If Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun gave you the right mix of sprinting, heavy weapons, pixel gore and 1990s-inspired aggression, start with ULTRAKILL, Turbo Overkill or Prodeus. ULTRAKILL turns that aggression into a technical score-chasing system, Turbo Overkill adds extreme traversal and weapon spectacle, and Prodeus delivers the most direct classic-FPS follow-up.

The rest of this list covers distinct ways to pursue the same urge: magical weapons in AMID EVIL, cult-horror improvisation in CULTIC, Lovecraftian atmosphere in Forgive Me Father, and short anime-styled time attacks in MULLET MADJACK.

What makes a good Boltgun follow-up?

Boltgun is a 2023 first-person shooter from Auroch Digital and Focus Entertainment built around a Space Marine arsenal, frenetic combat and a deliberately retro pixel presentation. Its Steam listing uses both “Boomer Shooter” and “Fast-Paced” tags, so the best follow-ups should preserve momentum and decisive weapon feedback rather than merely looking old-fashioned.

That does not mean every recommendation must copy its Warhammer 40,000 setting. The games below are selected for the parts players usually want to carry forward: constant movement, aggressive arenas, readable enemy threats, explosive weapons, secrets and a campaign structure that rewards replaying encounters. Their differences matter. Some are conventional run-and-gun shooters; others ask you to master combos, movement abilities or a strict timer.

1. ULTRAKILL: the best movement-and-mastery upgrade

ULTRAKILL is the closest choice when you want Boltgun’s aggression pushed into a more technical, score-driven direction. Steam describes it as a fast-paced, ultraviolent old-school FPS that combines classic shooters, modern Doom and character-action games. That last influence is important: survival is only part of the game’s purpose. You are encouraged to attack with style, chain weapons together and turn every encounter into a performance.

Why it suits a Boltgun player

  • Movement is not a pause between shots. Staying mobile is central to both survival and scoring.
  • Blood-based healing rewards fighting at close range instead of retreating to wait for health.
  • Weapon variation and combo systems make familiar enemy groups worth replaying.
  • Ranks, secrets and optional challenges give the campaign a long tail after a first clear.

Choose this first if your ideal “retro shooter with modern movement” means learning advanced techniques and improving a level repeatedly. It is less of a straight military-style rampage than Boltgun; the satisfaction comes from discovering more efficient and stylish solutions.

Release and review context: Arsi “Hakita” Patala developed the game and New Blood Interactive published it. It released on September 3, 2020. The Steam English-review snapshot used here was 97% positive from 151,716 reviews, a large sample that reflects sustained interest but can change over time.

2. Turbo Overkill: the most mobile and spectacular option

Turbo Overkill takes the classic Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem 3D lineage into cyberpunk territory, then adds a much larger movement vocabulary. You have a chainsaw leg, more than 15 weapons, wall-running, dashing, grappling hooks and a slow-motion ability called Turbo Time. Flying-car traversal and arena challenges expand the action beyond a simple sequence of corridors.

What changes from Boltgun

The chainsaw leg is not just a novelty; it gives close-range attacks a distinct identity while the traversal tools let you approach arenas vertically and from unusual angles. The result is faster and more system-heavy than Boltgun. If you enjoyed charging into a crowd but wanted more ways to cross the space, reposition or reach a hidden route, this is the strongest match.

The campaign contains two dozen stages, with secrets and dedicated arena challenges for players who want to revisit completed areas. Pick it over ULTRAKILL if you prefer mobility powers and weapon gimmicks to a heavily rank-focused mastery loop.

Release and review context: Trigger Happy Interactive developed Turbo Overkill and Apogee Entertainment published it. The release date was August 11, 2023. Steam’s English-review snapshot was 94% positive from 4,562 reviews. That makes it a strong recommendation for players who want a substantial campaign built around traversal rather than a small arcade loop.

3. Prodeus: the cleanest classic-FPS continuation

Prodeus is the recommendation for someone asking, “What should I play after Boltgun?” but wanting the answer to remain a conventional shooter. It describes itself as an old first-person shooter re-imagined with modern rendering while preserving retro aesthetics and gameplay shaped by older hardware limits. Its Boomer Shooter and Fast-Paced tags make the intent explicit.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Why its structure works

Instead of centering advanced movement tricks or a score-combo system, Prodeus focuses on the fundamentals: move through hostile spaces, find weapons and secrets, and clear demanding groups of enemies with readable gunplay. That makes it the least disruptive transition from Boltgun in this list.

