For a strong all-around Fallout 4 setup on Steam Deck, use 1280×800, Medium detail, High textures, Medium shadows and shadow distance, Medium decals, High lighting, Godrays Off, SSAO, screen-space reflections Off, motion blur Off, and medium object, actor, grass, and item fade values. A 10W TDP limit is the tested starting point. Windows Central reported 50–60 fps in this configuration, with occasional dips to about 40 fps.
For longer battery sessions, lower the preset to Low, keep textures at Medium, reduce lighting and decals to Medium, set shadows and shadow distance to Low, disable lens flare, motion blur, wetness, and rain occlusion, and leave FSR off. FSR can improve reconstruction quality, but the cited testing found it power-hungry, so it is better reserved for plugged-in or docked play.
Recommended Fallout 4 profiles at a glance
These profiles target different compromises rather than one universal “best” setting. Fallout 4’s open-world scenes can stress the Deck differently from one location to another, so the useful question is whether you value steadier performance, longer unplugged sessions, or image quality while connected to power.

The balanced result comes from Windows Central’s 2024 testing. Its report said the game was usually held in a 50–60 fps range but sometimes fell into the 40 fps range. That is an observation under that publication’s test conditions, not a guarantee for every save, driver, operating-system build, or area of the game.

How to configure the balanced profile
Set the display and global detail first
- Open Fallout 4’s graphics settings and select a resolution of 1280×800, the Steam Deck’s native 16:10 target.
- Set the overall detail preset to Medium.
- Change texture quality to High. Textures are kept above the general detail preset in this profile to preserve surface detail without raising every other workload.
Reduce the expensive scene effects
- Set shadow quality to Medium.
- Set shadow distance to Medium. Lowering both shadow controls together avoids retaining a long-distance shadow workload after reducing only shadow resolution.
- Set decals to Medium.
- Set lighting to High.
- Turn Godrays Off. Windows Central identifies this as a high-value performance adjustment.
- Use SSAO for ambient occlusion.
- Turn screen-space reflections Off.
- Turn motion blur Off. This keeps camera movement clearer and removes an effect that does not improve frame-rate stability.
Use moderate object and vegetation distances
Keep object fade, actor fade, grass fade, and item fade at Medium. These sliders determine how far different categories remain visible. Raising them can make distant scenery or objects more persistent, but it also increases the amount of world data the game must draw. Lowering them is a further tuning option if a particular location remains difficult, while Medium is the practical starting point in the tested balanced profile.
Apply the 10W TDP starting point
Use the Steam Deck performance overlay or per-game performance menu to set the TDP limit to 10W. This is the balanced profile’s stated starting point, not a promise that every Deck will deliver the same frame rate at that limit. If you remove the limit, the system can draw more power; if you lower it, you may gain battery life at the cost of more frequent performance drops.
Battery-first settings
When play time away from a charger matters more than distant detail, reduce the effects that add lighting, shadow, weather, and transparency work. The battery profile keeps the native 1280×800 resolution but lowers the scene complexity around it.

Pro Game Guides specifically advises avoiding FSR for battery saving because it draws substantial power. The battery recommendation therefore does not treat upscaling as automatically more efficient: a reconstruction feature can reduce some rendering work while still increasing total system consumption in this game.
What changes visually
Low shadows and shadow distance make lighting transitions and distant shadows less detailed. Turning off wetness and rain occlusion removes weather-related shading, while Low detail reduces the complexity of the broader scene. Medium textures prevent the battery preset from becoming needlessly blurry at the native resolution, but they do not preserve every high-detail surface from the balanced profile.
When to lower the workload further
If the game still struggles in a dense settlement or other demanding area, reduce fade distances from Medium one category at a time, starting with grass or objects. Make one change, revisit the same type of scene, and keep the change only if the improvement is worth the reduced draw distance. The supplied battery guidance does not establish a universal TDP value or a guaranteed frame rate for this lower-power profile, so treat the Deck’s own frame-time and battery readings as the deciding evidence.

