If you want a Final Fantasy game outside the usual starting points, begin with Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles for deep tactical battles and character building, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered for an unconventional numbered adventure with modern convenience options, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age for political fantasy, Final Fantasy IX for traditional fantasy and an ensemble cast, or Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! for a lighter, turn-based dungeon-crawling spin-off. “Underrated” here is a matter of taste, not an official Square Enix ranking. These games are alternative entry points into a catalogue that includes numbered games I through XVI as well as many spin-offs.

What “underrated” means in this guide

Final Fantasy has no official list of least-loved or underrated games. A title may be less frequently recommended than the most famous entries while still having a substantial audience, strong sales, or a very specific design identity. The five games below are selected because they serve preferences that mainstream recommendations can overlook: tactical combat, unusual systems with optional modern aids, political storytelling, overtly traditional fantasy, and a compact spin-off dungeon loop.

The recommendations are not a quality ranking. They answer a more useful question: Which Final Fantasy should I play next if I want something different from the series’ most commonly suggested games?

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles: the best choice for tactical combat

Why it fits an underrated-games search

Choose Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles if what you really want is a Final Fantasy game where positioning, terrain and team composition matter as much as selecting a command. Square Enix describes terrain-aware tactical battles and a job system with more than 20 jobs and over 300 abilities. That combination makes it the clearest recommendation for someone asking, “Which Final Fantasy game has the best job system?”

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is not simply a numbered role-playing game with a few optional character builds. Battles take place on maps where elevation and movement affect the situation, so a turn can involve moving to a defensible position, protecting a fragile unit, setting up an ability, or denying an enemy a useful route. The job system then lets you shape characters around the role your party needs rather than treating every member as a fixed template.

What The Ivalice Chronicles adds

The release includes an enhanced version with visual, interface, dialogue, voice and quality-of-life changes, alongside a classic version. That two-version structure matters if you are deciding whether to experience the original presentation or use the more approachable edition. The enhanced version is the practical starting point for a first playthrough; the classic version is there for readers who specifically want the earlier form.

Because the improvements cover both presentation and usability, this is the recommendation for readers who are interested in an older tactical design but do not want every historical friction point. The game still asks you to think carefully about turns and party construction; quality-of-life changes do not turn it into an action game.

Platforms and price qualification

Square Enix announced availability on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Steam Deck. The announcement listed a $49.99 price. That figure belongs to the announcement and should not be treated as a guaranteed current price, regional price, sale price or physical-retail price.

If you are choosing a format, compare the storefront listing for your country with the edition name shown at purchase. The announcement confirms platform availability but does not establish a particular physical edition or a current retailer listing.

Who should start elsewhere

Tactics is a poor first choice if you want a conventional, continuously moving party RPG or a quick dungeon run. Its appeal is deliberate decision-making, experimentation with jobs and learning how a map changes the value of an action. If that sounds like work rather than discovery, Final Fantasy IX or Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is a better first step from this list.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered: the unconventional numbered entry with adjustable friction

Why choose VIII Remastered

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is for the reader who has already noticed that Final Fantasy does not use one fixed formula. It is a numbered entry, but it is often approached differently from the series’ more immediately familiar adventures. The remaster gives you a way to investigate that design without accepting every slowdown or random encounter at the original pace.

Square Enix describes newly rendered visuals and three optional features: Battle Assist, No Encounters and 3x Speed Boost. Each solves a different problem. Battle Assist can reduce the pressure of routine fights, No Encounters lets you move through areas without triggering battles, and 3x Speed Boost accelerates sections where the original tempo feels too slow. You can decide when to use them rather than committing to an all-or-nothing difficulty setting.

How to use the convenience options responsibly

  1. Begin without changing everything. Play the opening portion at the normal speed so you can understand the rhythm of exploration and battles.
  2. Use 3x Speed Boost for repetition. Turn it on when travel or a familiar sequence is taking longer than you want, then return to normal speed for story scenes or fights you want to read closely.
  3. Enable No Encounters when exploration is the priority. This is useful when you are revisiting an area, looking for a route or focusing on the story rather than combat.
  4. Treat Battle Assist as a relief valve. Use it for routine encounters or when you want to see the result of an unusual party setup without grinding through every fight.

