Best budget choice: a 12V, 30A SPDT relay such as Jaycar’s SY4046 is the lowest-cost option for replacing a matching relay in an existing circuit. If you are adding auxiliary lights and need all the wiring, the Auxbeam dual-output harness is the more complete package at a listed $27.99, with a 40A relay, 30A fuse, switch and 16 AWG leads. Neither listing proves fitment for an unspecified vehicle. Match the pinout, trigger logic, fuse, wire, connectors and total lamp load to your car before buying.

What you are actually buying: a relay or a wiring system?

“Fog-light relay” can mean two very different purchases. A replacement relay is a small switching component for a circuit that already has the correct socket, fuse, switch and wiring. A complete harness is an installation kit for adding lights when the vehicle has no suitable relay wiring.

These jobs should not be compared by amp rating alone. A standalone relay can be inexpensive and still be wrong if its terminals, coil suppression or switching arrangement do not match the original. A harness can include a correctly rated relay yet remain unsuitable if its wire, fuse, connectors or control logic do not match the vehicle.

Search-result snippet described a 5-pin, 12V, 40A SPDT relay with socket lead $6.99 in the snippet The product page could not be inspected. Treat the price and pin configuration as unverified; do not select it without confirming the listing and terminal layout.

How to read these prices

The Jaycar figure is explicitly in Australian dollars. The Auxbeam and K2 pages display dollar prices without a currency qualification in the captured listings, so do not assume they are directly comparable with the Australian price. The iJDMTOY figure is from a search-result snippet rather than a verified product page. Check current currency, stock, shipping, taxes and return terms at purchase.

Best choice for a relay replacement: Jaycar SY4046

The SY4046 is the clearest low-cost match when your vehicle already uses a compatible 12V SPDT relay. Its stated 30A switching rating is appropriate only when the rest of the circuit is designed for the same load. The listing names fog lamps and driving lights among its intended uses, but that wording is not confirmation that it plugs into your car.

When it makes sense

  • Your service information identifies a 12V SPDT relay.
  • The socket terminal positions correspond to the SY4046 pinout.
  • The coil is triggered with the same polarity and control method as the original.
  • The existing fuse, wire and connectors are suitable for the lamps.

When not to substitute it

Do not install a relay solely because its headline amperage is higher than the failed part. A vehicle may use a normally open relay, a changeover SPDT relay, an internal resistor or diode, or a different terminal arrangement. A mismatch can prevent the lights from working, damage a control module or defeat a factory interlock. Compare the original part number, diagram and socket numbering before ordering.

At 12V, 240W corresponds to about 20A under a simple steady-load calculation. That does not make every pair of 120W lamps suitable: LED drivers and incandescent lamps can have different startup behavior, and the harness maximum is a vendor limit rather than an independently measured performance result. Verify each lamp’s actual wattage and any inrush specification, then keep the total within the product’s stated limit and the fuse and wire design.

What the kit solves

  • It supplies a relay and fuse instead of requiring you to source each separately.
  • The dual output connectors simplify wiring two lamps.
  • The included switch provides a manual control path when the vehicle’s factory control system is not being integrated.
  • The replaceable fuse makes future service easier than a sealed, non-serviceable protection device.

What it does not solve

The kit does not prove that its switch can be connected legally or safely to every vehicle, nor that its trigger should be connected to battery positive, an ignition source, a factory fog-light signal or a ground-side control. It also does not replace the need for a properly sized ground and secure, weather-protected connections. Follow the vehicle wiring diagram and the vendor’s warning to have the installation completed by professionals or under professional guidance.

When the K2 harness is worth considering

K2’s universal harness lists a 12V 40A relay, a replaceable 30A fuse, up to 2.5m of wiring and a switch for $19.99. However, the captured page showed the item unavailable or backordered. Availability therefore matters as much as the attractive price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

K2 also states that its diagram is general and that particular vehicles may require additional provisions. Installation instructions are not included. If you choose this type of kit, obtain the wiring diagram before purchase and confirm where the fuse, relay, switch and grounds will be mounted. A general diagram cannot tell you whether your vehicle switches the lamp circuit on the positive side or the ground side.

