You no longer need to wait for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls: it launched in August 2026. The best companion games depend on what attracted you to it. Choose Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics for Marvel crossover history, Dragon Ball FighterZ for another anime-styled team fighter from Arc System Works, or Guilty Gear -Strive- for Arc System Works’ broader anime fighting-game style in a different match format.
This guide explains exactly how those games differ from Tōkon, what the released game actually offers, and which choice fits your preferred characters, team mechanics, offline modes, and online plans.
MARVEL Tōkon is already released
The “while you wait” wording is now historical. The official support FAQ says MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls released on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 6, 2026; in Japan, the local calendar date was August 7. The PC edition is available through Steam and Epic. If you are searching for a game to play before buying Tōkon, treat it as a current release rather than an upcoming one.

Tōkon is a 4v4 tag-team fighting game made by PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works, and Marvel Games. The PlayStation Store listing specifies 20 launch characters. Its feature list includes adjustable controls, quick inputs, easy chain combos, local versus, online lobbies, and an Episode Mode.

How its team system is intended to work
Assist calls can create an opening to bring a teammate into the action briefly. Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine described the goal in a PlayStation interview published August 11, 2025: “We wanted to challenge ourselves to create a new tag fighter.” He also said, “You only need to learn to play as one character in order to enjoy the game, and you can still see your other teammates coming in and out of the battlefield.” That makes Tōkon a useful starting point for players who like team strategy but do not want to master four complete move sets immediately.
Its visual identity
Marvel Games Senior Product Development Manager Michael Francisco described the art direction as a fusion of Marvel and American comics with Japanese anime and manga. That combination is why Tōkon belongs in the same conversation as both Marvel crossover fighters and Arc System Works’ anime fighting games, even though its 4v4 structure is its own design.
Choose the alternative that matches your reason for playing
There is no evidence-based universal “best” ranking here. No independent study establishes that one of these games is objectively superior or more popular. The useful question is which experience you want alongside Tōkon.

| Game | Best fit | Team or match identity | How it differs from Tōkon |
|---|---|---|---|
| MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls | Marvel characters in a new 4v4 tag fighter | 4v4 teams, assist calls, brief teammate switches | The reference point: 20 launch characters, quick inputs, easy chain combos, story and local modes |
| Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics | Marvel crossover history and classic team-fighter gameplay | A collection of earlier Marvel crossover arcade titles | It preserves the legacy rather than reproducing Tōkon’s specific 4v4 system |
| Dragon Ball FighterZ | Anime spectacle and team-based play from Arc System Works | Its own team-fighting rules and character mechanics | Anime presentation and team play overlap, but it is not a Marvel game or a mechanical copy of Tōkon |
| Guilty Gear -Strive- | Arc System Works’ anime presentation and a deeper alternative format | A different match structure from a 4v4 tag fighter | It shares visual sensibilities and developer lineage, not Tōkon’s team size or Marvel roster |
Best for Marvel crossover history: Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection
If your main reason for noticing Tōkon is the combination of Marvel characters and fast team battles, Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is the most direct historical companion. It gathers earlier Marvel crossover fighting games, letting you see the lineage that made Marvel team fighters a distinct subgenre.
Why it belongs on your shortlist
- You want to play Marvel characters rather than move to an unrelated fictional universe.
- You are interested in how earlier crossover games handled assists, teams, and rapid character changes.
- You prefer a collection of established arcade games to a newly designed system.
- You want a way to understand the “fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom” side of the search without assuming every Marvel fighter works the same way.
What it does not replicate
The collection is not a mechanical substitute for Tōkon’s 4v4 format. It represents the history of Marvel crossover fighters, while Tōkon introduces a new team structure, its own assist behavior, and a different control philosophy. A player who wants exactly four fighters on a team and the ability to focus on one character should use Tōkon itself as the reference point, not expect the collection to duplicate it.

