The most reliable FPS resource setup is a readable, persistent HUD with redundant cues: keep ammunition and equipment counts enabled, position and scale them for a fast glance, use color-blind or custom color controls when needed, and back color with text, icons, outlines, prompts, or sound. Turn performance overlays on only while diagnosing a problem. The exact labels differ by game, platform, mode, region, and version, so verify the current menu in your build rather than copying a universal preset.
What a resource-focused FPS setup should accomplish
Ammo, reload state, grenades, equipment charges, ultimate meters, and utility warnings all compete for the same small slice of attention. A good configuration lets you answer four questions without abandoning the fight:
- What do I have? The current magazine, reserve ammunition, equipment count, or charge should be visible.
- What state is it in? A prompt, icon, meter, or animation should distinguish ready, recharging, empty, selected, and unavailable.
- Where is the information? The readout should stay in a predictable location and not be hidden by a monitor edge, overscan, or a custom safe-area setting.
- What happens when it runs out? The game should provide a clear empty-state cue, and any automatic weapon-switching behavior should match your habits.
There is no published controlled statistic showing that one HUD scale, color mode, or cooldown toggle improves every player’s performance by a fixed percentage. Official documentation establishes which controls exist, not a universal improvement figure. Treat the recommendations below as a way to reduce glance time and ambiguity, then verify them in your own practice range or match.

The best baseline settings
| Setting area | Starting choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ammo and equipment readouts | Enabled; large enough to read at normal viewing distance | Current magazine, reserve, firing mode, tactical and lethal counts, and charge state are all visible. |
| HUD position | Use safe margins that keep the resource cluster inside the screen; adjust horizontal and vertical bounds if offered | The readout does not touch an edge, overlap another indicator, or disappear at your usual aspect ratio. |
| HUD scale and opacity | Increase scale until a short glance is sufficient; lower opacity only when it remains legible over bright scenes | Targets and the environment remain visible without making the resource text too faint. |
| Persistent prompts | Enable weapon, ability, equipment, or context prompts when the game provides them | Prompts should clarify selected items and cooldown state without covering the crosshair or target. |
| Color accessibility | Test the game’s color-blind presets or custom ally, enemy, and party colors | Friendly, hostile, warning, and ready colors remain distinct in dark, bright, and effects-heavy scenes. |
| Non-color cues | Keep icons, labels, outlines, meters, subtitles, or audio cues enabled where useful | A player can identify a state even when color is obscured or hard to distinguish. |
| Performance overlay | Enable FPS, latency, packet-loss, or network indicators while troubleshooting; hide them for normal play if they compete with the HUD | The diagnostic display answers a specific question instead of becoming permanent visual noise. |
| Automatic empty behavior | Choose deliberately between automatic weapon switching and manual control | Run an empty-magazine drill to ensure the behavior does not pull you off the weapon you intended to use. |
Set up the HUD in a deliberate order
1. Establish a readable resource cluster
Start in a quiet area, firing range, or custom game rather than changing several options during a live match. Locate the ammunition and equipment information first. In Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare interface, the lower-right Weapons Detail area shows the weapon’s chamber and total ammunition, firing mode, and tactical and lethal equipment counts. Keep that area inside the visible screen and make it large enough to read without leaning toward the display.

Do not optimize for the smallest possible HUD. A compact interface can look clean while forcing repeated, long glances. The useful test is whether you can identify the magazine and reserve count, then return your eyes to the target before the next meaningful enemy movement.
2. Adjust safe-area margins before changing scale
If the game exposes horizontal and vertical HUD margins, move the whole resource cluster away from the edge first. A margin problem can make text appear clipped; increasing scale will not fix clipping and may make it worse. After the margins are correct, change size in small steps and check the result at the resolution and aspect ratio you actually play.
Check menus, spectator views, ultrawide displays, television overscan, and console safe-area settings separately. A layout that is comfortable on a monitor can place the same information too close to the edge on a television.

3. Control opacity and unrelated elements
Opacity is a visibility trade-off, not a decoration setting. Lowering unrelated panels can reduce clutter, but the ammo and cooldown indicators themselves must remain solid enough to survive smoke, fire, bright sky, and rapidly changing backgrounds. If the game lets you hide optional panels, remove those that do not support an immediate decision before making the resource readout smaller.
Keep the crosshair, damage direction, objective information, and resource indicators from occupying the same visual region. A cooldown meter that sits under a damage warning can be technically present yet functionally invisible at the moment you need it.
4. Add persistent prompts where memory is the failure point
Persistent prompts are useful when you repeatedly forget the selected weapon, ability, or equipment state. Apex documents persistent button prompts for weapons and abilities on the HUD, as well as a hop-up pop-up above weapons. These prompts can preserve context after a swap or pickup, so you do not have to reconstruct it from a small icon or from memory.

