallpaper Engine can also set a wallpaper as a Windows screensaver and pauses playback when games or maximized applications run.
A free alternative can match the visual concept without matching that distribution system. The practical differences are:
- Content volume: Steam Workshop provides a large, integrated catalog. Other apps may rely on local files, project-specific communities or separate download methods.
- Update workflow: Workshop subscriptions can deliver updates through Steam. Open-source alternatives may update through a Store, installer or project release page, depending on the app.
- Screensaver integration: Lively documents it explicitly; ScreenPlay and Sucrose require current-version verification; WinDynamicDesktop and Dynamic Theme are not presented as direct animated screensaver replacements.
- Cost model: Lively, ScreenPlay, Sucrose and WinDynamicDesktop are listed as free and open source. Dynamic Theme is listed as a free Windows app. Wallpaper Engine is a one-time purchase with no subscription.
- Polish and consistency: Different wallpaper engines support different codecs, web technologies, widgets and interactive frameworks. A scene that works in one program may need conversion or a different format in another.
Choosing by your actual requirement
You need a genuine idle-time screensaver
Choose Lively first because its documentation explicitly supports Windows screensavers and allows any wallpaper to be used for that purpose. Verify the screensaver after installation rather than assuming desktop playback automatically registers with Windows.
You want video on the desktop but not necessarily a screensaver
Lively is still the broadest option in this list. ScreenPlay is a reasonable alternative if cross-platform support and widgets are more important than confirmed screensaver behavior.

You want interactive scenes on Windows
Compare Lively’s application-wallpaper support with Sucrose’s Windows-focused interactive approach. Check each project’s current documentation for input handling, pause controls and supported Windows versions before committing to a library of scenes.

- Near-Limitless Gameplay: DOOM SnapMap - A powerful, but easy-to-use game and level editor that allows for limitless gameplay experiences on every platform
You want the lightest conceptual setup
WinDynamicDesktop and Dynamic Theme avoid continuous video rendering by changing still images. They are appropriate when visual variety matters more than animation. No controlled CPU or GPU benchmark is available here, so do not treat either as a proven performance winner for every laptop.
You use several monitors
Lively is the only app in this comparison with explicit multiple-monitor support in its project description. For the other tools, test each display arrangement with your exact resolutions and orientation before relying on it.
Performance, battery and pause behavior
There is no controlled cross-application CPU or GPU benchmark in the available evidence, so it would be misleading to rank these programs as universally light or heavy. Playback cost depends on the media and hardware as much as the application.
Recommended Free Tools
Use these practical controls instead:
- Prefer a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate video when a 4K or high-refresh loop is unnecessary.
- Use Lively’s fullscreen-application pause so games and maximized work apps do not compete with the wallpaper for graphics resources.
- Enable battery pausing on a laptop and observe battery drain over a normal work session.
- Pause wallpaper playback during remote-desktop sessions to avoid sending or rendering animation that cannot improve the remote view.
- For webpages and Unity or Godot applications, watch memory use as well as GPU use; interactive content can consume more resources than a short video loop.
These are configuration decisions, not benchmark results. The same wallpaper can behave differently on integrated graphics, a discrete GPU, an older driver or a high-resolution multi-monitor setup.
Safety and maintenance checklist
- Download Lively from its official GitHub repository, Microsoft Store listing or project installer, not an aggregator.
- For ScreenPlay, Sucrose, WinDynamicDesktop and Dynamic Theme, use the official project or store page after checking the current Windows support and release date.
- Scan downloaded wallpaper files and avoid executable content from unknown publishers, especially application-based wallpapers.
- Keep a simple local video available as a fallback while testing webpages or interactive scenes.
- Record your monitor layout and pause settings before updating an app so you can restore them if a release resets preferences.
- Do not assume that an app is actively maintained merely because an older listing exists; maintenance status for several alternatives is not established by the available descriptions.
Troubleshooting common failures
The desktop animates but the screensaver never starts
Confirm that the app’s screensaver mode is enabled and that Windows’ Screen Saver Settings point to the intended screensaver. Set a short timeout, wait without touching input devices and test again. If the project documentation does not claim native screensaver support, the behavior may be a limitation rather than a configuration error.
A video appears black or has no sound
Test a different local file first. A codec, corrupted file, protected stream or unsupported webpage feature can fail even when the wallpaper application itself is working. Lively’s documented mpv/VLC playback path does not guarantee support for every codec combination.
One monitor is blank
Reopen the application’s monitor assignment, apply a simple wallpaper to each display and check for mixed-resolution or portrait-orientation issues. Lively explicitly supports multiple monitors; behavior in the other tools should be verified for the installed version.

Enable fullscreen-game pausing, close interactive wallpapers that continue running in the background and test with a lightweight video. If the problem disappears when playback is paused, the issue is resource contention rather than a screensaver setting.
The laptop battery drops faster
Enable battery pausing, reduce wallpaper resolution or switch to a still-image tool such as WinDynamicDesktop or Dynamic Theme. Compare battery life with the same workload and no animated wallpaper; do not rely on a generic claim that one application is always more efficient.
Bottom line
Lively Wallpaper is the most complete free replacement for users who want animated desktop backgrounds and a genuine Windows screensaver. It combines explicit screensaver support, multiple-monitor handling, broad media compatibility, hardware-accelerated playback and pause rules for fullscreen apps, battery power and remote desktop. ScreenPlay and Sucrose are worthwhile wallpaper-focused alternatives when their current documentation matches your needs. WinDynamicDesktop and Dynamic Theme are better understood as automatic still-background tools, not video screensaver substitutes.
