Short answer: If you require a real, dedicated Caps Lock key, choose an external keyboard whose exact regional layout visibly includes one. ChromeOS also lets you create Caps Lock in software: Google supports remapping external keys, and a standard Windows keyboard can use its Windows key as Search or Launcher. Logitech’s K580 ChromeOS Edition is a sensible ChromeOS-oriented candidate, but the manufacturer information does not confirm a physical Caps Lock key on every regional version, so inspect the specific layout before buying.

Start with the distinction that determines your purchase

“A keyboard that works with Chromebook” and “a keyboard with a dedicated Caps Lock key” are not the same requirement. ChromeOS can produce Caps Lock through a shortcut or a remapped key, so almost any compatible external keyboard may be usable. That does not give you a separate, traditional Caps Lock key in the position you expect.

If tactile certainty matters—for example, you switch between ChromeOS and another computer, use a keyboard shortcut without looking, or need Caps Lock for an accessibility workflow—treat the physical key as a hardware requirement. Look at the product photographs and the exact language or regional layout, not just a listing that says “ChromeOS compatible.” If software remapping is acceptable, your options become much broader.

How Caps Lock works on ChromeOS

The built-in toggle

Google’s Chromebook keyboard help documents Alt + Search or Alt + Launcher as the Caps Lock toggle. The Search or Launcher key is the key ChromeOS normally uses for app search and the launcher; on many third-party keyboards it is represented by a Windows logo or a similar operating-system key.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Google also lists Fn + Quick Insert for supported Chromebook keyboard configurations. The exact availability depends on the Chromebook keyboard design and ChromeOS support for that configuration, so it is not a substitute for checking your device when you are troubleshooting a shortcut.

What happens to a Windows keyboard’s Windows key

A conventional Windows keyboard does not become unusable when connected to a Chromebook. ChromeOS treats the Windows key as Search or Launcher. That gives you a practical route to Caps Lock: use the Windows key in the Alt-plus-Search/Launcher shortcut, or remap that key directly in ChromeOS settings.

Google’s own example describes this behavior plainly: “For example, you can make the Search or Launcher key work as a Caps Lock key.” This is why a familiar PC keyboard can be a functional solution even when its legends were designed for Windows.

External-key remapping

ChromeOS exposes remapping for external keyboards. In the current settings flow, open Settings, go to the keyboard section, choose the external keyboard settings, and select Remap keyboard keys. Caps Lock appears in the list of keys that can be assigned. Labels can move as ChromeOS evolves, so use the keyboard search box in Settings if the category is not immediately visible.

Remapping changes what a key sends; it does not add a new physical switch. A keyboard with no Caps Lock key can therefore be configured to provide Caps Lock behavior, but the replacement key will still be in a different position and may have a different legend.

Best choices, depending on what you actually need

Choice When it fits Caps Lock situation Important check
ChromeOS-oriented keyboard with a visibly labeled Caps Lock key You want a conventional, dedicated switch and ChromeOS-specific legends. Meets the hardware requirement when the pictured regional layout shows the key. Confirm the exact language, region and revision; certification alone does not prove the key is present.
Logitech K580 Slim Multi-Device Wireless Keyboard ChromeOS Edition You want a ChromeOS-layout wireless keyboard with two connection methods. The reviewed manufacturer text does not establish a physical Caps Lock key on every regional model. Inspect the product image or obtain seller/manufacturer confirmation before purchase.
Existing standard Windows keyboard You already own one and can accept ChromeOS legends or remapping. Use the Windows key as Search/Launcher, then use the documented shortcut or remap it. Check that the keyboard is recognized and that its connector can be used with your Chromebook.
Wired USB keyboard You prefer a direct connection and do not need wireless pairing. Depends entirely on the physical layout; ChromeOS remapping remains available. Check whether your Chromebook has the matching USB port or requires an adapter.
Compact keyboard without a Caps Lock switch You prioritize a small footprint and are comfortable with software behavior. Assign Caps Lock to a supported key in Remap keyboard keys. Confirm that the chosen replacement key is comfortable and does not remove a shortcut you use.

There is no official Google shortlist of “best” third-party models. Google’s keyboard specification describes compatibility requirements rather than endorsing a particular product. The table therefore separates a verified buying criterion—the visible key and layout—from manufacturer compatibility claims.

What is established about the Logitech K580 ChromeOS Edition

Logitech describes the K580 Slim Multi-Device Wireless Keyboard ChromeOS Edition as designed for ChromeOS and carrying Works With Chromebook certification. The product information lists two connection methods: Bluetooth and an included 2.4 GHz USB receiver. That combination is useful if you want wireless pairing with a Chromebook but also want a receiver option for a device where Bluetooth setup is inconvenient.

The qualification is important: the available manufacturer wording does not explicitly confirm that every regional K580 model has a dedicated physical Caps Lock key. Keyboard layouts can change with language and market, and a catalog description of a ChromeOS layout is not proof of one particular key. Before ordering, enlarge the listing photograph and locate the key normally placed at the left edge of the home row, or ask the seller to identify the exact regional part number and key legends.

Price and availability are market- and date-sensitive and were not stated in the manufacturer material considered here. Treat a current retailer listing as the authority for stock, regional layout and price, while treating Logitech’s product description as the source for the connection and ChromeOS-orientation claims.

