Windows Snap is the best first alternative to FancyZones if you only need dependable two-, three- or four-window splits and do not want another utility. For custom, hand-designed zones, FancyZones itself remains the reference point; for mouse-led docking and linked resizing, AquaSnap is the closest fit; DisplayFusion is better when window management is part of a larger multi-monitor setup; and FancyWM is the right choice only if you want automatic tiling rather than a fixed layout.

Those are different workflows, not a universal ranking. Choose the tool that matches how you place windows: predefined snapping, manually designed zones, magnetic mouse docking, saved monitor profiles or automatic tiling.

1. Windows Snap: try the built-in option first

Windows already includes Snap layouts, Snap Assist, keyboard positioning and Snap groups. If your normal routine is “put the browser on the left and chat on the right” or “place four windows in the corners,” it may provide all the structure you need without a background utility.

What Snap provides

  • Snap windows to screen edges and corners.
  • Choose predefined layouts from the maximize button or by dragging a window to a screen edge.
  • Use Snap Assist to fill the remaining spaces with other open windows.
  • Use keyboard positioning to move a window through available snap locations.
  • Keep related windows together with Snap groups so the arrangement can be restored from the taskbar or task switching interface.

Basic Snap workflow

  1. Open the windows you want to arrange.
  2. Drag a title bar to the left or right edge, or to a corner, until the snap preview appears; release to place it.
  3. Select another thumbnail in Snap Assist to occupy the remaining area.
  4. Alternatively, hover over a window’s maximize button and choose one of the displayed layouts.
  5. Use the Windows key with an arrow key to position a window from the keyboard; repeat the direction to move it among available regions.

Snap is the sensible choice when predefined regions are acceptable. It is not a replacement for a bespoke layout with unusually wide, narrow or overlapping zones. In that case, move to FancyZones or another specialized utility.

Windows-version qualification

Microsoft’s Snap documentation remains useful for understanding the feature, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you are still running Windows 10, treat the operating-system support decision separately from whether Snap happens to work on your installation. On supported Windows 11 systems, labels and layout choices can vary by release.

Read the current capability description in Microsoft’s Snap documentation.

2. FancyZones: the custom-zone benchmark

FancyZones is not an alternative to itself, but it defines the custom-layout workflow against which the other choices should be judged. Microsoft describes it as a PowerToys utility for arranging and snapping windows into custom layouts. It is useful to keep it when your problem is “I need my own geometry,” rather than “I need a different kind of window manager.”

Grid layouts versus canvas layouts

  • Grid layouts divide the display into zones whose arrangement resizes with the screen. They are suited to regular columns and rows.
  • Canvas layouts let you position and resize zones freely, including overlapping zones. They are useful when a fixed grid cannot express your working areas.

Controls that make a layout repeatable

You can assign hotkeys to layouts, snap windows with the mouse or keyboard, and manage layouts through the FancyZones command-line interface. Multi-monitor settings and options for popup or child-window snapping help when an application opens auxiliary dialogs. Microsoft also documents considerations for monitors with different DPI settings; a layout that looks correct on one display may need adjustment when displays use different scaling.

Requirements and installation

Microsoft’s current PowerToys page says PowerToys is free and runs on Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 or later on x64 and Arm64 PCs. Install it from Microsoft’s official distribution, open PowerToys Settings, select FancyZones and enable the utility. The lineup and settings can change between PowerToys releases, so check the version you are installing.

3. AquaSnap: closest match for mouse-led docking

AquaSnap is the strongest fit when your hands stay on the mouse and you want windows to react to one another. Its documented behavior includes docking to halves or quarters, magnetic alignment, linked resizing of adjacent tiled windows, directional stretching and moving adjacent windows as a group.

Why its model differs from static zones

With a static zone editor, you design regions first and then place windows into them. AquaSnap emphasizes the relationships between neighboring windows: resizing one tiled window can resize the adjacent window at the same time, and magnetic edges help align windows as you move them. That is useful when you constantly adjust proportions while comparing documents, dashboards or code.

Typical AquaSnap workflow

  1. Open AquaSnap’s settings and review the enabled docking and mouse-shortcut actions before arranging important work.
  2. Drag a window toward an edge or corner until the docking indicator appears, then release to place it in a half or quarter.
  3. Move the boundary between adjacent tiled windows to resize the pair; linked resizing keeps the neighboring edge aligned.
  4. Use directional stretching when you want a window to expand toward an edge without manually finding a precise boundary.
  5. Move a group of adjacent windows together when changing the overall composition, then use magnetic alignment to restore clean edges.

