For four people sharing one PS5, start with Sackboy: A Big Adventure for family-friendly platforming, Overcooked! All You Can Eat for chaotic party play, The Ascent or Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands for character-building action, and Vampire Survivors for short, replayable runs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is an excellent arcade candidate, but verify the current PS5 build’s local-player limit because the cited PlayStation description advertises six players on and offline without separately documenting the couch limit.
You will need one compatible controller for each participant. PlayStation’s PS5 multiplayer guidance specifically recommends adding another DualSense wireless controller when expanding a setup, so check that four controllers are paired and assigned before buying a game.

What to check before buying a four-player couch game
Local multiplayer is different from an online player count
A store page can advertise four or more players while splitting that number between online and local participation. For a couch session, look specifically for a local, offline or same-console designation. Overcooked! All You Can Eat and Vampire Survivors have explicit local labels in PlayStation’s current PS5 guide. Sackboy’s developer interview explicitly discusses four-player cooperative play. The PlayStation Blog descriptions for The Ascent and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands establish a four-player PS5 ceiling in a local-multiplayer roundup, while the TMNT description uses a six-player on/offline statement that warrants a build-specific check.
Four players means four controllers
Each person needs a compatible controller connected to the PS5. A DualSense is the straightforward choice; PlayStation’s official setup guidance recommends adding another DualSense when you need more players. Pair and test all four controllers before launching the game, and make sure each one is assigned to a separate user or guest profile when the game asks.

Check edition, platform and availability
Several recommendations have PS4 versions as well as PS5 versions, but player limits can differ by platform. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is listed for up to four players on PS5 and two on PS4. Confirm that you are purchasing the PS5 edition when four people are relying on the advertised limit.
PlayStation’s Play Together collection is a useful way to discover local multiplayer games. PlayStation Plus catalog membership changes by region and date, so verify the current listing for your account rather than assuming a game is included. Prices, discounts and stock also change and should be checked in your region.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Why it is the safest all-ages choice
Sackboy is a 3D platformer built around cooperative movement, timing and navigation rather than complex menus or punishing combat. PlayStation describes support for up to four players, and XDEV producer Mark O’Connor told PlayStation Blog in 2023 that it was “built from the ground up as a four-player co-op adventure.” That design focus matters when the group includes children, first-time players or people with different gaming experience.

How four players cooperate
The stages use physical interactions that let players help, obstruct or reposition one another. The producer specifically highlights ways to cooperate and “target each other,” so the game can support helpful teamwork without removing playful chaos. Catch-up mechanics reduce the frustration of one player falling behind, while some stages require coordinated actions that a solo player cannot reproduce in the same way.
Who should choose it
- Families that want a bright presentation and forgiving onboarding.
- Groups that prefer a complete platforming adventure to short party rounds.
- Players who enjoy discovering optional areas and collectibles together.
Choose Sackboy when the group wants everyone involved in movement and problem solving, with enough structure to keep a multi-hour session moving.
Overcooked! All You Can Eat
The best high-energy party option
PlayStation’s current PS5 local-multiplayer guide labels Overcooked! All You Can Eat “2-4 players | Local competitive and co-op.” That is the clearest four-person couch specification in this list. The collection combines the first Overcooked!, its sequel and downloadable content, giving a group hundreds of kitchen levels instead of a small set of repeated stages.
What four people actually do
Each player takes responsibility for tasks such as preparing ingredients, cooking, serving orders and washing dishes. Kitchens introduce hazards and layouts that force the group to divide work, communicate and change assignments when a plan collapses. Because rounds are timed, even a simple order becomes a coordination exercise when floors shift, fires spread or paths are blocked.

Assist mode makes the collection more flexible
If younger players or newcomers find the standard timers too stressful, the collection includes an assist mode that can slow timers or skip levels. That lets a mixed-skill group keep playing together instead of turning one person’s difficulty into everyone’s stoppage. Experienced groups can leave assist features off for the full time-pressure challenge.
Best use case
Overcooked works particularly well when people want short rounds, loud reactions and an easy hand-off between games. It is less suitable if the group dislikes timers or prefers a calm, story-led campaign.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
Arcade action for a crowd
PlayStation Blog’s 2024 local-multiplayer description lists Shredder’s Revenge for PS4/PS5 with six players on and offline and describes an arcade mode for up to six. That makes it the natural pick for a group that wants classic side-scrolling beat-’em-up action, quick character selection and almost no tutorial overhead.
Important local-player qualification
The cited description does not separately state the exact local limit on the current PS5 build. Before committing to a four-person purchase, open the current store listing or in-game multiplayer menu and confirm that four controllers can join the same console session. Treat the six-player statement as the published ceiling in that PlayStation description, not as a guarantee of the present local configuration.