These options are not evidence that the underlying game is bad or that every player should use them. They let a new player control the amount of older-design friction while preserving access to the numbered adventure itself.

Platforms and bundle context

Square Enix’s 2019 announcement listed Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Steam and Xbox One. That is dated platform information, so check the live storefront in your region before assuming a listing is still available or that it is the same edition.

Square Enix also announced a North American physical Nintendo Switch Final Fantasy VII (Original) + Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Twin Pack, with a stated release date of December 9, 2025 and an announcement price of $39.99. This is a bundle rather than an VIII-only cartridge. Since the announced date has passed, verify current stock, seller, region and edition details before treating it as a purchase option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who will enjoy it most

Pick VIII Remastered if you want to explore a divisive or less conventional numbered entry while retaining control over pace. It is less suitable if your priority is a purely traditional fantasy world or a grid-based tactical system; IX and Tactics serve those preferences more directly.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age: the political-fantasy recommendation

The story angle

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is the strongest choice here for readers who want a fantasy story shaped by occupation, resistance and competing political interests. Square Enix’s description centers on Princess Ashe and Vaan. Their perspectives place personal loss and ordinary life alongside the larger struggle against an occupying power.

This focus changes what “fantasy” means in the game. The setting is not only a backdrop for a party’s journey; power, sovereignty and the consequences of war are part of the central conflict. Choose XII when you want the world’s political situation to be a primary reason to keep playing.

Why it belongs in an underrated-entry guide

XII is sometimes overlooked by players who expect every Final Fantasy to follow a straightforward hero-versus-villain structure. Its appeal is broader: a resistance narrative, a large world and a party assembled around different relationships to the conflict. That makes it a useful alternative entry point even if you normally prefer story-first RPGs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Square Enix reported in an April 30, 2019 article that Final Fantasy XII had sold more than 6 million units worldwide. That publisher-reported figure is sales context, not proof that the game is underrated and not a measurement of critical opinion. It simply shows why popularity and “underrated” can coexist as separate ideas.

Current access caveat

A 2019 Square Enix page listed PlayStation 4, Steam, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. Because those details are dated, check your regional storefront for the current product name, platform support and edition. Do not assume that an old platform list guarantees a current digital listing, backward compatibility or identical features in every territory.

Who should pick XII over the other recommendations

  • Choose XII over Tactics if you want a conventional numbered RPG framework rather than battles on a tactical grid.
  • Choose XII over IX if political conflict matters more to you than an overtly traditional fantasy atmosphere.
  • Choose XII over VIII Remastered if you want the setting’s resistance story to be the main attraction rather than optional tools for adjusting pace.

Final Fantasy IX: the traditional-fantasy and character-journey pick

What makes IX different in this group

Final Fantasy IX is the recommendation for readers who want Final Fantasy to look and feel unmistakably fantastical. Square Enix describes a story of love, war and betrayal involving Zidane, Garnet and their companions. That combination makes the game’s identity character-focused as well as setting-focused: the journey is driven by relationships and by the consequences of a wider conflict.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

If you have played more technologically oriented or system-heavy entries and want a reminder that Final Fantasy can be theatrical, romantic and openly rooted in fantasy imagery, IX is the natural choice. It is also the most straightforward answer for someone asking for a character-led adventure rather than a tactical campaign or a spin-off loop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to decide if its tone suits you

Pick IX when you want the party to be the emotional center of the experience. Zidane, Garnet and their companions are not interchangeable examples in a combat system; the official description places their relationships and the surrounding war and betrayal at the heart of the journey. If you prefer stories organized around political resistance, XII is more targeted. If you prefer experimentation with jobs and abilities, Tactics offers more system depth.

Availability is edition- and region-dependent

Square Enix’s 2019 listing included PlayStation 4, Steam, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Windows 10. Treat that as historical platform information, not a promise that every version remains sold or supported everywhere. Check the store for your country and the exact edition before buying.

Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY!: the spin-off for a different loop

Why it is worth considering

Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! is the outlier. It is not another numbered Final Fantasy adventure; it is a spin-off built around randomly generated dungeons, a buddy system and local co-op, according to Square Enix. That makes it a strong recommendation when the phrase “Final Fantasy game” means the setting and characters but not necessarily a long, linear RPG campaign.