The exact shortcut names and available settings depend on the current AquaSnap release. The vendor’s feature page is the authoritative reference: AquaSnap documentation.

When not to choose it

AquaSnap is a poor fit if your main requirement is a library of named, per-monitor layouts that can be recalled as part of a larger workstation profile. Its documented strengths are docking, alignment and linked manipulation; use DisplayFusion when monitor profiles and display administration are central.

4. DisplayFusion: choose it for broader multi-monitor management

DisplayFusion goes beyond custom zones. Its documented feature set includes window snapping, moving windows between displays, saved window-position profiles, per-monitor taskbars and configurable window functions. That breadth suits a workstation with several monitors, changing desk configurations or recurring application positions.

Capabilities that matter with several displays

  • Move windows between displays: useful when a laptop is docked or undocked and applications open on the wrong screen.
  • Window-position profiles: save a known arrangement and recall it after a restart or workspace change.
  • Per-monitor taskbars: expose monitor-specific taskbar organization instead of treating every screen as one undifferentiated desktop.
  • Configurable window functions: automate or bind common placement actions to the controls you use.
  • Snapping: retain familiar edge-based placement while adding the broader monitor controls.

A practical profile-based setup

  1. Connect every monitor in the arrangement you intend to use and confirm Windows identifies them in the correct left-to-right order.
  2. Place each application where you want it for that physical arrangement.
  3. Create a window-position profile using DisplayFusion’s current profile controls and give it a name that identifies the desk or monitor layout.
  4. Test the profile after closing and reopening one or two applications; applications that delay creating their main window may require a later reapply.
  5. Create separate profiles for docked, undocked or portrait-monitor arrangements rather than forcing one profile across incompatible geometries.

DisplayFusion’s feature descriptions are available from its features page and the more specific window-management page. The available material does not establish a universal license price or guarantee that every application will honor every saved position.

5. FancyWM: a different answer through automatic tiling

FancyWM is for readers who want windows placed automatically as they open. Its project documentation describes a dynamic tiler for Windows 10 and 11: applications are arranged in nested horizontal, vertical or stacked panels, and you can rearrange them with keyboard or mouse controls. It also works with native virtual desktops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dynamic tiling versus a fixed custom layout

In a fixed-zone workflow, you decide that a particular region belongs to a particular kind of work and place windows there manually. A dynamic tiler continuously changes the panel structure as windows enter or leave. That can reduce repetitive dragging when your window count changes, but it requires learning the tiler’s navigation model and accepting that the geometry evolves.

Who should select FancyWM

  • Choose it if you regularly open and close many windows and want new applications to be assigned a panel automatically.
  • Choose it if keyboard navigation and rearrangement are more important than dragging a window to a precisely designed zone.
  • Do not choose it merely because you want a FancyZones clone with identical custom geometry; automatic panel placement is the central design difference.

Installation and verification

The project documents installation through WinGet and the Microsoft Store and targets Windows 10/11. Because project releases and instructions can change, confirm the current package name, release notes and permissions before installing. Start with a small set of windows, learn the navigation and resize commands, then add it to a virtual-desktop workflow.

See the project’s current documentation at the FancyWM repository. Statements there are project claims, not independent performance measurements.

How to choose: a decision framework

Answer these questions in order. The first “yes” often identifies the right category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Are ordinary two-, three- or four-way splits enough? Use Windows Snap and avoid installing anything else.
  2. Do you need zones that you design yourself and reuse? Use FancyZones grid or canvas layouts.
  3. Do you resize neighboring windows together and prefer mouse gestures? Try AquaSnap.
  4. Is the difficult part moving windows across several monitors, restoring positions or managing taskbars? Evaluate DisplayFusion.
  5. Do you want new windows to be tiled automatically? Evaluate FancyWM instead of trying to reproduce a fixed-zone editor.

If two answers apply, identify the primary pain. A tool that excels at automatic tiling may still be frustrating if you need a carefully preserved three-column canvas; a tool with excellent custom zones may not solve a constantly changing multi-monitor desk.

Multi-monitor, scaling and application-compatibility checks

Window managers are most useful when they behave predictably with your actual applications. Before committing to a layout, check the following conditions.

