For most families, the best travel card is the one whose annual fee, usable credits, earning categories and family-access costs fit the trips you actually take. Chase Sapphire Preferred is the lower-fee option in this comparison; Venture X can add authorized users without a card fee but charges separately for their lounge access; Citi Strata Premier rewards several common household spending categories; and Sapphire Reserve is a premium-fee benchmark. These are U.S. issuer terms reviewed October 8, 2026—not a guarantee of savings. Recheck the terms before applying.
How to compare travel cards for a family
Start with costs and benefits for the whole household, not a headline points value. A credit only offsets the fee if you would make the qualifying purchase anyway, can use the required booking channel, and would otherwise pay for that purchase. Similarly, adding an authorized user does not necessarily extend every premium benefit at no cost.
- Work out the annual cost. Include the primary card fee, any authorized-user or lounge-access fees, and guest charges your family expects to incur.
- Count only usable credits. Check the qualifying purchase, minimum spend, booking channel and timing. Do not count a credit at face value if you would change your plans to use it.
- Match earning categories to household spending. Consider groceries, dining, gas or EV charging, and travel purchases your family already makes.
- Check protections and access rules. Review the protections that matter for your trips, and confirm current lounge guest and child policies for your itinerary.
- Consider how you redeem and share points. Transfer options and household-sharing rules differ; do not assume points can be freely transferred to every family member.
There is no universal winner: a family that does not use lounges or portal credits may prefer a lower-fee card, while a household that values shared premium travel benefits should calculate additional-user and guest costs before choosing.

Chase Sapphire Preferred: a lower-fee option with a portal credit
Chase announced on June 15, 2026 that Sapphire Preferred keeps its $95 annual fee. The issuer lists 3X points on gas and EV charging, 3X on vacation homes at named brands, 5X on Chase Travel purchases, 2X on other travel and 3X on dining. Its new $100 annual hotel credit applies to hotel stays purchased through Chase Travel. Chase also says travel protections now include emergency evacuation and transportation coverage. See Chase’s Sapphire Preferred announcement and card terms.
The credit is not the same as an unrestricted $100 rebate: its value depends on whether you book an eligible stay through Chase Travel. Include that booking restriction in your household’s calculation rather than subtracting the full credit automatically.

What household point-sharing allows
Chase’s rewards agreement allows point transfers, in 1,000-point increments, to participating travel-program accounts belonging to the cardholder or one additional household member who is an authorized user. The receiving program’s rules apply, and transfers can take time to process. This is a specific household provision, not permission to transfer points to any relative. Read Chase’s rewards agreement.
Capital One Venture X: calculate lounge costs for every traveler
Capital One says Venture X allows up to four authorized users, and its account-user guidance says there is no fee to add them. The primary account holder remains responsible for authorized-user charges. Lounge access is a separate calculation: Capital One’s guidance lists a $125 annual fee for each additional cardholder receiving lounge access. See Capital One’s authorized-user guidance and its Venture X lounge-access terms.
