The best EXILED plugin is the one that solves your server’s specific problem and is maintained for your exact SCP: Secret Laboratory and EXILED versions. There is no official, permanent ranking of third-party plugins. For a dependable setup, start with moderation and logging, add quality-of-life features, then introduce custom roles, economy, or integrations one at a time. Check compatibility, permissions, configuration quality, maintenance activity, and rollback options before installing any plugin on a live server.

What EXILED is—and what an EXILED plugin does

EXILED is a high-level plugin framework for SCP: Secret Laboratory servers. Its event system lets developers react to game events, manipulate game behavior, and add functions that are not present in the stock server. EXILED loads through Northwood’s Plugin API while keeping framework code outside the server assembly. That separation is intended to reduce the effect of small game updates, although it does not make every plugin automatically compatible with every release.

An EXILED plugin is normally a separate .dll assembly. EXILED supplies the loading and event infrastructure; the individual plugin supplies the feature, its commands, permissions, configuration, and data handling. Installing EXILED alone therefore does not add custom roles, moderation commands, economies, or Discord features. Those capabilities come from separate plugin files, each with its own author and support lifecycle.

How to decide which plugins are “best”

Popularity is a weak production criterion. A plugin used by many servers can still be unsuitable for your game version, permission model, or performance budget. Evaluate every candidate against these gates before downloading it.

#1 Best Overall

Criterion What to verify Why it matters
Compatibility Supported SCP:SL version, required EXILED build, release date, dependency list, and upgrade notes. A plugin can fail to load, throw errors, or subtly break rounds when its API assumptions are outdated.
Purpose fit The exact problem it solves, commands it adds, events it changes, and features that can be disabled. Unneeded hooks and commands increase complexity without improving your server.
Operational safety Permission defaults, configuration validation, logging, data storage, and behavior when a value is missing. Bad defaults can grant staff powers, disrupt rounds, or expose administrative actions to players.
Maintenance Recent releases, issue activity, documentation, and evidence that the author responds to breakage reports. EXILED and SCP:SL updates can require plugin changes; abandoned code becomes a recurring outage risk.
Lifecycle support Whether the plugin documents reload behavior, cache rebuilding, and what must happen on shutdown. Some plugins cannot safely be updated while the server is running, even though EXILED supports a reload command.
Rollback path A known-good DLL, a copy of its YAML configuration, and a way to disable it without deleting evidence. Fast rollback limits downtime when a new release causes errors or gameplay conflicts.

Best plugin categories by server goal

The following shortlist is organized by outcome rather than by an unreliable universal ranking. The official EXILED project does not publish a ranked catalog of third-party plugins, so each candidate must be checked on its own author-controlled release page or community listing.

Administration and moderation

Administration plugins are the first priority for a public server. Look for tools that make staff work auditable instead of simply adding more commands. Useful capabilities include permission-aware moderation commands, player reports, punishment workflows, staff-only menus, warning history, and action logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Require explicit permissions for every punitive command; never assume that being in a staff role is sufficient.
  • Prefer plugins that record who issued an action, which player was affected, the reason, and the time.
  • Check whether bans, kicks, mutes, or warnings survive a restart and whether the plugin explains its storage format.
  • Verify that a failed command returns an error to the staff member rather than silently doing nothing.

Keep moderation features separate from experimental gameplay code when possible. If a custom event plugin fails, staff should still be able to investigate and stabilize the server.

Quality-of-life features

Quality-of-life plugins improve clarity and round flow without fundamentally replacing the game’s rules. Examples include clearer information displays, configurable round announcements, smoother spectator handling, queue improvements, and conveniences that reduce repetitive staff work.

These plugins are often low risk, but “small” features can still hook many events. Check whether a plugin updates text or UI every frame, broadcasts to all players repeatedly, or performs network requests during a round. Favor configurable intervals, opt-in messages, and controls that let you disable noisy features without removing the DLL.

Custom roles and alternate gamemodes

Choose custom-role or gamemode plugins when your community wants rules that the standard game does not provide. A well-designed role plugin should document spawn conditions, inventory or ability changes, win conditions, and interactions with standard SCP: Secret Laboratory roles.