Quality while plugged in or docked
Begin with the balanced profile rather than immediately raising every slider. It already keeps textures and lighting high while controlling shadows, reflections, godrays, and fade distances. If you are connected to a charger or dock and want to try AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), enable it then. Windows Central describes FSR as useful but power-hungry and recommends it for plugged-in or docked play; Pro Game Guides reaches the same practical conclusion from the battery perspective by advising against it when unplugged.
FSR is therefore a power-versus-reconstruction choice, not a guaranteed frame-rate fix. If enabling it makes the image look worse at your preferred sharpness or does not solve a specific slowdown, turn it back off rather than compensating by raising several other settings at once.
Getting Fallout 4’s launcher back
Some Deck launch flows hide the traditional Fallout 4 launcher, which removes its graphics configuration screen. Pro Game Guides reports that the following launch option restores that path:

- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Select Fallout 4, then open Properties.
- Stay on the General page and find Launch Options.
- Enter exactly:
SteamDeck=0 %command% - Close the Properties window and start the game.
Capitalization matters in this command. If the launcher still does not appear, check that there are no extra quotation marks, missing spaces, or typographical changes. This option is intended to restore access to the launcher’s graphics controls; it does not replace the Steam Deck performance settings menu.

SteamDB records Fallout 4 (App ID 377160) as Steam Deck Verified. Its compatibility record lists successful SteamOS operation, a compatibility-test timestamp of 18 June 2024, and Proton 9.0-2RC as the recommended runtime in the record available in 2026. The record’s compatibility text says, “This game’s default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck.”
Verified status means the game has passed Valve’s Deck compatibility criteria for the recorded configuration; it does not mean every graphics option, mod, plug-in, display mode, or later update behaves identically. If a future SteamOS or game update changes the launcher or frame pacing, check the game’s current compatibility information before assuming that an older workaround is still needed.

OLED half-refresh behavior: an optional workaround
A personal troubleshooting report describes an OLED Deck in which the displayed frame rate effectively tracked half of the panel’s refresh rate. The author reported smoother motion after changing iPresentInterval to 0 in Fallout4Prefs.ini, launching the game once first, and using a 60 Hz per-game profile.
This is an affected-system workaround, not a universal OLED requirement. The report is anecdotal and was not independently tested for this guide. Try it only if your own OLED Deck shows the described half-refresh behavior.
How to test the workaround carefully
- Launch Fallout 4 once so that the preferences file exists.
- Switch to Desktop mode and use a text editor to locate
Fallout4Prefs.ini. - Find the
iPresentIntervalentry and change its value to0. - Save the file, return to Gaming Mode, and create a per-game display profile at 60 Hz.
- Test the same scene before and after the change. If motion is not improved, restore the original value rather than treating the edit as mandatory.
Because frame pacing can vary with the game build, SteamOS version, display profile, and device, record the original value before editing. Do not use this workaround to explain ordinary dips from 60 fps into the 40 fps range; those are a separate performance observation from Windows Central’s balanced-profile testing.

LCD and OLED Deck considerations
The graphics recommendations apply to Steam Deck hardware running SteamOS, but the evidence separates one OLED-specific frame-pacing report from the broader performance guidance. The balanced and battery profiles are not presented as LCD-only or OLED-only presets. The half-refresh issue, by contrast, should be treated as an OLED symptom reported by one user rather than a normal property of every OLED Deck.
For either screen type, use the Deck’s performance overlay to observe frame rate, frame-time behavior, and power draw while visiting the scene that bothers you. A profile that feels smooth in an interior may dip outdoors or in a dense settlement. Change one setting group at a time so you can identify whether shadows, fade distance, weather effects, or upscaling is responsible for the difference.

Troubleshooting checklist
- The launcher is missing: verify the exact
SteamDeck=0 %command%launch option, including capitalization and the space before%command%. - Battery drains faster than expected: confirm FSR is Off, then use the battery profile’s Low detail, Low shadows, disabled wetness, and disabled rain occlusion.
- Performance is uneven outdoors: check that godrays are Off and fade distances are not above the Medium balanced values. For battery play, lower the fade categories one at a time.
- The image is too soft: the battery profile uses Medium textures at native 1280×800; do not enable FSR solely for battery savings. Compare the balanced profile with FSR Off before deciding whether the reconstruction benefit is worth the power cost.
- OLED motion seems capped at half refresh: treat it as the specific symptom described in the anecdotal report and test the optional
iPresentInterval=0change with a 60 Hz per-game profile.