Check the edition before buying
Platform and retail availability can vary by region, edition, and storefront. Confirm the current listing for your system before purchasing, especially if you need a physical copy, a particular language, or local multiplayer on a specific platform. Do not assume that every edition offers identical features or that a retailer carries every version.
Best anime team-fighter alternative: Dragon Ball FighterZ
Dragon Ball FighterZ is the strongest alternative when you want team-based anime action and the recognizable visual energy associated with Arc System Works. It is also useful for players who want to compare how a different license uses a team roster, assists, and dramatic character presentation.
Why it fits
- It is another Arc System Works fighting game, so the broad anime-oriented presentation is a meaningful connection.
- It centers team play rather than limiting the experience to a single permanent fighter.
- Its Dragon Ball cast supplies a different form of spectacle while preserving the appeal of assembling a preferred group.
- It gives you a second team fighter for learning how assist timing, character roles, and roster composition affect your decisions.
Where the comparison stops
Dragon Ball FighterZ has its own mechanics, timing, and character-specific rules. Similar publisher or studio lineage does not make the games interchangeable. A technique, combo route, or team role that works in one should not be assumed to work in the other. Choose it for the team-fighter and anime qualities, not because it is a Marvel game with different characters.
Who should start here
Pick Dragon Ball FighterZ if the part of Tōkon that appeals to you most is the idea of building a squad and watching several characters participate in a match. It is less suitable if the Marvel setting itself is the deciding factor or if you specifically want Tōkon’s adjustable controls and quick-input approach.
Best for Arc System Works’ broader anime style: Guilty Gear -Strive-
Guilty Gear -Strive- is the right recommendation when the art direction and Arc System Works identity matter more to you than matching Tōkon’s team size. A post-launch Tom’s Guide review described Tōkon as visually reminiscent of Marvel vs. Capcom and mechanically closer to Arc System Works games including Guilty Gear -Strive- and Dragon Ball FighterZ. That is a reviewer’s comparison, not an official claim that the games use the same system.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Why choose it
- You want highly stylized anime presentation from the same developer family.
- You are comfortable moving to a different match format instead of requiring a 4v4 tag structure.
- You want to study Arc System Works’ approach to character identity and fighting-game depth outside a Marvel license.
- You prefer learning a distinct fighting game rather than another version of the same crossover formula.
Why it is not a direct substitute
Guilty Gear -Strive- does not reproduce Tōkon’s four-character team, Marvel roster, or stated quick-input and easy-chain-combo goals. Its value is comparative: it shows what Arc System Works’ anime fighting design looks like when the game is built around a different structure and fictional universe.
Compare the mechanics before you choose
“Tag fighter” can describe several different experiences. Use the distinctions below rather than assuming that a shared label means shared execution.
| Question | Tōkon | Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection | Dragon Ball FighterZ | Guilty Gear -Strive- |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How many characters define the team? | Four-person teams are the stated format. | Varies by game in the collection; it is not presented as Tōkon’s specific 4v4 system. | Team-based, with its own rules and roster roles. | Uses a different match format from a 4v4 tag fighter. |
| What is the strongest connection? | Marvel, new design, and Arc System Works presentation. | Marvel crossover history. | Anime team fighting and Arc System Works lineage. | Arc System Works’ anime visual identity. |
| How approachable is the stated control model? | Adjustable controls, quick inputs, and easy chain combos are listed features. | Each included arcade title retains its own original control behavior. | Its input and combo rules are specific to the game. | Its input and combo rules are specific to the game. |
| Can you focus on one fighter? | Sekine specifically described a design where learning one character is enough to enjoy the game while teammates enter and leave. | Depends on the individual game and its team system. | Team management remains part of the game’s identity. | It is a different format, so the Tōkon comparison does not directly apply. |
The table is a selection tool, not a claim that one system is easier or better. If you are new to fighting games, start with the control and training options you are willing to use, then learn the game’s own terminology and timing.
What Tōkon offers offline and online
The official FAQ separates offline content from online requirements. Offline modes include Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, and Character Guides.
Playing offline on PS5
Those offline modes do not require PlayStation Plus on PS5. You can use the story, local competition, practice, and guide content without maintaining the online subscription.