Keep a prompt only if it answers a real question. If a large prompt blocks your sight picture or duplicates a clearly readable meter, reduce it or disable the optional element. The goal is a faster decision, not the maximum number of labels.

Choose a preset, then test the difficult scenes
Color-blind modes are a practical first test when ally, enemy, warning, and ready colors merge. Apex documents protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia modes. Call of Duty documents a color-blind type selection and separate color choices for player groups. Pick the preset that makes the relevant indicators distinct for you, then test it against foliage, red damage effects, blue sky, dark interiors, and smoke.
Do not assume a preset that improves team colors also improves every resource color. A setting can make squad members easier to identify while making a cooldown ring less distinct. Test each class of cue that affects a decision.
Back color with shape, text, and sound
Color should be one channel among several. A filled or empty icon, a number, a meter length, a distinct outline, a spoken cue, or a sound can carry the same state. Riot’s VALORANT documentation describes visual utility and damage indicators, while Apex lists subtitles, accessible chat, voice-to-text, and text-to-speech options. Use those alternatives when color is unreliable or when effects make the HUD hard to read.
- Use a numeric count for ammunition or charges when available.
- Use an icon shape or meter change to distinguish ready from recharging.
- Keep damage-direction indicators visually different from utility warnings.
- Enable subtitles or text-to-speech when audio-only information is easy to miss.
When you change colors, deliberately check both the normal and depleted states. A ready ability and an empty ability may use related shades that look identical during motion; a different brightness, icon, or label is safer.
Performance overlays: diagnose, then remove the distraction
FPS, latency, packet loss, and network icons explain why a prompt may feel late or why a cooldown appears to update irregularly. They do not replace a resource HUD. Enable the smallest diagnostic set that answers your current question, reproduce the problem, and then hide the overlay if it competes with the information you need during a fight.

Apex
Apex documents an optional display for FPS, latency, and packet loss. Use it to separate a tracking problem from a connection or frame-time problem. If the numbers are stable while you still miss a resource cue, return to HUD position, scale, contrast, and prompt settings instead of leaving the diagnostic display permanently enabled.
VALORANT
VALORANT places performance graphs under Settings > Video > Stats and provides low-client-FPS and network icons. The graphs are useful for finding a performance or connection event that coincides with delayed visual feedback. Hide them during ordinary rounds when the extra lines and labels make utility or damage indicators harder to see.
Game-specific configurations
Apex Legends
Begin with the weapon and ability prompts, then verify the hop-up pop-up above the weapon display. These persistent elements preserve context after looting, swapping, or changing a weapon. Check reticle color and the color-blind mode together; a reticle that is visible against one map can disappear against another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReview the optional performance display when diagnosing stutter or network trouble. Apex also documents an auto-cycle-on-empty option. Test it with both weapons: if the automatic swap gets you moving sooner, it may be helpful; if it repeatedly selects the wrong weapon during a deliberate reload, manual control is safer.
For players who miss spoken or visual information, Apex’s documented accessibility options include subtitles, accessible chat, voice-to-text, and text-to-speech. These features address communication and audio dependence rather than replacing ammunition or ability counts, so keep the numeric HUD readouts visible as well.

Set horizontal and vertical HUD margins before adjusting size. Then select a color-blind type or custom team colors if squad and enemy indicators blend into the scene. Verify the result in a real match with visual effects, not only in a quiet menu.
Modern Call of Duty documentation also describes switching weapons when ammunition is depleted. Decide whether that automatic behavior supports your strategy. If you prefer to choose the backup weapon yourself, practice the empty-magazine transition so the depleted state produces a deliberate reload or manual swap rather than an unexpected change.
VALORANT
Keep utility and damage indicators legible, especially after patches that change how warnings are drawn. Riot describes visual updates to the yellow and red indicators that appear when utility is nearby or when you are taking or about to take damage. Treat those indicators as situational warnings and keep the underlying ability and ammunition information readable in its normal HUD location.
Use Settings > Video > Stats for performance graphs and the low-client-FPS or network icons for diagnosis. Once you have identified a performance issue, return attention to utility timing and damage cues; a permanent graph can consume the same visual space as the information you are trying to track.
Compare configurations by decision quality, not appearance
| Comparison axis | Configuration A: minimal HUD | Configuration B: redundant HUD | How to choose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glance time | Fewer elements and potentially less clutter, but small counts may require a longer look | Larger counts, prompts, and meters are faster to parse | Choose the smallest layout that remains readable at the exact moment you reload or cast. |
| Cue redundancy | One primary color or icon may fail when effects obscure it | Text, shape, color, and audio back one another up | Use redundancy for high-cost mistakes such as an empty weapon or unavailable escape ability. |
| Distraction | Less unrelated information competes for attention | More persistent prompts can cover targets or objectives | Remove optional panels before shrinking essential resource indicators. |
| Failure recovery | An empty state may be easy to miss | Empty prompts, automatic behavior, or clear meters announce the failure | Keep the cue that helps you recover, but test automatic switching so it does not create a new error. |
A configuration is better when it shortens the path from information to action. If a larger prompt causes you to miss an enemy, it has exceeded its value. If a minimalist readout makes you reload with reserve ammunition still available, it is too small or too ambiguous.

