The best fact-checking website depends on the claim. Use FactCheck.org for U.S. political statements and a transparently edited review process, PolitiFact when you want a clearly explained accuracy rating, and Full Fact for claims involving UK institutions, public bodies, media or viral online content. For any important claim, read the evidence linked by the checker and, where possible, the original record rather than treating a label as the final answer.
This guide shows how those organizations work, how to choose between them, and a repeatable method for checking a news story, image, video or post before you share it.
Best fact-checking websites at a glance
| Website | Best fit | Documented approach |
|---|---|---|
| FactCheck.org | U.S. political claims, speeches, transcripts, official websites, press releases and reader questions | Researchers seek factual claims that may be inaccurate or misleading, contact the responsible person or organization, conduct independent research, and rely on primary sources, nonpartisan government agencies and outside experts. Stories normally receive line editing, copy editing and line-by-line fact-checking; most are reviewed by four people not involved in reporting and writing. |
| PolitiFact | Newsworthy political statements likely to spread and prompt readers to ask whether they are true | Publishes sources with every fact-check, emphasizes original documentation, and contacts or attempts to contact the claim maker. Its Truth-O-Meter uses six labels: True, Mostly True, Half True, Mostly False, False and Pants on Fire. |
| Full Fact | Claims by UK politicians and public institutions, media reports and viral online content | An indexed official methodology summary says another researcher reviews each item before publication. The methodology page returned a 410 error when checked, so consult the live page for any updated workflow details. |
The table is a starting point, not a global ranking. Coverage, staffing and policies change, and no site checks every claim in every language.
What makes a fact-checking site useful?
A fact-check is most useful when it lets you reconstruct the path from a circulating statement to evidence. Evaluate the site and the individual article on seven questions.
#1 Best Overall

Does it fit the geography?
Start with the country, language and institutions involved. A claim about a national budget needs a checker that understands that country’s law, agencies and statistics. A U.S.-focused article may not be able to interpret a ministry document from another jurisdiction, while a UK-focused checker may not cover a local election elsewhere. Search in the language used by the original post when possible.
Does it cover the topic?
Some organizations concentrate on politics; others also investigate health, science, media manipulation, statistics, images and video. Check the site’s archive or search filters before assuming it handles your subject. A medical claim may require a review of a study or clinical guidance, while an edited video requires frame-by-frame context and a search for the original upload.
Does it explain why the claim was selected?
Strong organizations describe selecting claims that are verifiable, consequential or spreading widely. This helps distinguish a documented check from an opinion column. It also tells you what the site does not attempt: a checker may ignore an obscure post with no public impact even when the statement is technically false.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can you inspect the evidence?
Look for links to statutes, official datasets, research papers, transcripts, court records, direct statements or the original image and video. A conclusion without a source list leaves you unable to test the reasoning. Prefer a fact-check that quotes the relevant passage and explains how the source supports or undermines the claim.
Are fairness and contact practices visible?
Check whether the organization applies the same evidentiary standard to equivalent claims and says whether it contacted the speaker. Contact is not a guarantee that the claim is valid; it gives the speaker an opportunity to provide documents or clarify wording. An article should tell you when a response was unavailable.
Does it disclose uncertainty and corrections?
Reliable checks distinguish false, misleading, incomplete and unproven. They identify ambiguity, missing data and changes over time. Find a corrections page or correction notice and see whether errors are acknowledged openly rather than silently edited.

Is there an editorial review step?
Independent editing or a second researcher can catch arithmetic, attribution and interpretation errors. Treat a stated review process as evidence of procedure, not proof that every article is correct.