Playing offline on PC
On PC, the same offline content can be played without a PlayStation account. You still need the game installed through a supported PC storefront, but the FAQ does not require that account for offline play.
Going online
Online modes require an internet connection and a platform account. PS5 online play requires PlayStation Plus. PC online play requires a PlayStation account. Those requirements apply to online features, not the offline modes listed above.
What this means for your choice
- Choose Tōkon confidently if you mainly want Episode Mode, training, local Versus, or the character guides and do not want an online subscription.
- Check the account and subscription requirement before planning a tournament night or online lobby session.
- For the other games in this guide, verify the current platform listing and edition details separately; their availability and feature sets are not established by Tōkon’s FAQ.
A practical decision path
- Start with the fiction. Choose Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection if Marvel crossover characters are non-negotiable. Choose Dragon Ball FighterZ if an anime team roster is enough. Choose Guilty Gear -Strive- if Arc System Works’ presentation is the priority. Choose Tōkon if you want all of Marvel, Arc’s anime influence, and a new 4v4 design together.
- Decide whether four-person teams matter. Tōkon is the only game in this group explicitly built around 4v4 teams. The collection preserves earlier formats, Dragon Ball FighterZ has its own team rules, and Guilty Gear -Strive- uses a different match structure.
- Choose how much of the roster you want to learn. Tōkon’s developer specifically designed it so that learning one character can be enough to enjoy a match. In every other game, treat the control scheme and character responsibilities as separate systems until you have confirmed their current tutorials and guides.
- Pick your first mode. Use Tōkon’s Training Mode and Character Guides to learn fundamentals, Episode Mode for solo content, or local Versus for same-room play. For another title, confirm whether the edition you are buying includes the solo, local, and online modes you expect.
- Verify the purchase details. Check platform, region, edition, physical or digital format, and current storefront availability immediately before buying. The collection’s listings can vary, and an edition that works on one platform may not provide the same local or online options on another.
Common mistakes when choosing a game like Tōkon
Expecting a historical collection to feel like a new 4v4 game
Marvel crossover history is the reason to select Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection, not a promise that every included game matches Tōkon’s team size or control goals. Approach it as a playable archive of the genre’s earlier ideas.
Assuming every Arc System Works game shares one control scheme
Tōkon, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Guilty Gear -Strive- are related by developer lineage and broad presentation, but each has its own mechanics. Carrying habits from one game directly into another can create unnecessary frustration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuying before checking the platform listing
Do not infer a physical edition, a specific storefront, cross-platform access, or local multiplayer support from a title’s reputation. Confirm the exact edition and region that you intend to use.

Confusing offline access with online access
Tōkon’s offline modes are available without PlayStation Plus on PS5 and without a PlayStation account on PC, but online play has separate account and subscription requirements. Decide which type of play you actually need before treating an online requirement as a barrier to the entire game.
Using “best” as if it were a measured ranking
There is no named independent statistic or study establishing a best game in this group. The recommendations are fit-based: Marvel crossover, anime team play, or Arc System Works’ broader style. Your preferred roster and match structure should determine the result.
Which game should you play first?
Start with MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls if you were waiting specifically for its four-person Marvel team concept. It is now the only option here that combines the announced 4v4 structure, 20-character launch roster, assist calls, adjustable controls, quick inputs, and easy chain combos in one released game.

Choose Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics when the historical Marvel crossover matters more than matching Tōkon’s mechanics. Choose Dragon Ball FighterZ when you want another anime team fighter from Arc System Works. Choose Guilty Gear -Strive- when you want Arc’s anime presentation and a deliberately different fighting-game format.
The most useful rotation is not a ranking: Tōkon for its new 4v4 Marvel system, the collection for crossover history, Dragon Ball FighterZ for team-based anime play, and Guilty Gear -Strive- for a broader look at Arc System Works’ fighting-game design.