Randomly generated dungeons change the value of each run. Instead of memorizing one fixed route, you respond to the layout and circumstances presented during that attempt. The buddy system adds another layer to the run, while local co-op gives two players a reason to approach it as a shared activity rather than a solitary campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose the spin-off

  • Choose it if you want shorter, repeatable dungeon sessions.
  • Choose it if local co-op matters more than a large political narrative.
  • Choose it if you enjoy learning a subgenre instead of looking for another numbered entry.

Choose something else if your priority is a long character arc involving a central party, a resistance story or a large job system. Those needs are covered more directly by IX, XII and Tactics.

How to choose among these five games

Start with combat

If you want… Start with… Reason
Terrain, positioning and turn-by-turn planning Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles Its defining features are terrain-aware tactical battles and a large job-and-ability system.
A numbered RPG with optional tools to reduce repetition Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Battle Assist, No Encounters and 3x Speed Boost let you adjust the amount of friction.
A conventional party adventure with traditional fantasy emphasis Final Fantasy IX Its official description foregrounds Zidane, Garnet and a story of love, war and betrayal.
A resistance story shaped by occupation and power Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Princess Ashe and Vaan are at the center of the political-fantasy premise.
Random runs and local cooperative play Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! Its core structure is randomly generated dungeons plus a buddy system and local co-op.

Then choose by story tone

  1. Traditional fantasy and personal relationships: choose IX.
  2. Political fantasy and resistance: choose XII.
  3. System-driven tactical conflict: choose Tactics.
  4. A less conventional numbered adventure: choose VIII Remastered.
  5. A lighter spin-off structure: choose Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon.

Finally check convenience and platform access

Convenience features are most explicit in VIII Remastered and in the enhanced edition of The Ivalice Chronicles. If you want speed controls, encounter suppression or battle assistance, VIII is the clearest fit. If you want modernized visuals, interface, dialogue, voice and quality-of-life changes while retaining a classic edition as an alternative, Tactics offers the more substantial version choice.

For IX and XII, the available platform information comes from 2019 pages, so storefront verification is especially important. For the Chocobo spin-off, the listed platforms are PS4 and Switch. Platform availability, language support, physical stock and regional pricing can differ even when a publisher’s original announcement names the same systems.

Practical play orders for different readers

If this is your first less-familiar Final Fantasy

Start with IX if you want the most immediately recognizable fantasy premise, then try XII if its political emphasis appeals to you. Move to Tactics when you are ready for a more demanding battle structure. This order prioritizes a traditional party journey before asking you to learn a grid-based system.

If you already know the numbered games

Start with Tactics to experience the franchise through jobs, abilities and terrain rather than another standard numbered format. Follow it with Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon if you want an even sharper change of genre, or with XII if you want a larger political narrative.

If older pacing is your main concern

Begin with VIII Remastered and use its optional features selectively. The ability to accelerate travel, suppress encounters or reduce routine-battle pressure lets you test whether the game’s unusual identity interests you without making a permanent commitment to its original pace.

If you want to play locally with another person

Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! is the only recommendation here whose official description specifically includes local co-op. Confirm the current platform listing and controller requirements for your chosen edition.

Buying and availability checklist

  • Check the live storefront for your country rather than relying on an old announcement.
  • Confirm the exact edition name, especially for The Ivalice Chronicles, which includes enhanced and classic versions.
  • Separate an announcement price from a current price. The $49.99 Tactics figure and $39.99 North American Twin Pack figure were announced prices, not guarantees of what you will pay now.
  • For the VII + VIII Twin Pack, remember that it is a bundle and not an VIII-only physical cartridge.
  • Verify whether a listing is digital or physical, whether stock is current and whether the region matches your console account.
  • Do not treat a 2019 platform list for IX or XII as proof of present-day availability.

Bottom line

For most readers seeking an overlooked side of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is the best first recommendation because its tactical maps and unusually broad job system offer the clearest alternative to a standard numbered RPG. Choose Final Fantasy VIII Remastered when you want an unconventional numbered entry with optional tools for pace and difficulty friction; Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age for political fantasy; Final Fantasy IX for an overtly traditional, character-focused journey; and Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! when a randomly generated, locally cooperative spin-off is exactly the change of pace you want.
