For free desktop vector illustration, logos, and SVG production, start with Inkscape. It is a genuinely free, open-source editor for GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS, with SVG at its core and documented import and export for AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG. For browser-based product or interface design with live teamwork, Penpot is the strongest free-first option in this set. Figma is useful when its free Starter limits fit your project. Affinity Designer is capable, but the official Version 2 Universal Licence listed in the available material costs US$164.99, so it should not be described as free without checking a newer offer.
Quick answer: which free Illustrator alternative fits your work?
These applications overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A desktop SVG editor, a browser-based product-design canvas, and a hosted collaboration service solve different problems. Use the table to narrow the choice before moving files or inviting a team.
| Tool | Best fit | Where it runs or how it is delivered | Free-plan or licence facts | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inkscape | Illustration, logos, icons, diagrams, and production SVG files | Desktop application for GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS | Free and open source | Documented format support does not guarantee perfect fidelity for every Illustrator effect or editable feature. |
| Penpot | Collaborative UX, product, and interface design | Browser-based workflow with self-hosting options documented by the project | Vendor describes unlimited projects and collaborators on its free offering; a September 11, 2026 announcement says the core service remains free, unlimited, and open source while Enterprise features are paid. | Best when shared files, comments, inspect mode, and design-system collaboration matter more than a traditional desktop illustration workflow. |
| Figma | Teams already centered on its collaborative canvas | Hosted service; equivalent platform details for every client are not established in the cited material | Starter is free. The current FAQ says Starter allows unlimited files in Drafts and collaboration on up to three files, with three pages per file. | Confirm the current limits before planning a migration because plan terms can change. |
| Affinity Designer | Users seeking a commercial desktop alternative | Desktop software; platform details and current promotions should be checked directly | The official page located for this comparison lists a Version 2 Universal Licence at a one-time US$164.99. | It is an adjacent paid option, not a free recommendation on the evidence available here. |
What “free alternative” should mean for a vector-design workflow
A free download is not automatically a free replacement. Check four separate questions:
- Licence: Is the editor genuinely free to use, or is it a time-limited trial, a restricted viewer, or a plan that charges when a team grows?
- Working environment: Do you need a local application that works with files on your computer, or is a browser canvas acceptable?
- File ownership and handoff: Can you keep source files in an open format, export what a printer or developer needs, and work without a permanent account?
- Feature fit: Are you drawing paths and preparing SVG assets, or coordinating screens, components, comments, and inspection with a product team?
On those criteria, Inkscape is the clearest free desktop choice. Penpot is the clearest free, open-source collaboration choice. Figma can be practical for a small project that stays inside Starter’s documented limits. None should be promised as a perfect substitute for every Illustrator document.

