For most PC and console owners, the 2TB or 4TB Samsung T7 Shield is the safest all-around choice for storing large games. It uses USB 3.2 Gen 2, with Samsung-rated sequential speeds of up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write, and it follows official USB power specifications. If your computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps) port, the Crucial X10 Pro or WD_BLACK P40 can shorten transfers. Console rules matter more than peak speed: PS5 games must be copied back to the console before play, while Xbox Series X|S optimized games need an official expansion card to run directly.

Quick answer: which external SSD should you buy?

Choose the drive according to the device that will use it, not just the largest number on the product box.

  • Best all-purpose archive: Samsung T7 Shield in 2TB or 4TB. It combines a 10Gbps-class interface, useful ruggedness and broad PC/console compatibility.
  • Best for a 20Gbps PC: Crucial X10 Pro. A compatible USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 host and cable are required to approach its advertised performance.
  • Best gaming-focused 20Gbps option: WD_BLACK P40 Game Drive SSD. It can play and store Xbox One games and archive Xbox Series X|S optimized games, but it does not replace an Xbox expansion card for current-generation play.
  • Portable PS5-transfer option: SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PS5. It is a roughly 1,000MB/s-class drive documented for PS5 transfers and direct PC game-library use.

Use 2TB as the practical minimum for one or two very large games plus other titles. Select 4TB when the SSD will hold a wider PC or console archive. No authoritative GTA 6 installation size has been established, so do not buy a drive based on an unconfirmed file-size rumor.

What makes an external SSD suitable for large games?

Host interface speed

A drive rated for 1,000MB/s or more cannot deliver that rate through a slower port. USB 3.2 Gen 2 provides a 10Gbps link and is the class used by the Samsung T7 Shield. USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 provides 20Gbps and is needed for the higher figures quoted for the Crucial X10 Pro and WD_BLACK P40. Your computer, the drive, and the cable must all support the same faster standard; otherwise the connection falls back to the slower mode.

  • Kick loading into overdrive with a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 interface and speeds up to 2,000MB/s. (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
  • Compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. {Compatible with PlayStation 4 Pro or PS4 with system software version 4.50 or higher, PlayStation 5 (Play and store PS4 games; archive PS5 games), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S (Play and store Xbox One games; archive Xbox Series X|S games).}
  • Keep more of the latest and largest titles installed and ready to launch with capacities of up to 2TB. (1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.)
  • Built with WD_BLACK toughness thanks to a shock-resistant structure, this durable drive can survive a drop of up to two-meters.

PlayStation and Xbox consoles also impose their own limits. A 20Gbps SSD attached to a 10Gbps or 5Gbps console port will not transfer at its headline PC speed. Check the port specification and use the cable supplied with, or explicitly rated for, the required USB mode.

Capacity that remains useful after formatting

Manufacturers label storage in decimal terabytes, while operating systems report somewhat less usable space after formatting and file-system overhead. Game updates, shader caches, downloadable content and save backups also consume room. A 2TB model therefore gives you practical headroom rather than a full 2,000GB of game files, and a 4TB model is easier to manage when several large releases share the drive.

Sustained transfers, not only burst numbers

Sequential read and write figures describe idealized large-file transfers. Copying a game can involve many files, background activity and a drive that slows after its cache fills. The host port and cable are often the limiting factors. For a concrete reference, GamesRadar+ reported moving a 53.73GB game to a Samsung T7 Shield in 4 minutes 30 seconds in a 2026 test. That is a single test result, not a guaranteed time for every computer, game or cable.

Ruggedness and portability

An external game drive is frequently unplugged, carried between rooms or transported to a friend’s house. A protected enclosure is valuable for an archive drive, but ruggedness does not make a drive waterproof in every situation or protect data from accidental deletion. Keep a second copy of irreplaceable files and eject the SSD before disconnecting it.

Best external SSDs for GTA 6 and other large games

Drive Interface and advertised speed Best use Important limitation
Samsung T7 Shield USB 3.2 Gen 2; up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write General-purpose PC, PS5 and Xbox archive; portable transfers A 10Gbps-class drive cannot match 20Gbps models on a compatible 20Gbps PC

Samsung T7 Shield: the safest default

The T7 Shield is the balanced choice when one SSD must serve several devices. Samsung specifies sequential read speeds up to 1,050MB/s and sequential writes up to 1,000MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2. Samsung also states that it complies with official USB power specifications, which helps when the drive is connected to a console or a laptop rather than a desktop with abundant power.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Pick 2TB if the drive will hold a small active rotation and 4TB if it will be a long-term archive. Its 10Gbps interface is fast enough for practical console transfers and most PCs, while the protected design is better suited to being carried than a bare internal SSD in an enclosure. The 53.73GB transfer reported by GamesRadar+ took 4 minutes 30 seconds under that test’s conditions; your result will vary with the source drive, destination, port, cable and background activity.