Before enabling one, test edge cases in a private or password-protected server:

  • What happens if the round ends while the custom role is alive?
  • Can the role be spawned repeatedly through reconnects, respawns, or round restarts?
  • Do ordinary spectators, team balancing, and escape conditions still work?
  • Are abilities restricted by permissions or configuration, and are cooldowns enforced server-side?

Gamemode plugins usually touch more events than quality-of-life plugins and therefore have a higher conflict surface. Install one major rules-changing plugin at a time and test it against your existing role, respawn, and round-control plugins.

Progression and economy

Persistent rewards, currencies, levels, and unlocks can improve retention when the community wants long-term goals. They also introduce data-management responsibilities that a temporary round modifier does not.

  • Identify where player data is stored and whether the plugin supports backups or exports.
  • Determine how it handles a changed player identifier, a deleted record, or a corrupted file.
  • Check whether rewards can be earned through idling, reconnecting, or other unintended loops.
  • Set caps and rate limits before opening the feature to players.

Do not combine multiple plugins that each award currency for the same event until you have mapped their triggers. Duplicate hooks can inflate balances and make a rollback difficult.

Communications and external integrations

Discord notifications, webhooks, status feeds, and external management systems are useful for staff visibility. Treat every outbound integration as a security boundary. Confirm what data leaves the server, whether credentials are stored in plain text, and whether a timeout blocks the game thread.

Use a dedicated webhook or service credential with the smallest possible scope. Rotate it if it appears in logs or a configuration backup. Prefer asynchronous delivery and a local queue so a remote outage does not stall round events.

Logging, diagnostics, and metrics

Diagnostic plugins are valuable when several gameplay plugins interact. Look for structured logs, event timing, exception details, and a way to identify the plugin that produced a message. Metrics can reveal rising event latency or memory use before players notice a failure.

Enable detailed logging during a controlled test, then reduce verbosity for normal operation. Retain enough history to correlate a problem with a DLL or configuration change, but set rotation limits so logs do not fill the server disk.

A practical plugin stack for different servers

Small private or friends-only server

Start with only the features your group will use: a modest quality-of-life plugin and, if needed, a basic staff tool. Avoid persistent economy and external integrations until the core round flow is stable. Fewer assemblies make it easier to identify a conflict.

Rank #4
SCP Containment Breach Game Bloody Distressed Logo

Public community server

Prioritize permission-aware moderation, reports or staff workflow, and audit logging. Add quality-of-life changes after staff can handle incidents. Introduce custom roles or events in a staging environment, then publish clear rules so players understand what differs from the standard game.

Event or role-play server

Use a custom gamemode or role system as the centerpiece, supported by diagnostics and a controlled announcement tool. Keep moderation commands independent of the event logic, and prepare a configuration profile that can disable the event features for ordinary rounds.

Multi-server network

Standardize EXILED and SCP:SL versions across instances, but keep each server’s plugin set explicit. Shared configuration templates should not overwrite per-port settings or credentials. Central integrations and metrics need rate limits and clear ownership so one server cannot flood a common endpoint.

Compatibility checks before installation

Do these checks for every DLL, even when another administrator says it works elsewhere:

  1. Record the server’s intended SCP:SL version and the installed EXILED build.
  2. Read the plugin release notes for required EXILED versions, dependencies, breaking changes, and known conflicts.
  3. Confirm that the download is an official release from a source controlled by the plugin author. Do not use a renamed DLL from an unverified mirror.
  4. Inspect the documented permissions, commands, configuration keys, data files, and default behavior.
  5. Check the latest issue and release activity. A plugin with no recent maintenance may still work, but you should treat it as an explicit compatibility risk.
  6. Copy the current plugin directory and EXILED configuration before making changes.

Install EXILED and add a plugin

The official EXILED instructions provide installer and manual methods for both Windows and Linux. Follow the method appropriate to the account that runs your server; installing under one user and running the server under another can place files in different configuration directories.

Windows

  1. Stop the SCP: Secret Laboratory server and back up its current files.
  2. Install EXILED using the official Windows installer or the documented manual procedure.
  3. Download the plugin’s release .dll from the author-controlled source.
  4. Place the DLL in the EXILED Plugins directory under the server user’s roaming AppData EXILED path, commonly represented as %AppData%EXILEDPlugins.
  5. Start the server and watch the console for EXILED and plugin load messages.
  6. Open the generated EXILED per-server-port YAML configuration file, review every default, and set permissions and feature flags before allowing players to join.