FactCheck.org’s process page says its staff monitor political transcripts, speeches, official websites, press releases and reader questions. Researchers look for factual statements that may be inaccurate or misleading, then try to engage the person or organization responsible. When support is absent or inadequate, they conduct independent research.
The organization says it relies on primary sources, nonpartisan government agencies and outside experts. Its editing sequence includes line editing, copy editing and line-by-line fact-checking. Most stories are reviewed by four people who were not involved in reporting and writing the article. That description is valuable when you need to understand how a political claim moved from a speech to a published finding.
How to use it effectively
- Copy the exact sentence from the speech, post or transcript into FactCheck.org’s search field.
- Open the closest matching article and confirm the speaker, date, location and wording.
- Read the source links, especially the underlying government document or transcript.
- Check whether the article distinguishes a factual error from a prediction, opinion or changed circumstance.
- Use the contact and editing information to understand what was verified and what remains uncertain.
FactCheck.org’s process page identifies a partnership with Meta that ran from December 2016 through April 2025 and says the platform had no editorial control over its content. That is a historical partnership, not evidence of a current arrangement. The same page describes FactCheck.org as an International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) verified signatory; signatory status is evaluated annually, so check the current IFCN roster before treating that status as current.
PolitiFact: a labeled scale with article-level evidence
PolitiFact’s Truth-O-Meter methodology says it chooses newsworthy and significant claims rooted in verifiable facts, likely to spread and likely to make readers ask whether they are true. It publishes sources with each fact-check, emphasizes original documentation and contacts or attempts to contact the claim maker.

- True: The statement is accurate and leaves out no important context.
- Mostly True: The central idea is accurate, but wording or context introduces a meaningful qualification.
- Half True: The statement contains a mixture of accurate and inaccurate elements.
- Mostly False: The statement includes a small element of truth but overlooks or misstates important facts.
- False: The statement is not accurate.
- Pants on Fire: PolitiFact’s strongest designation for a claim that is not merely wrong but wildly inaccurate.
These labels are PolitiFact’s own scale. The methodology says ratings reflect the relative accuracy of a statement based on information known at the time it was made. A label therefore cannot be compared numerically with a rating from another organization.

How to read beyond the badge
Open the article’s source list and read the explanation before sharing a screenshot of the meter. Check the date of the statement, because later events can change what was knowable at the time. Look for the exact wording PolitiFact rated; a short social-media paraphrase may not be the same claim. If the article cites a dataset, open that dataset and verify the period, denominator and definition used.
Full Fact: useful for UK institutions and viral content
Full Fact’s official site describes checking claims by politicians, public institutions, media organizations and people sharing viral online content. That combination makes it a useful destination when a post mixes a political statement with a misleading headline, image or statistic.
An indexed summary of Full Fact’s methodology says another researcher reviews each item before publication. The methodology URL returned a 410 (gone) response when checked, so do not assume that summary captures the organization’s current workflow. Use the live site’s current policy pages for present-day details, and treat the second-researcher statement as the limit of what is established here.

- A claim names the UK government, Parliament, NHS, local authorities or another UK public institution.
- A media report or viral post uses a UK statistic without showing its source.
- You need a check that addresses online content as well as a politician’s statement.
As with any checker, match the exact date, country and version of the claim. A Full Fact article about an earlier policy announcement may not answer a later post using the same wording.
Use the IFCN Code as a quality checklist
The IFCN Code of Principles sets out standards that are useful even when you are not checking membership. Its commitments include applying the same evidentiary standards to equivalent claims, explaining how claims are selected, disclosing relevant interests, publishing methodology, presenting evidence that supports and undermines a claim, contacting claim makers when possible and correcting mistakes openly.
Use the code as a list of questions, not a seal of infallibility. A site may follow several principles without being a current signatory, and signatory status can change. The code also cannot replace reading the article: an organization can have a sound policy while an individual check contains an error that later needs correction.