Crucial X10 Pro: for computers with 20Gbps USB

The X10 Pro makes sense when your computer explicitly supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. The cited buying guide lists up to 2,100MB/s sequential reads and 2,000MB/s sequential writes. Those are interface-dependent maximums, not speeds every laptop or desktop can reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before paying for the faster model, inspect the computer’s technical specifications or port markings. USB-C describes the connector shape, not the bandwidth. A USB-C port can be 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 20Gbps or USB4. If the host is only 10Gbps, the X10 Pro will behave like a slower external SSD and the extra cost may not reduce transfer times.

WD_BLACK P40 Game Drive SSD: a 20Gbps gaming option

Western Digital lists the P40 at up to 2,000MB/s read. Its compatibility information distinguishes what the drive can do on Xbox: it can play and store Xbox One games and archive Xbox Series X|S optimized games. That distinction is essential. Current-generation optimized games can be stored externally, but the console requires an official expansion card to run them directly.

On a compatible 20Gbps PC, the P40 is a sensible choice for moving large installations quickly. On a PS5, its higher PC interface speed does not change Sony’s rule that PS5 titles must be copied to internal console storage before play.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PS5: simple console transfers

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PS5 is documented as a portable, approximately 1,000MB/s-class option for transferring PS5 data and using a game library directly on a PC. It is useful when the same drive moves between a console and a computer, but it should be purchased with realistic expectations: no USB external SSD can make PS5 games playable directly from USB extended storage.

How much storage should you reserve for GTA 6?

There is no authoritative GTA 6 installation-size figure established in the available product and platform guidance. Treat every precise number circulating before an official PC or console listing as unconfirmed.

When 2TB is enough

A 2TB SSD is the practical floor for one or two very large games alongside several ordinary titles. It gives room for the operating system’s formatting overhead, patches and downloadable content without forcing you to delete a game after every major update. It is also easier to carry and usually costs less than a 4TB model.

When to choose 4TB or larger

Choose 4TB when the drive is intended as a broad archive: several large open-world games, a PC library shared across computers, or a console rotation that you do not want to redownload. Larger capacities are useful for keeping older versions and expansion content, but verify that your platform supports the capacity. For PS5 USB extended storage, Sony specifies a minimum of 250GB and a maximum of 8TB.

Plan for updates rather than the launch download alone

Reserve free space for patches, texture packs, downloadable expansions and temporary installation files. A drive that is technically large enough for the initial download can become inconveniently full after several updates. Keeping at least several hundred gigabytes free is a practical buffer, although the exact amount depends on how many games you maintain.

PlayStation 5: what an external SSD can and cannot do

PS5 games must return to internal storage to play

Sony Interactive Entertainment states: “To play your PS5 games, you need to copy game data from your USB extended storage back to your PS5 console storage.” An external SSD is therefore a fast shelf for PS5 games, not a replacement for the internal SSD or a compatible internal M.2 upgrade. Copying a game back is still necessary each time you want to play it.

PS4 games can run directly from USB

Sony also states: “You can play PS4 games directly from USB extended storage.” This is the main way an external SSD can expand a PS5’s playable library without repeatedly moving data. PS4 games benefit from SSD responsiveness compared with a mechanical hard drive, although the console’s USB interface remains the ceiling.

PS5 external-storage requirements

  • Use SuperSpeed USB rated at 5Gbps or faster.
  • Use a drive with at least 250GB capacity.
  • Do not exceed Sony’s 8TB maximum for USB extended storage.
  • Format the drive as USB extended storage when the PS5 prompts you; formatting erases existing data.

PS5 setup and transfer steps

  1. Connect the SSD directly to a rear or front high-speed USB port on the PS5. Avoid an unpowered hub during setup.
  2. Open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage and choose the connected drive.
  3. Select Format as USB Extended Storage if the drive has not already been formatted for the console. Copy any needed files elsewhere first because formatting deletes them.
  4. To move an installed title, open Game Library, highlight the game, press the Options button, and choose the storage-management command for moving or copying games and apps.
  5. For a PS5 title, move or copy it back to the console’s internal storage before launching. PS4 titles can remain on the USB drive and run from there.

Internal M.2 storage is different

A compatible internal M.2 SSD installed in the PS5 can run both PS5 and PS4 games directly. That is a different upgrade path from a portable USB SSD and requires compatibility with Sony’s internal-storage specifications and installation procedure.

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One rules

What an external SSD can play

An external SSD is useful for Xbox One games and for storing a large Series X|S library. Western Digital’s compatibility table identifies the P40 as able to play and store Xbox One games and archive Xbox Series X|S optimized games.

Why an expansion card is still required for optimized games

TechSpot explains that Xbox Series X|S current-generation games require official expansion cards to run directly. The external SSD can hold those games and speed up moving them back, but it is not a substitute for the console’s expansion-card storage.

PC game libraries: when a faster SSD helps

PC owners have the most flexibility. A compatible launcher can install or move a library to an external SSD, and the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PS5 is specifically documented for direct PC game-library play. Whether a particular game runs correctly from removable storage depends on its launcher, anti-cheat system and file permissions.