Linux

  1. Stop the server and make a backup of the existing EXILED directory and configuration.
  2. Install EXILED with its documented Linux installer or manual process while logged in as the account that runs the server.
  3. Download the release .dll and copy it to ~/.config/EXILED/Plugins.
  4. Start the server from the same user account so the expected home and configuration paths are used.
  5. Check startup output for dependency, permission, or assembly-load errors.
  6. Edit the generated per-server-port YAML file, then run a private test round before opening the server publicly.

EXILED plugins are DLL files, not standalone executables. Do not launch a DLL directly, rename it to an executable, or place it in an arbitrary game-data folder; EXILED will not discover it there.

Configure, test, and promote a plugin safely

  1. Start with one change. Add a single DLL or a single configuration feature so a new symptom has a clear cause.
  2. Read the generated YAML. EXILED normally creates plugin configuration in a per-server-port YAML file. Record the file before editing and preserve comments or documented key names.
  3. Set permissions first. Test commands with an administrator account and a normal player account. Confirm that denied users receive no partial effect.
  4. Exercise failure paths. Test reconnects, round restarts, spectator transitions, invalid command arguments, and a temporary loss of any external service.
  5. Watch logs and resource use. Look for repeated exceptions, event-hook errors, long pauses, abnormal memory growth, and message floods.
  6. Run a canary period. Keep the feature limited to a test server or scheduled event until several complete rounds finish without unexplained behavior.
  7. Promote with a rollback copy. Save the exact DLL and YAML version that passed testing before replacing a production copy.

Reloading plugins versus restarting the server

EXILED provides a reload plugins command that administrators can run from Remote Admin or the Server Console. It can load newly added plugins without a full process restart. That capability is convenient, but it is not a universal guarantee of safe hot-swapping.

Use reload only when the plugin author documents dynamic-update support and you have tested it. A plugin may keep event subscriptions, timers, file handles, cached state, or external connections that are not released correctly. EXILED warns that dynamic updating depends on correct plugin setup and that problems remain the responsibility of the plugin developer and host.

For an undocumented plugin, schedule a maintenance restart instead. A restart gives the process a clean initialization path and makes it easier to verify that the intended DLL set and configuration were loaded.

Common failures and recovery steps

The plugin does not appear to load

  • Confirm the DLL is in the correct Windows roaming AppData or Linux ~/.config/EXILED/Plugins directory.
  • Check that the server is running under the same user whose EXILED directory you inspected.
  • Verify the file is a release build for the installed SCP:SL and EXILED versions.
  • Read the first load error in the console; a missing dependency can produce follow-on errors that obscure the original cause.

The server starts, but commands are unavailable

  • Inspect the plugin’s permission nodes and assign them to the intended staff role.
  • Check command spelling and aliases in the plugin documentation.
  • Reload or restart after changing permissions if the plugin reads them only during initialization.

Rounds behave incorrectly after adding a plugin

  • Disable the newest plugin by moving its DLL out of the Plugins directory while the server is stopped.
  • Restore the previous YAML configuration and restart.
  • Reproduce the problem with only that plugin enabled, then report the complete version, configuration, log error, and reproduction steps to its author.

Reload causes duplicate messages or actions

Stop using dynamic reload for that plugin. Duplicate event handlers, timers, or webhooks indicate that its unload path is not safe; use a full restart and report the behavior to the author.

Operational checklist

  • Keep a versioned backup of every production DLL and its per-port YAML configuration.
  • Record the SCP:SL version, EXILED build, plugin versions, and installation date.
  • Review plugins after every game or EXILED update instead of assuming compatibility.
  • Limit permissions and protect webhook or database credentials.
  • Install and test one plugin at a time.
  • Use reload plugins only with documented, tested dynamic-update support.
  • Maintain a maintenance window and a tested rollback procedure.

EXILED gives server owners a flexible way to extend SCP: Secret Laboratory, but the framework is only the foundation. The dependable approach is to select plugins by server goal, enforce compatibility and permission gates, test their interactions, and keep a restart-based recovery path whenever dynamic behavior is uncertain.