Mixed monitor sizes and DPI

Different resolutions, aspect ratios and scaling percentages change the usable coordinate space. FancyZones specifically documents multi-monitor DPI considerations and settings for popup or child-window snapping. Reopen your layouts after changing Windows display scaling, docking a laptop or rotating a monitor. For profile-based tools, save separate arrangements for materially different monitor geometries.

Minimum-size and unusual dialog behavior

Some applications enforce a minimum window size or create dialogs that cannot be tiled like a normal top-level window. If a zone is narrower than an application’s minimum, the application may refuse to fit, overflow or leave unused space. Test the applications that matter most before designing a layout around them. For FancyZones, review the popup and child-window options rather than assuming every dialog follows its parent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Virtual desktops and reconnects

FancyWM documents support for native virtual desktops. Other tools may restore positions differently after a display disconnect or a desktop switch. Test the exact sequence you use: lock the PC, disconnect the dock, reconnect it and resume. Treat a profile that works only after manual correction as a convenience, not a guaranteed recovery mechanism.

Cost, licensing and support status

PowerToys is free according to Microsoft’s current developer page, and its supported baseline is Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 or later on x64 or Arm64 PCs. That does not make every PowerToys utility available on every future release; check the release you install.

Current comparable prices and license terms for AquaSnap, DisplayFusion and FancyWM are not established here. AquaSnap and DisplayFusion may offer different editions or licensing conditions, while FancyWM’s distribution model can depend on the project release. Migration checklist before replacing FancyZones

  • Record the layouts you actually use, including monitor resolution, scaling percentage and orientation.
  • Note which windows are deliberately oversized, overlapping or assigned to a particular display.
  • Decide whether your replacement must preserve geometry or whether automatic placement is acceptable.
  • Test one representative application with a minimum-size window and one that opens secondary dialogs.
  • Check startup behavior, administrator requirements and whether the tool remains active after sleep, docking and sign-in.
  • Keep a simple fallback: Windows Snap is available even if a third-party utility is disabled or removed.

Troubleshooting common failures

A window will not fit a zone

Check the application’s minimum width and height, Windows display scaling and the zone’s dimensions. Enlarge the zone, change scaling or use a different layout. Do not assume the manager can override an application’s own sizing rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Snapping changes after a monitor is reconnected

Windows may report a different display arrangement or coordinate space. Recheck display order and scaling, then reapply the relevant layout or profile. Separate profiles for docked and undocked states are more reliable than one profile designed for both.

A popup appears outside the expected region

Popups and child windows are not always treated like the main application window. Review the manager’s popup or child-window settings, especially in FancyZones, and test the specific application’s dialog behavior.

Keyboard controls conflict with another utility

List every active hotkey provider, including PowerToys, a tiler, graphics software and keyboard firmware. Change one binding at a time and restart the affected utility so you can identify the conflicting registration.

The layout feels wrong even though it works

This usually indicates a workflow mismatch rather than a defect. Replace a static-zone approach with AquaSnap if you constantly resize neighbors, DisplayFusion if you need profiles across monitors, or FancyWM if manual placement itself is the repetitive task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Start with Windows Snap for ordinary layouts. Use FancyZones when custom grid or canvas geometry is the requirement. Choose AquaSnap for magnetic, mouse-driven docking and linked resizing; DisplayFusion for a broader multi-monitor control layer; and FancyWM only when automatic dynamic tiling matches the way you want windows to appear. None is proven universally fastest or most compatible by the available documentation, so validate the choice with your monitors, scaling and the applications you use every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run Windows Snap alongside another window manager?

Yes. Snap is built into Windows, but overlapping hotkeys or competing snap behaviors can make the combination confusing. Disable duplicate shortcuts in one utility and keep Windows Snap as the fallback while testing the other tool.

Is FancyWM a drop-in replacement for a FancyZones canvas?

No. FancyWM automatically builds and changes nested panels as windows open and close. A FancyZones canvas is manually designed and can contain movable, resizable and overlapping zones.

What should I test before adopting a layout manager on a work PC?

Test your real monitor arrangement, scaling percentages, minimum-size applications, secondary dialogs, sleep and wake, docking changes and sign-in startup. These checks reveal problems that a feature list cannot establish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does PowerToys support ARM64 PCs?

Microsoft’s current PowerToys page lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 or later on both x64 and Arm64 PCs. Verify the requirement against the specific release you plan to install.

Where can I verify the current FancyZones and FancyWM instructions?