Beat-’em-ups keep everyone moving through the same screen, so nobody is waiting for a turn or managing a separate map. The arcade structure also makes it easy to fit a run into an evening. Choose it over a slower RPG when the group wants immediate punches, combos and stage-by-stage progress.
The Ascent
A deeper action campaign
The Ascent is an isometric cyberpunk twin-stick shooter. PlayStation Blog’s 2024 roundup lists up to four players on PS4/PS5. Compared with the party games above, it asks the group to invest more time in character development and mission progression.
Builds, loot and combat roles
The game combines upgrades, skills and loot with cover-based combat. Players can adjust their equipment and abilities as the campaign advances, giving the group reasons to revisit loadouts rather than simply replaying a fixed level. Cover and enemy positioning reward players who spread out, focus targets and revive or protect teammates instead of firing in the same direction.

When to pick it
- Choose it for a group that wants a shared campaign with persistent progression.
- Expect a steeper learning curve than Sackboy or Overcooked.
- Plan longer sessions, because the appeal comes from building characters over multiple missions.
Use the current PS5 listing to confirm the available local mode before purchase, particularly if you are comparing editions or a digital bundle.

Four-player fantasy FPS with loot
PlayStation Blog’s 2024 listing gives Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands a four-player limit on PS5 and two players on PS4. It blends first-person shooting with a fantasy setting, customizable classes, melee weapons, spells and guns. That mix suits a group that wants the familiar rhythm of collecting better equipment while still having distinct character builds.
Why the class system matters in a group
Customizable classes let players experiment with different abilities and equipment rather than making all four characters feel identical. One player can prioritize a close-range setup, another can emphasize spells and a third can build around firearms. The variety gives repeat sessions a reason to try new combinations.
Choose the PS5 version for four players
The published player counts differ by platform: up to four on PS5 and two on PS4. If your party is planning around four people, check the platform label carefully and verify the current local multiplayer behavior in the store description or game menu.

Short, repeatable runs with shared decisions
PlayStation’s current PS5 local-multiplayer guide labels Vampire Survivors “2-4 players | Local co-op.” The game is built around surviving waves of enemies while weapons attack automatically, so the group can focus on movement, positioning and choosing upgrades instead of aiming every shot.

How four-player coordination works
Players make shared level-up decisions, and the four-player format uses reduced weapon slots. That limitation makes coordination meaningful: the group has to discuss which upgrades matter most instead of allowing every character to accumulate an unrestricted arsenal. Spreading out for experience and regrouping around dangerous waves becomes part of the strategy.
Best for quick sessions
A run is easy to start and restart, making Vampire Survivors useful when the group has an hour rather than an entire evening. It also has strong replay value because different upgrade choices change how a run develops. Pick it when everyone enjoys experimentation and shared planning more than a linear story.

How to choose by group and mood
If ages and skill levels are mixed
Start with Sackboy. Its cooperative platforming, catch-up mechanics and physical interactions give experienced players ways to help without removing the fun for beginners.
If you want laughter and competition
Choose Overcooked! All You Can Eat. The local competitive and co-op label covers both cooperative kitchen work and the option to turn the same collection into a friendly contest.
If everyone wants arcade immediacy
Try Shredder’s Revenge after confirming the current local limit. It gets a group into action quickly and does not require learning a complex build system first.
If the group wants a campaign and character growth
Compare The Ascent and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. The Ascent emphasizes isometric shooting, cover and cyberpunk progression; Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands emphasizes first-person combat, classes, spells, melee weapons and guns. Both are better choices for recurring sessions than for a single short gathering.
If sessions will be short or irregular
Vampire Survivors is the easiest fit. Runs are self-contained, four people can make decisions together and the group can stop without losing a long campaign checkpoint.
Four-player PS5 setup checklist
- Count controllers. Have four compatible controllers ready; PlayStation’s setup guidance recommends adding another DualSense when expanding a PS5 multiplayer setup.
- Pair each controller. Connect a controller to the PS5 if it has not been paired, press its PS button and follow the on-screen user or guest assignment prompt.
- Assign separate players. Give each controller its own user or guest profile so the game can distinguish all participants.
- Launch the correct edition. For Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands in particular, select the PS5 version if four players are required; the cited PS4 limit is two.
- Open the local mode. In the game’s multiplayer menu, choose local, couch or same-console play rather than an online-only option.
- Test before inviting the whole group. Join with all four controllers at the title screen or lobby. This catches pairing, account and edition problems before a session starts.
Common problems and practical fixes
Only one or two players appear
Check that every controller is connected and assigned, then return to the game’s lobby and join again. If the game still shows fewer slots, confirm that you launched the PS5 edition and that the title actually supports four local players in the current build.

The store page says four players, but couch play is unclear
Look for separate local and online wording rather than relying on the headline player count. This is especially important for Shredder’s Revenge, whose cited PlayStation description advertises six players on and offline without documenting the exact current local limit.
A younger or less experienced player is struggling
Use Sackboy’s catch-up-oriented design or enable Overcooked! All You Can Eat’s assist mode. In Overcooked, assist mode can slow timers or skip levels, preserving a shared session without requiring every player to master the standard difficulty.