How to check whether a 12V relay fits your car

  1. Identify the original relay. Read the part number and the diagram printed on the relay or in the vehicle service information. Record the terminal numbers and whether the relay is SPST or SPDT.
  2. Confirm coil voltage. A 12V relay is intended for a nominal 12V automotive system. Do not infer compatibility from the connector shape alone.
  3. Match the pinout. Compare coil and contact terminals one by one. A five-pin relay can still have a different internal arrangement from another five-pin relay.
  4. Check suppression. If the original relay specifies a diode or resistor, the replacement must use the compatible polarity and suppression type. A diode-equipped relay installed backward can stop the coil from energizing or harm the driver circuit.
  5. Check switching logic. Determine whether the vehicle switches battery positive or ground and whether the relay is controlled by a body module. Preserve the factory fog-lamp or headlamp interlock rather than bypassing it casually.
  6. Check the load path. Verify fuse rating and placement, wire gauge, connector rating, ground quality and the lamps’ combined wattage. The relay rating is only one part of this chain.
  7. Confirm physical and environmental fit. The relay must seat securely, and any socket or harness should be protected from water, heat, abrasion and moving parts.

If any step is unclear, use the vehicle manufacturer’s service information or a qualified automotive installer. The listings reviewed here do not establish fitment for any specific year, make, model or trim.

Is a 40A relay enough for fog lights?

Not by itself. A 40A contact rating describes the relay’s switching capacity under the manufacturer’s conditions; it does not certify the entire harness. The fuse, wire gauge, terminals, connectors, ground, lamp load and product wattage limit must all be compatible.

For the Auxbeam kit, the 40A relay is paired with a 30A fuse and a stated 240W maximum. That combination illustrates why the largest number on the package is not the operating target. The 30A fuse is intended to protect the harness, while the 240W limit is the seller’s stated product ceiling. Never “upgrade” the fuse to stop nuisance blowing without finding the fault; doing so can leave undersized wire unprotected.

Use the lamp load, not the relay label, as the starting point

  • Add the rated wattage of both lamps and account for any driver or ballast requirements.
  • At nominal 12V, estimate steady current as watts divided by volts, then allow for startup behavior and charging-system voltage.
  • Compare that current with the harness’s stated maximum, fuse rating, wire gauge and connector rating.
  • Ensure the ground path can carry the same current without heating or voltage drop.

Installing a complete harness safely

The following is a planning sequence, not a vehicle-specific wiring diagram. Terminal numbers and trigger connections vary, so use the harness instructions and your vehicle service information.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal before routing or terminating wires, following the vehicle’s procedures for radio codes, alarms and other stored settings.
  2. Plan component locations. Keep the relay and fuse holder away from exhaust heat and splash, put the switch where it cannot interfere with driving, and route wires away from belts, fans, steering and sharp edges.
  3. Mount the lamps and establish grounds. Use clean, solid grounding points or the specified harness ground. Paint, rust and loose fasteners can create high resistance.
  4. Route and secure the power lead. The main fuse should be as close to the battery or power source as the harness instructions specify. Protect pass-throughs with suitable grommets.
  5. Connect the relay and outputs exactly as diagrammed. Do not assume similarly shaped terminals have the same function. Confirm coil polarity when a suppression diode is present.
  6. Connect the switch or vehicle trigger. Determine whether the chosen trigger is a switched positive or switched ground. Preserve any factory interlock and avoid tapping a circuit that cannot support the relay coil.
  7. Inspect every connection. Check crimp quality, connector locks, insulation, strain relief and weather sealing before reconnecting the battery.
  8. Test in stages. Test the switch and relay first, then both lamps. Watch for fuse heating, flicker, hot wires, buzzing, voltage drop or unexpected operation with the headlamps off.