  • Choose it for a traditional campaign rhythm rather than repeated time attacks.
  • Use the online PvP and online co-op modes if you want the classic-FPS formula with other players.
  • The level editor adds user-created spaces after the main campaign.

It is a particularly good fit when the attraction of Boltgun is its straightforward Space Marine power fantasy, not necessarily its setting.

Release and review context: Bounding Box Software developed the game and Balor Games published it. It released on September 23, 2022. The Steam English-review snapshot was 92% positive from 4,124 reviews. Its multiplayer and level-editor support also give it a different kind of replay value from the score-focused games above.

4. AMID EVIL: magical weapons in a surreal dark-fantasy world

AMID EVIL changes the fantasy of the arsenal without slowing the combat. Instead of bolters and other firearms, you use sacred and magical weapons in a dark-fantasy setting. Steam identifies it as a retro FPS and tags it Boomer Shooter, Old School, Arena Shooter, Magic, Psychedelic and Dark Fantasy.

Who should choose it

This is for players who want the relentless encounters of Boltgun but would rather fight through strange fantasy spaces than science-fantasy battlefields. The weapons are the main point of contrast: the game’s identity comes from supernatural tools and their visual effects, not from reproducing a military arsenal.

Its arena-shooter influence makes enemy encounters feel deliberately staged, while the psychedelic presentation gives each area a more surreal character than Boltgun’s grim industrial and war-torn environments. Pick it when atmosphere and weapon fantasy matter as much as raw speed.

Release and review context: Indefatigable developed AMID EVIL and New Blood Interactive published it. It released on June 20, 2019. Steam’s English-review snapshot was 93% positive from 5,486 reviews. The game is therefore a particularly focused choice for readers who want a retro FPS but are ready to trade firearms for magic.

5. CULTIC: the best horror-and-improvisation choice

CULTIC begins with the player crawling from a grave and fighting through a twisted cult. Its combat description emphasizes shooting, sliding, blasting, ducking and dodging, with physics-heavy gib effects. Guns are joined by dynamite, so encounters invite improvised attacks rather than a single fixed weapon sequence.

How it differs from Boltgun

The presentation is more grounded and horror-focused, with a Lovecraftian edge rather than a huge science-fiction war. Movement is still quick and aggressive, but the game’s appeal comes from using the environment, explosives and evasive movement to survive dangerous groups. If you liked Boltgun’s close-range brutality and want a more tense, physical version of it, CULTIC is the strongest recommendation.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Its conventional campaign structure also makes it easier to approach than a score-attack game. You can play for the atmosphere and progression first, then replay fights to find better uses for dynamite and movement.

Release and review context: Jasozz Games developed CULTIC and 3D Realms published it. It released on October 13, 2022. Steam’s English-review snapshot was 97% positive from 6,400 reviews. The combination of a conventional campaign, horror tone and explosive improvisation makes it a useful middle ground between Boltgun and more experimental movement shooters.

6. Forgive Me Father: comic-book Lovecraftian horror

Forgive Me Father is a dark retro horror FPS set in a comic-book world inspired by H. P. Lovecraft. Steam tags it Boomer Shooter, Lovecraftian, Retro, Gore and Dark Fantasy. It is the pick for readers who want supernatural dread and visual atmosphere to stand beside speed and shooting.

Why it belongs on this list

The game keeps the old-school FPS foundation but frames it through horror imagery and supernatural powers. That gives the combat a different emotional register from Boltgun’s loud military confidence: you are still moving through hostile spaces and firing constantly, but the surrounding world is intended to feel disturbing and uncanny.

Its 84% positive English review snapshot is lower than the other recommendations listed here, so treat it as a targeted atmosphere choice rather than the safest all-purpose follow-up. Choose it when Lovecraftian comic-book horror is a deciding feature, not a bonus.

Release and review context: Byte Barrel developed the game and Fulqrum Publishing published it. It released on April 7, 2022. Steam’s English-review snapshot was 84% positive from 2,269 reviews. That review figure should not be read as a universal ranking; it simply reinforces that this is a more specific recommendation for horror fans.

7. MULLET MADJACK: the fastest short-form score attack

MULLET MADJACK is built around compressed runs rather than a long traditional campaign. It presents itself as a high-octane shooter set inside a classic anime, with the objective of reaching the last floor, beating your best time and trying again. Steam tags it Boomer Shooter, Fast-Paced, Arcade, Score Attack and Roguelite.