You miss the reload or confuse magazine and reserve ammunition
- Move the ammo cluster inward with HUD margins before increasing its size.
- Confirm that the display differentiates chamber or magazine ammunition from total reserve ammunition.
- Check opacity over bright backgrounds and remove nearby optional panels.
- Run an empty-magazine drill and observe whether the game shows a prompt, sound, animation, or automatic weapon change.
You cast an ability that is still recharging
- Enable a persistent ability prompt or cooldown indicator if available.
- Use an icon shape, numeric timer, or meter—not only a color transition—to identify ready versus recharging.
- Place the indicator where your eyes already pass between target checks, rather than in a remote corner.
- Test the indicator after taking damage or entering an effects-heavy area; those are the moments when a subtle cue is most likely to disappear.
You cannot tell allies, enemies, and warnings apart
- Try the game’s color-blind presets, then test custom player-group colors where offered.
- Check red, green, and blue-heavy environments as well as muzzle flash and ability effects.
- Keep outlines, icons, labels, or directional shapes enabled so color is not the sole distinction.
The HUD feels delayed or inconsistent
- Enable the game’s FPS, latency, packet-loss, or network indicators for a short diagnostic session.
- In VALORANT, inspect performance graphs under Settings > Video > Stats and note low-client-FPS or network icons.
- In Apex, use the optional FPS/latency/packet-loss display.
- If performance is stable, return to prompt placement, contrast, and scale; do not treat a diagnostic overlay as the fix.
A five-minute validation drill
- Read without firing: identify the equipped weapon, magazine, reserve, and equipment counts while moving and turning.
- Force an empty state: fire until the magazine is depleted, then observe the warning, sound, prompt, and any automatic weapon switch.
- Trigger a cooldown: use an ability, look away briefly, and return to the indicator. Confirm that ready and recharging states are distinguishable.
- Stress the colors: repeat the checks in a bright outdoor area, a dark interior, and during heavy visual effects.
- Test recovery: intentionally select an unavailable item and confirm that the game gives a cue that leads to a useful action.
- Remove diagnostics: after checking FPS or network behavior, hide graphs and overlays that do not help ordinary decisions.
Change one setting group at a time and repeat the drill. Otherwise you cannot tell whether an improvement came from a margin change, a color mode, a prompt, or simple familiarity.

Review settings after patches and platform changes
HUD labels and availability are not permanent. Riot states that accessibility features may vary by game, platform, mode, region, or version. The same qualification applies when a game changes its interface, adds a new mode, or moves a setting between menus. Recheck resource prompts, color behavior, performance indicators, and automatic empty-ammo behavior after a major update.
Keep a short personal checklist outside the game: ammo readout visible, equipment count visible, ability-ready cue distinct, color mode tested, margins safe, and diagnostics off for normal play. That list is faster than rebuilding your layout after every patch or reinstall.
Accessibility choices that improve resource tracking
Accessibility is not separate from competitive clarity. Subtitles, voice-to-text, text-to-speech, high-contrast choices, and non-color indicators can reduce the number of facts you must infer from a single visual channel. Select only the features that answer a problem you actually experience, because an unused panel still consumes attention.
For hearing-dependent cues, enable a visual equivalent when the game offers one. For vision-dependent cues, keep audio or text equivalents where possible. The strongest setup gives the same state through at least two channels while preserving an uncluttered field of view.
Final configuration checklist
- Ammo shows both the immediate magazine or chamber state and the reserve total.
- Tactical, lethal, equipment, and ability states remain readable at normal viewing distance.
- HUD margins keep essential information inside the screen on your actual display.
- Scale and opacity survive bright scenes without covering the target area.
- Persistent prompts are enabled only where they shorten a real decision.
- Color-blind or custom color choices have been tested in multiple environments.
- Icons, text, outlines, meters, subtitles, or audio back up color where possible.
- Automatic weapon switching on empty has been tested and intentionally selected.
- FPS, latency, packet-loss, and network indicators are used for diagnosis, not left on by habit.
- Settings are rechecked after updates because labels and availability can change by build and platform.
The practical target is simple: you should recognize a resource state during a fight, choose the next action immediately, and recover clearly when the resource is gone. Build around that test rather than around a visually minimal or maximally populated HUD.