A professional should handle the work if you cannot identify the vehicle trigger, verify the fuse location or safely protect the wiring. Auxbeam explicitly recommends professional installation or installation under professional guidance.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely checks Do not do this
Relay clicks but lamps stay off Check output terminal selection, lamp grounds, connector seating, fuse continuity and voltage at each lamp. Do not replace the fuse with a larger one without diagnosing the circuit.
No click and no lamp output Check coil power, coil ground or trigger polarity, the control switch and the relay pinout. Do not bridge terminals randomly; a diode-suppressed coil can be polarity-sensitive.
Fuse blows immediately Look for a shorted wire, pinched cable, reversed connection, damaged lamp lead or a load above the harness limit. Do not keep fitting replacement fuses or bypass the fuse.
Lights flicker or wires become warm Inspect grounds, crimp joints, connector ratings, wire gauge, voltage drop and lamp startup current. Do not assume a 40A relay makes a hot 16 AWG circuit safe.
Lights operate with the wrong switch or at the wrong time Recheck positive-versus-ground switching, factory interlocks and body-module control logic. Do not defeat a factory headlamp or fog-lamp interlock without confirming the legal and electrical consequences.

How to choose among the listings

Choose the Jaycar relay when replacing a known matching part

Select the SY4046 when the existing socket and documentation call for a 12V, 30A SPDT relay and you already have the rest of the circuit. Its low listed price is meaningful only because it is a single component; you may still need a socket, fuse, switch or repair to the original wiring.

Choose the Auxbeam harness when you need the complete basic circuit

The Auxbeam kit has the most clearly stated contents for a two-light add-on: switch, dual outputs, 16 AWG wire, 30A replaceable fuse and 40A relay. Verify the 240W limit against your lamps and plan for professional help if the vehicle trigger or legal operating conditions are uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the K2 harness only after checking availability and instructions

The K2 listing is cheaper than the Auxbeam example but was shown as unavailable or backordered, and it does not include installation instructions. Obtain the diagram and confirm stock before treating it as a practical purchase.

Do not buy the unverified snippet on price alone

The iJDMTOY search snippet’s $6.99 figure and 5-pin, 12V, 40A SPDT description were not confirmed on the product page. A snippet is insufficient evidence for pinout, socket compatibility, suppression or current availability.

What to look for in any listing

  • Voltage: 12V DC for the vehicle circuit, with the coil and contacts specified.
  • Configuration: SPST versus SPDT, normally open versus changeover contacts, and a clearly documented terminal map.
  • Suppression: diode or resistor details when the vehicle’s control module requires them.
  • Protection: fuse value, replaceability and the recommended placement near the power source.
  • Conductors: wire gauge, length, insulation and temperature or abrasion protection.
  • Connections: socket type, output connectors, crimp quality and weather resistance.
  • Load limit: total lamp wattage or current, including any stated maximum such as 240W.
  • Control method: included switch, trigger polarity and compatibility with the vehicle’s interlocks.
  • Support: a complete diagram, installation instructions, returns and current stock.

Do not treat brand anecdotes as engineering evidence

A Reddit discussion asks for a reputable brand for a fog-light harness and switch. That is useful as a reminder that buyers value dependable wiring, but it is anecdotal and does not establish a failure rate, universal fit or comparative performance. The safer selection method is to verify the electrical and physical specifications above and obtain vehicle-specific help when needed.

Legal and vehicle-specific limits

Fog-light operation can be restricted by local road rules, and those rules vary by jurisdiction. The available product information does not establish the requirements for any particular location. Before wiring an auxiliary circuit, check the vehicle documentation and applicable lighting rules for mounting, aiming, switch operation and when the lamps may be used. Keep factory safety interlocks where possible.

Bottom line

For a confirmed relay replacement, the Jaycar SY4046 is the lowest-priced documented example at $7.95 AUD, provided your vehicle truly requires a 12V 30A SPDT relay with the same pinout and suppression arrangement. For a new two-light circuit, the Auxbeam ZD000691 offers the clearest under-$30 package at a listed $27.99, but its 240W limit, 30A fuse and 16 AWG wiring still have to match the lamps and installation. The K2 kit is a possible alternative when backorder status clears and its general diagram fits your plan. Treat the unverified iJDMTOY snippet as a lead, not a recommendation.