Inkscape: the best free desktop starting point
Why it is the default recommendation
The Inkscape project describes the application as a “powerful, free design tool.” It is open source, runs on GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS, and uses SVG as its native design language. That combination makes it a strong fit for logos, icons, diagrams, decals, illustrations, and web graphics that must remain editable and portable.
SVG keeps paths, fills, strokes, text objects, and other vector data in a format that can be inspected and used by browsers and many other tools. Inkscape’s documentation also covers importing and exporting AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG. Those are useful bridges for mixed-format work, but a list of supported extensions is not a promise that every effect, plug-in result, blend, live shape, or text behavior from an Illustrator file will survive unchanged.
What Inkscape is good at
- Creating scalable logos and marks without committing to a proprietary source format.
- Editing SVG artwork for websites, applications, documentation, and manufacturing workflows that accept vector paths.
- Building technical diagrams, maps, icons, and illustrations on a local computer.
- Exporting raster previews such as PNG while retaining an editable vector master.
- Working across GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS with the same open-source project.
Where you should be cautious
Complex Illustrator documents can contain effects, linked assets, fonts, clipping behavior, color settings, or editable objects that have no one-to-one equivalent in another editor. Inkscape may open the file or produce a PDF, yet still alter appearance or editability. Treat import/export support as an invitation to test, not as a guarantee of parity.
A safe Inkscape migration procedure
- Install the current build for your operating system. Download the GNU/Linux, Windows, or macOS package from the Inkscape project and keep the original Illustrator files untouched.
- Create a representative test set. Include a typical logo, a file with text and brand fonts, an illustration using effects, a document with linked or embedded images, and the export formats your printer, developer, or client actually requests.
- Open copies, not originals. Import one file at a time and inspect page size, layers, clipping paths, gradients, strokes, masks, transparency, and text wrapping.
- Check fonts deliberately. If a font is unavailable, install a licensed equivalent or convert a final copy of the text to paths only when the recipient no longer needs editable type.
- Rebuild or simplify damaged effects. A visually similar result may need to be recreated with native Inkscape objects rather than edited after conversion.
- Export the exact handoff files. Save an editable SVG master, then export PDF, EPS, PNG, or another required format and compare the output in the recipient’s software.
- Record exceptions. Keep a short list of objects that need manual repair so the team knows what conversion will cost on future projects.
Penpot: the free open-source option for collaborative product design
Why teams choose it
Penpot is aimed at browser-based product and interface work rather than replacing every feature of a desktop illustration studio. Its official feature description includes advanced vector editing, real-time collaboration, unlimited projects and collaborators, version history, and inspect mode. Inspect mode is particularly useful when designers and developers need to examine dimensions and implementation details from the same shared design.
Penpot also documents self-hosting options. That matters when an organization needs more control over where project data is operated, or when its workflow cannot depend solely on a vendor-hosted workspace. Self-hosting is an operational responsibility, however: someone must provide infrastructure, upgrades, backups, authentication, and support.

What changed in September 2026
In an announcement dated September 11, 2026, Penpot said its offering remains free, unlimited, and open source while adding a paid Enterprise layer. The practical distinction is that core design and collaboration access can remain available without a per-project or per-collaborator charge, while organizational governance features may be reserved for Enterprise. Confirm the current feature boundary before basing a compliance or procurement decision on it.
When Penpot is a better fit than Inkscape
- A product team needs several people editing or reviewing the same work in real time.
- Designers want version history and a shared workspace rather than exchanging local files.
- Developers need inspectable measurements and assets from the design canvas.
- The organization values open-source software and wants the option to self-host.
Penpot is less obvious as the only tool for elaborate standalone illustrations, especially when the process depends on a local folder of source assets or print-prepress conventions. Many teams can use Inkscape for illustration and Penpot for interface collaboration, provided they define an export and naming convention between the two.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFigma Starter: useful collaboration with explicit limits
What the free tier provides
Figma’s official pricing and FAQ materials describe a free Starter tier. The FAQ states that Starter permits unlimited files in Drafts and collaboration on up to three files, with three pages per file. Those limits are concrete enough to affect a team migration: a small project can fit comfortably, while a growing product library may quickly need a paid plan or a different workflow.
Questions to answer before adopting it
- Will the project stay within three collaborative files and three pages per file?
- Can the team accept a hosted workflow and account-based access?
- What happens to files when a contractor leaves or a project exceeds Starter limits?
- Do developers need inspect and handoff features, and are those features available under the current plan?
Because pricing pages and plan limits change, check the current Starter FAQ immediately before committing. Figma can be the right answer for a team already organized around its canvas, but “free” should be evaluated against the number of active files and collaborators, not just the sign-up price.
Affinity Designer: capable, but not a free pick
Affinity Designer belongs in a comparison because it is often considered alongside Illustrator, yet the official page found for Version 2 lists a Universal Licence at a one-time US$164.99. That is a purchase rather than a free plan. The price may change, and promotions may exist, so verify the current offer if you are considering it, but do not present it as a free alternative on the basis of this figure.

