For a large FiveM roleplay server, start with a high-frequency or general-purpose VPS that has strong sustained CPU performance, NVMe storage, DDoS mitigation, and enough RAM headroom for your framework, database, and monitoring. OVHcloud’s US VPS range is the clearest published-value option, while Vultr high-frequency compute and Hetzner Cloud are strong alternatives when their available regions and current configurations fit your player base. No VPS can promise a fixed player count: scripts, assets, OneSync settings, database activity, and actual load-test results determine the ceiling.

Which VPS is best for a large FiveM server?

Choose the provider that gives your server the best combination of single-thread CPU performance, spare RAM, low-latency routing to players, NVMe storage, DDoS protection, backups, and a practical upgrade path. For most large roleplay projects, compare these three options first:

OVHcloud US VPS Predictable US pricing and a broad size range 2–8 vCores, 4–24 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe on the listed VPS-1 through VPS-4 tiers; unlimited traffic, automatic anti-DDoS, daily backups, one-click scaling and a 99.9% SLA Figures are the US page listings checked October 15, 2026. Renewal pricing and tax treatment are not stated on the supplied page.
Vultr high-frequency compute Workloads that benefit from high clock speed and a nearby region The official pricing page lists current high-frequency and regular compute configurations, vCPU, RAM, storage, transfer, regions and hourly/monthly charges Prices and inventory change; select the exact region and plan on the live page before ordering.
Hetzner Cloud Cost-sensitive deployments with suitable European or US placement The official cloud page lists current configurations, locations, traffic allowances and IPv4 charges Confirm US availability and inventory at purchase time; the supplied evidence does not establish a universal player capacity or a fixed current price.

These are starting points, not player-count guarantees. A lightly scripted 150-player server can need fewer resources than a heavily customized 80-player server with frequent database writes, voice processing, map streaming and aggressive logging.

What makes FiveM hosting demanding?

FiveM runs the FXServer process together with a framework, resource scripts, a database, caches, administrative tools and the operating system. A roleplay server usually has many small, recurring tasks rather than one large batch job. The result is sensitivity to CPU latency and scheduling consistency: a VPS with more advertised vCPUs can still perform worse if its underlying cores are slower or frequently contended.

CPU performance matters more than the vCPU headline

Watch sustained per-tick CPU time and frame time while players perform the busiest activities on your server. Character creation, inventories, dispatch systems, vehicle persistence, jobs, housing, phone systems and custom UI resources can all execute on the main game loop. Extra vCPUs help when the framework and supporting services can use them, but they do not compensate for a weak primary core. Prefer a high-frequency tier or a consistently performing general-purpose tier, then leave headroom instead of running at the limit.

RAM must include every service

Budget memory for FXServer, the database engine, database buffers, resource caches, monitoring agents, log rotation and the operating system. Swap is an emergency safety net, not usable game-server capacity: once the game process is paging, tick time and player experience usually deteriorate. Keep enough free RAM that a restart, database maintenance task or temporary resource spike does not trigger swapping.

NVMe reduces I/O stalls

NVMe storage helps with resource loading, database files, logs and backups. It cannot fix CPU contention or poor database queries. Allocate space for the base server, artifacts, resource packs, database growth, retained logs and temporary backup files; a small disk that is technically fast can still fail when it fills.

How much RAM and CPU do 100- or 200-player servers need?

There is no official FiveM specification that maps player count to a guaranteed VPS size. Treat any sizing number as a test starting point, not a promise. Build a staging copy with the same framework, resource pack, database schema and OneSync configuration used in production.

Practical starting envelopes

  • Around 100 concurrent players: begin testing with at least 8 GB RAM and 4 modern vCPUs, then increase memory if the database, cache or resource pack grows. A simple framework may fit comfortably; a script-heavy economy or voice stack may not.
  • Around 200 concurrent players: begin with 16–32 GB RAM and 6–8 strong vCPUs, keeping substantial CPU and memory headroom. This is a load-test target, not a capacity guarantee.
  • Beyond 200 players or multiple shards: evaluate a dedicated server or separate service tiers when one VPS cannot maintain stable frame time under peak load. You may also split the database, web panel and monitoring onto separate instances.

Measure the real workload before committing. A server that passes a quiet connection test can fail when every player enters a city area, opens inventories, triggers streamed assets and writes state simultaneously.

