The best exploration games to play on iPhone depend on what you mean by exploration. Apple’s current iPhone editorial collection, The Best Games for Explorers, mixes large fantasy RPGs, social worlds, compact adventures, farming and survival games, and location-based play. It is a useful discovery list, not a tested ranking.
For a large fantasy world, start by investigating Genshin Impact or Wuthering Waves. For shared-world discovery, look at Sky: Children of the Light. For a smaller authored adventure, Afterplace is the clearest fit. Stardew Valley, Crashlands, and Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition make exploration part of a broader routine. If you want a current island-hopping action RPG with an explicitly stated 20-plus-hour main story, Oceanhorn 3: Legend of the Shadow Sea is available on iPhone through Apple Arcade.
What Apple’s explorer collection does—and does not—tell you
Apple currently groups Pokémon GO, AFK Journey, Wuthering Waves, Genshin Impact, Sky: Children of the Light, Afterplace, Stardew Valley, Crashlands, Botworld Adventure, and Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition under “The Best Games for Explorers” in the U.S. iPhone App Store. Apple presents this as editorial curation. The collection is not a numerical ranking, comparative performance test, or guarantee that every game suits every player.
The collection page also does not establish a common set of facts for all ten games. It does not, by itself, provide comparable current prices, download sizes, supported iOS versions, offline status, multiplayer requirements, language lists, or monetization terms. Those details can vary by country and change over time, so use each game’s current regional App Store listing before installing.

Choose by the kind of discovery you want
| Game | Best match | How exploration is framed | Access information established by the collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genshin Impact | Large fantasy-world RPG | Apple places it among its explorer picks; verify the current listing for the exact world, progression, online, and purchase details. | Individual price, requirements, file size, and offline status are not stated by the collection. |
| Wuthering Waves | Large fantasy-world RPG | Another Apple explorer pick for readers seeking a broad role-playing setting; confirm current mechanics on its own listing. | Comparable access and device details are not stated by the collection. |
| Sky: Children of the Light | Shared-world, social discovery | Apple’s collection subtitle says “Play Together with Compassion.” Treat that as promotional copy, then check the current listing for actual multiplayer requirements. | Current price, account, connection, and controller requirements are not established by the collection. |
| Afterplace | Compact, authored adventure | The collection describes it with “Explore a world of secrets,” making it the most direct fit for a smaller, story-led discovery experience. | Verify current purchase and device information in your regional listing. |
| Stardew Valley | Slow, open-ended routine | Apple calls it a farm RPG. Exploration is part of a wider farming and simulation loop rather than the sole activity. | Current listing details are not supplied by the collection. |
| Crashlands | Survival, crafting, and exploration | Use it when you want discovery tied to resource gathering and survival systems; confirm the current store description for the exact feature set. | Price and technical requirements are not stated by the collection. |
| Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition | Survival exploration | Apple includes it as an explorer title; check the current listing before relying on specific survival systems or purchase terms. | Comparable requirements and offline information are not established by the collection. |
| Pokémon GO | Location-based discovery | Its inclusion signals a real-world exploration angle, but the collection alone does not document current location, connection, or account requirements. | Check the live regional listing. |
| AFK Journey | Exploration within a role-playing game | It appears in Apple’s explorer grouping; use its current listing to decide whether its particular structure fits your preferred pace. | Collection-level access details are not stated. |

Large fantasy worlds: Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves
Choose this branch if your priority is scale: you want a setting that feels broad, with exploration serving as a major reason to keep playing rather than a short interlude between levels. Apple’s explorer collection identifies Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves as candidates for that interest.
Do not infer a specific business model, download size, iOS requirement, offline mode, or controller support from their appearance in the editorial collection. Open each game’s current App Store page in your region and inspect the compatibility, in-app purchase, language, and connection information before downloading. If your phone has limited storage or an older iOS version, those checks matter more than the editorial label.
Shared-world discovery: Sky: Children of the Light
Sky: Children of the Light is the natural pick from Apple’s list when the appeal of exploration is encountering other people in the same world. Apple’s subtitle, “Play Together with Compassion,” communicates the intended social tone, but it is marketing language rather than an independent assessment of how the game plays.

- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
A smaller authored world: Afterplace
If a huge online RPG sounds like too much commitment, Afterplace is the most focused option in the collection. Apple’s subtitle is “Explore a world of secrets,” which directly matches a player who wants a compact adventure built around looking behind paths, finding hidden areas, and following a designed journey.
Because the collection does not provide a standardized technical or pricing profile, check the individual listing for the current purchase model, supported iOS version, download size, languages, and controller information. This is especially useful if you want a one-time purchase or a game that can be played without a large initial download; neither assumption is supported by the collection alone.
Exploration as a daily routine: Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley belongs on an exploration list for a different reason. Apple labels it a farm RPG, so discovery sits inside a repeating routine of farming and simulation rather than replacing those activities. It suits players who enjoy gradually learning a place while managing a broader set of responsibilities.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That distinction helps set expectations: select it when you want exploration to coexist with a slower, open-ended structure. If you want an adventure that constantly pushes you toward new locations, use the large-world or authored-adventure branches instead. Confirm the current App Store listing for technical details and purchase terms.

