For most people, the Verbatim 43888 is the best external Blu-ray drive for a PlayStation-disc archiving workstation. It combines USB-C, UHD Blu-ray playback, 6x BD-R/BD-R DL writing, 4x BDXL writing, support for 100GB BDXL media and M-DISC compatibility in a portable enclosure. Choose the ASUS BW-16D1X-U instead when you want a faster, desktop-sized writer with up to 16x BD-R writing and BDXL support up to 128GB. The compact LG BP60NB10 is a simpler USB 2.0 option with BDXL support up to 100GB.
A drive specification is not a promise that a computer can decrypt or dump a proprietary PS4 or PS5 game disc. Sony’s published material separates supported console playback media from copy-protection technology, and the official sources do not document an authorized PC workflow for decrypting PlayStation game discs. Treat the hardware recommendations below as capable optical readers and writers, then verify your operating system, software, firmware and legal rights before attempting any archive.
The short answer: which drive should you buy?
Start with the type of media you need to read or write, not with the word “Blu-ray” on the box. A standard Blu-ray drive may handle 25GB and 50GB discs yet lack the BDXL capability needed for 66GB, 100GB or 128GB media. UHD Blu-ray playback is another feature again: it concerns compatible movie-disc playback and does not, by itself, establish that a drive can decrypt a PlayStation game.

What “archiving a PlayStation disc” actually involves
There are three separate tasks that are often conflated:
- Reading the optical medium: the drive’s laser, firmware and media support must recognize the disc and its capacity.
- Creating a preservation copy: software must be able to read the sectors you are entitled to copy, represent them accurately and verify the result.
- Using the copy: a console or emulator may require signed data, encryption keys, a particular image format or other checks that an ordinary optical drive cannot provide.
An external drive can solve the first task without solving the other two. A USB connection also does not change the security model: it merely transports data between the drive and host computer.
PS4 and PS5 disc support: playback is not the same as PC access
Sony’s PS5 manual lists PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray, compatible PS4 Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE among supported media for the console’s optical drive. The same manual states that PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and original PlayStation-format software cannot be played from disc on PS5. That is a statement about what the PS5 console accepts for playback, not a guarantee about what a Windows, macOS or Linux computer can image.

PlayStation support also lists BD-R/RE XL as unsupported for PS4 and PS5 media playback. Consequently, a BDXL-capable external drive remains useful for computer-side data work and for writing archival media, but you should not expect a PS4 or PS5 to boot a game or play content merely because the data fits on a 66GB, 100GB or 128GB XL disc.
Why UHD capability can be misleading
UHD Blu-ray support on a product page normally describes playback of Ultra HD movie discs. It indicates a compatible optical pickup and firmware path for that class of disc; it does not certify support for PlayStation’s game-disc format, keys or signing checks. The Verbatim 43888’s UHD playback specification is therefore a useful bonus for a mixed movie-and-data workstation, not evidence of a console-game archive workflow.
Drive profiles in detail
Verbatim 43888: the portable all-rounder
The 43888 is the most balanced choice when one drive must travel between computers. Its USB-C connection avoids a legacy Type-A-only design, while the manufacturer lists UHD Blu-ray playback for users who also handle movie media. For writing, it is specified at up to 6x for BD-R and BD-R DL and up to 4x for BDXL. It supports BDXL capacity up to 100GB and is identified as M-DISC compliant.

Those figures matter for an archive because a 100GB BDXL disc can hold substantially more than a single-layer 25GB BD-R, reducing the number of pieces in a set. The trade-off is speed: a 4x BDXL operation is slower than the ASUS desktop’s advertised 16x BD-R maximum, and actual throughput depends on the disc’s certified speed, the host computer, USB negotiation and the drive’s thermal behavior. For a bus-powered portable unit, use a short, good-quality USB-C cable and connect directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
ASUS BW-16D1X-U: the fast desktop writer
The BW-16D1X-U is the choice for a workstation that values writing speed over small size. Its USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A interface pairs with a published maximum of 16x for BD-R writing. ASUS also specifies BDXL support up to 128GB, covering the largest capacity class named in this comparison.
The 16x number applies to BD-R under the manufacturer’s stated conditions; it is not a promise that every 25GB, 50GB or XL disc will write at that rate. Media certification, the selected write strategy and sustained cooling can all lower the achieved speed. Because it is a desktop enclosure, plan a permanent location, leave ventilation around it and check the regional package for its power adapter and cable before purchase.
LG BP60NB10: compact USB 2.0 simplicity
The BP60NB10 suits a reader who wants a small external optical drive and does not expect to write large batches every day. LG’s specification sheet lists a 6x BD-ROM transfer rate and BDXL support up to 100GB. That makes it relevant to reading XL media even though its USB 2.0 connection is older than the USB-C and USB 3.2 interfaces on the other two drives.
USB 2.0 can become the bottleneck when you move multi-gigabyte images. It is still adequate for occasional access, cataloging, or a desk where portability and a simpler connection matter more than the shortest transfer time. Verify whether your computer provides enough bus power for the exact enclosure and cable combination, and avoid assuming that a 6x BD-ROM transfer specification equals a 6x sustained image-creation rate.