Provider comparison and current published prices

The following OVHcloud figures are the US listings checked October 15, 2026. They are displayed monthly prices; the page does not establish renewal pricing or tax treatment, so confirm both at checkout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
OVHcloud US tier vCores RAM NVMe Listed monthly price Traffic and protection
VPS-1 2 4 GB 40 GB $4.54/month Unlimited traffic and automatic anti-DDoS listed on the US page
VPS-2 4 8 GB Not stated for this tier $8.50/month Unlimited traffic and automatic anti-DDoS listed on the US page
VPS-3 6 12 GB Not stated for this tier $12.32/month Unlimited traffic and automatic anti-DDoS listed on the US page
VPS-4 8 24 GB Not stated for this tier $23.37/month Unlimited traffic and automatic anti-DDoS listed on the US page

OVHcloud also lists daily backups, one-click scaling and a 99.9% SLA. Premium backup starts at $1.40 per month and snapshots at $0.40 per month on the cited US page. Those add-ons, taxes and any later renewal change the total cost.

For Vultr, use the official pricing page to compare high-frequency and regular compute by exact region, vCPU, RAM, NVMe or local storage, transfer allowance and hourly versus monthly billing. The supplied figures do not establish a fixed price that will remain valid, so record the amount and availability on the day you deploy.

For Hetzner, check the official cloud page for current plans, locations, included traffic and IPv4 charges. Confirm that a US location is available if most players are in North America; a cheaper European instance can produce worse latency for that audience.

How to select a region and test network quality

Place the game server close to the largest concentration of players, not merely close to your own home or development office. Measure latency and route quality from the major internet-service providers your community uses. Look for stable latency and low packet loss during evening peaks, because a short average ping does not reveal intermittent congestion or poor routing.

Use a repeatable network check

  1. Create a temporary instance in each candidate region.
  2. Ask testers on the major local ISPs to connect at the same time of day and record latency, jitter and packet loss.
  3. Repeat during a simulated busy period, not only immediately after deployment.
  4. Keep the region that gives the most consistent route while meeting your CPU, RAM and backup requirements.

Players spread across continents may require a compromise region, a second shard or a different architecture. Do not choose a distant region solely because its monthly price is lower.

FiveM installation and administration workflow

Follow the official FiveM “Setting Up a Server” documentation for the current artifact, server-creation and txAdmin process. Provider control panels differ, but the deployment sequence is broadly the same:

  1. Provision the VPS: select a supported Linux or Windows image, attach an administrative account and choose the region that passed your latency tests.
  2. Apply access controls: use key-based administration where supported, restrict management ports to trusted addresses and enable the provider’s network protection features.
  3. Install the server artifacts: obtain the current artifacts through the official FiveM instructions rather than an unverified mirror.
  4. Create the server data directory: keep configuration, resources, logs and database connection details organized so backups can capture them consistently.
  5. Run txAdmin: complete the panel’s setup wizard, select the server profile and create an administrator account with a unique password.
  6. Configure OneSync and resources: enable the OneSync mode appropriate to your license and workload, then add resources in small batches so a faulty script is easy to identify.
  7. Connect the database: use a dedicated database account with only the permissions the framework needs; keep credentials out of publicly shared configuration files.
  8. Stage before opening the server: invite testers, exercise the heaviest gameplay loops and monitor CPU, memory, storage latency and database response.

Keep the production configuration under version control or another change-tracking process. Record artifact versions, resource versions and database migrations so you can roll back a problematic update.

Load testing and monitoring that reveal the real limit

Capacity decisions should come from measurements collected during representative activity. At minimum, monitor:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Per-tick CPU time and frame time: sustained spikes indicate script or scheduling pressure even when average CPU use looks moderate.
  • Per-process CPU and run-queue pressure: shows whether the main game process is competing with the database or other services.
  • RAM, cache and swap: rising swap use means the instance needs more memory or fewer resident services.
  • Disk latency and queue depth: identifies storage stalls caused by database writes, logs or resource loading.
  • Database latency and slow queries: reveals whether persistence work is delaying gameplay.
  • Network throughput, packet loss and saturation: confirms that traffic policy and the virtual NIC are not bottlenecks.

Test in stages: baseline with no players, then add concurrent connections, then trigger the busiest scenarios. Hold each stage long enough to expose leaks and cache growth. Keep a margin below the point where frame time becomes unstable; operating permanently at 95–100% CPU leaves no room for updates, backups or unexpected events.

