The best external drive for a Mac depends on what you store and how often you move it. Choose an HDD when capacity is the priority and the files are mostly archived or used for backups; choose an SSD when portability and faster transfers matter. HDDs and SSDs are different technologies, not interchangeable names for the same drive.
HDD or SSD: which suits your Mac?
External hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) address different needs. HDDs are a sensible option for capacity-focused storage and files you access less often. SSDs are more relevant for portable work files and frequent large transfers, where faster performance can matter. Neither type is universally best.
| What you need | Drive type to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Affordable space for a large archive or backups | Portable or desktop HDD | Capacity, cost, connector, expected performance, power needs, and how often you will move it. |
| Portable files and frequent large transfers | External SSD | Interface supported by both the drive and Mac, capacity, ruggedness, and price. |
| A large library kept at a desk | Desktop HDD or RAID storage | Capacity, mains power, connection options, and whether redundancy or dock features are actually useful. |
| Mac backups | External drive configured for Time Machine | Apple’s current setup and formatting instructions for your macOS version. |
Apple’s Mac storage catalog lists both HDD and SSD products, as well as desktop RAID systems. Examples include rugged portable HDDs such as the G-DRIVE ArmorATD, portable SSDs such as the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, and desktop storage such as the LaCie 1big Dock. These illustrate the range of options; they are not a universal ranking.

For capacity and less-frequently used files, consider an HDD
An HDD can suit a large archive, media library, or backup when capacity matters more than fast transfers. Portable HDDs are easier to move, while desktop models are intended to stay in one place and some require mains power. Compare the connector, power arrangement, capacity, and expected HDD-level performance before choosing.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Current comparison examples include the WD My Passport Ultra for Mac, Seagate Ultra Touch HDD, SanDisk Professional G-Drive ArmorATD, LaCie Mobile Drive, WD My Book, and LaCie 1big Dock. They vary in portability, capacity, connections, power needs, and other features, so treat model lists as a way to compare trade-offs rather than a permanent ranking. See Macworld’s external HDD comparison for its current model-by-model guide.
For portable work and frequent transfers, consider an SSD
An external SSD is a better category to investigate when you carry files between locations or regularly transfer large projects. Compare the actual interface and the drive’s compatibility with your Mac, alongside capacity, ruggedness, and price. The interface alone does not guarantee a particular transfer speed.

For a desk-based library, consider desktop storage or RAID
A desktop HDD or RAID system can be appropriate when a large library will remain at a workstation. Check whether it needs mains power and whether its connection options or additional dock features match your setup. RAID features add complexity; choose them only if the capabilities meet a real storage need. Apple’s storage catalog includes desktop HDD and RAID products, but the category alone does not establish that a particular system is right for your Mac.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Check ports and real-world compatibility
USB-C describes a connector, not the complete performance capability of a drive. Check the drive’s interface specification and the ports supported by your Mac. A connection may work while delivering less than the drive’s advertised maximum. In particular, Thunderbolt 5 performance depends on the host Mac model and software, so verify both the computer and drive specifications rather than assuming every Mac can use the full capability.
Before buying, confirm that the drive’s connection can be used with your Mac and that any adapter or cable you need is accounted for. Product listings include both USB-C and Thunderbolt options, but the connector label alone does not tell you the full performance story.

Use an external drive for Time Machine backups
Time Machine is Apple’s Mac backup feature. A drive used for Time Machine needs to be set up according to Apple’s current instructions, including any applicable formatting guidance. Do not assume that a drive is ready for your intended Mac use just because it connects: some products ship formatted as exFAT or for Windows.
Check Apple’s current instructions for backing up a Mac with Time Machine before setup. Formatting or erasing a drive destroys existing data, so copy off anything you need to keep before following instructions that erase or reformat it. A single drive is a storage device, not a guarantee that data is safe; use a backup process and consult Apple’s guidance for your macOS version.

What to compare before buying
- Capacity and cost: Match the space to your archive, working files, or backup needs, and compare the price for the capacity you actually need.
- Performance and interface: Consider whether your workload benefits from faster transfers, then confirm the drive and Mac support the relevant connection.
- Portability and power: A compact portable drive suits travel; a desktop model may need mains power and a permanent spot.
- Ruggedness: If you will carry the drive, compare how it is designed to handle travel and everyday use.
- Mac setup: Check the shipping format and Apple’s current instructions for your intended use, especially for Time Machine.
- Extra features: Pay for RAID, dock connections, or other additions only when they solve a specific workflow requirement.
Examples of Mac external storage categories
Apple’s catalog and current buying guides show several distinct options rather than one drive that fits every Mac owner. Rugged portable HDDs offer a capacity-focused portable choice; desktop HDDs and RAID systems target desk-based storage; portable SSDs target mobile workflows where transfer performance and compactness matter. Among examples listed in Apple’s catalog are the Western Digital G-DRIVE ArmorATD, LaCie portable and desktop drives, SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, and SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 SSD.
These names are examples, not endorsements or a promise of current availability. Product specifications, model versions, and listings can change, so check the maker’s current specifications and the Mac compatibility details before purchase.