How to verify that a keyboard really has a dedicated Caps Lock key

  1. Identify the exact layout. Look for terms such as US, UK, ISO, ANSI, German, French or another language/region designation. Do not assume that a photograph for one market represents every SKU.
  2. Inspect the left side of the home row. A traditional dedicated Caps Lock switch is a separate key between the Tab area and the letter-row modifiers. The legend may say “Caps Lock,” use an abbreviation, or use a lock symbol. If the area is occupied by a function, globe, Search or other key, it is not the traditional key you are seeking.
  3. Check the photograph against the written specification. A title that says “ChromeOS edition” establishes an intended operating-system layout, not necessarily the presence of every conventional PC key.
  4. Verify the connector. For Bluetooth, confirm that your Chromebook can pair with the keyboard and that the keyboard’s pairing process is documented. For a 2.4 GHz receiver or wired USB, check the available port and whether an adapter is needed.
  5. Confirm the return path. If the seller cannot identify the regional layout, choose a listing with a clear image and a return policy that covers a layout mismatch.

Connection choices: Bluetooth, receiver or USB cable

Bluetooth

Bluetooth avoids occupying a USB port and is convenient for a Chromebook used with several devices. Pair it through ChromeOS Bluetooth settings according to the keyboard’s instructions. If the keyboard supports multiple device profiles, confirm which profile is selected before diagnosing a key problem; an unselected profile can make a functioning keyboard appear disconnected.

2.4 GHz USB receiver

A receiver normally provides a simple plug-in connection, but it occupies a USB port and can be easy to misplace. The K580 product information specifically lists an included 2.4 GHz receiver. Check whether your Chromebook has the receiver’s USB connector, especially if it is a compact model with only USB-C ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wired USB

A wired keyboard avoids batteries, pairing and receiver management. Its practical limitation is physical: the Chromebook must have a compatible port, or you must use an appropriate adapter. A USB connection does not guarantee a particular key layout; inspect the hardware in the same way as a wireless model.

Set up Caps Lock behavior after you connect the keyboard

Use the existing Search or Launcher key

  1. Connect the keyboard and wait for ChromeOS to recognize it.
  2. Hold Alt and press the key ChromeOS identifies as Search or Launcher. On many Windows keyboards this is the Windows key.
  3. Test in a text field. The result should be persistent uppercase typing until you use the same toggle again.

If your keyboard has a physical Caps Lock key, test that key first. Some keyboards send a standard Caps Lock signal and need no configuration; others expose a nonstandard key that you may need to assign in Settings.

Remap a key in ChromeOS

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open the keyboard settings category. If necessary, search Settings for “keyboard.”
  3. Open the settings for the connected external keyboard.
  4. Select Remap keyboard keys.
  5. Choose the source key you want to change, then assign Caps Lock as its action.
  6. Close Settings and test the new assignment in a text field and in any application where you normally use uppercase input.

Choose a source key you can locate reliably. Reassigning a key that you depend on for Search, Launcher, screenshots or navigation may solve Caps Lock while creating a different daily annoyance. If the menu does not show an external keyboard, disconnect and reconnect it, then reopen the current keyboard settings page.

ChromeOS compatibility details that matter

Google’s ChromeOS keyboard specification, version 2.0.1 and updated October 1, 2026 UTC, identifies Caps Lock as a modal key: its state changes how subsequent character input is interpreted. The specification also calls for keyboard compliance with HID version 1.11 and describes function-key behavior where function keys are present.

These are general peripheral requirements, not a promise that a particular retail model has a particular key. A Works With Chromebook mark can help establish intended compatibility, but it does not replace checking the physical layout, regional legends, connector and remapping behavior of the exact keyboard you will receive.

Troubleshooting when Caps Lock does not work as expected

The physical key does nothing

  • Open a plain text field and test again to rule out an application-specific shortcut.
  • Confirm that the keyboard is connected to the intended device profile or receiver.
  • Open external keyboard settings and see whether the key can be assigned through Remap keyboard keys.
  • Try the keyboard on another compatible device only as a diagnostic step; a result there does not prove that the Chromebook has identical mappings.

The shortcut produces Search instead of Caps Lock

This usually means the modifier or Search/Launcher key was not recognized as expected. Check which key ChromeOS assigns to Search or Launcher, then use that key with Alt. On a Windows keyboard, start with the Windows key rather than assuming the printed legend is interpreted as a Chromebook key.

A remapped key conflicts with another action

Return to the external keyboard’s remapping page and restore the original assignment, then select a less-used source key. The remapping feature changes the selected key globally within ChromeOS, so a convenient replacement can affect shortcuts outside the text editor where you first tested it.

The keyboard layout does not match the Chromebook

Check the regional model and the legends on the physical unit. A keyboard can connect correctly while placing symbols, modifiers or Caps Lock in unexpected positions. If the listing photograph and the delivered keyboard differ, document the mismatch and use the seller’s exchange or return process rather than trying to compensate for an unsuitable hardware layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The keyboard is not detected

For wireless models, verify power, pairing mode and the selected Bluetooth or receiver connection. For wired models, check the port and any adapter. Once the device appears in ChromeOS keyboard settings, test the key before changing mappings; remapping cannot repair a missing physical connection.

A practical decision rule

Buy by requirement, in this order:

  1. Need a real key? Reject any listing whose exact regional photograph does not show a separate Caps Lock switch.
  2. Software behavior is enough? Keep your existing Windows keyboard or select a compact model, then use ChromeOS’s documented shortcut or remapping.
  3. Need wireless flexibility? Prefer the connection method your Chromebook supports without an inconvenient adapter; the K580 offers Bluetooth and a 2.4 GHz receiver according to Logitech.
  4. Need familiar legends? Select a layout matching your typing language, even if that means choosing a non-ChromeOS-branded keyboard and adapting the Windows key to Search or Launcher.
  5. Need certainty before purchase? Get written confirmation of the regional key layout and retain a return option.

The most defensible named candidate in the available product information is the Logitech K580 ChromeOS Edition, but only as a ChromeOS-oriented wireless option—not as a guaranteed physical-Caps-Lock recommendation. For the strict hardware requirement, the deciding evidence is the exact keyboard in the exact regional layout.