File compatibility: how to avoid an expensive surprise
Compatibility has two dimensions: can the file be opened? and does it remain correct and editable? The documented Inkscape formats answer the first question for many common files, but not the second for every document.
Test these elements in every representative file
- Typography: font availability, line breaks, kerning, variable-font behavior, and whether text must remain editable.
- Effects: blurs, shadows, meshes, live shapes, blends, filters, and transparency groups.
- Linked assets: image paths, embedded images, missing files, color profiles, and resolution.
- Geometry: clipping paths, masks, compound paths, strokes aligned inside or outside a shape, and boolean operations.
- Color: spot colors, overprint settings, RGB versus CMYK expectations, and the proofing process used by the recipient.
- Export behavior: page bounds, bleed, crop marks, SVG namespaces, PDF versions, and rasterization of unsupported objects.
Keep the original source file and a converted copy side by side. Compare the converted file visually at normal size and at high zoom, then open the exported handoff in the software used by the printer, developer, or client. If a file fails this test, a free editor may still be useful for new work; it simply should not be declared a drop-in replacement for that legacy document.
Desktop, browser, and ownership trade-offs
Local desktop workflow
Inkscape keeps the main editing application on your computer and makes an open format central to the workflow. This is convenient for offline work, scripted file management, and retaining local masters. Collaboration usually requires a separate file-sharing or review process.
Hosted browser workflow
Penpot and Figma emphasize shared online canvases. That reduces the friction of sending files back and forth and makes live review practical, but it introduces account, connectivity, permission, and service-availability considerations. Figma’s cited materials describe a hosted plan; they do not establish equivalent platform details for every possible client, so verify the client support you need.

Self-hosting
Penpot documents self-hosting, which can help teams with deployment or data-location requirements. It is not a zero-maintenance switch: budget for servers, backups, monitoring, updates, and access control. A hosted plan may be simpler for a small team even when self-hosting is technically available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical zero-cost setup
- Use Inkscape as the vector master. Store editable SVG files in a versioned project folder and export delivery formats from those masters.
- Use Penpot when several people must work on product screens. Establish a naming convention for components, pages, and exported assets before the project grows.
- Use Figma only when Starter limits match the project. Count collaborative files and pages at the start, not after the workspace is full.
- Define a handoff contract. Specify who supplies SVG, PDF, PNG, or source files; which fonts are licensed; and how converted artwork is approved.
- Run a pilot before switching legacy work. Convert representative files, document exceptions, and estimate manual repair time.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The file opens, but it looks different.”
Check fonts, filters, clipping, blend modes, and linked images first. Rebuild unsupported effects in the destination editor or export a flattened presentation copy while retaining the original editable source.
“The SVG is editable but unusable in the website.”
Inspect the exported markup and test it in the actual browser or application. Remove unnecessary metadata, confirm viewBox and dimensions, and verify that masks, filters, and text render as expected. Keep a clean, purpose-built web export rather than reusing a print-oriented file blindly.
“The free collaboration plan is already full.”
For Figma, count the collaborative files and pages against Starter’s documented three-file and three-page-per-file limits. Archive finished work or evaluate Penpot’s described unlimited free offering instead of assuming the limit will disappear.

Is Inkscape the best open-source alternative to Adobe Illustrator?
For a free, open-source desktop editor, yes: Inkscape is the best-supported starting point in this comparison because its operating-system coverage, SVG focus, and documented format support directly match illustration and vector-production work. “Best” does not mean feature parity with every Illustrator document. A representative-file trial remains necessary for typography, effects, linked assets, and final exports.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open an AI file in a free editor?
Inkscape documents AI among its import and export formats. Open a copy of the file and verify appearance and editability; format support alone does not establish complete fidelity for complex artwork.
Do I need a drawing tablet to use Inkscape?
No. A tablet can be an optional input device for freehand work, but the available product information does not establish one as required or identify a supported model.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which option is best for a nonprofit or school that needs open source?
Choose Inkscape for local illustration and SVG production. Choose Penpot when shared UX work, open-source collaboration, or self-hosting is the priority.
Is Figma Starter unlimited?
Its FAQ describes unlimited files in Drafts, but collaboration is limited to up to three files with three pages per file. Check the current FAQ because plan terms can change.
Should I convert all old Illustrator files immediately?
No. Pilot representative files first, preserve the originals, and migrate only after checking fonts, effects, linked assets, color, and required exports.
