Xonotic is the clearest verified native-Linux alternative to Fortnite. It is a free, fast arena shooter with official Linux downloads and online multiplayer, so it delivers the shooting, movement and match-play energy many Fortnite players want without a Windows compatibility layer. It is not a battle royale and has no construction system, however.
That distinction matters. Fortnite is not currently confirmed as native Linux software. Epic has described a plan to pilot “EAC Linux v2” in Fortnite, but a planned pilot is not proof of present availability. Proton can run Windows games on Linux through Steam Play, yet Proton compatibility is different from a native Linux port.
Quick answer: which Fortnite alternative should you install on Linux?
If your priority is a native Linux shooter that you can download and launch without Proton, start with Xonotic. Team Xonotic describes it as “The Free and Fast Arena Shooter,” and its official project site provides Linux downloads. It supports fast competitive shooting and multiplayer match play.

Native Linux, Proton and Fortnite: three different situations
Before comparing games, separate the terms that are often mixed together.
Native Linux game
A native game has a Linux build supplied by its developer or project. The executable is compiled for Linux and does not need Windows compatibility software. Xonotic fits this definition because its official downloads include a Linux package, and its FAQ distinguishes the Linux game executable from the dedicated-server binary.
Windows game running through Proton
Ubuntu’s Steam documentation describes Proton as Valve software that lets Windows games run on Linux through Steam Play. Valve’s support material likewise presents Steam Play as a way for some Windows-only games to work on Linux. Proton uses Wine and related components; it does not turn the Windows build into a native Linux port.

Fortnite’s unresolved Linux status
Epic Online Services says Easy Anti-Cheat has supported native Linux clients since 2014 and Windows builds through Wine or Proton since 2021. Epic also said it planned to pilot “EAC Linux v2” in Fortnite. That wording describes ongoing work, not a guarantee that the current Fortnite client is a supported native Linux release. Anti-cheat support can change independently of the graphics engine, launcher or game files.

Xonotic: what you actually get
Fast arena combat
Xonotic is built around rapid arena matches. The appeal for a Fortnite player is immediate control over movement, weapons and firefights rather than a long setup phase. You join a match, fight in a defined arena and repeat the cycle. That makes it a natural fit when the part of Fortnite you miss most is quick online shooting.

Official Linux support
The Xonotic project provides Linux downloads and documents the Linux executable in its FAQ. The same documentation distinguishes that client executable from the dedicated-server binary. Download the game package intended for players; do not launch the server binary when you want to play a match.
Where it stops being a Fortnite substitute
- It is an arena FPS rather than a battle royale.
- It does not reproduce Fortnite’s construction mechanics.
- The cited material does not establish a Fortnite-sized player population or a current population trend.

Installing Xonotic on a Linux desktop
The project’s distribution is a downloadable Linux package rather than a Windows launcher that must be wrapped in Proton. The exact archive name and desktop integration can vary between releases, so use the current package and instructions published by Team Xonotic.
- Open the official Xonotic project site and select its Linux download.
- Save the Linux archive somewhere you can find it, such as your Downloads folder.
- Extract the archive with your desktop file manager or archive utility.
- Open the extracted Xonotic directory and identify the client game executable. The FAQ also lists a dedicated-server binary; that file is for hosting a server, not for joining the game as a player.
- If your desktop marks the file as non-executable, open its file Properties and enable the option equivalent to Allow executing as a program. Linux desktop labels differ, but the goal is to grant execute permission to the client file.
- Launch the client executable. If your desktop asks whether to run or display the file, choose the run option.
- Use the game’s multiplayer browser to look for available matches. If no servers appear, first confirm that the game itself reaches its menu; a menu launch proves the native client works even when the server list is temporarily empty.
Do not infer that a server binary is a second game client. The project’s FAQ separates those roles specifically, which helps avoid launching the wrong executable.

Checking that a game is really native
Use three checks when a store page or launcher makes a vague “Linux compatible” claim:

- Look for a Linux build from the developer. Xonotic’s official Linux package satisfies this check.
- Check whether Proton is enabled. In Steam, a Windows title forced to run with Proton is a compatibility-layer installation, not a native port.
- Identify the executable and documentation. Native documentation should describe a Linux client, as Xonotic’s FAQ does.
A successful launch alone does not prove native support. A Windows game can launch successfully through Proton, and a native game can still require separate troubleshooting for graphics drivers, audio or networking.
Multiplayer reliability and anti-cheat
Genre similarity is only one part of choosing an online game. Anti-cheat and server support can determine whether a title is playable on a given Linux setup.
Xonotic
The supplied Xonotic information confirms Linux downloads and multiplayer modes but does not specify an anti-cheat technology, a service-level guarantee or an authoritative concurrent-player number. Do not promise a Fortnite-like population. Instead, open the in-game server browser after installation and judge whether the available rooms match your preferred play times and modes.
Proton games
Proton handles the Windows program layer; it cannot make every anti-cheat implementation compatible. A title may install, render correctly and still reject Linux players when its anti-cheat service does not support the particular Proton configuration. Check the game developer’s current Linux or anti-cheat statement before buying a game specifically for Linux multiplayer.

Fortnite
Epic’s statement that EAC Linux v2 was planned for a pilot should be read as a status caveat. It does not establish that the current Fortnite build accepts Linux clients, that the Epic launcher is supported natively, or that a Proton configuration will pass authentication. Those are separate technical conditions.
Which Fortnite features Xonotic matches
- Competitive shooting: Both center the experience on aiming, weapon choice, movement and outplaying opponents.
- Online matches: Xonotic provides multiplayer match play without requiring a Windows game build.

Investigate Proton when the format matters more than native status

- You are willing to verify the individual game’s current anti-cheat policy.
- You understand that a successful Proton launch can stop working after a game or anti-cheat update.
- You can troubleshoot a compatibility layer rather than expecting Linux-native documentation.
Do not treat an unconfirmed Fortnite pilot as a current solution
If your goal is Fortnite itself, wait for an explicit current compatibility statement from Epic or a confirmed supported client. A future pilot announcement is useful evidence of intent, but it is not an installation method.

The download opens as text or does nothing
The client file may not have execute permission, or the archive may not have been fully extracted. Re-extract the Linux package, open the file’s Properties, enable execution if your desktop offers that control, and launch the client file from the extracted directory.

You launched a server window instead of the game
Close it and return to the extracted directory. Xonotic documents separate client and dedicated-server executables. Select the client executable for local play; the server binary is intended to host a dedicated server.
The game starts but no multiplayer rooms appear
Separate client startup from server availability. If the main menu loads, the native executable is running. Check your network connection, refresh the server browser and try again at another time. Graphics or frame rate are poor
