For most Game Boy owners, the choice is between the Krikzz EverDrive GB X7 and the EZ-FLASH Junior. Choose the EverDrive GB X7 if save states are the feature you care about most. Choose the EZ-FLASH Junior if you want an SD-card workflow, a real-time clock (RTC), firmware and kernel updates, and a replaceable battery for Game Boy and Game Boy Color software.

Both are intended for running homebrew and legally owned cartridge backups on real hardware. Neither should be treated as universally compatible: mapper behavior, save type, RTC requirements, firmware, and the individual game can affect results.

Quick verdict

Cartridge Best for Key documented features Main qualification
Krikzz EverDrive GB X7 Premium users who want save states A 2025 review specifically highlights save-state support Check the current authorized listing for price, stock, warranty, hardware details, and the exact compatibility scope
EZ-FLASH Junior SD-based loading and broad practical features GB/GBC loading, instant load, RTC, fast reset to menu, FAT32 4–32 GB SD-card support, upgradable firmware and kernel, replaceable battery, 64-Mbit maximum game size, and 1-Mbit maximum save size The manufacturer’s specification requires a compatible FAT32 SD card; price and availability change

If your priority is simply loading homebrew on an original Game Boy, either product can be suitable when the title’s mapper and save implementation are supported. If you play clock-dependent games such as Pokémon Gold, Silver, or Crystal, put RTC support near the top of your checklist. If you want to suspend a game and resume at an exact point, the EverDrive GB X7’s documented save-state feature is the deciding advantage.

What a Game Boy flash cartridge does

A flash cartridge is a replacement cartridge that loads software from rewritable storage and presents it to the Game Boy as a normal game. Instead of changing physical ROM cartridges, you copy legally obtained homebrew or backup files to the flash cart, insert it into the console, and select a title from the cart’s menu.

#1 Best Overall
Zopsc Flash Memory Card for Gameboy, Purple Transparent, 8G
  • [POWERFUL PERFORMANCE] Unlock the full potential of your Gameboy with this multifunctional flash card. Store and play 1000+ classic games effortlessly on a single cartridge. • [HIGH COMPATIBILITY] Works flawlessly with Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and GBA SP consoles. Supports games up to 64Mbit and various MAPPERS including MBC1, MBC2, MBC3, and MBC5. Enjoy broad compatibility with your favorite classic titles without technical hiccups.
  • [AUTOMATIC BACKUP] Effortlessly backup your game progress with automatic saving to the built-in 8G memory card. No manual intervention required – your game data remains secure and intact even when switching between different games.
  • [USER-FRIENDLY DESIGN] Features customizable A/B functions and one-touch return to menu for enhanced convenience. The energy-saving technology extends battery life, allowing for longer gaming sessions without frequent interruptions.
  • [PREMIUM STABILITY] Experience reliable performance with stable data storage that prevents loss or corruption. The durable ABS construction ensures longevity while the transparent purple design adds a stylish touch to your gaming setup.

That convenience does not remove the Game Boy’s hardware limits. A cartridge still has to emulate or implement the mapper used by the game, preserve the game’s save format, and provide special hardware such as an RTC when the software expects it. A title can therefore work on one flash cart and fail on another even when both advertise Game Boy support.

Use “backup” to mean a copy of a cartridge you own or software you are otherwise legally entitled to use. Homebrew is the least ambiguous use case. The cartridges do not grant permission to download copyrighted ROMs from unauthorized sources.

Compatibility with Game Boy hardware

The EZ-FLASH Junior’s official specification lists support for the original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance/SP. It is designed for Game Boy and Game Boy Color game loading, so it is the practical option when one cartridge must move among those systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The EverDrive GB X7 is also a Game Boy flash cartridge, but the available 2025 review does not establish every console, mapper, or title-level compatibility detail. Verify the current authorized product documentation if you need a specific combination such as an unusual Game Boy revision or a particular homebrew mapper.

Physical fit and power draw are important on aging handhelds. Confirm the current product documentation for the cartridge’s shell dimensions, clearance, and power requirements before buying for a modified console, a tight case, or a system with a marginal battery. Do not assume that a cartridge that fits a standard shell will fit every aftermarket housing.

Why choose the EverDrive GB X7

Save states are the differentiator

The strongest documented reason to pick the EverDrive GB X7 is save-state support highlighted by a 2025 review. A save state captures the current position so you can resume without reaching an in-game save point. That is useful for difficult sections, short play sessions, testing homebrew, and games with inconvenient save systems.

  • Quick Reset Function: Fast reset to menu by squeezing the cartridge. Mapper supports: MBC1, MBC2, MBC3, MBC5, MBC1M, MBC30

Save states are separate from the game’s ordinary battery-backed save. Treat them as an extra convenience, not as a substitute for making normal in-game saves. When a title uses an unusual mapper or save mechanism, verify that both ordinary saves and save states are supported as expected.

Who should buy it

  • Players who rank save states above SD-card capacity or a replaceable battery.
  • Collectors who want a premium flash-cartridge experience and are prepared to check current documentation for revision-specific details.
  • Homebrew developers who benefit from repeatedly restarting at a known point while testing.