Use the fastest port available

For a T7 Shield or SanDisk drive, a 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 port is the appropriate match. For the X10 Pro or P40, look for an explicitly identified 20Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 port. A USB4 port may support high speeds, but the exact result depends on the computer, cable and drive controller; do not assume every USB4 connection reaches a product’s advertised maximum.

Move a library without breaking the launcher

  1. Connect the SSD and format it with the file system supported by your operating system and game launcher.
  2. Create a dedicated game-library folder on the SSD rather than scattering files across the root of the drive.
  3. Use the launcher’s built-in move or install-location command whenever possible. This preserves manifests and avoids redownloading.
  4. After the move, launch one game and verify saves, add-ons and anti-cheat components before moving the rest of the library.
  5. Eject the SSD through the operating system before unplugging it. Sudden removal during a write can corrupt the library.

Choosing between 10Gbps and 20Gbps drives

Your equipment Best fit Why
Console USB port or PC limited to 5Gbps Any reputable 10Gbps-class SSD, including the T7 Shield A faster-rated drive cannot overcome the host limit
PC with USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) Samsung T7 Shield or SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Good balance of speed, compatibility and portability
PC with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps) Crucial X10 Pro or WD_BLACK P40 Can use the higher interface bandwidth with a matching cable
PS5 external storage 2TB or 4TB 10Gbps-class SSD Transfer speed and capacity matter; PS5 games still require internal play storage
Xbox Series X|S archive 2TB or 4TB external SSD Stores optimized games, but direct play requires an official expansion card

Buying checklist

  • Capacity: Start at 2TB; choose 4TB for a multi-game archive. Confirm the platform’s maximum before buying larger.
  • Interface: Match the SSD to the host port. USB-C connector shape alone does not indicate 10Gbps or 20Gbps operation.
  • Cable: Use a cable rated for the drive’s interface. An older or charge-only cable can force a slower connection or prevent detection.
  • Power: Prefer a drive that follows the host platform’s USB power requirements, especially for consoles and laptops.
  • Ruggedness: Choose a protected portable enclosure if the drive will travel, but maintain another backup for important files.
  • Warranty: Check the current warranty terms for your country and the exact capacity before purchase; terms can differ by region.
  • Platform behavior: Confirm whether your games can run from USB or must be copied to internal or expansion-card storage.

Troubleshooting slow transfers and missing drives

The SSD appears but transfers are much slower than advertised

  • Check the negotiated USB mode in your operating system and move the cable to a confirmed 10Gbps or 20Gbps port.
  • Replace the cable with one rated for the drive’s interface.
  • Close downloads, antivirus scans and other disk-intensive applications.
  • Test a large single game file rather than judging speed from thousands of tiny files.
  • Allow the drive to cool if sustained transfers slow after several minutes; portable SSD controllers can reduce speed when hot.

The PS5 or Xbox does not recognize the drive

  • Connect the SSD directly to the console rather than through a hub.
  • Back up files and let the console format the drive for its extended-storage game format.
  • Confirm that the capacity and USB-speed requirements are within the platform’s limits.
  • Try another approved USB port and cable, then restart the console with the drive connected.

A PS5 game will not launch from the SSD

This is expected behavior for PS5 titles on USB extended storage. Move the game to the console’s internal storage or a compatible internal M.2 drive, then launch it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Xbox Series X|S game will not launch from the SSD

Move the optimized title to the console’s internal storage or an official expansion card. The external SSD remains useful as an archive, even though it cannot provide direct play for that title.

Recommended capacity and drive by scenario

Scenario Recommended choice Reason
One console, small rotating library 2TB Samsung T7 Shield Enough room for large games and updates without paying for a broad archive
Multiple consoles or a long-term archive 4TB Samsung T7 Shield More usable headroom and a rugged, general-purpose design
High-speed PC transfers with a 20Gbps port 2TB or 4TB Crucial X10 Pro Uses the host’s 20Gbps bandwidth for faster sequential transfers
PC plus Xbox archive WD_BLACK P40 20Gbps-class PC transfers and clearly documented Xbox play/archive behavior
PS5 transfers plus PC library SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PS5 Portable 1,000MB/s-class performance and documented PC game-library use

Bottom line by platform

For an SSD that will move between a PC and console, the Samsung T7 Shield in 2TB or 4TB is the least complicated recommendation. It is fast enough for 10Gbps-class ports, rugged enough for travel and available in capacities suited to a growing game library.

Choose the Crucial X10 Pro or WD_BLACK P40 only when a 20Gbps PC port and suitable cable are part of the setup. Their higher advertised rates can reduce large transfers, but they do not change PS5 or Xbox storage rules. On PS5, external SSDs are primarily a fast archive and PS4 play drive; on Xbox Series X|S, they are an archive for optimized games and a play drive for Xbox One titles. Because GTA 6’s final installation size is not confirmed, buy the capacity that leaves room for patches and the rest of your library rather than relying on a rumored number.