If your discs are ordinary 25GB or 50GB Blu-ray
All three drives are plausible hardware candidates because each is a Blu-ray-class external drive, but the deciding factors become interface, enclosure size and writing speed. Select the Verbatim for USB-C portability, the ASUS for a fixed workstation and faster BD-R writing, or the LG when a compact USB 2.0 unit is sufficient.

If you need 66GB, 100GB or 128GB BDXL
Buy a drive whose published BDXL limit covers the media you intend to use. The Verbatim is specified for 100GB BDXL, the LG for up to 100GB, and the ASUS for up to 128GB. A drive that says only “Blu-ray” without an explicit BDXL capacity should not be assumed to recognize those discs.
If you need to write many archive discs
The ASUS’s up-to-16x BD-R specification makes it the throughput-oriented option. For BDXL specifically, the Verbatim’s published maximum is 4x; ASUS’s published specifications do not state an ASUS BDXL write speed, so do not infer one from its 16x BD-R figure. The LG’s USB 2.0 link favors occasional jobs rather than a large queue.
If you need movie playback as well
The Verbatim explicitly lists UHD Blu-ray playback. That makes it the clearest mixed-use choice in this group. Playback software, regional settings, display protection and operating-system support remain separate requirements; a hardware label alone does not guarantee that every computer can play UHD movies.
Understanding BDXL, UHD and M-DISC
BDXL capacity classes
BDXL is a higher-capacity Blu-ray family. In practical buying terms, the relevant classes here are 66GB, 100GB and 128GB. Capacity is the amount of raw optical storage marketed for the disc; usable space for an image or file set is lower after filesystem and formatting overhead. A 100GB-rated disc is not interchangeable with a drive whose specification stops at 50GB.
UHD Blu-ray
UHD Blu-ray is an optical format associated with Ultra HD movie content. A drive may support UHD playback while offering a different list of writable formats. Check read, write and playback lines separately instead of treating “UHD” as a universal compatibility badge.
M-DISC
M-DISC is an archival-media designation. The Verbatim 43888 is listed as M-DISC compliant, which means the drive is specified to work with that media type. Longevity still depends on media authenticity, storage conditions, labeling, handling and whether you maintain additional copies; the designation is not a substitute for verification and redundancy.

A careful, lawful archiving workflow
The following process keeps hardware selection, data integrity and rights questions separate. It does not provide instructions for bypassing encryption or console security.
- Document the collection. Record the game title, platform, region, disc identifier, edition, ownership status and physical condition. Photograph labels and write down whether a set contains multiple discs.
- Match the drive to the medium. Confirm that the drive explicitly supports the disc’s class: standard BD, dual-layer BD-R/RE or the BDXL capacity you have. For a 100GB disc, for example, a specification limited to 50GB is insufficient.
- Connect directly to the host. Use the supplied cable or a certified replacement, connect to a full-speed USB port, and avoid an unpowered hub during long reads or writes. On a desktop drive, follow the regional power-adapter instructions.
- Update only through official support channels. Check the drive manufacturer’s current firmware and operating-system compatibility notes. Do not install modified firmware simply because a forum claims it enables game-disc access; that can damage the drive and may violate law or license terms.
- Identify the disc without altering it. Let the operating system report the optical format and nominal capacity. If the disc is not recognized, stop and troubleshoot the connection, media condition and drive support before attempting repeated reads.
- Use authorized imaging software. If your rights and the applicable law permit a preservation copy, use software that can make a sector-accurate image of the readable data and retain the original filesystem metadata. The official material cited for this topic does not document a general authorized PC method for decrypting proprietary PlayStation game discs.
- Verify the result. Generate a cryptographic checksum for each image or file set, compare it after the first copy, and record the drive model, firmware version, date, disc identifier and any unreadable sectors. A successful eject is not proof of a complete image.
- Keep independent copies. Store at least one copy on a different medium and in a different location from the original. Keep the original disc in a cool, dry, stable environment, upright or flat according to the media maker’s guidance, and avoid adhesive labels that can unbalance a disc.
- Test restores periodically. Read a sample of archives on a separate computer, compare checksums and document any media that has become unreadable. A preservation plan is only useful if the copy can still be read.
Why a generic USB drive is not a guaranteed PlayStation dumper
Sony describes AACS as “a copyright-protection technology” with a key set on both the disc and the playback device. That explanation illustrates why a drive’s ability to spin, read sectors or write BDXL does not automatically confer the keys, authentication or software behavior required for protected content.
The official sources available for this topic do not document an authorized PC workflow for decrypting proprietary PS4 or PS5 game discs. Accordingly, an article that promises “plug in any USB Blu-ray drive and dump every game” would overstate what the specifications prove. Firmware, operating-system drivers, filesystem handling, encryption, signing and regional restrictions can each be a separate failure point.
Stay within the laws and licenses that apply where you live. Do not defeat access controls, distribute copyrighted images or use an archive to bypass a console’s security. If your goal is legitimate preservation, retain proof of ownership, limit access to your own copies and consult a qualified legal source about local exceptions rather than relying on a drive advertisement.
Media and accessories to plan for
- BD-R and BD-R DL: write-once media in the capacities your drive and software support. Dual-layer discs reduce the number of pieces for larger sets.
- BD-RE: rewritable media useful for temporary transfers, but not a replacement for write-once archival copies when long-term retention is the priority.
- BDXL: choose 66GB, 100GB or 128GB media only after checking the drive’s stated limit. The ASUS listing reaches 128GB; the Verbatim and LG listings reach 100GB.
- M-DISC: the Verbatim is listed as compliant. Use genuine, compatible media and still maintain duplicate copies.
- Cables and power: match USB-C or USB 3.2 Type-A to the host, avoid damaged cables and provide stable power for long reads and writes. A passive adapter can reduce convenience or reliability if it does not preserve the required USB mode.
- Storage cases: protect discs from dust, fingerprints, heat, moisture and flexing. Keep a written inventory outside the optical media.
Performance expectations and setup tips
Advertised “6x,” “16x” and transfer-rate figures are maxima under specified conditions. Optical drives commonly vary their speed during a job to manage errors and heat, and a disc may be certified for a lower rate than the drive’s maximum. Image creation also includes seeking, filesystem processing and verification, so elapsed time will exceed a simple capacity-divided-by-speed calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a portable drive, place the enclosure on a rigid surface, keep ventilation openings clear and do not move it while the disc is spinning. For the desktop ASUS, leave room around the enclosure and connect it to a stable USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port. On a USB 2.0 host, even a faster drive will be limited by the older bus. Close applications that continuously scan removable media, and let a long read finish before disconnecting the cable.