What to verify before ordering

The available review does not establish a current price, stock position, warranty, universal game compatibility, power draw, or physical-fit guarantee. Use the current authorized listing for those decisions. If your must-play title depends on RTC, a rare mapper, or an unusual save type, confirm that exact title rather than relying on the product name alone.

Why choose the EZ-FLASH Junior

It is the practical SD-based option

EZ-FLASH documents Game Boy and Game Boy Color support, instant loading, an RTC, fast reset to the menu, firmware and kernel updates, a replaceable battery, and support for FAT32 SD cards from 4 GB through 32 GB. Those features make the Junior straightforward for a library of homebrew and legally owned backups.

Capacity limits in context

The official specification lists a maximum game size of 64 Mbits and a maximum save size of 1 Mbit. Most ordinary Game Boy and Game Boy Color releases are far below those limits, but a homebrew author can choose a larger image or a nonstandard save arrangement. Check the title’s requirements before assuming that a file will load correctly.

RTC and battery maintenance

An RTC matters when a game’s mechanics depend on the passage of time, such as scheduled events, day/night changes, or timed growth. Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal are common examples of software for which RTC behavior is relevant. The Junior’s replaceable battery is useful because the clock and some save workflows depend on battery-backed hardware. Follow the manufacturer’s battery and save-management instructions; replace the battery only with the specified type and avoid interrupting a save operation.

Who should buy it

  • Players who want to copy files to an SD card instead of using a more specialized loading workflow.
  • Owners of several Game Boy generations who need one cartridge for Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance/SP hardware listed by EZ-FLASH.
  • Anyone whose library includes RTC-dependent games and who values a replaceable battery.

How to set up the EZ-FLASH Junior

The following process follows the documented SD-card and update model. Menu names can change with a kernel release, so use the current EZ-FLASH instructions if a label differs.

  1. Choose a compatible card. Use an SD or microSD card in the 4–32 GB range and format it as FAT32. A card outside that capacity range or using another file system does not match the published specification.
  2. Back up the card first. Keep a copy of the card’s contents on your computer. This gives you a recovery path if an update or file operation goes wrong.
  3. Install the current kernel and firmware. Download update files only from the manufacturer or an authorized support source, copy them exactly as instructed, and do not power off the Game Boy during an update.
  4. Create a simple library layout. Put homebrew and legally obtained backup files in clearly named folders. Avoid deeply nested paths and duplicate filenames while you are troubleshooting.
  5. Insert the card and cartridge with the console off. Make sure the card is fully seated, then insert the Junior into the Game Boy before powering on.
  6. Load a test title. Start with a small, known-compatible homebrew game. Confirm that the menu appears, the game launches, and a normal in-game save can be created.
  7. Test the clock-dependent title separately. For an RTC game, set the game’s time, power down normally, wait, and check whether the expected time-based behavior returns. Follow EZ-FLASH’s save-management instructions before removing the cartridge or changing its battery.

Do not fill the card with a large library before testing the basic path. A short, controlled test makes it easier to tell whether a problem comes from the card format, kernel, file, mapper, or save hardware.

Loading homebrew and legal backups safely

Use clean, correctly built files

Obtain homebrew from its developer or project release page and create backups only from cartridges and software you are entitled to use. Keep the original file name and any accompanying documentation until you know the title works. If a developer supplies a required mapper, save type, patch, or minimum firmware version, follow that requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep saves organized

Do not remove the cartridge while a game is saving. Exit to the flash-cart menu using the documented reset method, wait for the save process to finish, and then power down. Maintain a second copy of important save files on a computer. A backup protects progress if a battery reaches the end of its life or a file system becomes corrupted.

Separate test and everyday folders

Place experimental builds in a test folder and stable releases in an everyday folder. This avoids accidentally replacing a working build with a development image and helps identify whether a new version introduced a mapper or save problem.

RTC, saves, and save states: what is different

Real-time clock

An RTC keeps time while the console is off so software can implement calendars, daily events, or time-based changes. RTC support is a cartridge feature, not something every Game Boy game needs. If a title never reads a clock, RTC should not determine your purchase; if it does, verify the cartridge’s RTC implementation and follow its battery instructions.

Ordinary game saves

In-game saves are written in the format expected by the title’s mapper and save hardware. The EZ-FLASH Junior specification lists a 1-Mbit maximum save size, but a game can still fail if its save type is unusual or if the file is not written back before shutdown. Always test a save, power-cycle the console, and load it again before committing to a long playthrough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save states

A save state is a snapshot of the emulator-like cartridge environment, not the same file as an in-game save. The EverDrive GB X7 is the option in this comparison with save-state support specifically highlighted by the cited 2025 review. Because behavior is cartridge-specific, do not assume that a state created on one product can be moved to another or that every game handles states identically.

Mapper and title compatibility

Game Boy cartridges use mapper families to switch ROM and RAM banks. The compatibility reference identifies mapper and save implementation as the reasons unusual titles can behave differently across flash cartridges, and it lists EverDrive, EZFLASH, and BennVenn as common vendors. The EZ-FLASH Junior specification lists support for MBC1, MBC2, MBC3, MBC5, MBC1M, and MBC30.