Survival and crafting: Crashlands and Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition
Crashlands
Apple includes Crashlands in its explorer collection and identifies survival, crafting, and exploration as the relevant combination. This is a good direction when discovering a place is inseparable from collecting resources and building the means to continue.
Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition
Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition is the other survival-oriented pick. Its inclusion tells you the intended broad category, but not the exact current systems, difficulty, connection behavior, or price. Read the live listing before treating it as an offline game, assuming a particular purchase model, or checking it against a specific iPhone.
For both titles, consider whether you enjoy pressure and resource management as much as sightseeing. If you mainly want story and secrets without survival obligations, Afterplace or an authored action adventure may be a better fit.
Other Apple explorer picks: Pokémon GO, AFK Journey, and Botworld Adventure
Pokémon GO
Pokémon GO represents exploration tied to the physical world. The Apple grouping is enough to put it on your shortlist if walking to real locations is part of the appeal. It is not enough to establish current location permissions, connection requirements, account rules, or regional availability, so check its App Store listing and the permissions shown during setup.

AFK Journey
AFK Journey appears in the same editorial collection, but Apple’s collection page does not give a detailed explanation of its exploration structure. Treat it as a candidate to investigate rather than a guaranteed match for any particular play style. The individual listing is the authority for current systems and access conditions.
Botworld Adventure
Botworld Adventure is likewise included without a comparable specification sheet. If its premise interests you, check the listing for the exact progression, connection, device, and purchase information before deciding. This avoids assuming that every game in an “explorer” collection offers the same kind of open-world wandering.

The official game page states: “Expect over 20 hours of main storyline rich with lore and intrigue, plus plenty of optional side adventures!” That is the developer’s stated scope, not an independently tested completion-time estimate. Your actual duration will depend on how much optional content you pursue and how quickly you solve encounters.
Heikki Repo, creator of the Oceanhorn series and creative director at Cornfox & Brothers, said: “We’re excited for both longtime fans and new adventurers to explore a rich new world filled with compelling characters and an unforgettable story.” The statement appears in Apple’s February 10, 2026 Newsroom release.
Apple Arcade access, price, and family eligibility
Oceanhorn 3 requires access through Apple Arcade rather than being a separately established App Store purchase in the information available here. Apple’s February 10, 2026 UK Newsroom release listed Apple Arcade at £6.99 per month in the United Kingdom and included a one-month trial for that market at publication. It said one subscription gives a family of up to six access to the catalog.
Those are UK-specific terms reported at that date, not a universal price. Apple says availability varies according to device, software compatibility, and region. Check the subscription screen associated with your Apple Account for current local pricing, trial eligibility, and sharing rules before subscribing. Apple reported a catalog of more than 200 games in 2026, but the catalog and terms can change.
How to check any iPhone exploration game before downloading
- Open the game’s regional App Store page. Do not rely only on Apple’s editorial collection card.
- Confirm the access model. Look for a one-time purchase, free download with in-app purchases, or Apple Arcade requirement.
- Read compatibility information. Check the supported iOS version and whether your exact iPhone model is listed.
- Check storage before tapping Get. Use the listed app size as a minimum planning figure; updates and in-game downloads may require additional space.
- Verify connection and account needs. Look for online, login, location, or multiplayer requirements, especially for social and location-based games.
- Review languages and input support. Confirm that the interface and subtitles you need are offered, and look for controller support if touch controls are not your preference.
- Read the latest version notes. Games change through updates, so older reviews may describe a different price, requirement, or feature set.
Should you use a controller?
A wireless iPhone controller can make movement and combat more comfortable, particularly in action-heavy games, but it is optional and not universally supported. Apple states that controller use works only with select games and that regional availability varies. Do not assume a particular controller will work with every title in this list.
Check the individual game listing or the developer’s current support information for controller compatibility, then confirm that your iPhone and operating-system version support the controller’s connection method. If a game does not list controller support, plan to use touch controls rather than buying an accessory on the assumption that it will work.
A practical decision path
- Want the biggest fantasy setting? Compare the current listings for Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves.
- Want to discover with other players? Start with Sky: Children of the Light, then verify its live multiplayer requirements.
- Want a compact world built around secrets? Investigate Afterplace.
- Want discovery alongside a relaxing routine? Choose Stardew Valley if farming and simulation are part of the appeal.
- Want survival and crafting to shape your route? Compare Crashlands and Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition.
- Want real-world walking? Examine Pokémon GO and its current permissions and connection requirements.
- Want a current island adventure with explicit traversal upgrades? Consider Oceanhorn 3 through Apple Arcade, subject to your region, device, and subscription terms.
What to remember before choosing
“Best exploration games to play on iPhone” is not one fixed ranking because the list covers fundamentally different experiences. Apple’s collection is a timely starting point, while each game’s own regional listing supplies the practical facts that determine whether it will run on your phone and fit your budget. Match the game’s structure to the kind of discovery you actually want, and treat prices, requirements, online status, subscription terms, and controller compatibility as details to verify immediately before installation.