Troubleshooting common failures
The computer does not see the drive
- Reconnect the cable directly to another USB port and check whether the host supplies power.
- Try the manufacturer-supplied cable or a known-good cable of the correct type.
- On the desktop model, verify the power adapter and switch.
- Check the operating system’s device list and install only official drivers or firmware updates.
The drive sees DVDs but not a BDXL disc
Confirm that BDXL is explicitly listed for the model and that the disc capacity is within its limit. A 128GB disc requires a drive whose specification reaches 128GB; a 100GB-rated unit is not enough. Inspect the disc for fingerprints or scratches, try a second known-compatible disc and update official firmware if the manufacturer lists a fix.
A read stops or reports errors
Clean the disc with a soft, straight wipe from the center outward, not a circular scrub. Repeat the read once, record the sector or file that fails and compare with another drive if available. Do not treat a partial image as complete; preserve the error log with your inventory.
A write finishes but verification fails
Use media from a reputable manufacturer, lower the write speed from the maximum, and ensure the computer does not sleep during the job. Re-read the written disc and compare checksums. If failures repeat across discs, test another USB port, cable, firmware version or drive rather than discarding the only source.
Recommended Free Tools
The archive works on the computer but not on a PS4 or PS5
That result is expected for many protected or unsupported formats. Console playback rules are separate from PC readability, and PlayStation support lists BD-R/RE XL as unsupported for PS4 and PS5 media playback. A computer-readable image is not automatically a bootable replacement disc.
Buying checklist
- Does the listing name the exact medium: BD-R, BD-R DL, BDXL and, if needed, UHD Blu-ray?
- Does its BDXL capacity cover 66GB, 100GB or 128GB discs in your collection?
- Is the interface appropriate for your computer: USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A or USB 2.0?
- Will a portable bus-powered enclosure fit your travel needs, or is a desktop unit preferable for sustained work?
- Are the published speeds for the medium you will actually write? Do not transfer a BD-R speed claim to BDXL.
- Does the package include the required cable and, for a desktop enclosure, the correct power adapter?
- Have you confirmed that your intended software and legal use permit the archive? Hardware specifications cannot answer that question.
Bottom line
Choose the Verbatim 43888 for the best balance of USB-C portability, 100GB BDXL, UHD playback, M-DISC support and moderate write speeds. Choose the ASUS BW-16D1X-U for a permanent workstation where up to 16x BD-R writing and 128GB BDXL support justify a larger enclosure. Choose the LG BP60NB10 when compact size and basic BDXL reading matter more than USB 2.0 throughput. Whichever you buy, regard it as optical hardware—not a guaranteed PlayStation decryption solution—and build your archive around verification, redundant storage and lawful use.