  • Premium Build — High-quality black ENIG process motherboard, new FPGA chip, onboard bus buffer for stable 5V performance and reliable operation

Before buying for a specific game, check four items:

  • Mapper: Does the title use one of the mapper families supported by the cartridge?
  • Save type: Is the game’s RAM size and save method within the cartridge’s limits?
  • RTC: Does the software require a clock, and does the cartridge provide it?
  • Firmware: Is the title supported by the installed kernel and firmware revision?

“Works with Game Boy” is therefore a platform statement, not a guarantee for every unusual homebrew build or every obscure commercial release. Keep claims title-specific when a game uses special hardware.

Firmware and kernel updates

Firmware is the low-level cartridge software; the kernel is the menu and loading software used by the Junior. EZ-FLASH explicitly supports upgrading both. Updates can add compatibility fixes, improve save handling, or resolve menu problems, but an update is also a point where a power interruption can leave the cartridge unusable.

  1. Read the current release notes and confirm that the update is intended for your exact cartridge model.
  2. Back up the SD card and existing save files.
  3. Use a reliable power source and do not press reset or remove the cartridge during the update.
  4. After the update, boot a known-good title and test both loading and saving.

For the EverDrive GB X7, follow the current authorized update procedure for the exact revision. Do not install files intended for another EverDrive model.

Price, stock, and warranty

Flash-cartridge pricing and stock are volatile. An EZ-FLASH USA listing captured during the cited crawl showed $44.99 and was marked sold out; that figure is a historical snapshot, not a current price or availability promise. The same caution applies to the EverDrive GB X7. Check the seller’s region, warranty terms, return policy, and whether an SD card is included.

A bundle that includes a card can be convenient, but confirm that the card is FAT32 and within the Junior’s 4–32 GB requirement. If no card is included, budget for a compatible FAT32 card rather than assuming any spare microSD card will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting guide

The cartridge does not appear in the menu

  • Power off, remove and reseat the SD card, and check that it is fully inserted.
  • Confirm the card is FAT32 and between 4 GB and 32 GB for the EZ-FLASH Junior.
  • Recheck the kernel and firmware files for the exact model.
  • Test another known-good card before concluding that the cartridge or console is defective.

A game starts but freezes or shows corrupted graphics

  • Verify the file is a clean, correctly built image.
  • Check the title’s mapper against the cartridge’s supported list.
  • Update the kernel or firmware if the manufacturer lists a compatibility fix.
  • Test the same file on a second Game Boy to separate console-contact problems from cartridge compatibility.

The save disappears

  • Allow the game to finish saving before resetting or powering off.
  • Use the documented reset-to-menu path rather than pulling the cartridge while powered.
  • Test a new save, power-cycle, and reload it immediately.
  • Back up working saves and check the battery condition and replacement instructions.

The clock is wrong

  • Confirm that the game actually requires RTC.
  • Check the cartridge’s RTC setting and the battery.
  • Install current firmware or kernel updates.
  • Repeat the test after a normal shutdown; abrupt power loss can interrupt save or clock handling.

The cartridge fits poorly or drains the battery quickly

Stop using it in a tight or modified shell until you verify the current physical-fit and power specifications. Inspect the console and cartridge contacts, and compare the measured behavior with the manufacturer’s current documentation rather than relying on an old forum post.

Which cartridge should you buy?

Choose the EverDrive GB X7 when

  • Save states are your deciding feature.
  • You prefer a premium cartridge and are willing to verify current revision details before purchase.
  • Your priority is convenience during play rather than the Junior’s published SD-card and replaceable-battery specification.

Choose the EZ-FLASH Junior when

  • You want SD-card loading with a FAT32 4–32 GB card.
  • You need RTC support for clock-dependent Game Boy or Game Boy Color software.
  • You value upgradable firmware and kernel software.
  • A replaceable battery is important for long-term maintenance.
  • You want the documented support list covering Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance/SP.

Wait and verify when

  • Your must-play title uses an unusual mapper or save type.
  • You need guaranteed compatibility with a specific console modification.
  • The listing does not clearly state the current warranty, region, stock, or included accessories.

Maintenance checklist

  • Keep a backup of the SD card contents and important save files.
  • Use only the current firmware and kernel for the exact cartridge model.
  • Keep the SD card in FAT32 format when using the EZ-FLASH Junior.
  • Never interrupt a save, reset, or firmware update.
  • Replace the Junior’s battery according to the manufacturer’s instructions and test saves afterward.
  • Clean console and cartridge contacts with appropriate electronics-cleaning methods before blaming software.
  • Recheck mapper, save type, RTC, and firmware requirements for every unusual title.

The Bottom Line

The EverDrive GB X7 is the premium pick when save states matter most. The EZ-FLASH Junior is the more practical SD-based choice, with documented RTC support, firmware and kernel updates, a replaceable battery, and compatibility across several Game Boy systems. Whichever you choose, verify the exact game’s mapper and save requirements, use only legally obtained software, and check current price, stock, warranty, fit, and power details before ordering.