When it is the right choice

  • Pick it if you want the fastest boomer-shooter sessions in this group.
  • Expect time pressure and repeatable attempts instead of a leisurely campaign route.
  • Choose it for leaderboard-style improvement, where shaving seconds matters as much as surviving.

This is not a replacement for Boltgun’s broader campaign structure. It is a focused alternative for players who want every run to be a deliberate test of speed and execution, with the anime presentation providing a very different tone from Warhammer 40,000.

Release and review context: HAMMER95 developed the game, with Epopeia Games and HAMMER95 listed as publishers. It released on May 15, 2024. Steam’s English-review snapshot was 97% positive from 4,826 reviews. Its score-attack design means the meaningful question is not campaign length but whether you enjoy repeating a route to improve your time.

These dates help separate the games’ design eras without implying that newer always means better. AMID EVIL is the earliest release among the alternatives here, while MULLET MADJACK is the newest. The common thread is not launch year but the decision to build around fast, legible first-person combat.

Which game should you pick?

Choose by movement intensity

ULTRAKILL, Turbo Overkill and MULLET MADJACK are the most speed-forward choices. ULTRAKILL rewards technical movement and combat style, Turbo Overkill gives you the largest set of traversal tools, and MULLET MADJACK adds a strict timer to every run. Prodeus and CULTIC are more conventional retro-FPS experiences, while AMID EVIL and Forgive Me Father use their settings and weapons to define the difference.

Choose by combat identity

  • Style, combos and healing: ULTRAKILL.
  • Traversal powers and weapon gimmicks: Turbo Overkill.
  • Classic gunplay: Prodeus.
  • Magical weapons: AMID EVIL.
  • Dynamite, dodging and physics: CULTIC.
  • Supernatural horror powers: Forgive Me Father.
  • Timed arcade runs: MULLET MADJACK.

Choose by campaign shape

For a conventional campaign, start with Prodeus or CULTIC. For secrets and optional mastery, choose ULTRAKILL or Turbo Overkill. For repeatable, high-pressure attempts rather than a long campaign, choose MULLET MADJACK.

Choose by replay value

If replay means improving a grade or finding every optional objective, ULTRAKILL offers the clearest long-term mastery loop through ranks, secrets and challenges. Turbo Overkill uses secrets and arena stages to make completed areas worth revisiting. Prodeus extends its campaign with online PvP, online co-op and a level editor. MULLET MADJACK is replayable by design: the run itself is the unit of progress. CULTIC sits between those models, offering a conventional route that can be replayed with more confident use of explosives and evasive movement.

How the recommendations compare with Boltgun

Boltgun occupies the science-fantasy end of the spectrum: its Space Marine arsenal and Warhammer 40,000 setting provide the context for its retro speed. Turbo Overkill is the cyberpunk counterpart, AMID EVIL the dark-fantasy counterpart, CULTIC and Forgive Me Father the horror counterparts, and MULLET MADJACK the anime-arcade counterpart.

That comparison also explains why no single game replaces every part of Boltgun. If the setting and weapon fantasy are what you value most, none of these games reproduces the Space Marine premise. If what you want is the underlying pace and old-school FPS structure, Prodeus is the most direct translation. If you want the same aggression made deeper or faster, choose ULTRAKILL or Turbo Overkill.

Practical buying guide

All seven recommendations are presented through their Steam listings, so the simplest route is to open the storefront page for the title that matches your preferred combat loop. Do not treat the review percentages as a promise that one game will suit every Boltgun fan: they are dated snapshots, and the games deliberately emphasize different skills. A player who dislikes timers may prefer Prodeus or CULTIC; someone who wants to practice movement for dozens of hours should begin with ULTRAKILL; a player looking for a fantasy arsenal should skip straight to AMID EVIL.

There is also no need to buy the entire list at once. Start with the closest mechanical match, then use the tone guide to choose a second game. Prodeus followed by ULTRAKILL gives you a conventional campaign and a technical mastery game. CULTIC followed by Forgive Me Father keeps the horror mood while changing the presentation. Turbo Overkill followed by MULLET MADJACK creates the most mobility-heavy and time-conscious pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Start with ULTRAKILL for the deepest movement-and-style system, Turbo Overkill for the most extravagant mobility, and Prodeus for the most faithful classic-FPS follow-up. Move to AMID EVIL for fantasy, CULTIC for cult horror and explosives, Forgive Me Father for Lovecraftian atmosphere, or MULLET MADJACK for short, brutally fast score attacks.