Backups, snapshots and disaster recovery

A provider snapshot is not a complete backup strategy. Keep database dumps and resource archives outside the primary VPS account so an account lock, provider incident or accidental deletion does not remove both production and recovery copies.

Use layered copies

  • Frequent database exports: retain several recent generations and test that they can be imported into a clean database.
  • Resource and configuration archives: include server configuration, txAdmin data, resource manifests and any scripts that are not reproducible from source control.
  • Provider snapshots: use them for rapid rollback before a migration or major update, understanding that they remain tied to the provider account.
  • Off-site object storage: a service such as Backblaze B2 can hold encrypted archives separately. Calculate retained gigabytes, transaction counts and download volume from its current pricing page.

Perform a restore drill on a temporary VPS at regular intervals. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan. Document the exact order: provision, secure, restore database, restore resources, validate configuration, test player login and then switch DNS or the connection endpoint.

DDoS protection, security and operational safeguards

Automatic anti-DDoS protection is listed for OVHcloud’s US VPS range; verify the mitigation scope and acceptable-use limits for any provider you consider. Protection does not replace application security.

  • Run the game process with the least privilege practical for your operating system.
  • Close unused ports and restrict SSH or remote-desktop access by key, firewall rule or VPN.
  • Keep artifacts, operating-system packages, frameworks and resources patched, staging updates before production.
  • Separate public web panels from the database whenever the architecture allows.
  • Rate-limit administrative endpoints and use unique credentials for txAdmin, the database and the provider account.
  • Retain logs long enough to investigate abuse, but rotate them so a busy server cannot fill its disk.

When a VPS is better than a dedicated server

A VPS is usually the faster way to launch, resize and recover a server. It also gives you provider snapshots, hourly or monthly billing options on some platforms, and the ability to test several regions without buying hardware. The trade-off is shared physical infrastructure: neighboring workloads, virtual CPU scheduling and provider-level limits can affect consistency.

Choose a dedicated server when load tests show sustained CPU contention despite moving to a larger VPS, when you need predictable all-core performance for multiple busy shards, or when your database and game process compete for the same cores and storage. A dedicated machine also increases the administrative burden: hardware replacement, RAID or disk strategy, remote recovery and longer upgrade lead times become your responsibility or your host’s service terms.

Do not migrate based on a published player number alone. Capture your current CPU frame time, memory use, database latency and network profile, then compare those measurements with a dedicated server trial. A well-sized VPS with consistent performance can outperform an underpowered dedicated machine.

Common failure modes and fixes

Frame time rises while average CPU looks low

Inspect the main game thread, per-resource timing and CPU steal or run-queue metrics. A single busy thread, noisy neighbor or slow vCPU can be hidden by an average across all cores. Move to a higher-frequency tier, reduce expensive resources or test another provider region.

The server starts swapping after several hours

Check for resource or database memory growth, oversized caches and unbounded logs. Add RAM only after identifying the process consuming it; otherwise the leak remains and returns at a larger scale.

Players report rubber-banding but the VPS is not full

Check packet loss, jitter, route changes and network saturation from affected ISPs. Compare several regions and inspect whether a DDoS event or traffic policy is affecting packets. CPU and network symptoms can occur together, so correlate timestamps with server metrics.

Restores fail when you need them

Verify that backups include the database, resource files, configuration and secrets required to start. Run a scheduled restore drill and record every manual step. If an off-site archive is incomplete, change the backup job before the next incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A decision checklist before paying for a long term

  • Have you load-tested the exact framework, resource pack, database and OneSync configuration?
  • Does the chosen plan leave CPU and RAM headroom at the busiest measured stage?
  • Is the region consistently reachable from your largest player communities?
  • Are NVMe capacity, traffic limits, IPv4 charges and backup costs included in your total-cost calculation?
  • Do you know the provider’s upgrade path and whether scaling requires a reboot?
  • Have you confirmed support hours, recovery options and the SLA terms that actually apply to your plan?
  • Are database and resource backups stored outside the primary account, with a tested restore procedure?
  • Have you recorded the regular price, billing term, tax treatment and any promotional expiry date?

If the answers are yes, choose the smallest instance that passes the test with clear headroom, then scale from measurements rather than marketing player counts.