How to verify a news story or viral claim step by step
- Preserve the original wording. Copy the complete sentence, caption or headline. Save the post’s date, account, attached image or video and any visible location. Do not rely on a cropped screenshot that removes qualifiers.
- Search more than one relevant checker. Try the exact wording in quotation marks, then search distinctive phrases without punctuation. Choose sites that match the country, language and subject. If the claim concerns a local institution, include its name in the query.
- Match the version precisely. Check who made the statement, when it was made, where the event occurred and whether the image or video is being presented as current. A fact-check may address the same words used in a different year or country.
- Read the full article. Do not stop at a search-result snippet or rating badge. Identify the conclusion, the evidence cited and any qualifications about uncertainty, definitions or missing information.
- Open primary records. Follow links to the law, official release, transcript, dataset, study, court filing or original upload. Confirm that the quoted passage actually says what the fact-check claims and that the date and geographic scope match.
- Test the arithmetic and context. For statistics, inspect the denominator, time period, comparison group and whether the number is nominal or adjusted. For images and video, look for the earliest available upload and evidence of editing or reuse.
- Seek a second assessment for high-stakes claims. Compare another organization when the evidence is disputed, the consequences are serious or the first article relies on an interpretation rather than a primary record.
- Share with context. Include the fact-check’s date, the article link and the explanation, not just a one-word label. Say when evidence is incomplete or the conclusion applies only to a particular version of the claim.
Why two fact-checkers can reach different conclusions
Disagreement does not automatically mean one organization is dishonest. The sites may have evaluated different wording, dates, sources or thresholds for a label. One may classify a statement as “Mostly True” because its central claim is correct but lacks context, while another may call the same wording misleading because the omitted context changes the practical impression.
Ratings also describe a claim at a particular point in time. New data, a correction to an official record or a later clarification from the speaker can change the evidence without changing what was knowable when the statement was made. Compare the article’s reasoning and source list rather than averaging labels.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the sector’s capacity means for readers
Fact-checking organizations work under uneven staffing constraints. The Poynter/IFCN State of Fact-Checkers 2023 survey recorded 137 responses: 68% of surveyed organizations had 10 or fewer full-time employees, while 6.6% employed 31 or more. The survey also found that 49.6% reported an increase in staff and 5.8% reported workforce reductions. These are survey findings, not a census of every fact-checking group.
The Associated Press reported on April 2, 2025 that the IFCN had more than 170 members at that time. That count is historical and should not be treated as a current roster total. Capacity limits help explain why a checker may not address a rapidly spreading claim immediately or may narrow its selection to claims with broad public consequences.
Angie Drobnic Holan, director of the IFCN, told the Associated Press: “Disinformation hurts people. It has real-world consequences.” The practical implication is to slow down before sharing claims that could affect health, safety, elections, finances or someone’s reputation.

- Searching only one site: A relevant checker may not have selected the claim yet, or may cover a different country or language.
- Comparing labels as a universal scale: “Half True” and a different site’s equivalent are not standardized measurements.
- Ignoring dates: A check can be accurate for an earlier version of an event but irrelevant to a later update.
- Confusing a missing check with proof: No result means the claim has not been found or selected, not that it is true.
- Sharing a badge without the explanation: A label strips away the evidence, caveats and time context that make the article useful.
- Accepting a secondary summary: Follow the link to the original document and verify the quoted section yourself.
- Assuming a methodology page never changes: Policies, partnerships and signatory listings can be updated or removed; check the live page when the distinction matters.

Claim involving UK public institutions
Start with Full Fact. Confirm the department, policy date and statistical definition, then open the government record cited by the article.
Viral image or video with no clear speaker
Use a checker that covers viral online content, search distinctive captions and investigate the earliest upload. Verify location and date before deciding whether the media is authentic or merely reused out of context.
Health, science or statistical claim
Choose a site that covers the topic and then read the underlying study, dataset or public-health guidance. Check publication date, sample or population, and whether the fact-check distinguishes correlation from causation.
Claim with serious consequences
Use at least two relevant fact-checkers and consult the primary document directly. Delay sharing until you can explain the evidence and the uncertainty in your own words.
Bottom line
There is no single universal “best” fact-checking website. Match the organization to the claim’s geography and subject, inspect its methodology and corrections practices, and follow its links to original evidence. FactCheck.org, PolitiFact and Full Fact provide useful starting points for different kinds of claims, but the responsible endpoint is your own review of the documentation and context—not a rating badge alone.
